They detail the events of the murder and claim that with Gregson and Lestrade on the tail, the culprit will be caught in no time. After breakfast, several street urchins run into the flat and it is revealed that Holmes uses these kids to get information that people wouldn't give to people in uniform. Gregson then arrives, feeling that he has solved the case and wrapped it in a nice little bow. He tells Holmes and Watson all that has happened since they last saw each other. He claims that Arthur Charpentier, son of the Boardinghouse owner, Mrs Charpentier is the culprit, and is waiting at the police station following his arrest. Holmes then asks Gregson to recount how he came to the conclusion that Charpentier is the culprit. Holmes is pleased with Gregson's surmises, but still remains a little smug. Detective Lestrade soon after arrives and informs everyone that the secretary, Mr Stangerson, has been murdered.
We've gone CAT crazy this month on the podcast. They say cats have 9 lives. Our guest Suna Kneisley is probably on life #5. Her story starts in Korea where she was born. She was raised in a small town in the Midwest where she was the only Asian kid in town. At 12 years old, she helped run her family's 24-hour donut shop. In her 20's, Suna lands in Silicon Valley as a marketing exec at Intuit and Oracle. Eventually, she launched her own real estate investment company. And this is when things get even more interesting. She sees an opportunity and pounces on the Cat business, running a non-profit and buying a successful boutique Cat Hotel as a third, maybe 4th act. It's a super fun story full of lots of twist and turns. Suna is full of optimism and has some great (un)retirement advice for you! • More about Suna Kneisley: https://patsplaceforcats.com/about/meet-the-owners • Pat's Boarding House for Cats: https://patsplaceforcats.com • Episode Content: https://pickleballmediahq.com/blog/Suna-Kneisley-Interview-Kitty-Hotel-Second-Act-Success-Story • Sponsored by Capital Advantage: https://capitaladvantage.com/promotion/retirement-planning-guide • Sponsored by How to Retire and Not Die: https://garysirak.com/how-to-retire-and-not-die • I Used to be Somebody World Tour: https://pickleballmediahq.com/tour/all-tours • Subscribe to the "I Used to be Somebody" newsletter: https://pickleballmediahq.com/contact/subscribe

Wir schreiben Sonntag, den 21. Juni 1931. A report from Auckland Council's boarding house inspectors shows out of 44 properties suspected to be breaking the law, 40 were “operating unauthorised transient accommodation or boarding houses.” Many had issues with fire safety breaches, growing numbers of gang-affiliated guests, and owners questioning council authority. Andrew Dickens had two callers today who discussed their situations. The first, Jamie, lives in a boarding house with his son. Jamie told Andrew Dickens “There's one room here that's $500 – the guy's killing it,” Jamie said “You're living with alcoholics and drug users. I've had to send my kid to his mum's because it's no place for a kid.” The second, John, owns two boarding houses and lives there himself. John told Andrew Dickens “When they come here, they are lost. When I give them a room, they sleep for a week - they are that exhausted.” John said “It's an ideal situation to get these people off the street and give them independence.” LISTEN ABOVE.

Surprise! The Third Men Podcast is back from the mind shaft, connected by brotherly love (ew) and ready with an all-new episode that will take you for a stroll down memory lane. Specifically, whatever memory lane Ezmerelda is on. This is an installment of the show that we're calling BOARDING HOUSE REVISITED, wherein your humble co-hosts will take a look back at Jack White's divisive, genre-bending, and quintessentially WEIRD third solo album Boarding House Reach. In 2018, we here at the Third Men Podcast were so excited to have a new record from Jack White, that in retrospect our reactions to that record were perhaps somewhat colored by the environment around us. Well, we're here to give this whacky record a fresh listen, featuring live commentary for your ears only ...and with a surprising amount of clarity given the time that has passed since its release. So join us, won't you? We're happy to be back -- even if we are, indeed, totally absurd. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
To the outside world, Dorothea Puente presented herself as a kind grandmotherly figure who cared for the disabled and vulnerable residents of her boarding house in downtown Sacramento. But behind closed doors, nothing was as it seemed… Not only was she stealing the money of her tenant, but she was also a serial killer. Allegedly murdering up to nine people. In today's episode, we explore the crimes of the ‘Death House landlady' who even after she was convicted managed to win over people with her sweet, grandmotherly ruse. In Boardinghouse Women: How Southern Keepers, Cooks, Nurses, Widows, and Runaways Shaped Modern America (UNC Press, 2023), Elizabeth Engelhardt argues that modern American food, business, caretaking, politics, sex, travel, writing, and restaurants all owe a debt to boardinghouse women in the South. From the eighteenth century well into the twentieth, entrepreneurial women ran boardinghouses throughout the South; some also carried the institution to far-flung places like California, New York, and London. Owned and operated by Black, Jewish, Native American, and white women, rich and poor, immigrant and native-born, these lodgings were often hubs of business innovation and engines of financial independence for their owners. Within their walls, boardinghouse residents and owners developed the region's earliest printed cookbooks, created space for making music and writing literary works, formed ad hoc communities of support, tested boundaries of race and sexuality, and more. Engelhardt draws on a vast archive to recover boardinghouse women's stories, revealing what happened in the kitchens, bedrooms, hallways, back stairs, and front porches as well as behind closed doors—legacies still with us today. “This is a moment of grace in our lives. People have come to visit us and we're going to share these people and these stories and whatever this time brings. Then they'd get up, say their goodbyes and my grandparents would go back to work. But at Seminary Hill what I wanted to do was make that sense of leisure and openness available to guests, whether they're coming to Seminary Hill to drink cider or to have a meal or to see friends.” We're in great company with Susan Manning and Doug Doetsch, owners of Seminary Hill in the foothills of the Catskill Mountains in New York. Here they have created, curated and stewarded a boutique hotel, restaurant and private event space to coincide with their proudly local and intently sustainable, orchard and cidery - inviting parched guests and passersby alike to experience the agricultural heritage of their land. With five generations of family members tending to this land and hosting travelers passing through, Doug and Susan returned to commemorate and reinvigorate this sense of place - but with a creative and collaborative twist. Recruiting community members and instilling regenerative practices to create the World's First Passive House-Certified Cidery for all to savor - whether during a stay or simply passing through. In this episode, Susan and Doug give us a sweet taste of why Condé Nast Traveler has coined Seminary Hill as “James Fenimore Cooper's America with a dash of Tuscany.” Top Takeaways [1:50] Back in the mid 1800s apple orchards were not planted for city folk to go apple picking or for that perfect Thanksgiving apple pie. They were for making cider…the cheapest form of alcohol and a drink safer than water. [10:25] While Susan and Doug pursued careers in Chicago, they were called home to the Catskills to steward their family's land as it was in a “pre consumer culture” and yet to gentrify the town, curating a community of creatives with innovative ideas. [13:10] Hospitality at Seminary Hill is a simple, timeless and selfless act of inviting passersby to sit on a porch in a rocking chair, having a conversation with a cold drink in hand. [16:15] Seminary Hill is the world's first “Passive House-Certified Cidery.” What makes it “Passive House” you ask? [23:10] Stay in good company at the Boarding House on the National Registry of Historic Places and dine in good company at the Tasting Room overlooking the Seminary Hill orchard, savoring the smells, sights, and sounds of 60 varieties of apple trees and their entire holistic ecosystem. [45:00] Over the years, planting trees and putting them to bed has become a sort of “barn raising” tradition for the family and friends of Seminary Hill. With Snurfing being invented just 40 miles from his childhood home in the Midwest and having access to an abandoned ski hill down the road from his house its not surprising Chris Engelsman known as E-Tree in snowboarding circles fell in love with snowboarding and would feel the pull of the west coast as he became of age to make his own moves. It started with trying to find a good collage but of course a good collage that is in a ski town and this leads you to Colorado. It's a path that is laid out for so many shredders that grow up east of what Chris calls the east coast of the west, Colorado. Chris hit up that collage and showed up with the best intentions but of course it did not take long for him to realize where his true path lead. It lead right to a 11 year career as a pro rider with trick inventions, amazing video parts as well as pro model gear and very importantly he changed the lives of any snowboard that stands 6 feet or taller, as a pro standing some inches over 6 feet he was always walking around with high water pants and a jacket that would pull up to his nipples every time he went to spin. He put together new cuts made to fit the tall snowboarder and the rest is history. So anyone over 6 feet hit him up and say thanks!!! After his pro career Chris went on to become the publisher of snowboarder magazine helping to put out some of the fat issues that we all hear about back when print media was king. Today Chris rides more than most people thanks to his proximity to the resorts in Utah as well as the desire to snowboard for life. E-Tree is a lifer and we are stoked to have him in the community. Are you a fan of movies like Boardinghouse, Blood Cult, and Redneck Zombies? Do you also love the shit out of podcasts? Well, great news for you and probably only you: we have launched a podcast dedicated to SOV (shot-on-video) horror movies titled Decayed Tapes, which will have a home right here on the GHOULISH Podcast Network. Join our hosts, Max Booth III and Miguel Myers, as we explore the under-appreciated world of shot-on-video horror sleaze created by low-budget filmmakers and sometimes genuine psychopaths. Our first episode went live earlier this week: a 2+ hour long conversation about… Video Violence! Please consider subscribing to the show via your favorite podcast app and rating/reviewing on iTunes. If it's not already on your preferred app, please give it another day or two to properly generate, then check again. Sometimes brand-new podcasts can take a minute to show up everywhere. On the debut episode of Decayed Tapes, we watched Gary P. Cohen's masterful VIDEO VIOLENCE from 1987—a movie about an entire town helplessly addicted to snuff films. Join us for a fun, bizarre conversation about filmmaking, video stores, salisbury steak, and defecating ourselves in public.
Boardinghouse brings the blood and boobs as this half-giallo half-experimental cocaine party gives us near non-stop insanity. But is it too much? Find out if the purported first ever SOV (shot on video) horror film is worth its weight in salt…or drugs... Join us as Adam, Joey, JD and Apocalypse learn telekinesis powers for tubby time in this 1980s horror gem. This isn't the first time America has had a housing crisis. A recent encounter with a homeless camp brought back a story about my great-grandmother. Twice widowed, she solved a problem for herself and for others. Maybe it's time to let stories from the hard times of the past inspire how we address problems today.
In 1931, a nosy old veteran of the Spanish-American war, a young man with a lot of secrets, and a woman with ambitions of book-selling grandeur gather to unwittingly fight against dark forces coalescing in Ma Shanks' Boarding House in Providence, RI. Dorothea Puente may have looked every bit the placid old lady she played. In reality, she was in her early fifties, and was using her self-made status as a ‘pillar of the community' to divert attention away from what was buried and rotting in her garden. Whether her victims had a few hundred thousand dollars, a nice pick-up truck, or even just a meagre social security cheque – they all risked the wrath of the ‘Death House Landlady'. Rocky Fortune is an American radio drama that aired weekly on NBC Radio beginning in October 1953. The series ended its run in March 1954 after 25 episodes. George Lefferts created the program. Frank Sinatra voiced the title role of Rocky Fortune for the entire series. Rocky Fortune aired Tuesday nights on NBC at 9:35 pm Eastern, immediately following Dragnet (and a five-minute John Cameron Swayze newscast). It was a sustaining series, meaning that NBC presented the program without corporate sponsorship. The premiere episode, "Oyster Shucker", originally aired on October 6, 1953. Penelope Lively, Helen Hull, boarding houses and isolation – welcome to episode 109! In the first half of this episode, Rachel and I compare boarding houses novels and novels where people live alone – up to and including complete isolation.
King Henry's friends from his wilder days, Bardolph, Nym and Pistol, gather at the London Boarding House of Pistol's new bride, Nell, who had been engaged to Nym. Pistol and Nym argue and fight until they are interrupted by a young Boy who breaks the news that their great friend, Sir John Falstaff, is gravely ill and needs their help. In Southampton, Henry discovers that three of his closest friends and advisors, Lord Scroop of Masham, Richard Earl of Cambridge and Thomas Grey, Knight of Northumberland, have committed treason by conspiring against him with the King of France. He has them executed at once. Back at Nell's Boarding House, the Hostess (Nell), Pistol, Bardolph, Nym and the Boy mourn the death of Falstaff, then depart to join King Henry's army. King Charles the Beloved of France, meanwhile, sensing that Henry is not to be trifled with, expresses his unease over England's imminent invasion. As his court nonchalantly watches a jousting tournament, the King of France berates his son, the Dauphin, for underestimating the power of England, and instructs his princes to arm themselves in preparation for war. In 1988, social workers in Sacramento, CA went to police asking for help finding one of their clients - a man named Bert Montoya. It was unlike Bert not to be in touch with them, and after receiving an odd phone call they were worried something was wrong. Investigators went to the old Victorian boardinghouse where Bert was living to dig up some information, and it was there they uncovered secrets of a violent past that had been buried for years.
