Ep. 239 | Renowned gerontologist and author Dr. Kerry Burnight is passionate about changing the way we think about aging. Growing older isn't a bad thing, she emphasizes, let's look at what gets better as we get older! Early in Dr. Kerry's career, she marveled at how elderly people with the same degree of physical health could be absolutely miserable or happily engaged with life, and she dug into finding out why. Her research revealed four pillars of aging that together make all the difference in the quality of our well-being. Kerry urges us to adopt these practices as soon as we can, because just like with cardiovascular training, the earlier we start, the more benefit we accrue. In fact, the evidence is clear: research shows that people who have a “decline mindset” about aging die an average of seven years earlier than their counterparts with a “growth mindset.” It seems our beliefs about aging can easily become self-fulfilling prophecies.Finding joy in the second half of life involves not only cultivating connection and growth among other things, but also, very importantly, countering our own internalized ageism. Dr. Kerry gives some telling examples of common derogatory thoughts we have about ourselves as we age, and shows us how we can turn this around and step into our power as older people. In a moving testament to the special beauty and authenticity of the elderly, Kerry expresses gratitude for her opportunities as a gerontologist to be infused with the presence of her patients, in all their humility and greater appreciation of friendships, nature, music, art—of life itself. A poignant, lovely, illuminating, and inspiring conversation with someone who lives her talk and is making a meaningful difference in a culture that has lost its way in its approach to aging and caring for elders. Fed up with the fear-driven, anti-aging hysteria, millions of people turn to her for a proven approach to navigating the new longevity—one based upon a profound truth: the key to good longevity isn't the length of your life, it's the quality of your life. Efforts to maximize lifespan, and even healthspan, don't address the whole picture. Longevity is meaningless if you don't like your life. Send us Fan MailSeason 4: New Earth Episode:228- Awaken Heart The episode focuses on the birth of a "New Earth" and a global shift in consciousness from the rigid, fearful 3D matrix to a higher-frequency 5D reality. The central message is an invitation to shift power away from the analytical mind and into the "higher heart," using personal suffering and global upheaval not as punishments, but as divine redirection.Key TakeawaysThe Birth of New Earth: The old, corrupt landscape is inevitably breaking down. Humanity is currently in a state of "creative tension," straddling the gap between old and new realities.Reframing Struggle as Divine Guidance: Tiwari shares her personal journey of shifting from a "Warrior of Light" to a "Warrior of Suffering" by fighting obstacles. She realized that life's major roadblocks and "boulders" were not meant to crush her, but were divinely motivated tools designed to redirect her path and purge karmic and ancestral debris. The Power of the Heart: True healing and unity occur when people stop focusing on external differences and internalize the truth that they are "Love in infinite form." Listeners are encouraged to physically place a hand on their sternum (the higher heart) to seek guidance for their words and actions.Surrender and Trust: Evolution requires letting go of the need for immediate answers and instead trusting Prime Source / the Christos Light. True spiritual stability comes from knowing one can face any challenge with ease, confident that the Divine has their back.Cosmic Support: The transcript notes that humanity is not alone in this transition. Millions of light beings and galactic cosmic allies are actively assisting in unfastening Earth from its old architecture and cleansing its inequities.Note from the Host: Season 4 of the podcast is entirely dedicated to the awakening of the New Earth and the process of "great un-learning." We’re joined again this week by professor and meditation teacher Roger Walsh. This week we dive into his study of the common practices seen in all of the world’s wisdom traditions. He shares each of these practices, and then also explores with us the ancient tradition of Shamanism, which is estimated to be tens of thousands of years old. We explore how ancient Shamanism relates to the neo-shamanism and core shamanism practices being taught in the West today, how Shamanism might have been repressed during recent times, and also the difference between meditation, mental disorders, and shamanistic states. Roger wraps up the conversation by expressing how he sees Buddhism having a unique role in helping us face the unique challenges and opportunities of our day. In this stirring topic he emphasizes the need to harness relevant technological mediums, to understand the difference between Buddhism crossing cultures and crossing eras, and the crucial link between the extraordinary challenges in the world today and the states of mind that Buddhism helps to cultivate. This is part 2 of a two-part series. Listen to part 1, A Technology of Transcendence. Where does awareness tend to locate itself? And how is this important in our experience and understanding of the Buddhist path of awakening? This week Diane Musho Hamilton—Zen sensei and Big Mind lineage holder—joins us again to discuss the importance of what Ken Wilber calls the three faces of spirit. Using this powerful notion as a lens we explore questions about how and why lineage is passed down, the way that Buddhism adapts to new cultures and why it is particularly vulnerable to being destroyed, how cultural development impacts the tradition, issues surrounding the master-disciple relationship, and finally whether or not one can regulate the erotic impulse. This is part 2 of a two-part series. Listen to part 1: Discover Yourself as a Perspective-Taking Being.
