In this episode, I sit down with returning guest and our problematic fav, Brian, for a hilarious, honest, and thought-provoking conversation that runs the gamut—from Greek life to the chaos of modern dating. We break down the challenges facing Black Greek organizations today and how they intersect with cultural shifts and current events. And because the convo got that good, we saved the unfiltered extras exclusively for the Patreon crew! We also discuss:
In this compelling episode of "Murder in the Black," the intricate and tragic story of Lita McClinton unfolds, spotlighting a prominent woman within Atlanta's Black elite who was murdered under enigmatic circumstances. The narrative examines Lita's life in depth, revealing her achievements and relationships, particularly focusing on her marriage. It also contextualizes her existence within the fabric of Atlanta's elite Black community, touching on significant organizations such as Jack and Jill of America, which fosters leadership skills among children from affluent Black families, as well as the critical role of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in shaping societal dynamics. Additionally, it delves into the historical significance of the Divine Nine, a collective of nine prominent Black Greek-letter organizations, and their influence on social networks within this community. The discussion further extends to the investigation into Lita's death, outlining the challenges faced by law enforcement and the legal system as they navigated through a complex web of social interactions and community ties. The ensuing trial became a focal point not just for the justice sought in Lita's case, but also for broader conversations about accountability and systemic issues within society. Through this examination, the episode poignantly highlights themes of love and loss, emphasizing the personal impact of Lita's murder on her family and friends. It also critically addresses the nuances of social status in the pursuit of justice, as the narrative makes evident the complexities surrounding race and privilege in America. Overall, it reveals the layers of societal challenges faced by those within the Black elite, prompting a deeper reflection on justice and the intricacies of identity and community. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Chapters 00:00 The Shocking Murder of Lita McClinton 05:47 Exploring the Black Elite in Atlanta 10:30 The Complexities of Interracial Relationships 14:55 The Downfall of Lita and Jim Sullivan's Marriage 19:20 Lita's Struggles and Quest for Independence 23:39 The Divorce and Its Challenges 36:37 The Pivotal Day: Lita's Last Stand 38:26 Eavesdropping and Suspicions 41:47 The Investigation Begins 43:54 Murder-for-Hire Scheme Uncovered 47:21 The Search for Johnny Furr 54:47 Trial and Dismissal: A Shocking Turn 58:28 A New Lead After Years 01:03:29 The Final Trial and Justice Served 01:07:38 trueCrime-outro-high-long.wav --------------------------------------------------------------------- OXYGEN EPISODE FEAT. Are we going to end hazing? To answer that question, we turned to Dr. Carolyn Eastlin, the Director of Institutional Equity at Oklahoma City Community College. Dr. Eastlin earned a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership from the Educational Foundations and Leadership Department at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. She also obtained a Master of Science in Education in Adult Education from the Counseling Adult and Higher Education Department and Bachelor of General Studies from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Northern Illinois University. Dr. Eastlin's research interests include: (1) Hazing within Black Greek-letter organizations (BGLOs); (2) The effect of state anti-hazing statues on BGLOs; and (3) How hazing deaths effect BGLOs group decision making. She aspires to use this knowledge to create anti-hazing trainings and leadership trainings that elicit an emotional response that results in changed behaviors within BGLOs and other multicultural organizations. Email her at: ceastlin@thececollaborative.net In episode 491 of the Fraternity Foodie Podcast, we find out why she chose Northern Illinois for her undergraduate and Masters collegiate experience, why she chose Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., what she would do differently about her experience as NPHC President, what are her responsibilities as Director of Institutional Equity at Oklahoma City Community College, how we can make our Fraternities and Sororities more welcoming for students with disabilities, how we can make our fraternities and sororities more diverse, are we going to end hazing in college fraternities and sororities, and how students without positions in their organizations can still be leaders. Enjoy!
The Vice President came of age inside collegiate institutions that have shaped Black, middle-class culture for generations. She says they imprinted deeply upon her as well. Kamala Harris's story is remarkable in numerous ways. If elected president, she'll be the first coming from several life experiences, including one that many Black commentators have noticed: She'd be the first president who's a graduate of an HBCU, and a member of one of the “Divine Nine” Black sororities and fraternities. She called her time at Howard University, and her membership in the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, an important part of her journey. So what can we learn about the would-be president by looking at those institutions? In this episode, host Kai Wright discusses who the “Divine Nine” are and why they were created with Lawrence Ross, and then chats with historian Dr. Natalie Hopkinson. Political analyst Dr. Christina Greer gives us cultural context on how HBCUs like Howard shaped not only Harris, but a whole generation of Black university students. She talks about the influence of Black Greek life, and the nuanced politics of the 1980s. Every summer we crowdsource a Spotify playlist with our listeners built around a particular theme. Sherwin wraps up the show concluding that Black Greek Letter Organizations are indeed a gang, dare he say, a cult. He also thinks it supports elitism and is selective in its support of the Black Community. Savanna refutes this, but is this how all of the Black community see Black Greeks?

Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., a prominent member of the National Pan-Hellenic Council, celebrated its founding anniversary on November 12, 1922, at Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana. It was established by seven young educators, and the sorority has since grown into a significant force within the Divine 9, which is a collective term for historically Black Greek-letter organizations. As part of its ongoing commitment to community engagement and youth development, the Kappa Omicron Sigma chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho, in collaboration with the Nu Phi Sigma Chapter, is organizing a youth symposium on Saturday, March 9th. The event will take place at Susquehanna Township High School and is aligned with Sigma Gamma Rho's national signature program, Project Reassurance. The youth symposium aims to provide a platform for young individuals to engage in meaningful discussions, gain valuable insights, and foster personal growth. Through interactive workshops, informative sessions, and engaging activities, participants will have the opportunity to explore topics such as leadership, academic excellence, and social responsibility. By leveraging the collective expertise and resources of Sigma Gamma Rho, the symposium seeks to empower youth with the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to navigate various challenges and succeed in both their personal and academic endeavors. Additionally, the event underscores the sorority's unwavering commitment to supporting and uplifting future generations. Project Reassurance, the flagship program of Sigma Gamma Rho, embodies the organization's dedication to community service and advocacy. Through initiatives focused on education, health, and social justice, Sigma Gamma Rho strives to make a meaningful impact and effect positive change within marginalized communities. The upcoming youth symposium represents a continuation of Sigma Gamma Rho's longstanding tradition of excellence and service. By investing in the next generation of leaders and change-makers, the sorority reaffirms its commitment to building a brighter, more inclusive future for all. In addition to providing a platform for personal and professional development, the symposium also serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of Sigma Gamma Rho and its ongoing relevance in today's society. As the sorority celebrates nearly a century of sisterhood, scholarship, and service, events like the youth symposium highlight the vital role that organizations like Sigma Gamma Rho play in shaping the leaders of tomorrow. As the Kappa Omicron Sigma chapter and the Nu Phi Sigma Chapter come together to host this impactful event, they demonstrate the power of collaboration and collective action in driving positive change. Through their shared commitment to empowering youth and fostering community engagement, Sigma Gamma Rho continues to be a beacon of hope and inspiration for generations to come. The podcast "Mental Salvation Radio episode 50: Thoughts of a 50-year-old" was recorded on Saturday, November 11th, 2023. He discusses the Marine Corps birthday, which is on November 10th, and celebrates the establishment of the US Marine Corps in 1775. The speakers question why the Marine Corps birthday is not acknowledged on the calendar and is instead labeled as a substitute for Veterans Day. They argue that the Marine Corps deserves more recognition and praise for their service, drawing parallels to celebrating different fraternities and sororities within the Black Greek community. Enoch suggests that all military branches should have their designated day of celebration. The importance of the discussion lies in raising awareness about the Marine Corps' contributions and advocating for equal recognition among military branches. Enoch also questions whether the government values the Marines as much as other branches based on the lack of public holiday status for their birthday.

We're throwing it back with this one. I'd been wanting to do a show about being a Black Greek for years. I never really got around to it because, if I'm for real, I hadn't fully grasped how I wanted to approach it. While there are several angles that I considered, I thought I'd start this conversation focusing on how being first-generation and a member of a Black Greek-letter organization (BGLO) has changed my life. Warning: I'm heavy on the Delta Sigma Theta this in one, but... in my defense... it's J13. (And, so you know now, I've been rounding up a Divine Nine First-Gen Squad because this is just the start of a series of conversations to come.) I've been wanting to do a show about being a Black Greek for years. I never really got around to it because, if I'm for real, I hadn't fully grasped how I wanted to approach it.When I realized that this year's founders' day actually fell on a Thursday in 20 TWENTY-TWO, the 10NINEth year of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., I just haadddd to finally make it happen. While there are several angles that I considered, I thought I'd start this conversation focusing on how being first-generation and a member of a Black Greek-letter organization (BGLO) has changed my life. Warning: I'm heavy on the Delta Sigma Theta this in one, but... in my defense... it's J13. (And, so you know now, I've been rounding up a Divine Nine First-Gen Squad because this is just the start of a series of conversations to come.)
