We live in an era dominated by subjective morality and individualized spirituality. How do we provide biblical, God-honoring responses? Stephanie sits down with Christian apologist and popular YouTuber Melissa Dougherty, who utilizes theological insights alongside her deeply personal experiences to dismantle the seductive façade of the New Thought movement. She describes this philosophy as “a stealthy message of encouragement to live your truth, seek happiness, find your identity through sexual freedom, and think your desires into existence. Often with the name of Jesus attached as an endorsement.” GIWEAWAY COMING UP! In our February newsletter, we will give away THREE copies of "Happy Lies" in partnership with Melissa and her publisher, Zondervan. We will also give 3 copies of our next January book interview (airing January 28, episode 376). So make sure to be signed up to our newsletter for a chance to win. Sign up here: https://www.gospelspice.com/signup In her groundbreaking debut, Happy Lies: How a Movement You (Probably) Never Heard Of Shaped Our Self-Obsessed World, Melissa Dougherty, an ex-New Thought follower herself, deconstructs the myths propagated by secular self-empowerment and affirmation movements. She explains how New Thought concepts like toxic affirmation and the “Law of Attraction” intersect with the prosperity gospel. She highlights how New Thought influences are subtly embedded in progressive Christianity and the gender identity crisis, and even how this movement is foundational to the weakened theology used in “Seeker-friendly” churches. Dougherty urges her audience to reflect deeply on these beliefs, encouraging them to discern contemporary culture's pervasive lies and to seek a more authentic understanding of the gospel. With clarity and a touch of compassionate snark, Melissa examines New Thought's appealing yet distorted spirituality. She warns of its pervasive impact on modern theology, emphasizing how the movement's focus on self-authority and personal experience often overshadows the biblical narrative. New Thought ideology subtly infiltrates contemporary Christian thought, presenting a false gospel that masquerades as a more open-minded, tolerant, and loving interpretation of Jesus and the Bible. Melissa recounts her epiphany during a hiatus from seminary, where her extensive readings unveiled a distinction between "New Thought" and "New Age." Despite their overlaps, these movements stand alone in intent and belief structures. Her desire to educate and spark dialogue about New Thought arose from the absence of evangelical discourse on the topic, with only a handful of scholars like Craig Hazen touching on it. Determined to spotlight this under-discussed issue, she writes a book laden with historical contexts, practical definitions, and a respectful yet critical analysis of New Thought within a Christian framework. Melissa describes New Thought as a metaphysical reinterpretation of Christianity, where the Scriptures are sometimes twisted into allegorical tales akin to self-help doctrines. Melissa coined the term "metamistagorical," combining metaphysical, mystical, and allegorical elements, to describe New Thought. She reflects on how figures like Oprah Winfrey and Joel Osteen intermingle Christian identification with mystical attributes to create a semblance of spiritual alignment. Melissa stresses that while New Thought is frequently confused with New Age philosophies, it poses a unique threat to believers: “New Thought ideas will deceive Christians before New Age ideas ever will. […] You've probably adopted some of its teachings, and you don't even realize it.” Unlike New Age's openly mystical practices, New Thought often acts as a metaphysical Christianity, making its influence sneakier and more deceptive. Dougherty concludes with a heartfelt prayer for her readers: “I hope you can't unsee [New Thought]. I hope it stirs something within you, something refusing to be ignored. Now, go tell others. Tell them the Joyful Truth so they don't fall for Happy Lies. ” In Happy Lies, highly regarded Christian apologist and ex-New Ager Melissa Dougherty . . . Tackles the frustrations surrounding the rise of pop spirituality and “self-actualization,” even within Christianity Exposes the deceptions of New Thought—a movement centered on positive thinking, mental healing, self-worship, and spiritual empowerment Counters subjective, “me”-focused platitudes with objective truths that dispel spiritual confusion and bring peace to anxious minds Provides practical methods to uproot the subtle, mystical, and insidious spiritual beliefs that dilute the core message of Christianity Clarifies how to recognize the misleading spiritual practices infiltrating modern Christianity and reject them to embrace the beauty of an authentic Christian life MORE ABOUT “HAPPY LIES” In this groundbreaking book, popular apologist Melissa Dougherty helps us understand how our society got to be so toxically subjective, why endless positivity is inherently destructive, and how we can live with faithful truth and genuine love in these self-obsessed times. Have you ever wondered how we ended up in a world where personal feelings could become the authority for reality? Or why so many of us are on a relentless pursuit for happiness yet somehow feel more exhausted and sadder than ever? You're not alone. Melissa deftly traces the roots of today's social chaos back to a little-known (but very influential) 1800s philosophy known as New Thought. A former follower of its teachings, Melissa provides clarity and compassion mixed with a dash of loving snark as she exposes New Thought's deceptions and its many concerning tendrils within the church and our "self-help" culture. You'll be shocked, grieved, and encouraged as you learn: How you can experience true freedom, hope, and peace instead of the world's counterfeits How an anti-God ideology so easily hijacked Christian-sounding ideas Why thinking positively is entirely different from the unbiblical and burdensome "positive thought" movement Why fake "authenticity" short-circuits real redemption How understanding the New Thought mindset can help us share our faith more effectively Uncover a dangerous ideology that nearly everyone has met, yet few of us can name, in order to better understand our culture and joyfully live faithful to the gospel that is so much better than our world's Happy Lies. MEET MELISSA DOUGHERTY Melissa Dougherty is a Christian apologist best known for her YouTube channel with over 285,000 subscribers and counting. As we engage in all of the Christmas festivities over the next several days, we must take the time to reflect on and celebrate the true reason for the season, Jesus! Yet, although many may know and remember the words of John 3:16 which says, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life,” many struggle to understand the why behind their belief and how they might share it with others. That is why on this Christmas Eve we are bringing on one of the foremost leading Christian apologists in the world to help educate, equip, and encourage to not only understand the WHY behind our faith, but also help us understand how we can more effectively witness and share the truth of God’s love with others, Dr. Sean McDowell. Sean is a gifted communicator with a passion for equipping the church, and in particular young people, to make the case for the Christian faith. He connects with audiences in a tangible way through humor and stories while imparting hard evidence and logical support for viewing all areas of life through a Biblical worldview. Sean is an Associate Professor in the Christian Apologetics program at Talbot School of Theology, Biola University. Additionally, he is the author, co-author, or editor of over twenty books and is listed among the top 100 apologists in the world! 1 Peter 3:15 says, “Always be ready to give an explanation to anyone who asks you for a reason for your hope.” Our prayer is that this conversation would equip you with that explanation today and forevermore. He is also the co-author of a new book with Alisa Childers called The Deconstruction of Christianity: What it is, Why it's Destructive, and How to Respond. In this interview, we discuss how he became a Christian Apologist, how we got roped into co-writing a book with Alisa, the most nefarious part of the deconstructionist movement, how deconstruction has no tangible end goal other than complete apostasy, how we shouldn't just fight against deconstruction using politics and culture, why Christians allow their politics to be upstream from their doctrine, why most churches and Christians are ill-equipped to push back against deconstruction, how to refute the claims of “toxic theology”, what we should do if someone we know and love begins to deconstruct their Christian faith, and much more. Jesus exhorted us to love God with all our minds (Matthew 22:37-39). The project of explaining, commending, and defending the Christian worldview is not limited to experts. Rather, it is the call of every Christian as a Christian (1 Peter 3:15-16). Arguing that Christianity is objectively true, compellingly rational, and existentially engaging over the whole of life is essential to Christian witness. Our salt and light must not be hidden under a basket (Matthew 5:13-16). Every Christian is a witness to God's saving truth. But, what kind of witness? Do we demonstrate the reality of the Gospel in word and deed? Is our life an apologetic for the Faith? Some excel at apologetics and others do not, but all are called to be the best apologists they can be through the empowering of the Holy Spirit, who is the Spirit of Truth (John 14:17; 15:13; 16:23; 1 John 4:6, 5:6; Acts 1:8). Two of the main challenges to the Christian faith today come from science and from textual criticism. Does the science of the universe disprove God's existence and have textual critics of Scripture once and for all demonstrated that the Bible is historically unreliable? If we aren't scholars in this area, how can we even begin to engage these objections, especially when many seem so antagonistically opposed to the Bible today? The key is asking the right questions, which our guest again this week, author, apologist, and founder of Stand to Reason ministries Greg Koukl, has a wealth of experience in doing. Greg shares with us some of the wisdom he has gleaned from Jesus's agrarian parables to encourage you in your engagement with non-believers. Greg Koukl founded Stand to Reason (str.org) in 1993 and currently serves as president. He has spoken on more than 70 college and university campuses both in the U.S. and abroad and has hosted his own call-in radio show for 27 years, advocating for “Christianity worth thinking about.” He has debated atheist Michael Shermer on national radio and Deepak Chopra on national television. An award-winning writer and best-selling author, Greg has written seven books, including CThe Story of Reality-How the World Began, How It Ends, and Everything Important that Happens in Between; Tactics-A GamePlan for Discussing Your Christian Convictions, and Relativism: Feet Firmly Planted in Mid-Air. It seems to be more and more difficult in today's divisive culture wars to have civil and meaningful conversations with non-Christians. While we certainly do not wish to change the message of the Gospel, it is important to understand what are the sort of fruitful approaches to sharing our faith that can help at least begin such conversations. Evangelism is not what it used to be. On the next two episodes of the Profile we talk with author, apologist, and founder of Stand to Reason ministries Greg Koukl about his latest book, Street Smarts. I. Meta-Apologetics A. Apologetics: Defending the Christian worldview as objectively true, compellingly rational, and existentially pertinent to the whole of life (1 Peter 3:15-6; Jude 3) B. Meta-apologetics: thoughts about how to engage in apologetics, strategies and values. II. The Christian Apologist's Moral Compass A. All are called to check their moral motives and develop godly characterI strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize (2 Corinthians 9:27).Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers (1 Timothy 4:16).B. Yearn for Kingdom ministry (Matthew 6:33) C. Put yourself second to the ministry; do not promote your brand or ego! Let others compliment you. III. Godly Character A. Humility, not self-promotionThis is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief (1 Timothy 1:5; KJV; see also 1 Corinthians 15:9). B. Show love, not strifeAnd the Lord's servant must not be quarrelsome but must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful. Opponents must be gently instructed, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth, and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will (2 Timothy 2:24-26).C. Dependence on the Spirit moment-by-moment (John 15; Acts 1:8). See Francis Schaeffer, True Spirituality. D. Intellectual preparation for apologetics 1. Know your Bible (Psalm 119; 2 Timothy 3:16) and biblical interpretation (2 Peter 3:16) 2. Know biblical and systematic theology to ground your worldview (Acts 17:10-11) 3. Know logic and logical fallacies; how to argue carefully and assess arguments carefully (2 Corinthians 10:3-5) 4. Know your own culture: worldviews and means of communication (technologies) Issachar, men who understood the times and knew what Israel should do (1 Chronicles 12:32). 5. Be above reproach in citing your sources in speaking and writing (Exodus 20:15) 6. Behind all these six principles is the importance of being studious, a good scholar Not only was the Teacher wise, but he also imparted knowledge to the people. He pondered and searched out and set in order many proverbs. The Teacher searched to find just the right words, and what he wrote was upright and true (Ecclesiastes 12:9-10; see 1:17; 8:9, 16).I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, I too decided to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught (Luke 1:3-4; see also John 21:24). IV. Opportunity and Uncertainty in Apologetics A. Break new ground! It has always been my ambition to preach the gospel where Christ was not known, so that I would not be building on someone else's foundation—Romans 15:20). B. Ecclesiastes 11:1-6 Cast your bread upon the waters,For you will find it after many days.Give a serving to seven, and also to eight,For you do not know what evil will be on the earth. If the clouds are full of rain,They empty themselves upon the earth; And if a tree falls to the south or the north,In the place where the tree falls, there it shall lie.He who observes the wind will not sow,And he who regards the clouds will not reap.As you do not know what is the way of the wind,[a]Or how the bones grow in the womb of her who is with child,So you do not know the works of God who makes everything. In the morning sow your seed,And in the evening do not withhold your hand; For you do not know which will prosper,Either this or that,Or whether both alike will be good (NKJV). C. Calculate effort in relation to effect and chances of success. D. Embrace unexpected opportunities. 1. Paul at Mars Hill (Acts 16-17): unscheduled mission trip before imposing intellectuals. 2. Paul to Timothy Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine—2 Timothy 4:2 (KJV). V. My Apologetic Surprises, Successes, and Failures A. Surprise: Lecturing at a Baha'i meeting B. Successful attempts 1. Writing On Pascal and On Jesus 2. Doing author events for two of my books at a local bookstore in Denver. Another one flopped (Fire in the Streets). C. Unsuccessful attempts 1. Debate with James K. A. Smith 2. Doing a Buddhist-Christian dialogue at Naropa University (Boulder, CO) 3. Secular publisher for Philosophy in Seven Sentences VI. Attempts, Failures, and Successes before God A. Seek God's Kingdom first, last, and always (Matthew 6:33) B. Remember the audience of a holy God Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter:Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind. For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil—Ecclesiastes 12:13-14.Resources1. In todays episode, Evan Minton talks about the case for the historical reliability of the book of Acts with Christian Apologist and YouTuber Erik Manning. Who wrote the book of Acts? When was Acts written? What extra biblical writings and archeological evidence can verify what Acts says? Are there any clues within the book of Acts itself that suggest that the author knew what he was talking about? All of these questions and more are addressed in this episode. In today's episode, I have Nick Peters of Deeper Waters ministries on the podcast. Nick Peters is a Christian Apologist and theologian who has recently devoted his research to, believe it or not, video games! Specifically, video games and the psychology surrounding it as well as the theological aspects of it. In fact, he gave an entire talk at the Defend conference last year on this very subject. Why do people play video games? Why are so many adults interested in video games? Is there anything particularly wrong with adults playing video games? And what would happen if we took life as seriously as we took video games? These topics and more are discussed in this episode. Sometimes old college buddies turn out to be super smart and successful. Co-host Jared Haley has his old friend Dr. William (Bill) Roach on the Strong By Design podcast show to talk about talking about and defending the Christian faith. Unfortunately, many who claim to be Christians have trouble discussing their beliefs with others. Even well-read church goers and active church members will avoid non-believers and people questioning their faith. Bill shares with Jared what ‘Christian Apologetics' is, how to be bold and have meaningful conversations with others about Christianity and that it is OKAY to not have all the answers. They also discuss what it looks like when spiritual leaders fail publicly. “Sometimes, the best thing that can ever happen in a life of a person, is to have a good atheist, Mormon or Jehovah's Witness that can ask the right question and bring you to the point that you say ‘I don't know', and it forces you to go and read your bible more.” - Bill Roach Time Stamps 01:06 – Welcome to the ‘Strong by Design' podcast 1:44 - Get to know today's special guest, Dr. Bill Roach 6:50 - What is Christian Apologetics? 7:28 - Bill on what inspires him to be a Christian Apologist 09:01 - 'Always Be Prepared'- How Christian Apologists can defend the Faith 11:45 - Why it's okay to NOT know everything 17:41 - How has Christianity changed over time? 19:55 - Bill talks about how to be a great debater 23:51 - Understanding how atheists differ in the late 19th and 21st centuries 34:47 - Finding answers to your questions: Do you trust God? 38:04 - Bill on how should we respond when a spiritual leader falls to moral failure 48:40 - Ways to become a Christian Apologist 58:16 - Where you can go to get in touch with Dr. Bill Roach and learn more about the Bible, Theology, and Apologetics Resources Bill Roach – Official Website Connect w/ Bill: YouTube Facebook Connect w/ CriticalBench: Youtube Facebook Instagram CriticalBench.com StrongByDesignPodcast.com

In this episode, we welcome Alisa Childers back to the show. She is a former Contemporary Christian Music recording artist turned Christian Apologist. She's an outspoken opponent of “Progressive Christianity”, and she talks about that extensively in her book Another Gospel? A Lifelong Christian Seeks Truth in Response to Progressive Christianity. In this interview, we discuss her new book Live Your Truth (and Other Lies), why it's dangerous to try to live as our “authentic selves”, why God isn't mainly concerned with our happiness, how Christians got the idea that the Bible is somehow about them, the controversy surrounding Matt Chandler and Ravi Zacharias, why we shouldn't view Jesus as some super-tolerant hippie, how broad the term “church hurt” is, how we actually are NOT enough, and much more. On this Sunday episode of The Charlie Kirk Show, Christian Apologist and author Frank Turek is back by popular demand to discuss his new book, “Hollywood Heroes.” They have a fascinating discussion about the hidden religious themes behind some of our culture's greatest heroes—including Batman, Superman, Gandalf, Luke Skywalker, and Harry Potter. In the wake of another tragic shooting event, this time in Highland Park, Illinois—just miles from Charlie's hometown in the suburbs of Chicago—Charlie walks through everything we know publicly about the shooter and exposes the deeper implications behind some of the seemingly small details the mainstream media is actively glossing over. He goes into his past and unpacks the dangerous levels of marijuana use that have reportedly plagued the perpetrator for years as well as the compounding effects that decades of antidepressants and anti-anxiety medications seemingly had on his psyche and how it all could have contributed to the tragically end we saw on Monday. He's joined by Dr. Naomi Wolf, Author of the new book, 'The Bodies of Others,' to build out the ways substance-induced psychosis could have triggered such a violent tragedy and why we shouldn't expect this to be an isolated incident, given the societal damage COVID Lockdowns have had on the mental health of an entire, already-fragile, generation of American kids. And throughout the length of this episode, Charlie references the concepts of nihilism and subjectivism, all while tying everything together with quotes and commentary from 'The Abolition of Man,' — the seminal work of author and Christian Apologist, C.S. Lewis — laying out what we as a society can learn from Lewis' words, arguably more applicable today than when they were written nearly nine decades ago.
