We're throwing it back with this one. I'd been wanting to do a show about being a Black Greek for years. I never really got around to it because, if I'm for real, I hadn't fully grasped how I wanted to approach it. While there are several angles that I considered, I thought I'd start this conversation focusing on how being first-generation and a member of a Black Greek-letter organization (BGLO) has changed my life. Warning: I'm heavy on the Delta Sigma Theta this in one, but... in my defense... it's J13. (And, so you know now, I've been rounding up a Divine Nine First-Gen Squad because this is just the start of a series of conversations to come.) Don't forget to get connected with me on all LinkedIn, Instagram, and Facebook at @Evingerlean. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

After going on and on about how being first-generation in a BGLO has changed my life, exactly one week since J13, the National President for my sorority transitioned. While I was already planning for today to be a show pulled from the archives, it was crystal clear to me which one it needed to be. It's even more interesting that, at the time of this airing, it's just six days shy of a year from its original release. It feels like a reminder that we always have what we need to continue to press forward.Nothing is comparable to the special kind of pain felt when a close mentor transitions. The pain is often associated with memories or moments that we've had with them, but more so the lessons they didn't have time to teach us. It's as if our personal journeys have lost direction, and we find ourselves suddenly lost. What we can't see, in the blurriness of our pain, is that a true mentor never really dies. Their work lives on in us. Check out the full session notes: www.evehudsonphd.com/202 Join the Movement: www.evehudsonphd.com/movement See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

#KamalaHarris is energizing quite a few “minority” intersections within the electorate as #JoeBiden’s VP pick. She’s a woman and an HBCU graduate (Howard University). She’s also “Black” (Jamaican), “Asian” (Indian) and “Greek”...and by “Greek”, I mean she’s a member of a Greek-lettered organization. In addition to the ethnic and educational diversity Harris brings to the Biden ticket, her membership in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc (AKA) is also a major selling point amongst some minority voters. As the first Black Greek-lettered organization (BGLO), AKA has strong ties in the Black community as well as in the wider political, business, and even religious arenas. Yet, a growing number of Christians are renouncing their membership in this organization and other BGLOs. But why? Find out in this Relevant Replay as we revisit our season 1 interview with Lily J, who renounced her letters in AKA after she became a Believer in Christ.

In their new book Diversity in Black Greek-Letter Organizations: Breaking the Line (Routledge, 2018), Wendy M. Laybourn and Devon R. Goss explore the motivations for membership as well as the impact that these experiences had for non-black BGLO members. Membership to BGLOs provides non-black members with the opportunity to reinterpret their own racial identities. Diversity in Black Greek-Letter Organizations provides a good opportunity to explore the opportunities and challenges of cross-racial interactions within civil society organizations. Felipe G. Santos is a PhD candidate at the Central European University. His research is focused on how activists care for each other and how care practices within social movements mobilize and radicalize heavily aggrieved collectives. Learn more about your ad choices. Black Greek-Letter organizations (BGLOs) appeared as an initiative from black college students to provide support, opportunities and service, as well as a free space for the black community. Despite most BGLO members are black, there are some non-black students who decide to join these organizations. Deborah Whaley’s new book Disciplining Women: Alpha Kappa Alpha, Black Counterpublics, and the Cultural Politics of Black Sororities (SUNY Press, 2010) may be the first full-length study of a Black Greek-Letter Organization (BGLO) written by a non-BGLO member. But that’s not the only reason to read her book. Whaley takes an interdisciplinary approach to the study, which includes a personal rumination on her family’s relation to BGLO’s, interviews with sorority sisters, ethnographic participant observations, and literary and film analyses. Her foray into popular black culture is enriched by deep critical engagement with such texts as Spike Lee’s canonical film “School Daze” and the recent cinematic representation of Black Greek life “Stomp the Yard.” Whaley takes her subject matter seriously, but not so much so that her book lacks wit and charm. Indeed, her prose is just as pleasant, inviting, and engaging as she is in the interview. Check it out. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
