Guests Marianne Bellotti | Greg Wilson Panelist Richard Littauer Show Notes In this episode of Sustain, host Richard Littauer talks with Marianne Bellotti, author of *Kill It with Fire, *and Greg Wilson, co-founder of the Carpentries, about what happens to your code when you leave your job and how to make sure it survives. They discuss their new paper, "10 quick tips for making your software outlive your job (https://arxiv.org/abs/2505.06484)," and share practical strategies for protecting, documenting, and sustaining code in open source, research, and civil service environments. Whether you're preparing for a job change or want to future-proof your work, this conversation offers real-world advice for developers and researchers alike. Hit the download button now! [00:03:04] Greg and Marianne talk about challenges in code sustainability. [00:05:46] Greg speaks about how scientists often prototype rather than build production quality code. [00:09:48] We start with Step 1 in the paper: “Consider your threat mode.” Greg explains the different plans needed for individual vs. systematic departures, Marianne speaks about the importance of understanding code lifecycle-some code has a “fruit fly” lifespan others a “tortoise” one, and Richard adds to think about reframe threat modeling around future usefulness. [00:15:53] There's a discussion on Step 2: “Get sign-off on releasing it publicly.” [00:21:30] Greg discusses Step 3: “Choose an open license” and emphasizes to stick to well-known licenses (MIT, BSD), don't write your own, and he shares a funny story. [00:25:29] Richard talks about Step 4: “Put your code somewhere safe” and shares to upload code to GitHub, Codeberg, OSF, Zenodo, etc. Greg suggest peer-to-peer methods like torrents could help long-term preservation and Marianne emphasizes the importance of verified identities when sharing. [00:29:21] Marianne introduces Step 5: “Document your code.” Greg shares that most documentation goes unread and LLMs could help mine useful documentation from conversation records and Marianne emphasizes to focus on “how to run it” first and tests are a part of your documentation. [00:35:17] Step 6: “Make your code reproducible.” Greg and Marianne discuss using tools like Docker, uv for Python lockfiles, etc., for dependency management. [00:36:23] Step 7: “Make your code citable” and Step 8: “Encourage community adoption.” Richard mentions to add a CITATION.cff file so others can cite your code and Greg mentions a great book he read that changed the way he viewed this called, Marketing for Scientists, by Marc Kuchner. [00:38:49] Step 9: “Write a succession or sunsetting plan.” Marianne shares to define success and failure criteria for projects explicitly. [00:40:36] Step 10: “Talk about what you're doing.” Greg emphasizes to celebrate and grieve project endings properly and Richard encourages listeners to check out the paper, read it, and if you see something missing you can contribute back. [00:43:12] Fnal thoughts from Greg and Marianne: Organize collectively to protect science and code sustainability and find your team. Quotes [00:12:10] “Weapons begin as toys.” [00:14:09] “All code is throwaway code.” [00:27:34] “Sooner or later every library burns.” [00:29:44] “Most documentation is never read by anybody because it's not answering the questions that you actually have.” [00:41:05] “Take some time to celebrate and to grieve.” Links SustainOSS (https://sustainoss.org/) podcast@sustainoss.org (mailto:podcast@sustainoss.org) richard@sustainoss.org (mailto:richard@sustainoss.org) SustainOSS Discourse (https://discourse.sustainoss.org/) SustainOSS Mastodon (https://mastodon.social/tags/sustainoss) SustainOSS Bluesky (https://bsky.app/profile/sustainoss.bsky.social) SustainOSS LinkedIn (https://www.linkedin.com/company/sustainoss/) Open Collective-SustainOSS (Contribute) (https://opencollective.com/sustainoss) Richard Littauer Socials (https://www.burntfen.com/2023-05-30/socials) Marianne Bellotti (Medium) (https://bellmar.medium.com/) Marianne Bellotti LinkedIn (https://www.linkedin.com/in/bellmar/) Greg Wilson GitHub (https://www.linkedin.com/in/greg-wilson-a26510b6/?originalSubdomain=ca) Greg Wilson LinkedIn (https://www.linkedin.com/in/greg-wilson-a26510b6/?originalSubdomain=ca) “10 Quick tips for making your code last beyond your current job” (draft) (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1jk0R8VL8lq1-LIbW9D5qwCkvxfXEobP0-RqSYF-4Io4/edit#heading=h.2ijt9lezevm3) Kill It With Fire by Marianne Bellotti (https://nostarch.com/kill-it-fire) Marketing for Scientists: How to Shine in Tough Times by Marc J. Products often tell you exactly how they're intended to be used. But why leave it at that? As a culture, we have long had a knack for finding ingenious, off-label uses for things. In this episode, we take a close look at a few examples of products that are ostensibly meant for one thing, but are better known for something else entirely. We explore Q-tips, which we are explicitly told not to put into our ears; the Hitachi Magic Wand, the iconic sex toy marketed as a body massager; the musical washboard; and the children's electrolyte solution Pedialyte that many adults swear by as a hangover cure. You'll hear from Hallie Lieberman, author of Buzz: A Stimulating History of the Sex Toy; Jacqui Barnett of the Columbus Washboard Company; Christopher Wilson, curator and chair of the Division of Home and Community Life at the Smithsonian; musician and educator Súle Greg Wilson; zydeco musicians C.J. Chenier and Steve Nash; Shaughnessy Bishop-Stall, author of Hungover: The Morning After and One Man's Quest for the Cure; as well as writers Roberto Ferdman, Dan Brooks, and Kaitlyn Tiffany. Guest Alison Hill Panelist Richard Littauer Show Notes We're kicking off the new year of Sustain with host Richard Littauer discussing sustaining open source software with guest, Alison Hill, VP of Product at Anaconda, and a cognitive scientist with a PhD in psychology. Alison shares her journey from academia to industry, emphasizing the importance of statistics and data science in her career. She explains her role at Anaconda, focusing on developing secure and compatible distribution of Python packages and managing the community repository, Anaconda.org. The conversation covers the significance of product management in open source projects, particularly those with corporate backing, and how these roles can help in balancing user needs and business goals. In addition, Alison shares her thoughts on the challenges and strategies for maintaining open source projects without corporate support and touches on the ‘palmer penguins' project. Click to download now! [00:01:13] Alison discusses her transition from academic research in cognitive science to industry and data science, emphasizing her passion for statistics and education. [00:02:41] Alison explains her work at Anaconda, focusing on product management and the Anaconda distribution, aiming to ease the use of Python and R packages in the industry and academia. She also elaborates on other projects she oversees, including Anaconda.org and its role in supporting open source projects and enterprise needs. [00:05:17] We hear how Anaconda sustains itself financially through enterprise offerings and the balance of supporting open source while maintaining a business model. [00:07:14] Alison shares her previous experience as the first PM of data science communication at Posit (formerly RStudio) and her role in enhancing data science education and product development. [00:12:49] Richard and Alison explore the challenges of sustaining open source projects without corporate backing and strategies for maintaining personal and project health in the open source community. Alison discusses common mistakes companies make by confusing project management with product management in open source projects. [00:17:18] Richard asks about the skills needed for developers to adopt a product-oriented approach. Alison suggests that successful product-oriented developers often have high empathy for end-users and experience with the pain points at scale, which helps them anticipate and innovate solutions effectively. [00:20:49] Richard expresses concerns about the sustainability of smaller, community-led open source projects that lack corporate backing and the structured support that comes with it. Alison acknowledges her limited experience with non-corporate open source projects but highlights the difficulty in maintaining such projects without institutional support, and she shares her personal challenges with keeping up with open source project demands. [00:27:41] Alison stresses the importance of clear goals and understanding the implications of joining larger ecosystems, reflects on the need for clarity about the desired outcomes when joining larger ecosystems, and shares examples of successful and unsuccessful engagements in such settings. [00:29:52] She discusses alternative sustainability models, including paid support and subscriptions. Send us a text Alexis welcomes Greg Wilson, Chief of Staff for Superintendent Debbie Critchfield of the Idaho Department of Education, to discuss the proposed changes to high school graduation requirements in Idaho. The conversation revolves around the process and rationale for these updates, which include replacing the speech credit with a digital literacy requirement. Greg outlines the procedure for implementing the changes, starting with a proposal from the Department of Education, approval by the State Board of Education, and final authorization from the Legislature, making this the first overhaul of graduation criteria in over a decade. The discussion touches on the four major proposals, including the addition of digital literacy, updates to the senior project, a guide for aligning electives with future goals, and ensuring students graduate with “currency” for their futures. Greg addresses questions about the quality and rigor of the new digital literacy course, concerns about the loss of essential interpersonal skills, and potential impacts on speech teachers. Throughout the episode, the balancing act between modernizing education and preserving critical soft skills takes center stage. These changes, if approved, are expected to be fully implemented for the graduating class of 2028.Find Alexis on Instagram and JOIN in the conversation: https://www.instagram.com/the_idaho_lady/Send Alexis an email with guest requests, ideas, or potential collaboration.alexis@ourkidsourschools.comFind great resources and info on school communities:https://ourkidsourschools.com/

Lieutenant Colonel Greg Wilson served in Vietnam & Laos as a Forward Air Controller. As a Forward Air Controller, it was his job to coordinate airstrikes, and ensure that no friendly troops were hit. After less than six months in Vietnam, he joined the classified Steve Canyon Program (Project 404), also known as the Ravens.  Laos was technically neutral during the Vietnam war, and no foreign troops were supposed to be in the country. Nonetheless, the North Vietnamese continued to use Laos in order to import supplies via the Ho Chi Minh trail. Needing to stop the flow of enemy supplies, the USAF began secret airborne operations, targeting enemy vehicles, ground troops, and weapon systems.  The Raven program was eventually developed in order to better execute these operations. Raven pilots wore civilian clothes, and their job was to mark targets with smoke rockets, and direct air strikes onto them.  In this interview, Lt Col Wilson talks about his experience as a FAC and a Raven. He tells this story about first joining the Ravens: “So, I went out for a flight with one of the Ravens, Erik Erikson, and he was in the backseat…He gave me a set of coordinates. I said, ‘Well, there's got to be something. There's got to be a trick here, because this coordinate is right in the middle of a map. I don't have to piece them together.' So, I flew to those coordinates, and he said, ‘What do you see down there?' So, I looked down and I said, ‘Well, it looks like a crashed 0-1.' He said, ‘You're right. What else do you see down there?' I said, ‘Well, I can't be sure, but I'd say that it looks like skeletal remains.' And he said, ‘You're right again. You're his replacement.' So, that was kind of my wakeup call that they figured I was a rookie. And they also, wanted to let me know that this was the real game, that there was threat here. And that if you were shot down in this environment, you were not going to be captured, you were not going to be a POW, you were going to be a fatality.” Learn more about Wilson here. The Rich Zeoli Show- Full Episode (12/08/2022): 3:00pm- On Tuesday, President Joe Biden announced that his administration successfully negotiated the release of WNBA star Brittney Griner from a Russian detention center. Griner had been accused of carrying illegal vape cartridges. The prisoner swamp involved the Biden Administration agreeing to release Viktor Bout, a Russian arms dealer nicknamed the Merchant of Death. According to reporting from Jim Geraghty of The National Review, “at one point” Bout was “the second-most-wanted man after Osama bin Laden.” 3:15pm- During her Thursday press conference, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre defended the Biden Administration's decision to trade a dangerous arms dealer for a professional athlete in the U.S.-Russia prisoner swap.  3:35pm- On the U.S.-Russia prisoner swap, National Review's Jim Geraghty writes that other nations may now conclude, “the U.S. government will release anyone under enough pressure.” Does this exchange encourage other adversarial nations to wrongfully imprison American citizens, hoping that it can result in valuable concessions? 3:45pm- While appearing on CNN, Coordinator for Strategic Communications at the U.S. National Security Council John Kirby emphasized that Paul Whelan—a Marine imprisoned in Russia—was “never a bargaining chip” for Viktor Bout. Why not? And, after releasing Bout, what bargaining chip does the Biden Administration have to encourage Whelan's release?   4:05pm- According to a report from Greg Wilson of The Daily Wire, “Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman helped broker the dramatic prisoner swap between the U.S. and Moscow that sprang WNBA star Brittney Griner from a Russian gulag, days after the Biden administration helped spike a lawsuit against the Saudi ruler.” 4:15pm- David Whelan, the brother of Marine Paul Whelan who has been wrongfully detained by Russia since 2018, told CNN that he and his family were incredibly happy to see Brittney Griner has been freed, but they obviously remain disappointed that Paul remains imprisoned.  4:40pm- Speaking with Martha MacCallum on Fox News, Coordinator for Strategic Communications at the U.S. National Security Council John Kirby dismissed the idea that the Griner-Bout prisoner exchange encourages foreign adversaries to abduct Americans.  4:50pm- The Biden Administration's foreign policy blunders didn't start with a lopsided prisoner exchange with Russia. The New York Times released a video essay documenting America's abandonment of allies during the August 2021 withdrawal from Afghanistan. Despite being over a year later, tens of thousands of Afghan-allies remain stranded—with many being actively hunted by the Taliban. 5:00pm- While everyone is happy to see Brittney Griner finally released from an unjust Russian detainment, should the Biden Administration have been able to extract more concessions in exchange for Viktor Bout—an individual who, at one point, was considered the second-most wanted man in the world. Listeners react to the prisoner exchange.    5:15pm- During an interview with Variety, Jennifer Lawrence claimed that Hunger Games was the first time Hollywood featured a female actor in an action film. But what about Sigourney Weaver in Aliens, Linda Hamilton in Terminator, Angelina Jolie in Tomb Raider…the list goes on and on... 5:30 pm- On CNBC, Harvard University professor Jason Furman—who served as an Economic Advisor in the Obama Administration—warned that a mild recession is likely to occur soon, though it won't necessarily resolve inflation. 5:50pm- The Mystery Movie Clip: Henry plays the whole movie… 6:05pm- During her Thursday press conference, White House Press Secretary referred to Brittney Griner as an “important role model” and defended the Biden Administration's decision to trade a dangerous arms dealer for a professional athlete in the U.S.-Russia prisoner swap. Will teacher Mark Fogel and Marine Paul Whelan ever be released from their unjust Russian imprisonment?  6:30pm- According to a report from The Daily Wire, a professor at Sacramento City College is under an internal investigation for being critical of “gender affirmation” surgeries being performed on children.  6:45pm- Disney released the trailer for the new Indiana Jones film: Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. It doesn't look great…but Rich will see it anyway! 6:50pm- Does Discovery's “Shark Week” lack diversity? According to Daniel Wu of The Washington Post, not only does the television event lack diversity, it also emphasizes “negative messages about sharks.”

The Rich Zeoli Show- Full Show (11/22/2022) 3:05pm- Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg announced he will be reopening an investigation into Donald Trump regarding payments made to adult film star Stormy Daniels and alleged business fraud. In The Daily Wire, Greg Wilson argues that the numerous investigations into the former president are forms of punishment regardless of conviction. He states: “Prosecutors usually only like to take on cases they know they can win, but it's different when it comes to dirtying up Trump.” 3:30pm- According to The Post Millennial, the Associated Press has fired Jim Laporta—the journalist who falsely reported that a Russian missile had killed multiple people in Poland, a NATO ally.  3:35pm- During today's press conference, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean Pierre told a reporter “I'm done with you” after repeatedly telling members of the press that her and Dr. Anthony Fauci would not be answering questions about the origins of COVID-19.  3:45pm- On Tuesday, Dr. Anthony Fauci—director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases—delivered his final message from the White House press podium prior to his scheduled retirement at the end of the year. He used the platform to implore Americans to get vaccinated against COVID-19.  4:05pm- In a recent National Review editorial, national affairs reporter John Fund told Democrats to return monetary donations from FTX and its CEO Sam Bankman-Fried. According to the Center for Responsive Politics, FTX executives donated $57 million to Democrat candidates and progressive organizations. Executives of FTX, a now bankrupt cryptocurrency exchange business, are currently under investigation for fraud.  4:20pm- CNN reports that the United States is running low on some weapons and ammunition being used by the Ukrainian military for defense against Russia.  4:35pm- While appearing on Fox News, Senator Tom Cotton said that he believes China, under the leadership of its President Xi Jinping, may attempt to annex Taiwan as soon as next year. 4:40pm- Despite promising to hold Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman accountable for the murder of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi, President Joe Biden has provided MBS with immunity from a lawsuit filed by Khashoggi's fiancé. Just several days after the administration's decision, OPEC+ announced plans to increase its production of oil. Is it a coincidence? 5:05pm- According to an NJ.com report, the New Jersey State Assembly voted on a measure to limit concealed carry throughout the state.  5:15pm- While appearing on Tom Segura's podcast, filmmaker Quentin Tarantino said there are very few genuine movie stars today—arguing that moviegoers pay to see comic book characters and superheroes, not specific actors. 5:30pm- While speaking from the U.S. Southern Border in Texas, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy said if Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas does not resign by the time Republicans take over the House of Representatives on January 3rd, he will be under investigation for border security failures. 5:45pm- On his HBO television show, Bill Maher said that the source of “rot” on the political left stems from woke academia. Why did Harvard and Yale withdraw from the U.S. News Law School Ranking System? The Wall Street Journal editorial board suggests that by rejecting ranking systems, the schools “may be adapting ahead of a Supreme Court ruling on the use of race in admissions” and that this could “serve as a cover for a desire by Yale to be free to admit students with lower test scores in service to diversity.” 6:05pm- While on The View, host Whoopi Goldberg suggested that people should go back to wearing masks when out in public to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19 and other colds.   6:25pm- The Rich Zeoli Show is preempted for Temple Basketball!
