Educational analytics tend toward aggregation, asking what a “normative” learner does. In The Left Hand of Data: Designing Education Data for Justice (MIT Press, 2024, open access at this link), educational researchers Matthew Berland and Antero Garcia start from a different assumption—that outliers are, and must be treated as, valued individuals. Berland and Garcia argue that the aim of analytics should not be about enforcing and entrenching norms but about using data science to break new ground and enable play and creativity. From this speculative vantage point, they ask how we can go about living alongside data in a better way, in a more just way, while also building on the existing technologies and our knowledge of the present. The Left Hand of Data explores the many ways in which we use data to shape the possible futures of young people—in schools, in informal learning environments, in colleges, in libraries, and with educational games. It considers the processes by which students are sorted, labeled, categorized, and intervened upon using the bevy of data extracted and collected from individuals and groups, anonymously or identifiably. When, how, and with what biases are these data collected and utilized? What decisions must educational researchers make around data in an era of high-stakes assessment, surveillance, and rising inequities tied to race, class, gender, and other intersectional factors? How are these complex considerations around data changing in the rapidly evolving world of machine learning, AI, and emerging fields of educational data science? The surprising answers the authors discover in their research make clear that we do not need to wait for a hazy tomorrow to do better today.

When my guest today came over to my office to hang out and chill Monday a couple of weeks ago. I was intrigued with her because it was kind of refreshing that we had had some pretty similar experiences, but this also seemed like someone I could learn some lessons from. Ellie Berland is a sacred life and business coach, and she is a big believer in pretty much everything can be seen as divine - that even includes your kinky side.  Her pendulum has swung from purity culture into the poly lifestyle, and then into swinging, and now, into a celibate lifestyle as she learns more about herself. We talked about a lot of things in this episode; BDSM and finding a Dom, connecting to your body, and learning to captain her own ship.    Find Ellie on Instagram or her BioPage.  Learn more about afterglow and use code XOKRISTEN to get a 7-day free trial.

Mike Berland is nuts... or at least that's what I thought when I first hosted him on this very show years ago. He claimed to have developed a tool that analyzes what has cultural momentum, and therefore what the future likely looks like. But after he kept predicting trends using his "M Factor" analysis, I knew he was onto something. (It was also a bit creepy!) I ask him what 2023 has in store for us.  Berland is the founder of Decode_M, recently acquired by Penta Group. Berland applies a physics definition to culture. Mass X Velocity = Momentum. They do this by analyzing all public available information from social media, blogs, news, and publicly accessible data. He explains why 7-11 will be the surprising brand winner of 2023, and ideas that have momentum you can tap into.  What are the big ideas that will drive you to success in 2023 with steadily rising inflation? Helping customers save money instead of using credit, moving from whimsy to function, and getting your brand ready for the stakeholder economy. Who says compassion doesn't belong at work? Not Laura Berland, founder and executive director of the non-profit Center for Compassionate Leadership. For Laura (and, frankly, me), compassion has a very central place in the workplace and leadership.Though there are skeptics, there is scientific evidence that compassion in the workplace supports more productive teams and more profits for the organization. But the compassion gets to start from within and this is a skill that can be taught - you can cultivate compassion within yourself and it starts with taking care of yourself first. On this episode, Laura and I talk about the difference between compassion and empathy, why there are skeptics out there, how to meet those skeptics where they're at, why vulnerability is so important, what it means to be a compassionate leader, and so much more.We need more conversations like this, rather than those where we're trying to convince others to think our way. Everyone has their own path and their own timeline. Hopefully, with more conversations and evidence around the benefits of compassion, those skeptics will become believers. Until then, listen in and be a positive role model for change!About Laura Berland:Laura Berland is the Founder and Executive Director of the non-profit Center for Compassionate Leadership. Through community, education, and research, the Center supports leaders as catalysts to open hearts and minds to our shared common humanity, and to urgently develop solutions to global crises and suffering at scale.
