PAUL COPAN answers "Is the God of the Old Testament a Vindictive Bully?"

The world's most outspoken atheist, Richard Dawkins, wrote in his book, The God Delusion,  “The God of the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully.”   No wonder there are some Christians today who want to distance themselves from that God and focus solely on the God of the New Testament and Jesus Christ. It's easier to think simplistically that Jesus changed all that, and that the vindictive bully of the Old Testament has been replaced by the loving, forgiving, sacrificial God of the New Testament. Our guest is Christian philosopher and apologist Paul Copan, author of Is God a Vindictive Bully?: Reconciling Portrayals of God in the Old and New Testaments (Baker, 2022), winner of the Christianity Today 2023 Award of Merit in the category of Apologetics & Evangelism. In this book, Dr. Copan takes on some of the most difficult Old Testament challenges and places them in their larger historical and theological contexts. He explores the kindness, patience, and compassion of God in the Old Testament and shows how Jesus in the New Testament reveals both God's divine kindness and also God's divine severity. The God of the Old Testament is definitely fully revealed in the person of Jesus Christ, but it turns out to be the same God. Dr. Paul Copan (Ph.D., Philosophy, Marquette University) is a Christian theologian, analytic philosopher, apologist, and author. He is a professor at Palm Beach Atlantic University (Florida) where he is the Pledger Family Chair of Philosophy and Ethics. He is the author or editor of over forty books. He recently edited War, Peace, and Violence: Four Christian Views (IVP, 2022) and wrote Loving Wisdom: A Guide to Philosophy and Christian Faith (Eerdmans, 2020). Among his previous published works, we find Is God a Moral Monster: Making Sense of the Old Testament God (Baker, 2011). The Christian faith will always have opponents, skeptics, and seekers who will attempt to challenge its credibility, which is why apologetics is always a necessity. Moreover, we need apologists because there are a wide diversity of intellectual challenges and personalities which must be engaged when defending the faith. On today's show, my guest is a Christian apologist with a new book that provides a unique approach to presenting Christianity to the skeptic. His name is Neil Shenvi and we discussed his book Why Believe? A Reasoned Approach to Christianity. Neil Shenvi (Ph.D., University of California, Berkeley) has worked as a research scientist at Yale University and Duke University and has published over thirty peer-reviewed papers. He is a regular blogger at Shenvi Apologetics writing on current issues and book reviews. He is married to Christina and currently homeschools their four children. Today, on a special bonus episode, a Theonomist and a NCT guy walk into a bar. A few minutes later, some good old fashioned alehouse apologetics breaks out. In this special bonus episode of the ThinkPod, you'll listen in to an after-hours conversation between Joel Settecase and Peter Boland of 5 Solas Studios. The two have theological disagreement over particular issues (Joel is a New Covenant Theologian, and Peter is a Theonomist), but both are fully committed to the truth of God's word, and the necessity of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. At the recent Cruciform Conference, the two men had vigorously debated theology, and then after the conference they sat down to record an episode on brotherly unity for the 5 Solas Studios podcast. Afterward, they stopped by an alehouse somewhere in Indianapolis. As they started hanging out, Joel hit record on his phone and hit record, just in case the conversation turned out to be worth sharing. And something really incredible happened. Early on in their conversation, they had both agreed that, despite their disagreements, if an atheist were to come in and start challenging the truth of the Christian message, they would both immediately join forces and defend the truth, sharing the Gospel, in lock-step. As it turned out, that is exactly what happened. As you'll hear at the 14:30 mark, a man approached them, as if drawn to them, and conveyed that he had heard what they were talking about. First, the man said he thought it was wonderful that they were talking about the Bible, etc. However, as they talked and took the conversation outside, the truth came out: he was opposed to God, and he did not believe in Jesus. He also shared some difficult details from his life. You'll hear what happened next in this very special bonus episode of the Think Pod. This is a real-life evangelistic conversation between two Christians and a non-believer. It's been edited for content and to make the flow of the story more coherent for the podcast format. In the end, they hope that Jesus was glorified, and that the truth would stick. A quick note on the conclusion: the recording cuts out at the end. Here's what transpired afterward: in all, the three talked for about 40 minutes. After Joel presented the Gospel, the man said he believed in a supreme being, but not the God of the Bible. Joel said that a "supreme being" didn't die for his sins, but that the true God did (Joel let his Calvinism slip there, in light of the doctrine of Particular Redemption/Limited Atonement). Peter pressed him with the truth that he really did know God, and he had antipathy toward him. He ultimately got fed up, and after Joel and Peter reminded him that he approached them (not the other way around), Mike left, got into his car and drove away. If you're a believer, please pray for this man—that his eyes would be opened to the truth of the Gospel, and that he would find forgiveness and peace in Jesus. Find out more about the book Messiah in the Passover: https://messiahinthepassover.com/free-downloads/ MISSION Chosen People Ministries exists to pray for, evangelize, disciple, and serve Jewish people everywhere and to help fellow believers do the same. The mission was founded in Brooklyn, New York in 1894 by Rabbi Leopold Cohn, a Hungarian Jewish immigrant with a zeal to share the knowledge of Yeshua (Jesus) the Messiah with God’s chosen people. Today, Chosen People Ministries serves in sixteen countries across the globe. Our outreach programs include evangelism and discipleship, Messianic Centers and congregations, equipping the local church for Jewish evangelism, print and web publications, and benevolence work. With your help, we will continue proclaiming the Good News through Jesus the Messiah to Jewish people around the world. HISTORY How It All Began In the latter part of the 19th century people were on the move, for many different reasons. Political and social upheavals in Europe continued throughout the turn of the century. This turmoil generated an intense longing, both for material stability and religious freedom. It was during this time of tremendous change that a man was born in Berezna, a small town in eastern Hungary, whose life would become interwoven with these people on the move. The Orthodox Jewish community of Berezna was the birthplace of Leopold Cohn, who was destined for a momentous quest. In this part of Europe, Orthodox Judaism was a way of life. Traditional Judaism was all-pervasive in its impact on a daily existence and there was zeal for the Torah (Law). It was not surprising, then, that Leopold Cohn became a rabbi. A Rabbi’s Quest It was during his years of rabbinic study that certain portions of Scripture led Leopold Cohn to seek more knowledge about the Messiah. He searched the Scriptures and questioned other rabbis, but still found no satisfactory answers. One rabbi even advised him to go to America where, he said, people knew more about the Messiah. Strange advice, it would seem, yet this noted rabbi said he would lose his position if he were to discuss the Messiah. Later, Leopold Cohn recalled this incident and felt that the rabbi knew something about the Messiah, Jesus. Real Jewish Faith Cohn knew that there was but one course for him to follow: he must share the knowledge of the Messiah, Yeshua, with his Jewish people. He explained an early encounter with members of the local community: “I showed them from the Scriptures that to believe in Yeshua was Jewish faith, real Jewish faith.” This became Leopold Cohn’s life calling. It also became a guiding principle for our ministry, which he founded in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn, New York, in 1894. To the Jew First Leopold Cohn began this ministry by holding meetings in a store which was a renovated horse stable. He founded his work upon faith, in response to the Scriptural exhortation of Romans 1:16, “For I am not ashamed of the Gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto sa...
