I have been waiting for the right moment to feature this conversation with interior designer Michelle Fahmy, founder of Haus of Meeshie, about bringing bold color and unique style to your home and life. For the past two years, Meeshie has helped bring fresh life to our family's home in Los Angeles, bringing a whole new vibe to our living spaces.Since I've long preached the power of our spaces on this show, I knew Meeshie (with her very bold style) would be the perfect person to talk us through this topic. But this conversation ended up being about way more than just paint and wallpaper. Meeshie's own career trajectory and leaps of faith make this an inspiring message for how to create the colorful life you want.Follow Haus of Meeshie on InstagramFollow @laura.tremaine on IG for peeks of my personal homeCheck out the EXTRA THINGS conversation with Meeshie on Laura Tremaine's Secret StuffEpisodes that pair well with this one:Ep 236: Discovering what was always thereBONUS: 5 Rules To Create A House You LoveFULL SHOW NOTES ARE HERE SUBSCRIBE to 10 Things To Tell You so you never miss an episode!CLICK HERE for episode show notesFOLLOW @10ThingsToTellYou on InstagramFOLLOW @10ThingsToTellYou on FacebookSIGN UP for episode emails, links, and show notesJOIN Laura Tremaine's SECRET SUBSTACKBUY THE BOOK: Share Your Stuff. This episode is for anyone who has gone through a friendship breakup, or who desires finding a best friend as an adult. Every week on this show I encourage you to take the prompts and topics to a best friend in order to have a deeper conversation and better connection. But what if you don't have a best friend? What if you used to have a best friend but now you don't and that pain still lingers? What if you want a best friend, but have no idea how to find that person? In honor of my book The Life Council: 10 Friends Every Woman Needs celebrating its book birthday this week, I wanted to rerun this episode from January 2021 with Heather Adams.
As season 15 continues, we're chatting today about a topic that has been close to my heart lately, and always, really — the power of friendship. We've already spoken about friendship this season, and we will again before the season concludes. I really resonated with Laura Tremaine's 2023 book The Life Council: 10 Friends Every Woman Needs. I think we have a tendency sometimes to put so much emphasis on one friend, but Laura's book puts forth that we have many different types of friends that make up a life — and that each member of the Life Council is important, valuable, and necessary. Like I tell Laura in today's episode, I see the Life Council like a presidential cabinet, all of my friends sitting around a table helping me navigate my way through life. And each of us has our own Life Council. Today Laura and I chat about how we are lonelier than ever, despite being more connected than ever; her five friendship philosophies, including making friendship a to do; the 10 members of the Life Council, including the Daily Duty friend, the Battle Buddy, and the Empty Chair; how we handle friendships when we are in different stages in life; the reality of the pain of a friendship breakup and how to grieve that loss; her best tips to make new friends as an adult and what she thinks about friendship groups; what she wishes more people knew about friendships; and so much more. I would personally like Laura to be my new friend, so let me tell you a little about her — she worked in film and TV production for many years at MTV, VH1, Fox, and Paramount Pictures before becoming a full-time writer. She writes about friendship (obviously), anxiety, motherhood, and marriage, and her posts and her podcast, 10 Things to Tell You, resonate with women looking for ways to connect more deeply with others as they move through life's stages. She's also the author of the 2021 book Share Your Stuff. I'll Go First: 10 Questions to Take Your Friendships to the Next Level, so, despite her reticence to call herself a friendship expert, I certainly see her as one. Sit back, get comfortable, and get ready to chat about friendship with me and the fabulous Laura Tremaine. The Life Council: 10 Friends Every Woman Needs by Laura Tremaine

Living in a city that never sleeps, like Las Vegas, taught me a valuable lesson about the nature of friendships. The hustle and bustle often blurred the lines between acquaintances and true friends. Inspired by insights from Travis Chapel and Marissa Franco, I share how vulnerability and genuine curiosity can help distinguish and deepen these connections. As we navigate the complexities of adult life, it becomes increasingly vital to reflect on our own roles in fostering these relationships and to pursue meaningful connections amidst our busy schedules. In this episode of the Weekly Drop, we explore the art of nurturing deep friendships through intentional actions and vulnerability. Drawing inspiration from Laura Tremaine's "Share Your Stuff, I'll Go First," I recount personal stories about the transformative power of reaching out during difficult times without expecting anything in return. We delve into the essence of consistent communication and its role in transforming acquaintances into true friends, as outlined in "Together: The Healing Power of Human Connection in a Sometimes Lonely World." Learn how embracing vulnerability and openness can lead to stronger bonds and turn conflicts into opportunities for growth.
To wrap up this focus on doing too much and how we run ourselves ragged, I'm looking at our relationships, from family to friends and in our work, with a focus on how we tend to be all things for all people and we do a disservice to ourselves and others. So I'm sharing a show I did with Laura Tremaine. Laura is host of the 10 Things To Tell You podcast and author of Share Your Stuff. I'll Go First. Laura worked in film and television production for many years at MTV, VH1, Fox, and Paramount Pictures before pursuing writing full time. She writes primarily to women about friendship, anxiety, motherhood, and marriage. But her book, The Life Council: 10 Friends Every Woman Needs, got my attention a couple years ago and I refer to it often. She focused on the niche for women but I resonated completely as a guy. In it she profiles different friend styles and the benefit of having friends for specific needs. It hit a chord for me as I had become concerned with our growing cultural isolation and tendency to look at one friend or family member or our spouse to fulfill all our relational needs. And conversely, how others will look to us to fulfill all their relational needs. And we can't. And we shouldn't. And we not only end up doing too much, but fulfilling roles in the relationships in our lives that drain us and aren't even serving those we care about that well. I think you'll get great value from this talk with Laura Tremaine as you address you may be doing too much in your life. This episode is inspired by Snoop Dogg at the Olympics. In the early 2000s, I worked on Snoop's short-lived MTV show Doggy Fizzle Televizzle and when I made a joke about this on social media, my DMs quickly filled with questions and I realized this was a story I hadn't told in awhile. Show notes: https://www.tamihackbarth.com/blog/episode-219 After I attended an author's panel last year I introduced myself to Laura Tremaine. It was a super nerdy moment for me because I love her books and podcasts. I love her storytelling. I am super intrigued by her. Our backgrounds are very different—she grew up in very conservative Oklahoma, and I grew up in the liberal San Francisco Bay Area. But she moved to Los Angeles in her 20s and has talked about how that has impacted her. Because I wanted to learn more about her, I asked her to be a guest on my podcast; she said yes! Then I made it weird. I didn't reach out to schedule for almost a year.
In this special episode (a live event at Zibby's Bookshop in Santa Monica!), writer and podcaster Laura Tremaine chats with Australian author Emma Grey about THE LAST LOVE NOTE, a “gorgeous, charming, funny, heart-rending, longing-filled triumph of a read” (Katherine Center). Emma describes her journey into writing (she fell in love with Anne of Green Gables, of course) and then delves into the intricacies of grief, candidly discussing the loss of her husband and mother and the power of writing as a form of catharsis. The two also touch on themes of love, friendship, and self-discovery.Purchase on Bookshop:The Last Love Note: bit.ly/3sYiAzZThe Life Council: https://bit.ly/3SLmOUDShare, rate, & review the podcast, and follow Zibby on Instagram @zibbyowens! Mindfulness meditation has changed my life. It has helped with my anxiety, productivity, and inner peace. But even though I'd been hearing about the benefits of this practice (and even read several books on it!), it took me years to get started. Mostly this is because I thought meditating had to be formal. I thought it required a certain amount of time or a certain personality type. But this isn't true! Anyone can meditate. You can start as small as one minute at a time. In this episode, mindfulness educator Laurie Cousins walks us through 10 tips for the meditation-curious, those beginning a meditation journey, and anyone in need of a refresher for what a meditation practice can bring. Laurie Cousins is our guest today and she leads the meditation group that finally got me to make this practice a regular part of my life. Laurie has trained at UCLA and USD and specializes in trauma and resiliency. She is also passionate about mindful parenting, and facilities several groups with this focus. Do you find goals motivational or defeating? Does all the hubbub around the first of the year feel fresh or frustrating? In this conversation with professional goal coach Abbie Schiller, we unpack all the reasons that setting goals makes us groan, and why it doesn't have to be that way. Instead we can look at goals as a framework that moves us forward to create better lives. Abbie and I also discuss what happens when you don't meet your goals, how to identify the obstacles that get in our way, and how to get unstuck when your “new year new self” aspirations meet the reality of carpool and errands. TWO HUNDRED EPISODES! It's a milestone worth celebrating. We're going back to the roots of the show and asking ourselves, What is the ONE thing you would tell? Not 10 Things. Not 3 things. I share the ONE thing that I want impart to others, and I'm joined by more than a dozen past guests of 10 Things To Tell You sharing their ONE thing. Thanks for being here. It's one of my favorite conversations of the year! I love books. I love lists. I love the end of the year. So naturally I LOVE the annual Best Books of the Year conversation with my real life book club friends Yasmin Dunn and Stephanie Newman-Smith. We're back together for our SIXTH annual Best Books of the Year conversation. This one felt a little different from year's past because in 2023 we chose to do a mid-year episode called Best Books of the Year (So Far). In Episode 179 from back in June, we talked about many of the big, buzzy books that released in the first half of the year, which let us share other favorites in this year-end conversation. It's my favorite time of year! Not because of the holiday season, but because I love getting reflective, looking back over the last twelve months and looking ahead to changing of the calendar. The 10 questions in this episode are meant to bring introspection (if you work through them alone) and connection (if you bring them up in conversation). Bring these to your journal, to your travel companions, to the holiday table, or just let them flow through your mind in these last few weeks of the year as we wind down 2023 and gear up for 2024. This episode is for anyone who loves a teenager. I'm the mom of a teenager and a preteen, and cultural norms and expectations have definitely shifted from my own childhood in the 80s & 90s. Sometimes I feel like I'm learning modern manners alongside my kids instead of teaching them from a place of authority. My guest Brooke Romney believes that the only thing harder than parenting a modern teen is being a modern teen. In this episode, Brooke and I talk about a few of the rules that stuck out to me from her guide 52 Modern Manners for Today's Teens. This was a conversation I didn't even know I needed to have, and I loved it. A few times a year, I like to let you listen in on the conversations we're having in the Secret Stuff patreon community. Each month we meet twice over zoom to talk about something culturally relevant (we call this Symposium) or to talk about books (a pretty traditional Book Club). This Secret Stuff meeting was a bit of a mashup of the two. When it was announced that icon and legend Britney Spears was releasing a memoir this fall, I knew it would make a splash in the publishing industry and in the celebrity world. And it did. The Woman In Me sold over a million copies in it's first week of release and there were a few bombshell's from the singer's life, most notably about her relationship with Justin Timberlake. But what is just as fascinating about the content of the book is the way she chose to tell it, and that she was able to tell it at all. After 13 years in a conservatorship held by father, where everything she did was tracked and controlled, Britney is finally free to share her side of the story. As usual, the Secret Stuff community had smart, thoughtful, and compassionate takes on the memoir itself and on Britney's place in music history and our pop culture lexicon. To join in on our next Symposium meeting, JOIN SECRET STUFF NOW You can always check out a FREE TRIAL OF SECRET STUFF to see if it's for you. I love memoirs. I love hearing other people's stories in their own words. And, of course, I champion the idea to Share Your Stuff. But what if the story you need to tell is really difficult? What if it's hard to do justice to the truth while also protecting (or not protecting) other people? My guest for this conversation is author Carmen Rita Wong and she is sharing her own 4 rules to doing this well. Carmen Rita Wong's memoir is called Why Didn't You Tell Me? and is a book about secrets and identity. This episode is for anyone who has asked themselves why they're so invested in what is clearly outrageous, manipulative, and phony "reality" television shows. I watch Real Housewives every weekday on my lunch break, and as I've gone through phases of watching with both fascination and disgust, I've asked myself: why do smart people love dumb tv? What is it that we're drawn to? Why do we get so sucked into the drama? Is it aspirational or escapism or something darker or is it just not that deep? And so I decided to explore that topic with the perfect guest: Matt Marr, cohost of the Reality Gays podcast. In this episode, Matt and I talk about our history of reality tv watching (starting with the Real World in the 90s), and we talk about how we think reality TV has changed culture, why we're so invested in the lives of these reality TV personas, and so much more. We talked for over an hour and didn't even scratch the surface of all that we could have discussed. FULL SHOW NOTES HERE We do have an extended cut version of this episode over on the Secret Stuff patreon page, where Matt and I talk about our shared Oklahoma roots and I'll also be releasing a personal episode over there this week about my time working in reality television in the early 2000s. 10 Things To Tell You exists because Meg Tietz put a microphone in my hand nearly a decade ago when she launched the Sorta Awesome podcast and asked me to be a regular cohost. That invitation changed my life, along with the thousands of Sorta Awesome listeners who have been touched by Meg's words and wisdom for all these years. Meg Tietz has long been a pioneer in the online space. She was one of the earliest mommy bloggers to build a large audience and one of the earliest independent podcasters in the girlfriend chat genre. I am lucky enough to have been friends with her since our childhood years in Oklahoma and have watched the way that she has shaped an entire corner of the internet. Meg recently announced that she is bring the Sorta Awesome podcast to a close, and in our conversation here we reminisce about her online journey and talk about what it means to decide to end something that is going well, simply because you know it's time. Where a 40-something aunt (me) chats with her 20-something niece (Alex) about what we're reading, where we get our book recommendations, and how the algorithm affects both of these things. I often find my 24-year-old niece reading on the couch in our shared home. Sometimes she's pulled something off my bookshelves, but more often she's in her own world of reading, influenced by her age, tastes, and, of course, TikTok. In this episode, Alex and I talk about the differences in what her generation is reading (and why) and mine. Then we share the best books we've both read lately. I loved talking with her officially on microphone because it reminded me that there is always so much to learn from other generations. (And because I always love to talk about reading.) This episode is for anyone who struggles with outside influences they can't shake. I thought when I turned 40 that I had turned a corner in my personal developement, that the shift into caring less about other people's opinions would also mean that my inner critic would pipe down. But here I am, a few years down the road, and the voices from my past live rent-free in my head and their chatter can affect my confidence and my choices. In this episode, I'm talking about the five types of voices that rattle around in our heads and how we can identify them and turn down their volume. This episode is for anyone who cares about tv and movies. I have 10 things to tell you about the historic Hollywood strikes of 2023. The Writers Guild of America and the Screen Actors Guild have been fighting for wage increases, protection against artificial intelligence, and more. Think it doesn't affect you? Think again! Here are the 10 Things I talk through in this episode: What are the basics of the strike? What is the history here? What exactly do Hollywood writers do? How do they get paid? So why are they striking? (And what does striking mean? Can they not work at all?) What does mandatory staffing mean? What is the AI threat? Some notable things that happened during this strike. What was finally negotiated? How does this all affect the viewer? I want this show to be about connection, conversation, and sharing our stuff. The Hollywood strikes are something our family cares about, so I'm sharing it here with you. If this episode teaches you something, please share it on social media or with a friend. This episode is for moms who are drowning in this season. After years of rarely talking about parenthood on this show, this topic suddenly continues to find me. I'm not sure if this because of my kids' ages (11 & 13) or just the season I'm in, but motherhood is something I want to talk about more now than I did when the kids were young. My guest today is Dr. Morgan Cutlip, a highly sought after relationship expert, who has helped hundreds of thousands of people worldwide learn how to form and maintain healthy relationships. Dr. Morgan has been a featured relationship expert with Good Morning America, Teen Vogue, and The New York Times. Her new book, Love Your Kids Without Losing Yourself, is out now. Dr. Morgan and I talk about motherhood as an identity and the mental load of parenting that so often falls more heavily on women. We also discuss how that affects our mood, our partnerships and sex drive. I even share a real life example of this dynamic happening in my home right now. If you've been carrying the mental load in your family, I hope this conversation resonates with you and that you'll know you're not alone. LEARN MORE ABOUT DR. MORGAN CUTLIP HERE FOLLOW DR. The episode is for anyone looking for an insider perspective on the rise of book bans in America. My life's greatest passion is reading. Books are my lifeblood. And so you will not be surprised that I have been greatly alarmed by the rise of book bans in America in the last few years. The idea of banning books is so archaic to me, so outdated, so harmful, it's as if we have learned NOTHING from history. My guest is writer and librarian Emily Jones. As a former teacher and current librarian in Arkansas, Emily shares her perspective on the fear and concern around certain books that are available in these public spaces. This episode is for anyone who has (or wants) a Soul Sister. In my book about friendship THE LIFE COUNCIL: 10 Friends Every Woman Needs, I write about my freshman college roommate and longtime LA roommate Lindsay Lawler. In the book, and in my life, Lindsay occupies the seat on my my life council that I call the SOUL SISTER. And in this conversation you're going to see why. We have been connected spiritually and logistically and our lives have been intertwined since we were 18 years old. In this episode, Lindsay and I talk about living in the dorms together, living in the Hollywood hills together, the ways we (accidentally) broke one another's hearts, and the ways we light each other up. Our bond and this conversation is a special one. But the BIG reason I wanted to share this Secret Tapes conversation with Lindsay with you right now is that Lindsay is a singer and songwriter based in nashville and her latest album comes out this week! It's called Peaches Holyoke and the first single Trying To Get Back To Texas is available on all streaming platforms now. This is Lindsay's first full length album in 8 years, it features 13 tracks, and you might also hear that new single Trying To Get Back To Texas spinning on OUTLAW COUNTRY on Sirius XM Channel 62. I love Lindsay, I love her music, and after listening to this excerpt of our Secret Tapes conversation about our deep friendship for over 25 years, i think you will love her too. I'm analyzing the results of this summer's podcast listener survey, where more than 1,000 people gave their feedback on 10 Things To Tell You. Listeners shared their favorite (and least favorite) episodes of the show, and suggested topics and guests for the future. I wanted to talk these results through with you because I value your feedback and want to involve you in the bigger picture of what we're creating here. I love making 10 Things To Tell You for you, and I also want to continue to make it helpful and entertaining. I'm also sharing some of my personal thoughts on the state of the podcasting industry right now, and as a listener, you're part of that industry. So I'm giving a little peek behind the curtain of what's happening from the creator side, based on my own experience and from conversations with many of my podcast friends. This episode is for anyone looking to transition well between the end of summer and beginning of fall. Whether you mark the end of summer by the school calendar, the weather, or football season, we have come to the end of the season. In this episode, I'm walking through 8 questions to ask yourself as we close one chapter of the year and enter into another. As usual, these questions work best when you share them with a friend, partner, coworker, or the whole family. They're also great for taking to your journal and sitting with your thoughts in this seasonal transition. This episode is for the therapy-curious and therapy champions. Ten years ago this summer, I was in one of the lowest points of my life. I had a toddler and a baby, was grieving the death of a loved one, the diagnosis of another loved one, and the near-fatal crisis of yet another loved one. My husband was away making a movie, so I was solo parenting and circumstantially very isolated during a rainy season that had flooded our home. And also....I had just started therapy for the first time. I needed the therapy. Making that phone call was one of the best decisions I've ever made. But as many people will tell you: it often gets (a lot) worse before it gets better. In this episode, I'm sharing 10 Things About Therapy that I've learned or noticed or want to share after 10 years of being on this journey. There are practical tips and also my personal stories. This is completely my own experience and not meant to be prescriptive or authoritative - just me, sharing my stuff. FULL SHOW NOTES HERE MENTIONED in this episode: My first book Share Your Stuff. Kevin Miller is a former pro athlete, respected personal development guide, top-ranking podcast host, published author, and father of nine who has devoted himself to helping people elevate their personal experience and improve the way they show up for others. After our fantastic conversation a few months ago on his show The Self Helpful Podcast, I knew I wanted to talk to him about his new book What Drives You. One of the things I've been working on personally this summer is examining and resetting some of the systems in my life, mostly professionally related, but also personally. This book and this conversation came at the perfect time. Identifying what motivates you can be such a key to your success. We're in a brand new series; For the Love of Friends and Community. Friendship and community often serve as the cornerstone for many women's lives, providing a vital support system that nurtures connection, empathy, and mutual growth. In a recent survey from Psych Central, nearly half of most women report having fewer than 3 close friends, one third report having between 4-9 close friends, and 12% say they have no close friends at all. We know that friendship contributes to more satisfaction in life and is good for our overall health. So what's the key to finding and keeping friends? How many friends do we need to get those good friend vibes? Our guest this week, author and podcaster Laura Tremaine, has written extensively about friendship, drawing from her own experiences and the experiences of other women she has talked to. Laura wants us to identify, create and nurture these deep connections that we long for. She also teaches us that friendship takes work, and vulnerably shares her friendship fails (yes, even a friendship expert has a few friend misses now and again). Jen and Laura discuss: The key qualities that make a friendship meaningful and enduring, and how those things are defined by what you value A rundown of the things we all may think are important about friendship and looking at the things that aren't as important as we've been made to believe they are How to navigate friendship breakups and friendships ending, allowing grief over that loss, and leaving room for that vacant “chair” to be filled by someone new Finding the “fellow obsessive” friend - the one you can geek out about with things that you both love Creating meaningful friendships is not just about having a social circle. It's about experiencing true companionship and vulnerability and support. And it's these soul connections that can bring so much joy and fulfillment to our lives. * * * Thank you to our sponsors! Thought-Provoking Quotes: “You can have all the data about why we connect or don't connect or how many people we can reasonably connect with. There's data and then there's actually real life.” - Laura Tremaine “It's great to have the friends who knew you when. It's also great to have friends who are like, ‘I had no idea you used to be that way and I'm glad we're meeting at this stage.'” - Laura Tremaine “My friendship with one of my best friends ended not by my choice, and it was as devastating as any romantic breakup I have ever been through.” - Laura Tremaine “Sharing your stuff, even when it's messy, brings you closer to who you are.” - Laura Tremaine “When you make a new friend and someone likes this newest version of you that you have fought so hard to be, how validating is that?” - Laura Tremaine “Friendship is a to-do and I have to put it on my to-do list like I put work tasks on my to-do list.” - Laura Tremaine Resources Mentioned in This Episode: Share Your Stuff I'll Go First (a book by Laura Tremaine) Friends song by Michael W.
