We have all heard some of the rash proclamations and condemnations made by Critical Race Theory proponents and initiatives, but what does CRT entail and how has it entrenched itself in politics, hospitals and treatments, corporations and policies, schools and education? Dr. Neil Shenvi and Dr. Pat Sawyer answer all those questions and many more. Authors and academics, these two tackle the big issues. There is no shying away from the fundamental ideologies carefully tucked beside the CRT package, such as queer theory, trans ideology, critical pedagogy, intersectional feminism and others, but Shenvi and Sawyer give understandable explanations and direction to reasonable and biblical solutions. They address the issues trending now and provide understanding where a lack of the same has kept individuals and the church from knowing how to move, respond and pray. You will be masterfully educated and then encouraged by the information and challenge that they set before you. How Should Christians Think About Critical Theory? What is it? Why does it matter? How is it effecting us?In this Interview with Neil Shenvi and Pat Sawyer, Jonathan Morrow helps us understand what critical theory is, why it is not biblical, and how critical theory and the secular social justice movement is influencing the church, culture, and the next generation.Contemporary critical theory's ideas about race, class, gender, identity, and justice have dramatically shaped how people think, act, and view one another—in Christian and secular spheres alike. In Critical Dilemma, authors Neil Shenvi and Pat Sawyer illuminate the origins and influences of contemporary critical theory, considering it in the light of clear reason and biblical orthodoxy. While acknowledging that it can provide some legitimate insights regarding race, class, and gender, Critical Dilemma exposes the false assumptions at the heart of critical theory, arguing that it poses a serious threat to both the church and society at large.Drawing on exhaustive research and careful analysis, Shenvi and Sawyer condemn racism, urge Christians to seek biblical justice, and offer a path forward for racial healing and unity while also opposing critical theory's manifold errors.Get the Book >> Critical Dilemma: The Rise of Critical Theories and Social Justice Ideology―Implications for the Church and Society

What is Critical Theory (CT), and how should Christians think about it? Drs. Neil Shenvi and Pat Sawyer join us to discuss their new book, 'Critical Dilemma,' which was named World Magazine's 2023 Book of the Year. They explain why CT is so skeptical of received wisdom, how it's different than critical thinking, the big emphasis on power plays, and whether it's okay for Christians to use the phrase “social justice.” (The conversation begins at 5:45.) Plus, in “Headlines” (1:05), Dr. Keathley offers ways you can already be praying for the 2024 election. And in “On My Bookshelf” (35:25), Drs. Shenvi and Sawyer tell us what they're reading right now. Since Harvard president Claudine Gay resigned over accusations of plagiarism, many in the media have defended her. The Associated Press, for instance, tweeted: “Harvard's president's resignation highlights new conservative weapon against colleges: plagiarism.” It's not clear how Gay's lack of academic integrity could be a conservative “weapon,” but, according to Neil Shenvi, this willingness to ignore or defend plagiarism reflects how Critical Theory “has saturated our culture.” In a thread on X, Shenvi documented how key texts of Critical Race Theory disparage objective truth, merit, and neutrality: “whether they know it or not, many progressives have imbibed (CRT) categories, its skepticism towards ‘merit,' and its belief in the ubiquity of ‘white supremacy culture.'” In other words, for many in the press and academia, plagiarism is no big deal if you're from an oppressed class and have progressive views. These ideas challenge the very idea of truth and must be clarified and confronted.

God has revealed Himself to us through His Spirit, through what He has created, through His word, and through His Son. The evidence of His existence is manifold. He did not lavish us with so much so that we might think His existence is something of a mere intellectual curiosity, but so that He might bring dead people back to life. I'm excited to present another episode featuring Neil Shenvi, co-author of Critical Dilemma. In this conversation, we unravel the complexities of contemporary critical theories like critical race theory and social justice ideology. Shenvi and co-author Pat Sawyer navigate the implications of these theories for society and the church, condemning racism while advocating for racial healing and unity. Their book balances the valid insights of critical theory with critical analysis, exposing its foundational flaws. Praised for its scholarly depth and accessibility, Critical Dilemma offers a nuanced understanding of these divisive theories. It provides a valuable resource for addressing societal challenges and engaging with illiberal progressive arguments. Neil Shenvi has an A.B. in chemistry from Princeton and a Ph.D. in theoretical chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley. He was a research scientist at Yale University and Duke University and has published over thirty peer-reviewed scientific papers. In addition, his writings on critical theory have been published by the Journal of Christian Legal Thought, the Gospel Coalition, Eikon, Ratio Christi, and the Liberty University Law Review, among others. He is married and currently homeschools his four children.SHOW NOTES: https://www.aaronshamp.com/podcast/neil-shenviSUPPORT THIS PODCAST: https://www.aaronshamp.com/support ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––Track: Perseverance — Land of Fire [Audio Library Release]Music provided by Audio Library Plus––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

Are racial discrimination and systemic racism widespread problems in America? The horrific tragedy of George Floyd seemingly caused a resurgence of critical (race) theory into mainstream media, which eventually led to an infiltration into public schools, institutions of higher learning, and even churches! But on what grounds should Christians reject it as a viable solution to social issues like racism and sexism? In this midweek podcast episode, Dr. Neil Shenvi and Dr. Pat Sawyer continue their conversation with Frank on critical theory as detailed in their brand-new book 'Critical Dilemma: The Rise of Critical Theories and Social Justice Ideology―Implications for the Church and Society.' Is critical theory covertly pushing for pedophilia? Is criminal law oppressive? What's the connection between race, sexuality, and social justice according to critical theory? All this and more will be discussed in this follow-up episode! To view the entire VIDEO PODCAST be sure to join our CrossExamined private community. Dr. Neil Shenvi, coauthor, “Critical Dilemma” Critical Dilemma The post 2821. Critical Theory, Gender, Race and Class – Dr. Neil Shenvi, 10/9/23 first appeared on Issues, Etc..
The conversation of race in American society isn't going away, as there is still much to talk about and a lot of healing left to do. Critical Race Theory seems to find itself at the center of much of that conversation. Whether you applaud restrictions on CRT or see those restrictions as masking a real issue, knowing what CRT is can be very important. Author and Speaker Neil Shevni has his Ph.D. in Chemistry but has taken up the task of helping Christians understand Critical Race Theory. He joined Bobby back in 2020 for a live discussion, answering questions such as: What is the difference between Critical Theory and Critical Race Theory? What is the worldview that unpins Critical Race Theory, and is that worldview compatible with Christianity? How does CRT work? And many other important topics. - Lela Gilbert: Update on Israel - PAT SAWYER & NEIL SHENVI: Critical Dilemma: The Rise of Critical Theories and Social Justice Ideology―Implications for the Church and Society - "Should Christians Celebrate Columbus Day - in Light of the Church's Questionable History in its Discovery?"
Has anyone at your church ever claimed that "whiteness is wickedness", "sin is oppressive", or "the Bible was written from the perspective of the oppressed?" Outlandish statements like these are a product of what's called critical theory. You've increasingly heard the term used in the media within recent years, but what exactly is critical theory, why is it harmful, and how do you address it if it's present at your church? In this week's podcast, Dr. Neil Shenvi and Dr. Pat Sawyer join Frank to unpack the good and the bad of critical theory as detailed in their brand-new book, 'Critical Dilemma: The Rise of Critical Theories and Social Justice Ideology―Implications for the Church and Society.' During the episode, Frank, Neil, and Pat answer questions like: How do proponents of critical theory view morality? What is the distinction between "Social Justice" and biblical justice? Is Oprah Winfrey oppressed? What are some of critical theory's popular slogans? Is CRT compatible with biblical Christianity? What are the "4 Big Ideas" at the heart of critical theory? The Gospel should motivate Christians to pursue generosity, holiness, and biblical justice. But we don't have to embrace the manifold errors of critical theory to do so. Be sure to pick up your copy of Critical Dilemma to learn more about how to identify critical theory in your church and how to stop it dead in its tracks if and when it shows up! This is part two of a lengthy conversation on Contemporary Critical guests Pat Sawyer and Neil Shenvi as they delve into the complexities of critical social theory and its impact on the church. Throughout the episode, our guests stress the importance of asking questions and engaging in dialogue, particularly within our churches. They encourage us not to assume the worst when pastors use terms like oppression or justice, but rather to invite them for meaningful conversations to better understand their perspectives. Furthermore, Sawyer and Shenvi draw attention to the racial divide in our country, discussing the ongoing effects of slavery and Jim Crow, and the need to acknowledge race without ignoring its existence. They emphasize the centrality of our identity in Christ over race or ethnicity, cautioning against colorblindness that dismisses other cultures or fails to address racism. They also touch on the challenges of engaging with contemporary critical theory as Christians, highlighting the potential pitfalls of prioritizing ethnic pride and identity over our identity in Christ. Sawyer and Shenvi shed light on the ways in which critical social theory can impact the church, directing our attention towards earthly emancipation and oppressive conditions. In this episode, we dive into the fascinating world of contemporary critical theory with the authors of the newly released book, Critical Dilemma, Neil Shenvi and Pat Sawyer. This is part one of a two-part conversation, which explores what the authors call Contemporary Critical Theory, which comprises an approximation of the most recent trends in thinking around critical theory, critical race theory, queer theory, and more. Shenvi and Sawyer believe it is highly important for Christians to be aware of what this ideology is doing to our society and culture. They shed light on the influence of queer theory, which challenges societal norms related to sexuality and gender. We discuss controversial topics such as the sexualization of children and the drag queen story hour, examining them through the lens of queer theory. Our guests provide an overview of the history, subdisciplines, and key concepts within critical theory. We also address misconceptions around the term "cultural Marxism" and the complex nature of Marxist ideas. The conversation takes us deeper into the impact of racism and oppression in American history, highlighting the ongoing relevance of these issues in society today. From peaceful protesting against systemic racism to the need for a comprehensive understanding of critical race theory, our guests share their perspectives on addressing social injustices. Finally, we explore critical social theory as a comprehensive worldview that shapes individuals' understanding of the world around them. We delve into the influence of critical theory on issues of justice, law, morality, and epistemology, discussing how it functions as more than just an academic theory, but a deeply felt belief system for some. Stay tuned for Part 2 of this enlightening discussion, where we dive further into engaging with contemporary critical theory as Christians. This episode is a must-listen for anyone seeking to gain a deeper understanding of this influential and complex field. On today's episode we talk with Dr Christina Shenvi who candidly helps us understand that we can't buy more time, but we can be wise about the time we are given. She comes with an incredible academic pedigree including Princeton, Berkeley, Yale, and UNC. She's a mom of 4, a practicing emergency physician, educator, keynote speaker, and leader. She's going to talk with us about how she gets everything done with tips for time management. Here are some highlights: Effort has three components: direction, intensity, and perseverance. Reflecting on if you are moving in the right direction and applying the right amount of intensity and persevering for only a given amount of time. How to approach a challenge: Priority: Spend time on the right things. (Can always make more money or invest money and earn interest. Can never make more time, yet we're often more careful with our money than with how we invest our time.) Get clear on personal priorities and big values. Make sure you're going the right direction. Strategy: Work in the right way. Architect your day/time. Deep work, shallow work, allocating time and deciding ahead of time what you will work on. Efficiency: Anything that requires little brainpower or that you do repeatedly, find ways to outsource, delegate, make efficient, or create shortcuts. Reflection: Activation barrier, and why managing time is all about managing emotions. Dr. Neil Shenvi is one of the leading critics of critical theory, speaking and writing about it for over seven years. During this time, we have seen the debate spread from the halls of academia to the dinner table. Today CRT and wokeism are widely understood, and the dividing lines between advocates and antagonists have been drawn--but the question looms, where do we go from here?In this episode, we focus our discussion around the question of, what now? How can we, as Christians, not just point out a false worldview, but offer a better one? What is the better worldview, and what will boldly applying it look like?Episode Landing PageDisciple Nations Alliance

Neil Shenvi (CFBU Academic Advisory Council member) joins Alisa Childers, along with Krista Bontrager, to discuss Christian Nationalism. They specifically address new developments in the conversation, and interact with the new book, “The Case For Christian Nationalism,” by Stephen Wolfe.
In today's episode, Doug Stuart chats with Neil Shenvi, a PhD in Theoretical Chemistry, about his work in Christian apologetics. If you think there's a disconnect between his education and his work, he explains a bit about that in the opening to the episode, as well as the basis for new found expertise in critical theory. Shenvi's concerns about the influence of critical theory rests in the influence (and resultant damage) to orthodox Christian doctrine by ideas developed by critical theorists. He offers a history of the philosophical discipline; many ways to discern the mechanics of it, how to think through and address the moving target certain nomenclature creates, and much more. If you know very little about the topic, or believe it's not as bad some say it is, this episode gives a great bird's eye view making connections you might not have previous thought to consider. Shenvi has a very gracious demeanor and way about speaking on this topic; he's sensitive to certain topics of valid concern (racism, abuse, etc), while recognizing the necessary distinctions and why this particular ideology is such a poison. Shenvi is apolitical in his approach. He comes at this with no agenda about politics or political theory. Today we're joined by Dr. Neil Shenvi, chemist, author, and Christian apologist, to discuss his book "Why Believe: A Reasoned Approach to Christianity" and to talk all things apologetics. Dr. Shenvi came to Christ while working for his Ph.D. in theoretical chemistry at UC Berkeley after a campus ministry worker handed him Christian literature. We talk about how important it is for Christians to display Christ in their lives in these ways. Then, we scratch the surface on some answers to a few difficult, age-old theological questions. We discuss the false statement that “we're not that bad," and Dr. Shenvi explains why the gospel itself is the strongest evidence for why Christianity is actually true. --- Today's Sponsors: Annie's Kit Clubs — all subscriptions are month-to-month, and you can cancel anytime! Although Neil has a PhD in theoretical chemistry, he's made a name for himself as an expert on Critical Race Theory (and Critical Theory more generally). Is CRT just a legal theory? Can anyone know what it really is? Is CRT just a plot by conservatives to gin up votes? Should Christians take CRT and chew the meat and spit out of the bones? Kevin and Neil answer these questions and many more. They also dive into Neil's new book on apologetics and explore the wild world of evangelical Twitter. Why believe in Christianity? Why believe that God exists? Aren't there reasons NOT to believe in God? Reasons like: Evolution Evil Divine hiddenness For centuries, skeptics have disputed the claims of Christianity―such as the belief in an eternal God and the resurrection of Jesus Christ―arguing that they simply cannot be accepted by reasonable individuals. Furthermore, efforts to demonstrate the evidence and rational basis for Christianity through apologetics are often deemed too simplistic to be taken seriously in intellectual circles. And miracles? Ha! They'll say anything is more probable than a miracle, even the idea that Jesus had an identical twin! In his new book, Why Believe: A Reasoned Approach to Christianity, apologist and theoretical chemist turned homeschool dad, Dr. Neil Shenvi, engages in some of the best contemporary arguments against Christianity. He presents compelling evidence for the identity of Jesus as portrayed in the Gospels, his death and resurrection, the existence of God, and the unique message of the gospel. As you'll discover in this podcast episode, Neil is no “uneducated Christian” and responds to some of the most common objections to Christianity with precision, clarity, and grace. Neil also talks with Frank about his college days at UC Berkeley and Princeton, where he came to faith during a class nicknamed “The Faith Buster,” taught using Bart Ehrman's textbook and other liberal religious scholarship.
