This is a must-listen if you are considering looking for a coach or getting into any kind of commodified spirituality group. MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE:Hayla Wong on IG

We talk about her new book, Everything Harder than Everyone Else: Why Some of Us Push Ourselves to Extremes," and how extreme fitness culture relates to other extreme behaviors, like addiction, pornography and other gonzo-style pursuits. We discuss the space between having a healthy balance and being unafraid to thrust your whole mind and body into achieving something. We also discuss the ways we, the public, react to those achievements. Addiction, restlessness, pride, exhilaration... it's our wild human nature and it can be traumatic if we lie to ourselves about it or healing if we approach it with honesty. But what can lie underneath all those good vibes and incense smoke? Turns out, some serious grifting, especially when people's livelihoods are on the line. WITH GUEST: Jake Hutchinson, American Avalanche InstituteWHAT'S THE WHAT: On this episode, I talk to Jake Hutchinson, Marine Corps Veteran, Lead Avalanche Guide, K9 Trainer (and Steel Fabricator!) about the dangers of cult-like gyms on people with CPTSD. We have a mental health crisis in America. To top that off, we have a growing number of veterans and first responders who have been trained to push through their emotions at the expense of their well-being. When these folks find gyms that promise therapy, healing, or exorcizing demons through sweat, things can spiral out of control. These gyms are not an appropriate substitute for therapy. Exercise is maintenance, not a cure. And the folks that run these gyms and wellness centers are often self-serving predators who are not qualified to deal with complex psychological injuries. Most people think taking that next step to pro status will facilitate success and happiness, but will it? We have a super candid talk about what the difference between amateur and professional is, what most people get wrong about training, and how performance enhancing drugs fit into the whole picture. I got to sit down and talk to Torrie O'neil, founder of THE MIGHTY DAMES, about what it is like being a larger-bodied Jiu-Jitsu player and why representation matters. It quickly turned into a full examination of America and a call to do better as her citizens. At the intersection of race, gender, class, and sexuality lies the answers to creating a more just and equitable society. This, in turn, will help us all show up completely for ourselves and for everyone else. It's Ameri-CAN, not Ameri-CAN'T, motherfuckers. Let's GOOOOOO. Torrie O'Neil on InstagramThe Mighty Dames
On this episode, I catch up with Michael Andor Brodeur, in the middle of writing his book, SWOLE: THE MAKING OF MEN AND THE MEANING OF MUSCLE (Beacon Press 2022). We talk about men, specifically, and how the male body archetype reflects the values of the era he walks in.We unravel the social threads that determine what you want your body to look like and how it is read by others. We've got 80s beefcakes versus tactical beefcakes, performance wear, the joy of "manly training" and Hercules in repose. What is the deal with masculinity? What are the rules of manhood no one talks about? We also talk about the strange way people react to sexual assault and how her organization is educating communities on how to treat survivors and prevent abuse. Why do we need many modalities of therapy to treat trauma? Why don't people believe victims? What do we mean when we say everything is political? Listen and find out. After our last podcast, Miyo and I had a few guys reach out to discuss feminism and "toxic masculinity." So we opened it up and tackled the issues that seemed to be on some peoples' minds. THIS PODCAST IS NOT FOR WOKE FOLKS. This is a shallow wade through the definitions of feminism, rape culture, toxic masculinity, sex and gender. This podcast is for people who are irritated and confused by these terms but open to listening to open-minded perspectives. The whole point is to start having these discussions instead of allowing media and influencers dictate our emotions. Miyo Strong is a world champion brown belt out of Unified Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Utah. She holds multiple medals across multiple belts and brackets, plus has had some fantastic wins in submission only superfights. Miyo is a BJJ athlete, a Gym Jones certified instructor and heads the Smart Defense Program at the Elizabeth Smart Foundation. Her goal is to give women the education and tools to empower themselves in a world where rape culture and sexual assault statistics go hand in hand. I was lucky to catch her in between training and driving her daughters to football practice. We have a great chat about self defense, what the Smart Defense program is all about, sexuality, setting boundaries. and the insidious ways our culture devalues women and becomes a permissive environment for sexual abuse and assault. We also get to the bottom of the health crises that not only underlie obesity, but cause nearly all of our collective health problems. Karen Preene IG
I received a DM on International Women's Day asking why women post sexualized pictures on a day that is supposed to be about respecting women. We're not always going to get it right, especially when we confuse empowerment with liberation.
On this episode, I talk to one of my favorite World Champions, Shannon O'Grady, Ph.D. This endurance athlete and murderous human backpack also happens to be the CPO and COO of Gnarly Nutrition. We discuss what athletes and non-athletes nutritional needs are, how restrictive diets can change your gut, and what everybody seems to be getting right and wrong when it comes to food. We also talk about how to evaluate a study, how a supplement goes from concept to product and which one we both absolutely love. Should you eat the cookie? What does it mean to be "fat adapted"? And did she just say LSD training? We answer all of these questions and more. Gnarly NutritionShannon's ArticlesShannon on IG
On this episode, I talk to Nicolle Imig, a sports and nutrition coach. Nicolle is also a dietetic intern. We get in the weeds about diet culture, weight loss, and our toxic relationship with food. Plus, she opens up about her own experience with eating disorders. We also end up answering the great question, "What is the most important thing when it comes to nutrition?" Hint: The answer has nothing to do with protein, carbs, or fat. Check her out on the gram:Nicolle Imig
On this episode, I revisit the midlife crisis I had in my mid to late 30's, and go on a ramble about balance, or something.
Eric "R." Olson is a 20 year veteran of the local newspaper scene in Chicago. He spent 12 years as a reporter and the remainder of his time being an award-winning editor. No longer working in the news media, I got him to sit down and tell it like it is. What is journalism? Why should we know the difference between a report, an editorial, and a column? Is journalistic integrity dead? How can we tell facts from fictions and is it our job to be educated consumers or the media's job to entertain and inform us? How does the news work and what does the future of journalism look like? All this, plus how Eric won the prestigious "Jag Off of the Week" award and how he copes with criticism and the legitimate psychopaths that have stalked him at the newsroom. Heather MacDonald is not your average college English professor. She is an Elite/Pro Highland Games competitor and GRRRL Clothing sponsored athlete (size Heather!) Previous to that, she was an NCAA Division 1 track and field athlete and a strongwoman competitor for two years. We have a great talk about women on the field and in the gym, the animosity coming from armchair sports "fans" and whether or not everyone in the strength and power sports communities can "come together" after this past year of COVID, racial tension and political insanity. We also discuss body image at length because the fitness industry cannot let it go, especially when it comes to women. What does it mean to take up space on the field and in your life? Welcome to my new thing, where I drop sweet pearls of LIZDOM all up in your earholes. Today's episode: Why education is one of the most crucial factors to our collective health and wellness and WASH YOUR HANDS YOU FUCKING SAVAGES. Dang. Want more nuggets? CLICK HERE.
On this episode, I talk to personal trainer and powerlifter Robert Engelman on what it takes to overcome a catastrophic injury and a opiate addiction to become a record holder and USPA referee. From getting smashed by a truck on the side of the road and told he wouldn't be able to lift again, to what it is truly like to be down and out, the positive side to getting angry with yourself, fitness frauds on the internet, and training addicts to replace an unhealthy addiction with a positive one, we cover what it's truly like to be in the hole and get yourself out. Check out Rob's lifts and insane all day breakfasts and his incredibly good-looking coach, "Franz" here: https://www.instagram.com/robs_not_done/
The first episode of 2021 is coming in hot with Jessica Fithen, World's Strongest Woman and creator of the demotivational meme page You Look Like A Man. YLLAM was started as a joke about the astoundingly stupid things men say to women athletes online and in the gym, but it soon grew into an activist page as well, because the floodgates opened and women's experiences with harassment, misogyny and violence came flooding in. Have a listen as we talk about her humble Globo gym beginnings, sexist bias in the fitness industry, and the crazy shit Garys say. We also talk about where the violence is coming from, how to deal with trolling, and the movement towards internet safety for women and girls. I got to talk to my friend Jessica Sunier of FitPower Gym, about what it takes to be an inclusive space for training. Hint: It's not a checklist, and it's not being too "woke" to be able to have real conversations with people. Jessica has been an athlete her whole life and holds a Masters in Exercise Physiology. She is a powerlifter and a brown belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. We talk about how long it took her to carve out a great gym, how she maintains a space for everybody and what it takes to learn and evolve as the roster grows to include diverse genders, religions, and adaptive clients. Its a timely and necessary talk about the future of not just gyms, but health itself, and how we can possibly "come together" after this wild year that split us all open. On this episode, I talk to PhD candidate and 2020 Tillman scholar, Jayme Hentig about traumatic brain injury, the type of support veterans need after the military and finding resiliency through diversity. Jayme was an airborne medic until his vehicle rolled over and he suffered a traumatic brain injury that left him 100% disabled. That didn't stop him - he went back to school and is now one of the tireless scientists across the globe, trying to both understand and treat TBI and other neurodegenerative diseases. Jayme is currently a neuroscientist and biomedical researcher at Notre Dame who spends much of his time placing inappropriate items in his refrigerator and "insulting" zebrafish in a lab. (So if a zebrafish ever pisses you off, you know who you can call.) LINKS: Jayme Hentig (Instagram)The Pat Tillman Foundation
Stephan Kesting is a Canadian firefighter and a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instructor who owns and maintains Grapplearts, one of the most prolific instructional BJJ catalogues out there (link below). When he's not building better grapplers and putting out fires, he is setting off on mountain adventures, building the strongest neck muscles in North America, and tirelessly standing up for science and reason on social media. If the rumors about Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu being a sport for nerds and geeks to excel at violence are true, Stephan would be King of these murderous nerds. On this episode, we discuss pandemic life, conspiracy, cults, and the future of BJJ in a post-COVID world. Check it out: Grapplearts
I had a few glasses of rosé with my friend Ella Fitzmayer, an Occupational Therapist for Canyons School District in Utah. We talk about what, exactly, OT work looks like at the childhood education level and what effects it has for both the children and the community at large. We talk about parenting, politics, and the beauty of diversity in both cognition and ability in society. On this "Very Special Episode" of DAM WELL BETTER, I read through all the answers you guys gave me on the sex survey I posted in my stories a few weeks ago. I want to thank you all so much for your honesty and for sharing such personal parts of yourselves. In return, I answer all the questions as well.Thinking about maybe doing these short, themed pieces once in awhile. Maybe questions on specific topics or timely audio essays.
Last week, I sat down and had a zoom chat with Annie Spence of Unbreakable Strength Co. We talked about makes people mentally and physically strong, the future of boutique training and subversive fitness collectives. What's it like growing up queer in a Midwestern prairie? How are fitness spaces going to be like food courts? What happens when a tree falls on your tent and crushes you in the middle of the night in a remote patch of woods in rural New Zealand? And how the hell does a 24-year-old reference the TV show "Northern Exposure"? All of this, plus some Stargate and Blade Runner speculation for our cybernetic future and a gentle ribbing of those in the industry that liken themselves to wolves and lions. On this episode, I chat with Katie Marie, a certified NLP therapist and hypnotherapist, about de-programming repressed sexuality in women, plus looking inward to become the truest version of yourself. We talk about her split with the LDS church, and her split with her husband, plus the roles we play in life that prevent us from being fulfilled and showing up for one another. We also examine the midlife crisis, the WAP, the brain's incredible ability to build new neural pathways, and how to ride some sweet ass theta brainwaves to rediscover our inner child. Check it out, especially if you feel like your life isn't what you thought it was supposed to be.More info: Katie MarieWhat is NLP?WAP
On this episode, I chat with former movement coach, Bryan Wither, to talk about fitness culture, pseudoscience, the chicanery of the yoga industry, and the possible future of personal training. Bryan is an NASM certified personal trainer, holds a black belt in Judo, a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, is a 200 hour certified Yoga instructor, as well as a Level 2 Animal Flow coach. What made him walk away? What's so dangerous about yoga? Why does he hate Chiropractors so much? Why do I call him an "asshole"? It's all here on Dam. Well. Better.
Epidemiology is a buzzword these days in regards to a viral outbreak... but what about the epidemic of dismal health outcomes in many American communities? Why is the United States one of the richest nations, yet it ranks mediocre to poor in terms of life expectancy and health? I interview Elizabeth Yoder, a Social Epidemiologist from Kansas City, who also holds a master's degree in public health, about the social determinants of health and why we should care about the overall health of all our communities - not just the one we live in. I like this conversation, because it's not another chiding about racism and inequity - it's a hard look at how these things end up affecting everyone and a tangible call to action. If you are interested in how the social determinants of health affect your life, buy my book: The Iron Beaver Guide to HealthAnd if you decide to DM me about your local politicians, find me on Instagram:IronBeaverFitness
On this episode, I sit on the porch of Dr. Elizabeth Nicholson, MD, MPH, to talk about her boots on the ground experience with the coronavirus pandemic, plus her feelings on how to train Jiu-Jitsu safe(ish) until we have a vaccine, contact tracing, and rapid testing in place. We touch on ER life, socioeconomic issues, expertise, safe versus stanky training practices, why Stephan Kesting is the absolute tits, and why we maybe shouldn't toss grandma and grandpa under the bus on this. If COVID safety interests you, or you train Jiu-Jitsu - it's definitely worth the listen.
On this episode, I sit down with four different fitness professionals to talk about the effects of COVID-19 on the fitness industry. We cover all the ways businesses had to pivot to stay afloat, plus all of the new technology available to trainers. We even touch on the dark side of the fitness industry, politics, aliens, and dick pics. Check it out!GUESTS:ART O’CONNOR (WUKAR FIT)Art uses his exercise and sports science degrees, plus 30 years of experience, to bring strength training to endurance athletes. In this episode, we rejoin the conversation on police reform. We're getting a little looser and discussing police training, mental health care, racism and use of force. The goal isn't pig-roasting or libtard-owning. The goal is for a civilian to understand where the officer is coming from and for an officer to understand where the civilian is coming from. And if you stick around until the end, I give out stickers to some of my Instagram followers!Helpful Links:Graham v. In this episode, I sit down with a police officer over a whiskey on the porch to talk about why he joined the force and to discuss Campaign Zero's 10 steps for police reform. On the first episode, Liz and Darin test out the mics and sound equipment while drinking whiskey and answering some questions from Facebook and Instagram. "This is not how it's going to be." I still need music and a catch-phrase. Next episode will be professional, I swear.
