We are talking to Dr Josh Swamidass who has written a fascinating book on Adam and Eve using his scientific background in computational biology and medicine to discuss the tensions between modern science and the narratives of Genesis. What he finds is an interesting take on the origins debate that leaves a lot more room and a lot less tension between the various sides of Christendom. We hope to dig in to Dr Swamidass' conclusions a little further and their implications for our theology. -- Dr. Swamidass MD, Ph.D. is a physician, scientist, and Associate Professor of Laboratory and Genomic Medicine at Washington University in Saint Louis. He leads a computational biology group that studies information at the intersection of biology, chemistry, and medicine (http://swami.wustl.edu/). He is also a speaker for Intervarsity Christian Fellowship and Veritas Forums. Recently, he served as a Science Adviser for AAAS Science for Seminaries, and now blogs at Peaceful Science (http://peacefulscience.org/). Dr. Swamidass is the author of his new book, titled: The Genealogical Adam and Eve. Here he tests a scientific hypothesis: What if the traditional account is somehow true, with the origins of Adam and Eve taking place alongside evolution? Does command command genocide? Does Jesus love the Canaanites (those cleared out by Joshua's conquests for the promised land)? We're talking with Randal Rauser who has debated on this topic and authored (and is authoring) books discussing this topic. "Randal Rauser is a systematic and analytic theologian of evangelical persuasion. He is driven by apologetic concerns and above all by the tireless pursuit of truth. The downside is that this requires him to recognize when he is wrong (which is often) for truth is complex and it offers us no guarantees that we shall always find it. At the same time, Randal does not despair of finding truth, for he believes that in a profound sense Jesus Christ is the truth. For Randal, being like Jesus means knowing the truth, loving the truth, and living the truth. As Randal seeks to live the truth he promotes a culture of life that is anti-militaristic and pro-family, pro-environment and anti-abortion, anti-consumerist and pro-animal. A disciple on the way … alas, he is not half as smart or as good or as right as he thinks he is." The Side B Podcast is well worth listening to: "The SIDE B Podcast is a story-driven apologetics forum that helps listeners understand why and how people are pushed away or drawn towards God and Christianity, to ‘listen to the other side' in a practical, conversational way. Interviewing one former atheist each show, the SIDE B Podcast encourages both Christians and non-believers to listen to the stories and views of former atheists and learn their reasons for rejecting God, becoming open towards God, and eventually becoming a Christian. In a culture that readily dismisses Christianity as not plausible and not attractive, SIDE B Podcast shows how and why thoughtful, intelligent people can and do move from disbelief to belief."
