In 1552, a lexicographer gave us the word “noctivagation” which means walking around at night. The word itself was a legal term for Shakespeare's lifetime, used to describe someone that wandered around at night without any particular purpose. Vagrancy, on the whole, was frowned upon for Shakespeare's lifetime, but vagrancy at night was viewed with extreme suspicion. In fact, walking around at night illegitimately was so bad that in his play King Lear, Shakespeare implies that the poster boy for night walkers is Satan himself. This negative understanding of nightwalkers gets confusing though, when we consider Falstaff in Henry IV talks about walking from tavern to tavern at night with Bardolph, and mentions it as fun, certainly not anything they were worried about, and other period references from the 16th century talk about Link Boys, who were young boys paid to escort travelers as night while carrying a torch to light the way. What does this mean about travelling at night in a city like London? Were there legitimate reasons to be out after dark, and what options were available for creating artificial light prior to the advent of the light bulb? Here today to answer these questions and introduce us to the concept of night walkers, and night lights, for Shakespeare's lifetime is our guest, Matthew Beaumont. This is Superlative: A Podcast about watches, the people behind them, and the worlds that inspire them. This week our host and aBlogtoWatch Founder Ariel Adams is joined by esports commentator and watch enthusiast, James Bardolph. Ariel has James start the show by explaining the intricacies of esports and defining what it really is. James sets the stage for the size of the industry today, and how advertising and sponsors play a role. Ariel asks how watches play a part in the gaming industry, and how value is seen in the gaming world today with things like microtransactions and in-game items. They talk about how the watch industry can work together with the gaming industry, such as when G-Shock partnered with NASA and other partnerships as well. Chaos reigns on the battlefield of Agincourt, where Pistol encounters a French soldier and spares his life in exchange for his money, thanks to the assistance of the bilingual Boy who has trailed him from England. Fortune eventually turns against France, and Dauphin, Orleans, Bourbon and Constable mourn their fate. Henry learns of the death of the Duke of York, who led the vanguard against the French army, as Fluellen and Gower lament the slaughter of the children who were left to guard their luggage, including the Boy who had accompanied Pistol. Henry is enraged by their senseless deaths, vowing to finish the fight without mercy. Finally, Montjoy arrives to give word of France's surrender. As he celebrates with Fluellen, Henry spots Williams, the soldier he'd quarreled with while visiting his troops incognito the night before. Henry summons Williams and reveals himself as the adversary he vowed to fight. Williams is contrite, but Henry rewards his pluck and valor with a glove full of coins. At last, the tally of the dead is brought to the King, and together he and his nobles marvel at their lopsided victory. Outside the French village of Corbie, Gower and Fluellen meet a fiery Pistol, who asks Fluellen to beg leniency from Exeter on behalf of Bardolph, who has been sentenced to death for stealing from a church. Fluellen refuses and Pistol storms off, enraged. King Henry arrives to learn that the English have kept control of a strategically valuable bridge. He also learns of the death of his old friend Bardolph, and promises that all such offenders will get the same punishment. Soon after, a French Ambassador, Montjoy, arrives to deliver a warning to King Henry from the King of France: Turn back now or die. Henry responds that he will march on, and if they try to stop him, he'll soak the ground with French blood. Later that night, in the French camp outside Agincourt, Constable, Bourbon and Orleans tease the Dauphin about his love for his horse, and joke about him after he leaves. A messenger arrives to tell them the English are lurking very near their tents, but they shrug off the threat, confident of their strength and numbers. Only Bourbon expresses any sense of foreboding. The Chorus describes Henry visiting his soldiers at their tents and lookouts, boosting their morale. Later, as he sits with his thoughts, feeling optimistic about what lies ahead, Henry is surprised by the sudden appearance of Pistol. King Henry's friends from his wilder days, Bardolph, Nym and Pistol, gather at the London Boarding House of Pistol's new bride, Nell, who had been engaged to Nym. Pistol and Nym argue and fight until they are interrupted by a young Boy who breaks the news that their great friend, Sir John Falstaff, is gravely ill and needs their help. In Southampton, Henry discovers that three of his closest friends and advisors, Lord Scroop of Masham, Richard Earl of Cambridge and Thomas Grey, Knight of Northumberland, have committed treason by conspiring against him with the King of France. He has them executed at once. Back at Nell's Boarding House, the Hostess (Nell), Pistol, Bardolph, Nym and the Boy mourn the death of Falstaff, then depart to join King Henry's army. King Charles the Beloved of France, meanwhile, sensing that Henry is not to be trifled with, expresses his unease over England's imminent invasion. As his court nonchalantly watches a jousting tournament, the King of France berates his son, the Dauphin, for underestimating the power of England, and instructs his princes to arm themselves in preparation for war. Few people have been in esports since close to the beginning. James Bardolph, a professional 'Counter-Strike: Global Offensive' and 'Apex Legends' commentator, is one of them. He joins Visionaries to discuss the financial woes of the competitive game industry and not when, but if, it will recover in a post-COVID world. "We're in a transitional period, that much is clear. We still have serious problems out there. It's hurt, but maybe next year we can measure the damage COVID's done. That's not just true for esports, but for everything." Show Notes: @jamesbardolph 1:24: How James got his start in esports. 10:14: When it became clear esports would take off commercially. 14:38: How investments from Rick Fox, Sacramento Kings owners and others made esports mature. 20:42: ELEAGUE and Turner's impact on 'Counter-Strike' tournaments and broadcasts 26:37: Did esports get ahead of itself with salaries and spending? 34:34: Is esports in a downturn? 40:23: The pandemic excitement around esports. 46:28: Esports' need to change how it tells stories. 53:00: Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund's acquisition of FACEIT and ESL. 57:50: Where can esports fashion improve? In William Shakespeare's play, Merry Wives of Windsor, Bardolph declares “You Banbury Cheese!” as an insult. The reason this line is an insult is because for the life of William Shakespeare, Banbury England was famous for making a particular kind of cheese that was thinner on the rind than other cheese typical of the period. Therefore, calling someone a Banbury cheese was akin to calling them a string-bean, or saying they were too thin. It works especially well as a joke for Shakespeare in the play because the character Bardolph is insulting is named, as you might expect, Slender. The joke is a highly contemporary reference by Shakespeare and in order to better understand the history of Banbury England and their famous cheese, we have invited the chair of the Banbury Historical Society, Helen Forde, to visit with us today and explain what made Banbury cheese so unique for Shakespeare's lifetime.

We work our way through the end of Act III of Henry V - this episode covers scenes 4-7. We puzzle over the singular scene almost entirely in French, how it amplifies the conflict of communication, and as a continuation of the consequences of war, we question if Shakespeare brings the Frenchmen onstage so they can make fun of themselves, or perhaps praise their wine? We take a moment to mourn Bardolph, talk about Fluellen’s knowledge of the ‘ancient wars,’ imagine the Dauphin in the camp as the rich kid at home without his parents for the first time, and, rather alarmed at the implied relationships of the soldiers and horses…we are left with the question: how many fools does it take to replace Falstaff? Our ensemble for Henry V includes Nazlah Black, Esther Boles, Zoe Burke, Andrew Codispoti, Xdzunúm Danae, Zoë Goslin, Isabel Karp, Colin Kohrs, Alexander Lane, Julia Larsen, Amy Meilander, Jesse Van Buren, facilitated and directed by Ariana Karp.
CAST in order of appearance: Jesse Van Buren as Bardolph, Alexander Lane as Nym & Captain Jamy, Zoë Goslin as Pistol, Xdzunúm Danae as Pageboy, Julia Larsen as Captain Fluellen, Zoe Burke as Captain Gower, Isabel Karp as Captain MacMorris. Facilitated, edited, and with music composed and performed by Ariana Karp.
