A Note from James:So the question is, I really feel that in order to get not good at something, but great at something, you have to be obsessed. You can't just wake up and decide to be obsessed—it has to be deep, almost irrational. Obsession is like addiction. It throws your life off balance, and yet... there's this insane joy when you enter the subculture of your obsession and get better at it.I've seen this recently in crypto. I saw it in chess in Norway, commenting on what might've been the best chess tournament ever. And I felt it again when I sat down with Dirk Jan ten Geuzendam from New In Chess. We didn't just talk about chess. We talked about obsession, aging, failing at something you love, and trying to find your place in a subculture that's moved on without you.If you care about learning, obsession, or just love chess, you're going to get something out of this episode. Dirk and I recorded this in Stavanger, Norway. I hope you love this conversation as much as I did being a part of it.Episode Description:What does it mean to return to your first love after nearly 30 years away? In this special crossover episode, James Altucher sits down with Dirk Jan ten Geuzendam, editor of New In Chess magazine, to reflect on his lifelong (and recently rekindled) obsession with chess. They explore how obsession shapes mastery, why wisdom sometimes trumps raw skill, and what it's like to try and reclaim an old identity as an older version of yourself.James opens up about losing games to kids half his age, obsessively chasing improvement, and why it still might be okay to fail—as long as the journey is honest. From teenage blitz tournaments to dinner with Garry Kasparov, from neuroscience to narrative writing, this episode is as much about how to live as it is about how to play. What You'll Learn:Why obsession is both a superpower and a dangerHow James approaches relearning chess after a 27-year breakWhat changes in the brain as we age—and how to work with itThe surprising ways chess opens doors in life, business, and writingWhy storytelling and vulnerability matter more than "success" aloneTimestamped Chapters:[00:00] The Power of Obsession[01:00] Travel Tales: Norway and Crypto[03:00] Chess Commentary and Podcasting with Dirk Jan[05:00] Dirk Jan's Intro on James Altucher[08:00] James' Curiosity and Love of Learning[10:00] Starting Chess at 17 and Becoming Addicted[13:00] Losing to Irena Krush and Facing Limits[17:00] Chess, Ego, and Real-World Consequences[22:00] How Chess Skills Apply to Business Problems[26:00] Writing as a Path Through Vulnerability[33:00] Returning to Chess: Memory, Aging, and Rediscovery[37:00] Eric Rosen, Coaches, and Mental Decline[41:00] Pattern Recognition vs. Calculation[47:00] What Makes Chess Players Unique[50:00] Interviewing Kasparov, Judit Polgar, Hikaru[56:00] Obsession and the Myth of Talent[58:00] Will the Book Get Written?[60:00] The James Altucher Invitational[62:00] Reflecting on the JourneyAdditional Resources:

After a shift to online learning during COVID-19, EdTech – everything from digital whiteboards and eBooks to Google Classroom and virtual reality equipment – is an industry that's gone from strength to strength in terms of size, scope and profitability. But as the UK is beginning to see a narrative form around the virtues of a ‘screen free' childhood and, further abroad, countries like Sweden move back to more ‘traditional' methods of teaching, many parents are left questioning the current use of EdTech and its effect on their children. To help understand how we should approach the growing presence of EdTech, as well as what ‘good' EdTech might look like, Vicki is joined by Natalia Kucirkova, Professor of Early Childhood and Development at the University of Stavanger, Norway, and Director of the International Centre for EdTech Impact.Talking points:Could possible harms warrant us taking the ‘precautionary principle' when it comes to EdTech in schools? How exactly does ‘transparency', ‘accountability', and ‘fairness' play into principles of ‘ethical' EdTech? Is independent research and evaluation really enough to keep Big Tech accountable?Tech Shock is a Parent Zone production.

Far from the battlefield the First World War spurred a massive increase in industrial output in the United States. Arms and armaments, ships and steel, a vast stream of materiel poured from American factories, mines, and mills to feed the insatiable maw of war. The consequent strain placed on American railroad infrastructure left it vulnerable to environmental disruption, such as that caused by the great blizzard of 1916-17. These developments marked a significant chapter in the environmental history of American industry. In this episode of the Hagley History Hangout we chat with Gerard Fitzgerald, visiting fellow at the Greenhouse Center for Environmental Humanities at the University of Stavanger and lecturer in the Department of Engineering and Society at the University of Virginia, whose latest research considers the environmental context of industrialization in the United States during World War One. In support of his work Fitzgerald has received funding from the Center for the History of Business, Technology, and Society at the Hagley Museum and Library. Capturing shooting stars with your doorbell cam We've had the first meteor shower of 2025 – you may have missed it but your doorbell cam may have recorded it. The Quadrantids shower has captivated both amateur and professional astronomers, some of whom are now working together to find the meteors once they land on the Earth's surface. When this occurs, there is a strong likelihood that the aptly named UK Fireball Alliance will identify them. This alliance consolidates images and videos from various sources, including doorbell cameras, dash-cams, security systems, and professional telescopes. The primary objective is to issue a comprehensive alert to scientists, indicating where they can locate the fallen meteors. Norwegian ferry operator Norled wins coveted award for innovations driving industry decarbonisation

Stavanger-headquartered Norled has been honoured as The Maritime CleanTech Partner of the Year 2024, highlighting the company's pioneering role in setting new standards for both innovation in the Norwegian maritime industry and sustainable maritime passenger transport worldwide. The award underscores the critical importance of collaboration and bold thinking in advancing maritime decarbonisation goals. As an industry front-runner, Norled has been prepared to shoulder significant risks in a new market, put investments in place and take concrete action to advance the maritime transition. The company has succeeded in achieving significant milestones including the world's first fully electric car ferry, the MS Ampere, which went into service in 2015, operating the world's first electric high-speed ferry in 2022, the MS Medstraum, and in 2023 introducing the MS Hydra, the world's first zero-emission ferry powered by hydrogen and state-of-the-art battery technology. These successes in winning public contracts with advanced vessels set an example for traditional passenger transport companies globally, as many countries look to electrify their maritime transport infrastructure. They also demonstrate the real-world feasibility of green technologies on different inshore vessel types, as well as providing a blueprint for scaling solutions to larger tonnage operating internationally. Vision for real change "It's an honour to receive this award and the timing is perfect, particularly as we grow our focus on the express boat side. It fuels our determination to deliver low- and zero-emission solutions, proving that collaboration and innovation are the key to a zero-emission future," said Norled CEO Heidi Wolden. "I extend my thanks to the jury, our partners within Maritime CleanTech, the authorities for their ambitious policies, Maritime CleanTech for their help coordinating funding, and of course all our dedicated employees. Together, we're creating real change and paving the way for a cleaner maritime industry." Revolutionary battery-swapping solution Norled continues to push the envelope with its upcoming SHIFTR system, a state-of-the-art battery-swapping solution set to debut on the fully electric fast ferry MV Baronessen, which was recently delivered to public transport provider Ruter for operations in the Oslo Fjord. Developed in a joint venture with maritime technology vendor SEAM and robotics company Aarbakke Innovation, SHIFTR exemplifies Norled's relentless pursuit of zero-emission solutions that benefit society at large. "Norled took this challenge seriously and has come up with solutions to all the challenges we gave them. Together with our partners, we are creating one of the first emission-free fjords in the world," said Ruter CEO Bernt Reitan.
