Welcome to Church Pew Sports Ep 180 - Brotherhood, Baseball & Saying Goodbye: Faith and Sports in Life's Toughest Moments After a short break, Church Pew Sports returns with a powerful blend of sports talk and soul-level reflections. Hosted by Bill Hobson alongside co-hosts Pastor Paul Miller, Scott Holmgren, and David Collins, this episode begins with a spirited dive into the Detroit Tigers' surprising rise, the evolving landscape of Major League Baseball, and how the NCAA's historic settlement is reshaping college sports as we know it. The guys take on hot topics with their usual insight and humor—from the puzzling economics of baseball contracts (will Chris Ilitch pay Tarek Skubal what he's worth?) to the quirks of umpiring in an era of automated calls and helmet taps. They also unpack how the MLB app, shifting sports commentary trends, and changes in TV contracts are affecting fan engagement. But what sets this episode apart isn't just the sports commentary—it's the deeply personal turn the conversation takes near the end. In the final segment, Pastor Paul Miller shares an emotional update on the recent loss of his 94-year-old father, a moment that brings the meaning of Church Pew Sports into sharp focus. His honest reflections on caregiving, grief, and what it means to be supported by a “band of brothers” will resonate with every listener who has navigated loss or leaned on friends through tough times. This segment powerfully reminds us that while sports are fun and important, they also serve as the backdrop for deeper connections—between fathers and sons, between friends, and within the podcasting community itself. Paul's words are a tribute not only to his father but to the strength found in friendship, faith, and brotherhood. In true Church Pew fashion, the episode ends with encouragement for men everywhere: stay connected. In a world that often isolates, this podcast is a living example of what happens when men show up for each other—on and off the mic. Whether you came for the baseball or stayed for the brotherhood, this episode delivers on every level. --------- Did you know you can now WATCH Church Pew Sports on our new YOUTUBE Channel? Send us a textIn this episode of Art Wank, we delve into the world of Australian landscape painter David Collins, whose latest solo exhibition, Brevity, is currently on view at Defiance Gallery in Sydney from May 3 to 24, 2025 .Collins has been a significant figure in the Australian art scene since the early 1990s . Residing on Dangar Island in the Hawkesbury River since 1987, his daily interactions with the river—often by rowboat—deeply inform his artistic practice . His works are known for their meditative quality, blending abstraction with a profound sense of place.Brevity continues this exploration, offering a series of paintings that reflect Collins' intimate connection with the Australian landscape. The exhibition showcases his ability to distill vast natural scenes into compositions that are both evocative and restrained.Throughout his career, Collins has participated in numerous residencies, including the Australian Wildlife Conservancy Residency in Queensland and the Nock Art Foundation Residency in New Zealand . His work has been recognised in prestigious awards such as the Wynne Prize and the Salon des Refusés.In our conversation, Collins discusses his artistic journey, the influence of his surroundings, and the themes present in Brevity. He shares insights into his process and the philosophies that underpin his work.Join us as we explore the nuanced landscapes of David Collins and gain a deeper understanding of his contribution to contemporary Australian art.Brevity is on display at Defiance Gallery, 12 Mary Place, Paddington, NSW, until May 24, 2025. Happy Tuesday! If you are a true Star Trek fan like I am, then this week's episode is for you. I am talking with my friends Sam Witwer and David Collins about their beautiful and controversial new Star Trek film, 765874 Unification. If you love Star Trek and haven't heard about this project, go check it out before you listen to this week's episode! Using incredible cutting-edge technology, the film features Spock and Captain Kirk (yes, the originals!) only Kirk is played by Sam. Don't believe me? Watch the film, it will blow your mind. I've known Sam going back to when he played Crashdown on Battlestar Galactica. He has also done voice work for Star Wars: Unleashed and Star Wars: The Clone Wars. David Collins is a prolific sound designer, including for all things Star Wars, from The Mandalorian to Skeleton Crew. I had such a blast nerding out with these guys and I think you will too! Stick around for the hindsight, where my producer Jeph talk about the episode and get into the ethics of using AI to enhance an actor's performance. It's a great conversation! Carmen & Bolude marks something of a first for Australian films. Here is a comedy about two close friends, Carmen (Michela Carattini) and Bolude (Bolude Watson), who both call Australia home. Carmen proudly embraces her Latin heritage, while Bolude navigates the line between Western values and her Nigerian roots. Together, they take on the world and the rampant Americanised identity politics that have caused much society to turn against itself. We meet Carmen on the subways of New York where a man uses the close proximity of a packed train to touch her. Carmen loudly and proudly advocates for herself, standing up against the patriarchal dominance of the spaces we live. When we meet Bolude, she is also working abroad in new York, a home away from home where she needs to navigate the surprise marriage proposal from her white Aussie boyfriend Tommy (Liam Grienke). That navigation means a careful consideration of how she approaches her cultural roots, and the path that she wants to follow in her life. After all, it's quite likely that her father Akin (Wale Ojo) would disapprove of the marriage. And disapprove he does, giving Bolude the ultimatum that she needs to collect 100 welcomes from Australian locals to prove to her father that she has a home away from home. What follows is a bright and delightful celebration of sisterhood, friendship, and remembering the cultural roots that tie us to our parents and our past. What makes Carmen & Bolude something of a first for Australian films is in its proudly women-led foundations, driven by voices that want to hear themselves on screen in an industry that regularly asks for more diversity on screen. We so rarely get to hear from the Nigerian diaspora on screen in Australia, so to not only see and hear their stories, but to also witness the joy of dance, is an impactful step forward for Australian cinema.Carmen & Bolude is a joyous, life affirming comedy that'll have you grinning from start to finish. Full of rich and beautiful characters that make you feel like you're spending time with family and friends. It's a genuine delight, and I'm grateful for the time and openness that both Michela and Bolude shared with me in the following interview.Carmen & Bolude is produced by Yolandi Franken and Michela Carattini, with Michela co-directing alongside Maria Isabel Delaossa. Michela and Bolude co-wrote the script together, and take co-lead duties in the film, with a supporting cast that includes David Collins, Olivia Vasquez, Wale Ojo, and many more.In the following discussion, Michela and Bolude talk about the journey to getting this story on screen, the joy of dance, and the importance of seeing and hearing your own stories on screen.Carmen & Bolude will be screening at the Hayden Orpheum on 19 March 2025, with further screenings around Australia. Remember Loveline, the show that introduced many people to Adam Carolla and Dr. Drew? IT'S BACK!! Oh, but those guys who made it good, they have nothing to do with it. Meet Kevan Kenney, a total cornball, and Dr. Tara, a woman who would be great if she didn't talk. David Collins joins the show to explain his discomfort with the format and topics discussed. Maybe he didn't enjoy all the talk about small penises. Me and My Wife, the show Mike Calta does with his wife, talked about us again and he invited me on his radio show. There's an update on the Riley (Young Clippa) legal battle against Eric July which looks like another win for the good guys. Steel Toe misses the goal by a lot and the beggy monster is not happy. There's a new song parody from Ed and Myster Magenta. Nick Mullen and Dan Soder discuss Nick Rekieta. Stuttering John lets it slip that he was forced to resign. We're changing things up this week by starting off with Stuttering John treating his mother like his servant. We also get a peak into what it's like to be friends with John. Then we check in on Aaron Imholte who was very happy to read leaked documents when it showed that his former friends and ex-wife were arrested for coke possession. But now that there are documents that expose his domestic violence accusations he doesn't like talking about these things anymore. Then we bring in David Collins and D'licious to watch Joe Matarese bomb hard at a recent stand up show in Stamford, CT. He streamed to his YouTube channel what might be the most embarrassing show possible. But what's worse is that he then went live from the street after the show to make excuses for why he bombed so hard. Pulled toward the field of architecture and design, he soon set off for school in London, and further honed his craft under design greats like Martin Brudnizki, Annabelle Selldorf and David Collins. The podcast this week features three people who are passionate about diapers. And why not, what a convenient place to pee! There's supposed to be some kind of bet or something but that part didn't really make sense. It was more about partying, wearing diapers, and rolling 20 sided dice. Ray Devito joins the show to try to figure out what gender these “littles” actually are. I'm not sure we ever got to the bottom of that one. Then we have a brief discussion about Kevin Brennan and the fact that he wants to control anyone and everyone he's ever given money to. Ray has some Stockholm syndrome and defends the guy who treats him like shit. Who didn't see that coming? Later we're joined by David Collins who brought a whole Club Random package for us including interviews with Rachel Bilson, Seth McFarlane, and Roseanne Barr. Also, Tom Myers dropped a new episode of his podcast and Vinnie Paulino is interviewed by the great Harrison Young.
