"So by that definition, all stories are useful. The question is: to what end?" Jay Perry Jay Perry and I explored what happens when we begin to see story not as decoration or distraction, but as data - the language we use to survive, connect and create. Jay shared his definition that “a story is language put to use” and reminded us that “all stories are useful” - the real question being to what end? Together we examined how some stories serve connection, while others become what Jay calls “story infections” - narratives shaped by fear, judgement or diminishment. We talked about the stories that get “archived,” the ones that still run in the background long after we've outgrown them and what it means to interrupt or catch those stories before they shape our choices. Jay also introduced Storysphere, his community platform for engaging with stories consciously and creatively. Jay Perry, (aka Wonder Man), has spent the last 45+ years creating communities to explore how to make the most of our human experience. This week, two evocative stories exploring the notion of divinity through history and poetry. These stories were commissioned by guest editors Hasib Hourani and Adalya Nash for Issue 04: Illuminated Manuscript of Debris Magazine. The Crystal World by Bella LiThere was, on the island of St John, a commonly sighted mirage, appearing to those afflicted by an excess of light: a sea of glass like unto crystal. In our first story, an enchanting, meditative venture into the realm of lost knowledge, ancient civilizations, and the luminous mysteries of gemstones. From the emerald mines of Cleopatra to Galileo’s forbidden observations, truth is preserved, distorted, and rediscovered - on repeat. Like light through stained glass, knowledge bends, fractures, and reemerges in unexpected colours. Bella Li’s ‘The Crystal World,’ was also selected as part of Unesco's Reading the City of Literature, a snapshot of Melbourne's literary activity over the span of a year. But those aren't my real titles. The gifts I have don't work on a business card, can't be put into an algorithm, can't be seen with a machine mind looking deeply into my online history. Who I really am is who I am when I am when I am with you. Whether that is over a cuppa virtual or in person tea with the Muse. Or most especially when I am leading ceremony and I can feel you through the black hole of the camera. My real gifts are feelings. Feeling deeply. I don't care if you know that, or if the machine knows that. You can't use it against me and I know you wouldn't even try. I am a Lover. The universe is my Lover. Like Michael Jackson says, I'm a lover, not a fighter. The kinds of gifts we carry cannot be taken from us by wit or force or password or pressure. Your truest gifts are natural and innate - they are all innately tucked into who you are. You don't have to grow them, earn them or be certified in these gifts. You are the gifts being given through you. The pace of life, and the never-ending intensity can keep us from living them. But that doesn't mean they aren't within you. We are worried about a lot of things right now. I know. I feel it. I see it. I am tracking the many narratives on all sides of the shadow dance of now. There is a grand confluence occuring and it hurts. By grand I don't mean great, I mean BIG. Most days it feels like an unnatural disaster that could have been avoided. But the way we are, the harm we allow and promote, has been going on for so long. No way out but through, you know?But now that I have offerd a poem and a reflection if you have made it THIS far - I want to ask you the MOST SIGNIFICANT question or our life time. Your lifetime. Any recent timeline.But first...the reality is we have been in various stages of oppressive culture for close to 8,000 years - archeologically speaking. So that means we spend A LOT, get that? A LOT of precious life force working on resistance and insistence. Resisting power structures, resisting false narratives, insisting on justice, insisting on human rights. The energy it takes to resist and insist can keep us caught in the worrisome battle of a disgruntled activists. Present company included. Just for now...for right this minute in the naked now, I want to ask you a question. Don't skip ahead please. Pause and breathe. There.....close your eyes....open them...read the question and without thinking....answer without editing....If you weren't in the resistanceHow would you lead your life? Really - if you didn't have to confront reality - how would you use your precious days?Liberate your thoughts through falling in love with your gifts, when they are in service to beauty as WELL as in service to the modern revolutionary conundrums. I have been living my answer to that question for over 30 years. I Trust that question and the community that has risen up around my answering that question. That doesn't mean I don't still persist in the resistance. What it means is I spend the majority of my life force centering on the joy of my heart, not the pain. I have rescued my energy from the grid of oppression. Which then works towards liberating my community as well. so here's the thing. I'm not saying to step out of the resistance in any way -, what I am saying is to make sure you spend time caring for your own gifts. Anthony Constantino grew up in Amsterdam, New York, at a time when the city was bustling with activity. In the years that followed, however, many of the manufacturing jobs disappeared, leaving its factories empty and its residents without work. Rather than flee upstate New York, Constantino instead co-founded Sticker Mule in 2010. The company makes products ranging from magnets and stickers (hence the name) to buttons and T-shirts. Today, it employs about 1,000 people in the Amsterdam area. And until recently, Sticker Mule was known for its products—not its politics. That changed on the day former President Donald Trump survived an assassin's bullet. Fed up with the hatred toward Trump, Constantino posted on Sticker Mule's X account an appeal to “help end the hate.” In that post on the night of July 13, he also declared his support for Trump. "I've been seeing the hate directed at President Trump and his supporters for the last eight years. And I don't like it,” Constantino told The Daily Signal in an interview Friday. “When a bullet hit President Trump, I spoke up, and I've been doing everything I can to try to stop the hate.” Since that fateful night in July, Constantino hasn't slowed down. This week, he unveiled a massive 100-foot-wide sign atop his Amsterdam factory along the Mohawk River. He spoke with The Daily Signal about the sign—and the controversy that ensued—for a special episode of our podcast. Illuminated in white and red letters, the “Vote for Trump” sign nearly landed Constantino in jail for allegedly violating zoning rules and distracting drivers. “As soon as the local Democrat mayor heard about the excitement and the enthusiasm for the sign, he got a restraining order issued against me, blocking me from displaying the sign under threat of jail time,” Constantino explained. “My lawyer said, Anthony, if you show that sign, you're going to end up in jail. I thought they were joking; they were serious.” A judge's last-minute order spared him. Monday's celebration proceeded as planned with thousands of onlookers. Constantino's new political action committee—Sticker PAC—produced a video casting the controversy as a “fight for free speech.” Even if Constantino's advocacy for Trump displeases some of Sticker Mule's customers, the CEO isn't planning to stay silent when it comes to politics. “I'm very proud of my organization for the way they've handled all this and they've endured all this. They stayed focused on doing exciting things for our customers, exciting things for the business,” he said. “Everyone stuck by my side. We haven't lost a single employee." Constantino told The Daily Signal that he remains motivated to stop the political division in America and bring the country together. He believes Trump is the leader who can do it.
