The history of medieval Britain through twelve remarkable illuminated manuscripts. Illumino: A History of Medieval Britain in Twelve Illuminated Manuscripts (Reaktion, 2025) explores the history of medieval Britain through the biographies of twelve remarkable illuminated manuscripts and of their creators and owners. The manuscripts each serve as portals into these lives and as springboards into the era of their production. For illuminated manuscripts are among the most intricate and fascinating forms of evidence for the Middle Ages, blending the fruits of human intellect – the arts, the sciences, politics, philosophy and faith – with the materiality of their production. By undertaking the detective work needed to determine the nature of each project and the underlying human-interest stories, this book reveals their manifold social, economic and cultural contexts and charts the exchange of ideas, techniques and materials over time and space. Featuring more than a hundred beautiful illustrations, this is a unique and accessible introduction to Britain's history, art history and book history across a thousand years. Michelle P. Brown is Professor Emerita of Medieval Manuscript Studies at the School of Advanced Study, University of London, and was formerly Curator of Illuminated Manuscripts at the British Library. Her books include Bede and the Theory of Everything (Reaktion, 2023). Morteza Hajizadeh is a Ph.D. graduate in English from the University of Auckland in New Zealand. In this episode we're delighted to be joined by Maurice J.Casey, a research fellow at Queens University Belfast and author of Hotel Lux: An Intimate History of Communism's Forgotten Radicals, which was published by Footnote in 2025. Hotel Lux is a fascinating, moving account of the lives of women and men who travelled to Moscow in the 1920s to work for the Comintern. We really enjoyed both reading and talking through the book with Maurice, exploring how the book came about, and ideas of friendship, tragedy, hope and memory. In March 2026 Maurice produced a documentary for the BBC about The Alpenpost, an incredible source that he discovered during his research for the book. Ep #352 - Illuminated Truth - An Interview with Jennifer Ruth Russell, Founder and Director of Angels of Ascension Academy I'm excited and honored to welcome back a dear friend and returning guest to Empowering Chats, Jennifer Ruth Russell. Jennifer is the founder of Angels of Ascension Academy and host of the Morning Light Meditations. She's a spiritual mentor, as well as a singer-songwriter whose music is both thought-provoking and heart-opening. Her meditations are powerful, beautiful, and deeply moving. In this conversation, we talk about her latest book, Create Abundance with Mother Mary, along with other inspiring insights and reflections. Why Mother Mary? Jennifer shares that she has felt called by Mother Mary for years, and today she embraces her role as an oracle and scribe for her. Here is what she said, "I feel a deep connection as well—like we come from the same soul family. To me, Mother Mary is the mother of us all." Jennifer reminds us that everyone has a purpose, and that we are always supported by the Divine. We also talk about the new world we are stepping into. This is a time to allow ourselves to acclimate—to release what no longer serves us and to move through a process of cleansing. In doing so, we open the door to creating abundance in every area of our lives. Jennifer shares a beautiful practice of blessing our money using the Violet Flame—inviting it to cleanse and purify not only the physical money we hold (in our wallets, banks, or investments), but also the energy connected to it, including the companies it flows through. Calling in the Violet Flame can help us release what no longer serves us while blessing the abundance we already have. She also encourages us to consciously bless the money that passes through our hands—whether we're paying for essentials or offering gifts to ourselves or others. When we do this from a place of love and purity, that energy continues to circulate. As the money moves from hand to hand, may it stay blessed, and may that intention ripple outward. Jennifer is truly a gift. I'm so grateful for the way she continues to see beyond, hold the light, and remind us that each of us has unique gifts to share with the world. acostumbrados a observar detalles, captaban cada curva, cada sombra.En: Her eyes, accustomed to observing details, captured every curve, every shadow. En: Inés, with her slow pace, caught up with them gradually. En: It was the first time the three met in person. En: They were united by one mission: to discover their family history. En: He knew that their roots were intertwined and that Sevilla was the place where everything began. En: Camila, coming from Argentina, shared this excitement and offered her skill to illustrate what they found.Es: Pero el mayor reto era Inés.En: But the biggest challenge was Inés. En: She held a secret, something that could change everything Mateo had uncovered. En: The day passed by with family stories and anecdotes. En: Mateo, enthusiastically, pulled out his family tree. En: He spread it out over a pew in the cathedral, hoping that Inés would complete it.Es: Pero ella dudaba, sus manos temblorosas acariciaban el papel como si fuera un tesoro frágil.En: But she hesitated, her trembling hands caressing the paper as if it were a fragile treasure.Es: —Inés, necesitamos saber más —imploró Mateo suavemente—.En: "Inés, we need to know more," Mateo implored softly.Es: Este es nuestro legado.En: "This is our legacy."Es: Camila, notando la tensión, comenzó a dibujar líneas y retratos familiares, llenando los espacios vacíos del árbol.En: Camila, noticing the tension, began drawing lines and family portraits, filling the empty spaces of the tree. En: Her drawings were so vivid it seemed as if the family were there, present, watching them.Es: Inés los miraba en silencio.En: Inés looked on in silence. En: Something in her eyes changed as she contemplated the figures emerging from the paper. En: "There is something I must show you," Inés finally whispered, her words broken yet firm. En: She pulled an ancient manuscript from her bag. En: Its pages, yellowed with time, held the story of their ancestors, a tale of journeys and sacrifices, of love and losses. En: This manuscript was the key Mateo was looking for. En: It contained names, dates, and thrilling stories of those who crossed oceans in search of a new life. En: Reading the manuscript was a magical moment. En: Sitting in the light of the stained glass windows, they were immersed in the past. En: They laughed with the antics of a great-great-grandfather and cried with the farewells of distant ancestors. En: Inés revealed the personal sacrifice she once had to make, a secret she had kept to protect a painful fragment of their history. En: But now, around that makeshift table, her words healed old wounds. En: By the end, Mateo realized that every family member was a crucial piece of the puzzle he was trying to assemble. En: He understood that every line of the tree, every story, wove the complexity of his lineage. En: He embraced Inés and thanked Camila for her art, bringing the tree to life. En: The sun began to set behind the gothic structures of the cathedral, leaving a golden glow over them. En: Mateo knew they had forged an unbreakable bond, one that united them not just on paper but in their hearts. En: Thus, they left the cathedral with more than just a complete family tree; they departed with a reunited family, ready to write new stories together. Jenny had a vision one Friday night — and suddenly, everything clicked. In one instant, a complete transmission dropped in: a vision of how the divine masculine — the light, the Creator — enters the feminine through pussy, rises through the entire energetic system, and creates divine union within. In this raw, unplanned conversation with longtime student and Pussy Centered Living Community member Dunia Angel, Jenny shares this download out loud for the first time. What unfolds is a wide-ranging exploration of feminine spirituality, why patriarchy needed to disconnect women from their bodies, the Kabbalistic framework of light and vessel, and why pussy is the portal — not a metaphor, but a literal design of the feminine body. Topics include: The vision that dropped in and why it felt like an operating system upgrade Kabbalah's framework of light and vessel — and what's missing from the masculine perspective Why the feminine path begins in the lower chakras, not the crown Shame stored in the pussy and how it blocks receiving Patriarchy, power, and why women's bodies had to be controlled The torus of energy and the Divine Union practice Reincarnation, past lives, and why this era of feminine rising matters LOVE THIS PODCAST? In this standout episode of The Ash Said It Show, Audrey, the visionary founder of Illuminated Threads, reveals how she is transforming intimidating data into high-fashion "conversation starters." By bridging the gap between data visualization and textile design, Audrey is creating a new category of visual activism that makes complex social issues feel personal, approachable, and stylish. While traditional spreadsheets and digital charts often feel cold or clinical, Audrey argues that fashion is the ultimate human medium. When a data set—such as mental health statistics or environmental shifts—is translated into a garment, it loses its "dry" nature and gains a heartbeat. This wearable advocacy invites curiosity rather than defensiveness, allowing the wearer to embody a story and the observer to engage with it in a non-threatening, tactile way. The creative journey from spreadsheet to stitching is a meticulous process of "Visual Translation." Audrey identifies datasets with significant community impact and maps them directly onto design elements. For example, stitch frequency may represent a specific growth rate, color gradients may visualize demographic shifts, and geometric patterns might reflect urban development data. This Data Artistry ensures that every piece is first and foremost a high-fashion garment that people want to wear, with the profound truth of the data serving as its structural foundation. Audrey shared how these pieces function as "tools for dialogue" in everyday life, recounting a powerful story of a customer whose outfit led to a spontaneous, ten-minute "classroom moment" about education equity in a grocery store aisle. By turning sidewalks into spaces for social discourse, Illuminated Threads empowers the wearer to be an ambassador for change without the pressure of initiating difficult conversations—the clothing does the "heavy lifting." Every collection is rooted in strategic nonprofit partnerships. These organizations provide the "soul" of the data, while Audrey provides the "body." The aesthetic of the final garment is directly influenced by the partner's mission: fluid, organic shapes for ocean conservation or structured, architectural lines for urban renewal. This ensures that the fashion is a literal, visual representation of the nonprofit's core mission. Finally, Audrey is redefining advocacy for the next generation. As younger audiences move toward experience-driven activism, she is shifting the paradigm of traditional awareness campaigns. By leaning into visual activism and aesthetic "drops," she is teaching Gen Z and Alpha that they can be deeply informed and fashionable simultaneously, making advocacy a lifestyle choice and a core part of personal Web: https://illuminatedthreads.com... Andrea Catherwood talks to the programme's producer Jodie Taylor, and Radio 4 documentary commissioner Hugh Levinson, and hears a remarkable insight into how the programme came to be.Feedback's listeners are pretty clued up when it comes to giving their thoughts to the BBC, but we came across one last week who seemed to know more than most - as it turned out, he did a PhD on charter renewal. Andrea talks to Dr Tom Chivers, academic at Goldsmiths, University of London, about what the BBC can do to reach its audience during a consultation that could result in radical change. And following our discussion of news avoidance on last week's programme, we hear from a listener who has discovered his own method for avoiding news that feels excessive, or irrelevant.Presenter: Andrea Catherwood Producer: Pauline Moore Assistant Producer: Rebecca Guthrie Executive Producer: David PrestA Whistledown Scotland production for BBC Radio 4

As the Illuminated series concludes, Brian and Jon turn to John's final emphasis: confidence. Not the kind that comes from having everything figured out, but the kind that grows from knowing who we really are and what He's really like.John reminds believers that faith in Jesus anchors our identity as children of God—and that identity reshapes how we pray, how we discern truth from deception, and how we respond to the pull of competing loyalties.Rather than living in uncertainty or spiritual insecurity, we're invited to live with quiet confidence in God's work within us. Walking in the light means trusting that the life God has given us with Christ is real and active. And in a world full of substitutes and distractions, John's final encouragement is simple: keep yourselves from idols.

As the Illuminated series draws to a close, Mike and Jon explore how the lens we see through shapes the way we love. It turns out the issue isn't usually effort—it's sight. When we love from our own strength, love easily becomes transactional, conditional, or self-protective. But when we receive God's love first, it reshapes how we love others. Many of us carry hidden lenses: believing life with Jesus should be easy, that we must prove ourselves to be loved, or that God thinks exactly as we do. These distortions actually oppose our transformation. When we do the right things through the wrong lens, the result is less than God's best.Walking in the light means allowing God to correct our vision so we can love from what we've truly received.

As the Illuminated series continues, we turn to one of the clearest markers of walking in the light: love. Specifically, how our love—or lack of it—reveals whether we've truly been illuminated by the truth and passed from death to life.Brian and Jon examine the power of judgments and inner agreements—how repeated judgments quietly shape our hearts and can become strongholds that limit our ability to love well. God invites us to ask Him to expose both obvious and subtle forms of resistance to love, including indifference—when we choose to look away rather than engage.Loving like Jesus requires action rooted in genuine affection, but it also requires receiving God's love for ourselves. Walking in the light means letting love move us—toward others and toward healing within.

This week, John's words invite us to consider what it truly means to live in the light: building our lives in Christ by not just believing in Him, but abiding—remaining and dwelling—in Him. Salvation is not something we earn; it is something that inevitably reshapes how we live from the inside out.So join Lee and Jon as we explore the reality that many of our struggles with sin are not merely behavior problems, but heart and identity issues. When we live from a place of spiritual orphanhood—believing we must provide for ourselves—we grasp for substitutes that promise security or control. Living as sons and daughters, however, means trusting a Father who already loves us and is actively shaping us.Rather than white-knuckling external change, we're invited to grow curious about our hearts, allowing God to heal us from the inside out as we grow into who we truly are.

As we continue the Illuminated series, we address a difficult but necessary theme: deception. John warns that deception rarely looks like obvious falsehood; more often, it closely resembles the truth, borrowing Jesus' language and values while quietly reshaping the story.Join Brian and Jon as we explore how our desire for comfort, control, safety, or certainty can make us vulnerable to subtle distortions of faith—versions of Christianity that promise ease, reward, or power rather than transformation. Following Jesus doesn't rewrite the call to surrender; it deepens it. True faith doesn't simply benefit us—it reshapes us and blesses others. Living in the light means remaining rooted in what Jesus actually said, even when it challenges us to think differently.

In this episode, Brian and Jon reflect on 1 John 2:12–17 and invites us to consider a challenging question: What are we building? John writes to believers who already know God, yet still feel the pull of the short-term — comfort, captivation, and validation that promise satisfaction apart from Him.Using the image of this world as a temporary rental, the conversation contrasts living like renters versus owners. Renting centers on personal comfort and immediacy; ownership is marked by stewardship, cultivation, growth, and legacy. John isn't calling us to reject delight or disengage from the world, but to reorder our priorities around God's long-term purposes. The invitation is clear: live with intention, invest wisely, and participate in God's Kingdom coming on earth as it is in heaven.

How can we know if we're truly “walking in the light” as 1 John describes? In the third week of the Illuminated series, Lee and Jon invite us to examine how we know God, how we obey God, and—most importantly—how we learn to love like God while being loved by Him.John's invitation to love like God calls us to confront the places where hatred has quietly taken root: resentment born from past wounds, judgment shaped by assumptions, and rivalry fueled by comparison. Left unaddressed, these patterns keep us from fully experiencing God's love and reflecting it to others. The way forward isn't striving harder but encountering Jesus as He truly is—and allowing those encounters to bring genuine, lasting transformation.

In this episode of Faith Forward, Brian & Jon explore John's invitation to walk honestly in the light of Jesus rather than hiding behind closed doors. Drawing from 1 John 1:5–2:2, the conversation reframes sin not simply as bad behavior, but as separation — moments where we quietly close parts of our lives off from God's presence and care.Using the image of a house with locked rooms, we're invited to consider not just where we're closing doors to God, but why. Often the visible struggle isn't the root; beneath it are deeper needs for comfort, security, or belonging. Confession, then, becomes more than admitting what's wrong — it's naming what we truly need from God and allowing Him to meet us there. The invitation is simple and freeing: step into the light and walk with Jesus, together.

Historian Amanda Wunder joins us to discuss her new exhibition Spanish Style: Fashion Illuminated, 1550-1770, on view at The Hispanic Society Museum & Library until March 22nd, 2026. In addition to royal portraits, life-size sculptures, and sumptuous textiles and jewelry, the exhibition centers around sixteen rarely seen illuminated manuscripts known as cartas ejecutorias or “letters of nobility. Collectively, these objects reveal how upwardly mobile men and women used fashion as a reflection of status, identity, and power in sixteenth and seventeenth century Spain. On today's pages, Zevachim 82 and 83, the rabbis teach that an offering placed on the altar cannot be lowered or diminished—it has crossed a threshold from which it can only rise. Our guest, Jessica Kasmer-Jacobs, helps us see how that same idea animates Hanukkah: once the menorah was kindled, its light became part of an unbroken chain that still burns in our homes today. Her new children's book, The Light That Lasted, available from Doorway Books at doorwaybooks.shop, places each child directly inside that ancient moment, revealing that they, too, sustain the miracle. How does understanding ourselves as part of a story that can only ascend change the way we celebrate? Listen and find out. To support Tablet and make a tax deductible donation, click here.

What can you say on the radio these days? For some listeners, instances of swear words and racialised language do not belong on Radio 4. Andrea Catherwood sits down with "king of the bleep" Roger Mahony, the Head of Editorial Standards for Radio 4, Radio 4 Extra and On Demand Speech, to discuss listeners' concerns and ask how the decision to give certain words the green light gets made. And listeners were entranced by a recent Illuminated documentary presented by poet Paul Farley about hearing loss and hearing aids. We put your points to the documentary's producer Geoff Bird.Presenter: Andrea Catherwood Producer: Pauline Moore Assistant Producer: Rebecca Guthrie Executive Producer: David PrestA Whistledown Scotland production for BBC Radio 4
