On today's pages, Zevachim 82 and 83, the rabbis teach that an offering placed on the altar cannot be lowered or diminished—it has crossed a threshold from which it can only rise. Our guest, Jessica Kasmer-Jacobs, helps us see how that same idea animates Hanukkah: once the menorah was kindled, its light became part of an unbroken chain that still burns in our homes today. Her new children's book, The Light That Lasted, available from Doorway Books at doorwaybooks.shop, places each child directly inside that ancient moment, revealing that they, too, sustain the miracle. How does understanding ourselves as part of a story that can only ascend change the way we celebrate? Listen and find out. To support Tablet and make a tax deductible donation, click here.
What can you say on the radio these days? For some listeners, instances of swear words and racialised language do not belong on Radio 4. Andrea Catherwood sits down with "king of the bleep" Roger Mahony, the Head of Editorial Standards for Radio 4, Radio 4 Extra and On Demand Speech, to discuss listeners' concerns and ask how the decision to give certain words the green light gets made. And listeners were entranced by a recent Illuminated documentary presented by poet Paul Farley about hearing loss and hearing aids. We put your points to the documentary's producer Geoff Bird.Presenter: Andrea Catherwood Producer: Pauline Moore Assistant Producer: Rebecca Guthrie Executive Producer: David PrestA Whistledown Scotland production for BBC Radio 4

But call to remembrance the former days, in which, after ye were illuminated, ye endured a great fight of afflictions; (Hebrews 10:32) *1/ A call to remembrance - "Former days" 2/ When ye were illuminated. 3/ What followed the illumination - "A great fight of afflictions."* **Sermon Summary:** The sermon centers on the call to remember the transformative moment of spiritual illumination—when God's light pierced the darkness of the heart, revealing both the depth of sin and the grace of Christ—drawing believers back to the foundational experience of conversion. Rooted in Hebrews 10:32, it emphasizes that true faith is marked not only by initial revelation but by a lasting effect: a life changed, marked by affliction, separation from worldly ways, and faithful fellowship with God's people. The Holy Spirit, described as the Remembrancer, renews this memory not for guilt but for encouragement, reinforcing assurance and combating spiritual complacency. The passage warns against wilful apostasy while affirming that genuine believers, though tempted, do not despise the blood of the covenant or the Spirit's work, and thus are called to recall their past faithfulness under light given, as a source of strength and renewal.

Mostly naked Halloween parties? Must be Beacon Hills. In 3×16, “Illuminated,” the power's out, but the drama is very much on. Special Agent Douchebag (McCall) drags our heroes in for way too many questions, Stiles finds a mysterious extra key, and Kira is running an evidence-lockup heist for her phone.Across town, Isaac gets attacked by scary shadow monsters, Chris Argent stays frustratingly tight-lipped, and Derek disappears from his loft for “unknown reasons” (citation: Teen Wolf Wiki). But let's be honest: what this episode is really remembered for is the glowing, neon-soaked blacklight party—conveniently relocated to Derek's loft thanks to the magic of plot. While the pack gets hunted by faceless smoke monsters, we're treated to a technicolor fever dream of body paint, flashing lights, and one of the best versions of the Teen Wolf theme song ever (shout-out to The Bloody Beetroots).A rough, cold night for everyone.xoxo,FotRFind us on the Internet: https://linktr.ee/fandomontherocksSupport the pod: Patreon.com/fandomontherocksCreate your own podcast today with Zencastr and share your story. #madewithZencastr
In this episode of the Prayer Podcast, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe explores the Ketores (incense offering), the final and most powerful part of the morning offerings discussed in the context of Parshas Ki Seitzei, read during the month of Elul. He explains that the Ketores, detailed on pages 34–39 of the Wasserman Siddur, is spiritually significant, as the Zohar teaches it nullifies negative forces in the world through its aroma. Rabbi Wolbe emphasizes its potency, noting that it surpasses even the Shema and Amida in some aspects, often recited with a minyan to maximize its impact. He delves into the symbolism of numbers, highlighting that 10 represents holiness (e.g., Ten Commandments, ten verses in Rosh Hashanah prayers), while 11 and 9 signify evil forces. The Ketores uses 11 spices to counter these forces, with specific weights (e.g., 70, 16, 12, 9 mane) to disrupt their sequence and overpower evil, as seen when Aaron used incense to stop Korach's rebellion. Rabbi Wolbe connects the 11 amot depth of Noah's Ark and the 11 verses in V'Yiten Lecha to this protective power. He discusses the inclusion of chelbenah (galbanum), a foul-smelling spice, to symbolize incorporating the less righteous, as their negative traits can be transformed in a positive environment, like a yeshiva, mirroring the Yom Kippur prayer's inclusion of all Jews (Kol Nidre). The Ketores must include all 11 spices, or it incurs severe consequences, underscoring the need for precision in recitation, as if offering it in the Temple.Rabbi Wolbe explains the use of salt as a preservative, dipped three times with challah to chase away evil, and notes the exclusion of honey, despite its transformative power, due to Torah prohibition and cost considerations. He highlights the spiritual ascent of the Ketores's aroma, transforming physical elements into a divine connection, and cites the Shulchan HaKadosh to emphasize feeling the teshuvah of the offerings over mere understanding. Reciting Ketores protects individuals, families, and the Jewish nation. Rabbi Wolbe concludes by connecting the shofar's sound in Elul to sending prayers to God, urging listeners to reflect on their past year and seek teshuvah to clear spiritual obstacles, wishing all a meaningful week._____________This Podcast Series is Generously Underwritten by Dr. Leonard & June GoldbergDownload the Prayer Podcast Worksheets:https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1iBVevW1ydyjSeyeO0iCcina7e8vix3Lt?usp=sharingThis episode (Ep. #36) of the Prayer Podcast by Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe of TORCH is dedicated to my dearest friends, Dr. Leonard & June Goldberg! In this episode of the Prayer Podcast, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe delves into the significance of the Karbon Tamid, the continual offering brought twice daily in the Temple, as outlined in Numbers 28:1-8. He explains that this offering, purchased with communal half-shekel contributions, was a consistent act of devotion, symbolizing the Jewish people's commitment to fulfilling Hashem's will, likened to a child pleasing a parent. The prayer recited today, which includes Torah verses, Mishnah, and Talmud, serves as a substitute for the physical offering, fulfilling daily Torah study obligations and elevating good deeds to a heavenly account. Rabbi Wolbe highlights the spiritual danger of routine, where consistency can lead to numbness, diminishing appreciation for life's miracles, such as technology or the human body. The Tamid offering counters this by infusing daily actions with divine purpose, ensuring spiritual vitality.Rabbi Wolbe further explores the Kabbalistic dimensions of the Tamid offering, noting its connection to the “Olah” (elevation offering), which counters impurity, represented by the worm-like tendency to consume destructively. The offering's slaughter on the north side of the altar, associated with judgment and the binding of Isaac, reflects the triumph of kindness over harshness, as seen in the ritual of washing the right hand (kindness) before the left (judgment). He emphasizes the need for intentionality in daily routines—eating, working, or sleeping—to serve Hashem, transforming the mundane into the sacred. By reciting this prayer before morning and afternoon services, and beginning evening prayers with a plea for mercy due to the absence of a nightly offering, Jews maintain a continual connection to Hashem. Rabbi Wolbe concludes with a call to infuse daily life with purpose, praying for the Third Temple's rebuilding to restore the Tamid offering._____________This Podcast Series is Generously Underwritten by Dr. Leonard & June GoldbergDownload the Prayer Podcast Worksheets:https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1iBVevW1ydyjSeyeO0iCcina7e8vix3Lt?usp=sharingThis episode (Ep. #35) of the Prayer Podcast by Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe of TORCH is dedicated to my dearest friends, Dr. Leonard & June Goldberg! "So by that definition, all stories are useful. The question is: to what end?" Jay Perry Jay Perry and I explored what happens when we begin to see story not as decoration or distraction, but as data - the language we use to survive, connect and create. Jay shared his definition that “a story is language put to use” and reminded us that “all stories are useful” - the real question being to what end? Together we examined how some stories serve connection, while others become what Jay calls “story infections” - narratives shaped by fear, judgement or diminishment. We talked about the stories that get “archived,” the ones that still run in the background long after we've outgrown them and what it means to interrupt or catch those stories before they shape our choices. Jay also introduced Storysphere, his community platform for engaging with stories consciously and creatively. Jay Perry, (aka Wonder Man), has spent the last 45+ years creating communities to explore how to make the most of our human experience. In addition to Storycatchers he has created The Actors' Information Project, The Coaching Collective, The Listening Games, and Wonder-shops. How do ancient rituals transform into modern spiritual practices? Join us, as we embark on a journey through the profound world of Karbanot, or prayer offerings, and their deep-rooted significance in both history and contemporary life. This episode takes you back to the times of biblical figures like Cain, Abel, and Abraham, unearthing the spiritual essence of sacrifices that have evolved into today's prayer rituals. We explore how these symbolic acts help elevate our moral understanding, much like charity in prayer, and stress the importance of incorporating Torah study into our daily routines.Handwashing—a simple act with profound implications—is more than a ritual; it's a gateway to humility and recognizing divine grace. We unravel the historical and spiritual significance of washing hands before prayer and meals, particularly bread, illustrating how this act cleanses arrogance and reinforces our human limitations without divine assistance. Even without the physical presence of the Temple, the power of daily prayers stands unfaltering, offering us a chance to make amends for past transgressions. Through our discussions, we nurture hope for the eventual rebuilding of the Temple and the arrival of Mashiach, inviting you to strengthen your connection with the divine in anticipation of a blessed day._____________This Podcast Series is Generously Underwritten by Dr. Leonard & June GoldbergDownload the Prayer Podcast Worksheets:https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1iBVevW1ydyjSeyeO0iCcina7e8vix3Lt?usp=sharingThis episode (Ep. #33) of the Prayer Podcast by Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe of TORCH is dedicated to my dearest friends, Dr. Leonard & June Goldberg! We share stories of faith, from the plagues of Egypt to modern-day struggles, inspiring a closer connection with Hashem and a deeper appreciation of His power and kindness, as we anticipate the ultimate redemption with the coming of Mashiach._____________This Podcast Series is Generously Underwritten by Dr. Leonard & June GoldbergDownload the Prayer Podcast Worksheets:https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1iBVevW1ydyjSeyeO0iCcina7e8vix3Lt?usp=sharingThis episode (Ep. #32) of the Prayer Podcast by Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe of TORCH is dedicated to my dearest friends, Dr. Leonard & June Goldberg! This week's episode is an archival interview by J. Brown, originally aired on the Yoga Talks Podcast in 2016. In this conversation, we explore the art and science of translating Sanskrit, the influence of Tantra on modern yoga, the legacy of Abhinavagupta, and the subtle difference between speaking about nonduality and directly experiencing it. The episode touches on key themes such as the integration of awakening, the balance between intellectual understanding and embodied realization, and the importance of cultural context in spiritual transmission. We also reflect on how removing conceptual overlay and integrating transcendence reveals the inherent wonder and awe in life.Discover a treasure trove of guided meditations, teachings, and courses at tantrailluminated.org. In this episode of the Customers First Podcast, I chat with DJ Soults, the first certified Unreasonable Hospitality Coach. DJ reveals how businesses can elevate customer experiences by going above and beyond expectations. He shares his transformative approach that helps organizations turn ordinary customer interactions into extraordinary ones. Our conversation dives into practical strategies for both attracting new customers and delighting existing ones—a crucial element often overlooked. DJ reflects on his decade-long journey with Illuminated, a digital agency focused on creating meaningful client connections. He emphasizes that nurturing existing relationships can yield greater returns than always chasing new leads. Central to our dialogue is the concept of Unreasonable Hospitality, popularized by Will Gadara. DJ distinguishes between service (the transactional aspect) and hospitality (the relational approach), highlighting how personalization can make clients feel truly valued. He illustrates his points with compelling stories, including insights from the renowned Eleven Madison Park restaurant on enhancing customer interactions. We tackle common misconceptions about customer journey mapping and DJ provides practical advice for businesses to identify areas for improvement without breaking the bank. His empowering message underscores that a proactive mindset can lead to significant enhancements in customer satisfaction. This episode is packed with actionable takeaways, inspiring business owners to create exceptional customer experiences that drive loyalty and growth. Aaron and I have a grand old time this episode and once again, I have another super intriguing human being to introduce you to! Aaron began life unschooled-you could say he was the ultimate free-range kid...but once his parents decided to send him to a regular school, everything changed. Suddenly Aaron found himself in an environment that wasn't really friendly to those who are different. And let's be honest, school is hard enough without the bullies to deal with...but Aaron found his way and became a biologist. And then? Well, that was just the beginning...because Aaron's path was ready to unfold for him! And over time, Aaron has discovered more about just who he is, his potential and what sorts of plans the ancestors and universe have for him. It's an interesting tale, told by a master storyteller! In "Salty & Illuminated," Pastor Rob McCoy explores the Sermon on the Mount from Matthew, focusing on Jesus's metaphor of His followers as salt and light. He emphasizes that Jesus declares we already are these elements, not that we will become them. We are meant to be the moral preservative in society, challenging us: if we don't stand for righteousness, who will? As the light of the world, if we don't shine in dark places, who will? Pastor McCoy calls for believers to maintain their saltiness and let their light shine, serving as Christ's ambassadors by submitting to God's purpose, thereby exemplifying His transformative power through our lives.Verse References: Matthew 5 verses 13-16Make sure you subscribe to this channel and follow us on all our platforms to always stay up to date with our latest content! And you can always head over to our website for any general information!https://godspeak.comPrayer/NeedsIf you have any needs, or have a willingness to be used to meet various need in the body, please email info@godspeak.com.
