Three friends who get together to talk about books. Two read (Aarika and Jayna a.k.a. The Two Bluestockings) and one does not (His name is Chad, and he calls himself: The Awkward Red Sock). Together, they drink wine and discuss psychology, symbolism, maddening endings, and the possibility of being crushed by their TBR piles. Each week, Aarika and Jayna pick one of their favorite books and challenge each other to read it. They also take suggestions from listeners. It's a really good time. You should come along!

Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine - Gail Honeyman **Spoilers**

Jayna decided to give us a break from all the sad books we have chosen lately with this book. Smart, warm, uplifting, the story of an out-of-the-ordinary heroine whose deadpan weirdness and unconscious wit make for an irresistible journey as she realizes the only way to survive is to open her heart. Meet Eleanor Oliphant: she struggles with appropriate social skills and tends to say exactly what she's thinking. That, combined with her unusual appearance (scarred cheek, tendency to wear the same clothes year in, year out), means that Eleanor has become a creature of habit (to say the least) and a bit of a loner. Nothing is missing in her carefully timetabled life of avoiding social interactions, where weekends are punctuated by frozen pizza, vodka, and phone chats with Mummy. But everything changes when Eleanor meets Raymond, the bumbling and deeply unhygienic IT guy from her office. When she and Raymond together save Sammy, an elderly gentleman who has fallen on the sidewalk, the three become the kind of friends who rescue each other from the lives of isolation they have each been living. And it is Raymond's big heart that will ultimately help Eleanor find the way to repair her own profoundly damaged oneThanks for listening! To purchase the book,  https://amzn.to/3r3oJVpTo support the show (a.k.a the girl's reading habit), visit  https://www.patreon.com/twobluestockingsWe make candles inspired by our books: https://www.etsy.com/shop/TwoBluestockingsOur Merch: https://www.redbubble.com/people/2bluestockings/shop?asc=uFind us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/TwoBlueStockingsSupport the show Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/twobluestockings)

But Wilds, with their uncontrolled psychic abilities, need her help. They need the chronically underfunded Warehouse, the only school available for Wilds. But accepting a teen with potentially dangerous abilities puts her at odds with her boss; refusing means the teen faces life institutionalized, sedated, and under restraint. Stephen, the new telepathy teacher, is a Bred. His wealthy parents paid for his perfect geneticcode. He’s not used to the Warehouse’s long hours, to students who float beds through walls during nightmares, or send fishbowls through windows—not to mention the food sucks. The only bright spot is the fascinating Wild teacher in the next room who plays amazing cello or guitar music late at night. Kendle doesn’t think Stephen belongs at the Warehouse, but when he helps save her and her students from a violent mob, she wonders if she was wrong…and if a Bred like Stephen might fall for a Wild like her. But Kendle has little time for romance. We thought Covid was terrible because it crumbled economies, crippled businesses and left people feeling a sense of loss. That was until the veil was lifted. It took two and half years of on-and-off lockdowns for people to turn from merrily singing to each other from balconies, to being pissed about not being able to celebrate thanksgiving with their families, to finally being weary of anyone outside their family or core unit. Gone were the days of togetherness, ubuntu and globalisation. And in its place was something much worse, you see it wasn't just the loss of connection that weighed heavily on you, it was also the blatant mistrust. So when the veil lifted and we looked at each other, I mean really looked at each other, we realised we weren't human at all. Reya discovers that she is half Angel, half shifter, but it's the Angel bloodline in her that has the authorities sitting up and paying attention. She finds that she has to approach every situation with caution as she is quickly moved to an elite government basecamp, which comes with its own limitations and restrictions. But as Reya muddles through her newfound abilities with the guy assigned to 'train' her - Chase. As the lines between their relationship soon becomes blurred, Reya starts to realise that there's a lot more to her powers than she was initially led to believe. Up for review today is Ambassador Takes One for the Team by David C. Kopaska-Merkel (reviewed by Aarika) and Summers of Fire by Linda Strader (reviewed by Jayna). The Ambassador Takes One for the Team explores, humorously and tragically, the divine and the alien—and in doing so, the muddled, mixed mess that is humanity. By turns hilarious and hideous (frequently both at once!), these narratives are presented in a deceptively colloquial matter-of-fact voice. The unfortunate (mostly) human (mostly) speakers often don’t do well in their interactions with gods, other lifeforms, or the unknown—and those interactions tell us about our entirely human problems. Even those entities who interact successfully (from their point of view, at least) teach us more about ourselves than the ostensible narrator. We’re all ambassadors here, wherever we go—but sometimes acting on behalf of huge mistakes. To purchase Ambassador Takes One for the Team : https://amzn.to/3c3mME1Linda Strader is one of the first women hired on a fire crew with the U.S. Forest Service. A naive twenty-year-old in the mid-1970s, she discovers fighting wildfires is challenging—but in a man's world, they became only one of the challenges she would face. Battling fire is exhilarating, yet exhausting; the discrimination real and sometimes in her face. Summers of Fire is an Arizona to Alaska adventure story that honestly recounts the seven years Strader ventures into the heart of fires that scorch the land, vibrant friendships that fire the soul, and deep love that ends in devastating heartbreak. To purchase Summers of Fire: https://amzn.to/35VFLfSTo support the show (a.k.a the girl's reading habit), visit https://www.patreon.com/twobluestockingsWe make candles inspired by our books: https://www.etsy.com/shop/TwoBluestockingsOur Merch: https://www.redbubble.com/people/2bluestockings/shop?asc=uFind us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/TwoBlueStockingsSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/twobluestockings)

Aarika is down for the count with health issues, so its up to Jayna to pull double book duty while Chad does what Chad does best. Talk and put together a little bit of audio....Armored by Dawn Landry (This book is officially on the bestseller's list (update from January 2021!))In ARMORED, Dawn shares her story with honesty and encouragement as she relays how she was stretched and pressed into becoming a "care coach." As a tenured, business professional with no medical background and limited maternal instincts, she details how she redefined the role of caregiver to one that better suited her and her patient (her husband) throughout his three major, life-threatening illnesses. Through these experiences, Dawn has concluded that all of the equipment that we need to not only survive, but to overwhelmingly succeed, in the darkest of times is already wired within us. She leans on Ephesians 6:11-18 as a reminder that we are to put on our full armor to prepare for any battles that we face -- that armoring includes our God-Gifted Strengths, Talents, and Experiences which are unique to us. Has one of life's battles ever brought to your knees? Were you prepared? If you haven't experienced any struggles yet, do you know what you can do in advance to ready yourself? Advanced Praise: Jim Clifton, Chairman and CEO of Gallup, Inc. -- "Dawn's story reminds us that CliftonStrengths(R) coaching is both science and art. Through understanding and harnessing her strengths and those of Daran's, Dawn created a customized plan for his recovery -- proving there is no limit to what is possible. Their story is pure inspiration."Beneath A Blanket of Snow by Arlene Lomazoff-MarronJonathan Perkins had it all: a successful business, a stunning home, a wonderful family. He was on top of the world—until he nearly threw it all away. Meredith Perkins lived a life of luxury, courtesy of her husband’s hard work and diligence, but was isolated from the realities of the working world. Her days were spent decorating their spacious home, lunching with affluent friends, practicing yoga, and shopping in boutiques… Until her husband’s crime turned her world upside down. Meredith found herself hounded by the media, deserted by friends she had counted on for support, and struggling to reconstruct a life for her and her children. … But her friends kept their own secrets... This week, Aarika chose Moms Who Drink and Swear by Nicole Knepper! (which, to be fair, is basically how she lives her best mom life. No shame.)If you feel like your kids are killing you, you’ve come to the right place. This irreverant, hilarious guide to the trials of motherhood makes the perfect gift for mom—or any woman with a huge heart and a mouth that sometimes needs washing out with soap.Attention all potty-mouthed, cheap-wine-drinking mothers: Prepare to meet your match. Any bad thought you’ve had about your kids, Nicole Knepper has had worse. Much worse. It’s not that she doesn’t love her kids. It’s that she understands what a mind-f*?% it can be to try to civilize those wild little beasts.Based on her hugely popular Facebook page, “Moms Who Drink and Swear,” this book reveals why family dinners are like herpes, how to avoid smashing toys that are being fought over, and the joy of hearing that your son has murdered his imaginary friend. As Nicole rants and raves about caring for children (without crushing their souls), family togetherness (without too many tears), the saving grace of girlfriends (and vodka), and love and marriage (and all the baggage that goes with them), she gets to the heart of what every exasperated mom is thinking, just much funnier.Be sure to follow us, download our episode, drop a comment, send a message, send a dove, whatever you want!twitter @2BluestockingsInstagram two.blue.stockingsfacebook two blue stockings podcastGmail two.blue.stockings.books@gmail.comTo purchase the book, use this link here (we do receive a small commission, but it does not affect your price):https://amzn.to/3lZJFtVSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/twobluestockings)

ONE EPIC JOURNEYWhen the world as you know it is rent into shreds, you either survive or you die. When your friends, your neighbors, members of your own family starve to death in front of your young eyes, only a steel drive to live will rescue you. If your government turns on you, killing everyone in your community, only foresight and the guts to listen to it will help you. When widespread poverty and lack of hope destroy the fabric of reality, only fortune can save you. When you survive any or all of these traumatic events, you live to create the next generation.Cam and Tessa are the next generation.Raised by Holocaust survivors and refugees in New York City in the 1970’s, Tessa battles not only her own demons but those her family faced. She takes nothing for granted and relies only on herself as she navigates a dangerous and dark period of time in the city. Cam needs to escape the midwestern upbringing that began with his mother's journey from somewhere in Eastern Europe to an orphanage in Iowa and with his great grandfather’s early life in Ireland; and ends with his father’s spiraling and destructive behavior. Directionless and lost, Cam takes a risk to find his way.At a chance meeting, they discover that they are kindred spirits; and against the push from both sides, they clasp hands and decide to face whatever may come together.Woven dives deeply into events you learned about in history class and makes them personal. Written as a series of novellas, this book weaves the lives of four very different families into one story, showing that out of overwhelming adversity can come strength, hope, and a future no one predicted. If you would like to purchase the book, please use this link here:https://amzn.to/3m9Ug5yBe sure to follow us, download our episode, drop a comment, send a message, send a dove, whatever you want!twitter @2BluestockingsInstagram two.blue.stockingsfacebook two blue stockings podcastGmail two.blue.stockings.books@gmail.comSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/twobluestockings)

On this episode (hoping all technical difficulties are finally fixed!), we will be disccussing the book The Scarlett Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Can you guess this was Jayna's pick?Hester Prynne is a beautiful young woman. She is also an outcast. In the eyes of her neighbours she has committed an unforgivable sin. Everyone knows that her little daughter Pearl is the product of an illicit affair but no one knows the identity of Pearl's father. Hester's refusal to name him brings more condemnation upon her. But she stands strong in the face of public scorn, even when she is forced to wear the sign of her shame sewn onto her clothes: the scarlet letter "A" for "Adulteress." The story of Hester Prynne-found out in adultery, pilloried by her Puritan community, and abandoned, in different ways, by both her partner in sin and her vengeance-seeking husband-possesses a reality heightened by Hawthorne's pure human sympathy and his unmixed devotion to his supposedly fallen but fundamentally innocent heroine. In its moral force and the beauty of its conciliations, The Scarlet Letter rightly deserves its stature as the first great novel written by an American, the novel that announced an American literature equal to any in the world. To purchase, you can use this link.... https://amzn.to/35SOHCM Have you read it?Is it on your list? Let us know!Be sure to follow us, download our episode, drop a comment, send a message, send a dove, whatever you want!twitter @2BluestockingsInstagram two.blue.stockingsfacebook two blue stockings podcastGmail two.blue.stockings.books@gmail.comSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/twobluestockings)

Four seekers have arrived at the rambling old pile known as Hill House:Dr. Montague, an occult scholar looking for solid evidence of psychic phenomenaTheodora, his lovely and lighthearted assistantLuke, the adventurous future inheritor of the estateEleanor, a friendless, fragile young woman with a dark pastAs they begin to cope with chilling, even horrifying occurrences beyond their control or understanding, they cannot possibly know what lies ahead. For Hill House is gathering its powers- and soon it will choose one of them to make its own. Honorary mention goes to Communion : A true story by Whitley Strieber (https://amzn.to/390uGfL). This book was supposed to be discussed, but it was placed on the DNF (did not finish) list by both Aarika and Jayna. On December 26, 1985, at a secluded cabin in upstate New York, Whitley Strieber went skiing with his wife and son, ate Christmas dinner leftovers, and went to bed early. Six hours later, he found himself suddenly awake... and forever changed. Thus begins the most astonishing true-life odyssey ever recorded- one man's riveting account of his extraordinary experiences with visitors from "elsewhere"... how they found him, where they took him, what they did to him and why....Believe it. Or don't believe it. But read it- for this gripping story will move you and alter the way you experience your world.
