Produced by Wayne Hall, Joseph Cottrell, Jeffrey Crecelius and Ken Fuller This week Mark and I watched the video compiled and edited by Hed Gilboa and posted to the YMP Discussion group on Facebook by Doug Curran that contains all the known crowd-shot footage of Yes on the Tales Tour of the US and Canada in 1974. One mistake I made (presumably amongst many) was to say that the Super 8 film format became available in 1975. Of course, I meant 1965 otherwise this tour couldn't have been captured using this technology. Also, as Mark mentioned later in the discussion, we do have a great opportunity to see what the stage scenery looked like in action during Ritual via the 1975 QPR film, clips from which are spliced into the Yesyears documentary, released in 1991. However, this is the Relayer tour and various elements of the stage production were enhanced by this time so it may be slightly different. I think I'm still correct when I say that there is no known professional film from the Tales Tour itself. Anyway, historical minutiae apart, I hope you enjoy listening to Mark and me geeking out about this video and discussing aspects of the Tales Tour. You may well want to watch the video itself and look at the screen grabs I've included in the show notes for this week before listening to us banging on as it may help to contextualise our ramblings. What was it like to attend a concert on the 1974 Tales Tour? What is the video evidence like? What can we learn about how Yes played Tales live? Let us know if you agree with us! Today's guest has played an important role in having me over to Stoneleigh the past couple of years, so I could interview farriers from across the pond, promote the BFBA's Focus Convention, and of course, spend some quality time with my podcast bro, Danny Bennett. As you will hear, Ben is a busy man with a lot of irons in the fire. From his position as a consultant for Team GB and one of the lead farriers for the London, Rio, and Tokyo Olympics, to his tenure as the president of the BFBA, working with his talented team to grow the BFBA Focus into its largest event ever in 2023, And his work running his farrier practice near Banbury in Oxfordshire. He's a hard man to pin down for any length of time. It only took me two trips across the pond to snag him for an hour and have this conversation. One of the highlights for me is when we really dig into his thoughts on shoeing the hind feet of performance horses for their various disciplines. The result was a lot of practical takeaways and concepts to ponder. Ben's time spent under the tutelage of Haydn Price, as well as his tenure working as a consultant for Team GB, has offered him a very unique vantage point to see these concepts at work in the real world. Anyway, I learned a lot from this gentleman, and I hope you too enjoy the conversation as much as I did.
Simon Pipe is the creator of the Banbury Hobby Horse. In 2000 councillors in the town of Banbury in Oxfordshire wanted to capitalise on the famous nursery rhyme 'Ride a cock horse to Banbury Cross'. Simon, who was a Morris dancer and had attended one-day events like Jack in the Green in Hastings, suggested a hobby horse festival for Banbury. The councillors agreed to it and the event started to take place annually. People created their own hobby horses and brought them to Banbury to parade through the streets. Simon's hobby horse is a white creature with ping pong eyes, four legs and a blue horse rug covering the wearer.
Farmers in Scotland want to see cuts to the Holyrood agriculture budget reversed and an extra billion pounds worth of funding to farmers across the country from the UK Government. Both issues were raised yesterday at the NFU Scotland conference that's taking place just now in Glasgow. National Farmers Union Scotland members are expecting to be joined by First Minister Humza Yousaf this morning. He'll be joined by Scotland's Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs, Mairi Gougeon, for what may well be a rather heated question-and-answer session. Conservationists say more should be done to preserve and restore Britain's temperate rainforests. These ancient woodlands have a mild and damp climate and support species like mosses and lichens. They may once have covered about a fifth of Britain but now just fragments of the forest remain. In December the Government pledged £750,000 for research but campaigners say more needs to be done. These days it's rare to get eggs delivered. But if you live in the village of Sibford Ferris near Banbury you could get your eggs delivered by goat. All this week we're hearing about working animals. Sue Sabin has been running an egg round for the last fourteen years with Alan, her pack-goat. Presented by Caz Graham and produced by Beatrice Fenton.
Musician Jon Batiste dishes the details on the new Netflix film American Symphony, out now, and comedian Chris McCausland will have news of his brand new tour: Yonks, which kicks off in Banbury next month.Join Chris, Vassos, Rachel, Sinead and the team every weekday for the greatest guests, the day's dealings, and laughs with the listeners, on Virgin Radio. Artificial intelligence is the buzz term of 2023. You can't scroll social media or read The New York Times without coming across it. With that said, the average person -- especially the older generation -- has a lot of misconceptions about what AI truly is and what its true impact will be on the world now and in the future. So to provide some clarity on this seemingly existential crisis, I've enlisted the help of Google researcher, former Apple intern, Harvard PhD student, and my friend Colby Banbury. From his home in Somerville, MA, Colby and I discuss the following on today's episode (0:00): The benefits of incorporating AI into our everyday lives (9:10) Whether there's any truth to the notion that the robots will take over the world (23:19) What could happen if the power of AI ends up in the wrong hands (27:04) How AI can both help and harm our own self-development, relationships, and sex (30:00) Whether advanced technology like AI is a net positive or net negative for the human race (53:17) And much more. HOUSEKEEPING: If you prefer a video component, you can watch entire episodes of "The Found Generation" on my YouTube channel To purchase my new book, "Surrender: A Guide to Living Your Best Life in Your Twenties," you can get it on Amazon. It's hard to believe it's been a whole decade since we sat down on Ellie's sofa to record the first episode of the Scummy Mummies Podcast. But here we are, having survived premature childbirth, a shitty divorce and a global pandemic, still on the sofa, and better friends than ever. In this special anniversary episode, we reminisce about the good old days, and reflect on whether we should be grateful for the bad times too. We tackle some tricky questions - how bad do the catsuits REALLY smell? What's better to make with lemons than lemonade? And how much longer do we actually think we can get away with this bullshit? Tune in to find out. We play two games - an old favourite returns, and Helen introduces Guess the Guest, which makes Ellie get something in her eye. We finish with Scummy Mummy Confessions, for the 261st time. We have TWO fabulous sponsors for this special podcast! Thank you to Their Nibs and HotSquash - two London based fashion brands we LOVE. W/C 17th October 2022If I hadn't been to Birmingham this week then I wouldn't of thought about Birds Custard. If I hadn't thought about Birds Custard, I would never have discovered that the Birds Custard Factory used to be spread of fifteen acres of land in Digbeth, and that over a 1,000 people used to work there. If I hadn't been researching the Birds Custard Factory, then I wouldn't have found out that it was originally constructed for Sir Alfred Frederick Bird in 1906, and remained there until the company moved to Banbury in 1964If I hadn't been reading about Sir Alfred Frederick Bird, then I wouldn't have discovered that his Dad Alfred Bird invented egg-free custard in 1837.And if I hadn't started down this path, I wouldn't have reached the conclusion that had Alfred's wife not been allergic to eggs I probably wouldn't have spent my week in Birmingham in the first place.Stay safe.Another One Bites The Dust - QueenMonopoly LifesizedCharles Walker InterviewNewsnight IntroductionBirds CustardTherapy For Me (or TFM as I now refer to it) is a bit of an audio curiosity. In William Shakespeare's play, Merry Wives of Windsor, Bardolph declares “You Banbury Cheese!” as an insult. The reason this line is an insult is because for the life of William Shakespeare, Banbury England was famous for making a particular kind of cheese that was thinner on the rind than other cheese typical of the period. Therefore, calling someone a Banbury cheese was akin to calling them a string-bean, or saying they were too thin. It works especially well as a joke for Shakespeare in the play because the character Bardolph is insulting is named, as you might expect, Slender. The joke is a highly contemporary reference by Shakespeare and in order to better understand the history of Banbury England and their famous cheese, we have invited the chair of the Banbury Historical Society, Helen Forde, to visit with us today and explain what made Banbury cheese so unique for Shakespeare's lifetime.

Today we are talking with Bowen Banbury, the CEO of Thunderbird Capital. Bowen's first company came about after a failed real estate venture his father had made. He saw a problem and came up with a solution. A once unusable two floors of space turned into a business that exited to the tune of 8 figures. Unfortunately, Bowen's story has a lot of turmoil involved, but he's learned a lot from it, and is a better businessman for it. CEO's Are Human After college, Bowen went straight into business school. He was given an opportunity to be second in command at a new non-profit office in Honolulu. It was an association of CEOs from around that Pacific Rim that did conferences and white papers. Bowen was rubbing elbows with the likes of Boeing and Motorola. He says it was an amazing experience to see how human they were and to witness them make mistakes just like the rest of us. Bowen spent 5 years there before him and his wife decided to move back to the mainland to start a family. A Solution To A Problem Upon moving back, Bowen had learned that his father had purchased two floors of a condominium with no windows. He planned to renovate it, add windows, and rent the condos out. Unfortunately, the HOA wouldn't give him approval to put in windows. Now stuck with two floors that he couldn't use, Bowen had an idea. He knew how expensive it was to keep an office full of documents. He thought they could use the space for records storage. Bowen's dad gave him the green light to start Docuvault. With a prime location in downtown Denver, Bowen started going door to door to law firms. Family Feud When Bowen first started Docuvault, the agreement was that, other than some equity in the company, Bowen's dad would have no part in it. Bowen says his dad didn't honor that and was always poking into the business. Bowen found himself running around cleaning up his father's messes for 5 years before he got tired of it. So, they rewrote the operating agreement and paid Bowen's dad 4% of gross revenue just to stay out of the company. That lasted about 4 years before Bowen's dad was back at his old antics. Finally, Bowen's dad has crossed a line, and they couldn't resolve their differences outside of litigation. Knowing What You Know Now, What Would You Tell Yourself Ten Years Ago? Bowen thinks back to the legal mess with his family and decides he would tell himself to settle and move on. He says it's not important to win, just rip off the band-aid. Bowen regrets that he spent 7 years in litigation just because everyone wanted to win. What Bowen Is Working On Now Always dabbling in different things, Bowen says he currently owns some wireless stores and some real estate. He's also the CEO and owner of The Alternative Board, or TAB. He describes it as an executive coaching platform. He helps to run peer boards for other businesses. He enjoys helping people to grow and get their ducks in a row. If you're interested in checking out TAB, visit www.tabdenvereast.com. If you'd like to connect with Bowen, he can be reached at bowen@thunderbirdcapital.com. -- The Exit—Presented By Flippa: A 30-minute podcast featuring expert entrepreneurs who have been there and done it. Joshua Banbury's work and personal narrative are a tapestry of rich textures influenced by the wide range of music (Jazz, Folk Music, Classical, Carnatic Music and Art Songs) that he has been a student of and performed at the highest levels. He is also artistically and intellectually inspired by Surrealist artists like Leonora Carrington, his Texas roots, and the folk songs of Appalachia. Joshua is musically gifted. What he can do from a technical perspective and evoke from an emotional standpoint with his rich baritone voice is singular. The sound is haunting, unusual, unexpected. As he describes it himself, he has slowly chiseled all the musical influences he has studied into a perfectly unique sculpture that is his voice. Like an archeologist, he uses his voice to excavate and document his life story and to affirm that his history is beautiful just as it is. Now as a librettist with writing commissions for some of the most prestigious music and art institutions in America like the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the New York Philharmonic, he is crossing over into the realm of genius.Joshua views his music as a way to construct what he calls “ecosystems in his mind” where he can invite others to dwell with him. Like all of us on a quest for something larger than ourselves, the road Joshua travels is long and winding where he faces the complexities of race, sexuality and the sheer energy it takes to be engaged in any creative process. When I posed the question to him what advice he would give to his younger self as Joshua began his musical journey in earnest, he stated something we can all learn from – “I'm different for a reason. I have been sent here to do different things. My path is different.”Music by Joshua Banbury // Song: Brightest and BestJoshua's websiteJoshua on YouTubeJoshua on IGPatrick's WebsitePatrick's IGAt the Podium on IGPatrick on LinkedInPatrick on Facebook
Episode 41 (aka Season 3 episode 2): On January 2nd 1923, John Reith interviewed Miss Frances Isobel Shields for a job at the BBC, to be his secretary. At the time the BBC had four or five male staff members. Miss Shields started work on January 8th, instantly making the BBC a 20% female organisation. It's been greater than that ever since. This episode's fab guest is Dr Kate Murphy: academic, former producer of BBC's Woman's Hour and author of Behind the Wireless: A History of Early Women at the BBC. Her book is brilliant and highly recommended for a deep dive into the subject. Hear Isobel Shields' tale, plus the women who broadcast before her: Britain's first DJ Gertrude Donisthorpe, 2LO's first children's presenter Vivienne Chatterton, and one of our first broadcast comedians Helena Millais. (You can hear their fuller tales if you go back to the earlier episodes on this podcast.) And hear about some of the women who joined the BBC soon after Miss Shields, like telephonist Olive May and women's staff supervisor Caroline Banks. Plus hear about some of John Reith's unusual management practices, from taking his secretaries to the cinema to his brutal firing criteria. But we dwell on his hiring not firing, as well tell the origin story of British broadcasting. And Dr Murphy will return on future episodes! With tales of the first Women's Hour (not Woman's Hour) in May 1923, and the early female managers, like Mary Somerville and Hilda Matheson. To catch those episodes, you'll have to stay subscribed to this podcast. While you're there, would you give us a review where you found this podcast? It all helps bring new listeners on board. Happy New Year, 1923! And Happy New Season: 3, that is, as we tell the story of the BBC's 3rd-6th months. Formative times at Auntie Beeb, as the staff grows from 4 in one room to a new premises at Savoy Hill. Season 3 begins with this, episode 40 overall, on New Year's Day 1923. John Reith, Arthur Burrows, Cecil Lewis and Major Anderson begin work in the one-room BBC, like an Amish schoolhouse. Each day, the number of staff and visitors grow - and helpfully Reith, Burrows and Lewis all wrote vividly about the manic days of Magnet House - home to the BBC for the first four months of 1923. We're grateful to the books: Broadcasting from Within by C.A. Lewis The Story of Broadcasting by A.R. Burrows The Reith Diaries, edited by Charles Stuart Broadcasting over Britain by J.C.W. Reith Into the Wind by J.C.W. Reith Plus you'll hear from the 5th (or 6th) BBC employee, Rex Palmer in a rare clip of 1920s broadcasting. More up to date, 'Diddy' David Hamilton is our guest - the man with the greatest listening figures in the history of British radio. David's books, The Golden Days of Radio 1, and Commercial Radio Daze, are available at ashwaterpress.co.uk. Part 1 of our interview with David was on episode 30, and part 3 will be on a future episode. Want to watch, in-vision, the full interview? Join our band of matrons and patrons on Patreon - the full video is here. And THANK YOU to all who support us there, and keep us afloat as a one-man-band of a podcast. Part 1 and Part 2 will be followed, of course, by Part 3 - and if you want it sooner, dear Patreon subscriber, just ask and I'll read/record/upload pronto.
