A lovable pair of newlyweds faces the challenges of married life as they paraphrase panels, explain exposition, and comment on all their favorite comics.
Maggie and Jon Schaefer-Hames: Podcasters
Feeling nostalgic for this year's JL Ape-ril crossover, where great comics podcast from across the sphere covered their favorite ape-related comics? Well, good news! Jon and Maggie have absolutely no sense of time, so here is the final installment four months late! Man, that was cool of us! Join us for around three hours of coverage of the entire 7 part series, as well as random disgressions into pretty much any topic you can think of! Check out these other entries in the crossover: The Outcasters Dial F for Flanger The Bat-Pod Coffee & Comics The Fanholes Once Upon a Geek Campus Comics Cast Quarter Bin Podcast Available wherever great podcasts can be found! The RodPod is back! Maggie and the two Jons cover issues 13 of Robots in Disguise and More Than Meets the Eye, as well as Spotlight: Megatron, as we continue our coverage of IDW: Phase 2 Transformers comics. In MTMTE 13, more meta jokes than you can shake a psychic paper at, Ultra Magnus gets drunk, and we learn a secret about Swerve, which would be the most shocking reveal of the episode if it weren't for what's coming. Spotlight: Megatron adds some context and depth to Megatron and Starscream's releationship, which we, of course, talk about in purely sexual terms. And RID 13, which has that shocking reveal I mentioned. The last few issues have had some pretty insane last page cliffhangers, but you are not going to see the end of this one coming. Also, Maggie and Jonathan talk about an incident in baseball history without providing enough context, and we respond as only we can to reader feedback. Jon M Wilson and Layne Join Jon back on Krynn, to cover chapters 7-9 of Dragons of Autumn Twilight. Listen in, as Jon gripes about and praises different parts of Weis and Hickman's ongoing new Dragonlance series, the trio comes up with ideas for what Jon would call a goth band, were he to be in one, and then be not-perplexed by the mystery this part of the book deals with, and see if you can figure out who the traitor is. (You won't be perplexed)
Just in time for, uh, Thank-a-ween, Mephisto is back, and he's brought more podcasters than you can shake a pitchfork at! Jon M Wilson and Layne from Ninjas and Bots podcast and Tim Price from The Outcasters podcast join Maggie and Jon for a talk about Avengers #83, The first appearance of the Rutland Halloween Parade in a preview of the first unofficial Marvel/DC crossover! It's also the first appearance of Valkyrie and the Women's Liberation Movement in comics, so we actually mostly talk about that. Featuring way more detailed of an explanation of Radical vs Liberal Feminist Theory than you will likely see on any comic podcast this year. Be sure to check out the rest of this year's Mephisto Vs crossover with: Ninjas and Bots The Outcasters Unpacking the Power of the Power Pack Resurrections: a Warlock and Thanos Podcast Coffee and Comics

MWC stands for Married with Cybertron, as Jon M Wilson joins the Schaefer-Hames on their journey through the IDW Phase 2 Transformers comics. On this episode, we cover issues 12 of RID and MTMTE. The Lost Light Crew battles a group of rogue Decepticons and fights to save the lives of some of their own, while back on Cybertron, Megatron's return is quickly unravelling all of the progress that's been done since the end of the war.
Ryan Daly from the Fire and Water Podcast network mentioned in passing that we should watch the cartoon, Bluey for a Married Watching Cartoons. Ryan was right! Join, Ryan, Maggie, and I as we talk about 3 episodes of what could be the best show of any medium currently running.
It's #JLMay once again! Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from Jon and Maggie. Layne stops by to help us cover the Batman: TAS episode, Christmas With the Joker and sticks around while we cover Frank Capra's classic Christmas movie, It's a Wonderful Life.
Deep Dive is back as Layne, Clinton, and the two Jons cover Chapters one and two of Book Two of Dragons of Autumn Twilight.
Minisode alert! It's Married with College time again as Maggie helps Jon with one of his Library classes as they review Dear Fahrenheit 451 by Annie Spence and write love letters and breakup letters to some of their favorite (and not so favorite) books and other media, including The Magician's Nephew, The Magicians, Bullet Train, Atlas Shrugged, Andor, and more!
The summer side project continues into the late fall, as Jon, Layne, and Clinton cover the last part of book one of book one. You read that right. Tolkein broke up his books into books, and so does Dragonlance. You gonna tell us that Tolkein was wrong? I don't think so! The heroes face Onyx, the black dragon in a final battle, the gods come back to Krynn, and we thankfully leave the gully dwarves behind, unfortunately not forever. Give it a listen!
The two Jons cover Robots in Disguise #10 with a cover and timey-wimey plot that will amaze you but nowhere near as much as the last page of Robots in Disguise #11 will. Things are about to kick into gear in IDW Phase 2!
The Summer of Dragonlance draws to an end but we have more book to cover! Join Jon, Jon, and Layne as we continue through chapters 17 and 18 of Dragons of Autumm Twilight. Then stick around as Jon interviews Ben Riggs, author of Slaying the Dragon: A Secret History of Dungeons and Dragons as they discuss Weis and Hickman's time at TSR as well as something called TSR West that you probably haven't heard of.
The Summer of Dragonlance continues as Layne, Jon, and Jon discuss chapters 13-16 of Dragons of Autumn Twilight! With discussions of the logistics of hauling around a giant wicker dragon, unintential dark humor while describing a scene where a character gets bathed in acid, and complex relations between people and gods reduced to the poem "Footprints", there's a lot going on in this one. (This podcast does feature adults using adult language. You have been warned.) Catch Jon M Wilson at jonreadscomics.com Layne is found at thebatmanuniverse.net
The Rod Pod returns! TFG1Mike stops by to discuss More Than Meets the Eye #s 9-11, the Shadowplay Saga with the two Jons. This one has an absolutely jaw-dropping finale and a last page you won't believe, so don't miss it!
Summer side project continues as Jon, Jon, and Clinton take on chapters 9-12 of Dragons of Autumn Twilight! This episode has everything! Really bad puns by one Jon and Clinton threatening to drive the other Jon out of his mind? Yep! Misuse of the word "Thee" in the text coming close to finishing the job? Oh yes! Jon literally moved to tears while reading a passage aloud? You know it! This plus pedantic discussions of AD&D vision rules, undead, spells, and Greek and Roman linguistics. I told you it has everything! Sent comments to marriedwcomics@gmail.com Jon M Wilson: @jonreadscomics Clinton Robison: @CoffeeComicsBlg Jon Schaefer Hames: @MWC_Podcast
The whole gang is here! The two Jons, Clinton, and Layne cover Dragons of Autumn Twilight, Chapters 5-8, as well as an exerpt from the AD&D Module, Dragons of Mystery. The companions survive near drowning and flying arrows only to fall headfirst into combat with creatures from beyond their experience. Will the quest be over before it begins? New episode! Join Maggie and Jon as they read through and review issues 7 and 8 of IDW's More Than Meets the Eye comics series. We meet the DJD who is scary as hell, and their leader Tarn, who could be the nastiest Decepticon in the series. We talk about the ramifications of eons-long warfare, good and evil in terms of the same, and the occasionally gray area between million year campaigner and war criminal. These and other fun topics on episode 10 of The Rod Pod!
Spoon! Maggie brings the Tick vs Pineapple Pokopo to the episode and to help us out with it, Ryan Daley from The Fire and Water Podcast Network stops by. We call him Speak, because that is what he does! Grab your surfboard and shark repellant and your taste for pineapple dishes as we discuss 90s ennui, the fallacy of the undistributed middle, monkeys in space, and Monkees as voice actors.
It's Halloween and that means Mephisto is up to his old tricks again, forcing us and 3 other podcasts to mix it up. This time around, Al Sedano from Resurrections: An Adam Warlock and Thanos Podcast joins us to cover the most unlikely crossover that you will ever love: My Little Pony/Transformers: Friendship in Disguise. Join us as we cover the episode "Suited For Success" from Friendship is Magic so that poor Al isn't going into this completely blind, before we dive into issue #1. Optimus and Bumblebee meet Twilight Sparkle! Rarity matches wits and vanity with Starscream! And Arcee kicks Starscream in the face! Be sure to check out parts 2-4 with Resurrections: An Adam Warlock and Thanos Podcast, Unpacking the Power of the Power Pack, and new to the crossover this year, Outcasters: Batman and the Outsiders Podcast Til all are one, you know you are our very best friends!
In Married Watching Cartoons, Jon and Maggie take turns introducing the other to a cartoon they may not be as familiar with. This episode, Sean Ross from Secret Wars and the Bat Pod basically wouldn't let us do this episode without him, so here he his! We talk about quoting lines from cartoons as a means of seduction, muse about what Sean's baseball career would have been like if he'd never seen this episode, decide how a made-up-for-this-episode cyborg stacks up against other cartoon villains in and out of the Marvel Universe and cast our own Spider-Friends!
Jon and Maggie dust off their comic books and remind themselves how to appreciate static images as they cover Fantastic Four #s 334-336 which serves as both the end of the Acts of Vengeance storyline as well as the debut of Walt Simonson's run on the series. Jon and Maggie are watching cartoons while remaining married the entire time! Maggie's favorite thing ever is Pokemon while Jon knows it mostly as a collectible card game that he never played but complained about a lot. How will Jon feel about The Fortune Hunters? How many Pokemon can Maggie name in 30 seconds? Prepare for trouble. Better make it double.
Join Maggie and Jon and they match wits with the world's greatest (10 year old) detective! Maggie reads Jon The Case of The Two-fisted Poet. Will Leroy lose Sally forever to a snobby kid who went to school in England? Then Jon reads Maggie The Case of the Wounded Toe where the weird kid who keeps teeth in a jar gets shot n the foot. You have received a new transmission from the Rod Pod. Jon and Maggie are trapped in a spacecraft shaped like Rodimus' head with only their cats and occasional issues of IDW's Transformers comics that the Autobot Sky Lynx periodically drops by. No one knows why any of this is happening. This month, Sky Lynx has brought Robots in Disguise issues 7 to 9, which includes the first part of the Combiners Wars. Things get tense on the political front as moral compromises get considered and the environment of Cybertron reveals its biggest threat yet! Welcome to our new format! Jon and Maggie are taking turns introducing the other to cartoons that the other may not be as familiar with. On our debut episode, Jon introduces Maggie to the Smurfs! Take time out of the craziness of real life for some escapism. Jon brings in King Smurf, an episode which *checks notes* shows the Smurfs descend into full-on fascism as half of them develop a cult-like worship of one of their own which almost destroys them all. ... Look, we recorded this awhile ago, we swear. Send comments and show suggestions to: marriedwatchingcartoons@gmail.com
We close out 2020 and this phase of our podcast with the comic that we nearly started with. Listen for one last comics hurrah before we change over to covering cartoons in 2021. Reed Richards and Sue Storm get married but not before having to deal with Doctor Doom's nefarious wedding gift and a blind guy driving a bomb into New York Harbor. Listen in to say "Good Riddance 2020" with us!
Happy Holidays from Married with Comics! Clinton Robison from Coffee and Comics as well as Fanfilm Fridays stops by to discuss one of his favorites and ours, the cleverly named, He-Man and She-Ra: A Christmas Special! Celebrate the holiday of your choice while we dive into this 55 minute long toy commercial in which the Evil Lord of Destruction gets transformed by the Christmas spirit into something almost...nice?
It's Halloween, so that means Mephisto has compelled us into a spooky crossover yet again, this time with Tim Price and Sean from Secret Wars and Beyond podcast. We cover Tomb of Dracula #44 and Doctor Strange #14 as the Lord of Vampires and Sorcerer Supreme fight to the death! Stick around as we veer off into tangents about Brahm Stokers' novel, God in comic books, and the 1970s. Happy Halloween everyone! In addition to the Secret Wars and Beyond podcast, make sure to catch Resurrections: An Adam Warock and Thanos Podcast as well as Unpacking the Power of Power Pack for the rest of the crossover.
Jon matches wits with everyone's favorite 10 year old detective, and almost gets too distracted by how violent life was for the youth of the '60s to solve the case. Will he recover in time?
New episode! Mephisto casts the dastardly Spell of Comics Apathy on us and only Tim Price, the Podcrasher can save us with one of our favorite comics of all time, Bone #10. You'd be a stupid, stupid rat creature to miss this one!
Jon reads an Encyclopedia Brown mystery to Maggie and she tries to solve it. Jon remembers this one from childhood and thinks the clue will be too obscure for Maggie to solve. Is he right, or will Maggie's repeat viewings of QI win her the day?
The world may be a garbage fire, but at least there's a new Rod Pod! Jon and Maggie read through and discuss IDW Transformers More Than Meets the Eye #6: Interiors, where we deal with severe PTSD, depression, and someone accidentally getting shot in the head. MTMTE is the funny on purpose one, remember. In Robots in Disguise #6 Syndromica, Orion Pax, Hardhead, and some lizard guy named Garnak encounter the fruition of Shockwave's ancient plan. And Pax takes on Monstructor because that's how he rolls. With The Touch, Less Than Meets the Eye, and Intrigue!
Maggie Reads Jon an Encyclopedia Brown mystery and he tries to solve it. Can you solve the case of the Balloon Man, a case that has perplexed even the Chief of Police of Idaville before Jon can? (I wouldn't get too worked up. Chief Brown is stalwart and true, but his deductive reasoning skills are dangerously lacking, considering his job).
