Send us a Text Message.Probably you think a book titled Community Capital has to be a snoozefest. And then there's the new book with that title written by Clifford Rosenthal and Michael McCray and it's a book that will rock you and your beliefs about NCUA, African American focused credit unions and more. The book splits into two parts. There's Rosenthal's part where he looks at the struggles of smaller community based crest unions - he served as CEO of the National Federation of Community Development Credit Unions (now Inclusiv) for almost 30 years. He also put in a stint at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. He also has been a guest on the podcast, episode 37 back in 2019.And know that although Rosenthal documents the struggles of small community development credit unions, recent developments at the federal level have left him sounding downright optimistic. Then there's Michael McCray's part of the book, which documents what he sees as NCUA's systematic destruction of the Kappa Alpha Psi Credit Union, the country's first virtual credit union. Kappa Alpha Psi is an historic African American fraternity and the credit union did not go down without a fight.Note: there are a few minor audio problems early in the podcast - crackling sounds that technology didn't filter out. But the words are always audible and the content is compelling.Listen up.Like what you are hearing? Find out how you can help sponsor this podcast here. Corey McCoy, CEO of KOK Wings & Things, joins Discover Lafayette to discuss his unexpected journey into success as a restaurant entrepreneur. Growing up in a military family, he lived all over the country before moving to Lafayette to attend UL and become closer with his father. Corey served in the National Guard for six years while in school, with a top secret clearance as he worked as an Intelligence Imagery Analyst. KOK Wings & Things was founded in 2016, when Corey, Avery Bell, Tre'Jan Vinson and Jared Johnson were Kappa Alpha Psi, Inc. fraternity brothers at UL - Lafayette and living together on a shoestring while attending college. The foursome would cook chicken wings and sauces for friends, beginning with the traditional wing recipe Corey's dad provided them. They enjoyed hosting social events at their home to raise money for their fraternity. In order to pay for the cost of the food and supplies, they started charging for their wings. Word spread about the delicious wings and the "Kitchen on Klinton" thus began out of their home kitchen on Clinton Street. And things went smoothly until one day, the local police came knocking on their door, informing them that it wasn't legal to operate a commercial kitchen out of their home. They realized it was time to 'change up' their operations. KOK began with an initial investment of $250 chipped in by the the partners. As Corey says, "It was everything we had!" In the beginning, the young men would put fryers in the back of a U-Haul as they went looking for customers. In time, they were ready for a food truck. Avery's dad offered to help build a food truck on a flatbed trailer, which they found on Craig's List. KOK would park for a few months at a time around Lafayette as they built up a dependable clientele for their wings and sauces. As KOK became more professional, their goals for growth did also. Once they saw that they had a viable business model, they worked to scale the operations From the beginning, the four young men divided up the tasks of running the business. Corey became the CEO (even when they were still cooking in the back yard) and was in charge of organizing the overall operations of KOK. Avery was in charge of ordering food and supplies, Jared was the Chief Financial Officer, and Tre'Jan was in charge of marketing. It gave them an organized method to focus on growth. Corey credits Heidi Melancon of the Small Business Development Center for helping KOK get their first loan, get free consultations, and get their business bearing. He also credits LEDA and the UL Business school for its help for which he will always be grateful. KOK didn't charge sales taxes for the first two years. This turned around when Adam Curry, a CPA with Darnall, Sikes & Frederick, ordered a meal and realized that no sales tax was collected. He helped the partners get their tax and financial records in order and get their business model organized for a sustainable business model. The Lafayette location is in the former Gallagher's Restaurant, which property is still owned by Nidal Baldeisi. He traded free rent for a few months in exchange for the KOK partners' working to renovate the building as they built their profits. They rented fork lifts from Lowes, got family and friends to help, and they were off in pursuit of a successful brick and mortar business. Corey taught 8th grade history at Acadian Middle when he graduated from UL in 2016 as they built up their business. He worked until KOK turned profitable in order to ensure that he could make a paycheck. The first two years, none of the men took any paycheck from the business. With a solid track record of growth, KOK Wings now has locations in Lafayette, New Iberia and Baton Rouge. Corey and his partners have grown their company from the grassroots level into a multi-million-dollar company with over 50 employees. KOK Wings & Things sells much more than wings and sauces.

Lawrence E. Adjah is a Community Builder and Host serving at the nexus of Business, Faith, and Community Wellness. Lawrence builds communities and hosts conversations that unite, heal and transform lives. Lawrence serves as the Founder and Chairman of the Family Dinner Foundation whose mission is to connect the world as a family at and beyond the dinner table. Beginning with its first initiative, Our Family Dinner in 2008, which reached nearly 50K young professionals around the world, its work has expanded to empowering an ecosystem of initiatives dedicated to connecting brothers and sisters as a family beyond the dinner table. In a time where many of us are mediating our lives behind a computer screen and are living in cities without strong pre-existing relationships, Lawrence became burdened by the sleeping giant of our time: loneliness. Observing that we've become more digitally connected than we've ever been, yet more isolated and disconnected interpersonally than ever before, it became his mission to address this growing issue. He believes that we were never meant to do life alone and that it is vital for people to have a space where they can build lifelong, life-sustaining relationships. Through his experience in business and community building, he became convinced the solution to this challenge is as much a spiritual matter as it is a civic, social, and technological opportunity. He pursued formal theological education and training and became an ordained Pastor and spiritual counselor who brings this foundation into every aspect of his approach to community building, business and life. Lawrence currently hosts two shows, Watch God Work, a show featuring leaders from all arenas of business, entertainment, civic leadership and culture sharing their “God Stories” and A2D (Agree2Disagree) a weekly conversation that intentionally tackles the “the challenging conversations” in our community we are having or need to have in our families, friendships and/or romantic relationships. Lawrence began his career as a management consultant for McKinsey & Company in its New York office, helping to serve some of the world's largest professional sports organizations and media companies. Miami Dolphins Tales From The Deep Born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, Stanley Pritchett took his talents to an unexpected SEC school upon signing with the University of South Carolina. His decision paid off as he proved to be a dual-threat from the fullback position and ultimately became a member of Jimmy Johnson's first Dolphins draft class when Miami selected him in the fourth round of the 1996 NFL Draft. Pritchett would go on to play four seasons in aqua and orange, many of them leading the way for Karim Abdul-Jabbar. In The Tank, “Pritch” explains why he chose the Gamecocks over his home-town Georgia Bulldogs (2:12) and surprises Juice and Seth by revealing he is a member of the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity (4:01). Stanley goes on to reflect upon his '96 draft class that featured the likes of Abdul-Jabbar, Zach Thomas, Daryl Gardener, Shawn Wooden, and others and recalls how challenging his first training camp was (6:03). He discusses his relationship with former ‘Fins fullback Keith Byars (13:24) as well as his nerves entering a Dan Marino huddle for the first time (17:12). To Seth's surprise, Pritch reveals he was unaware of several records he set in early games against two AFC East rivals (20:14), but vividly recalls his “welcome to the NFL” moment given to him by former Dolphins' enforcer turned Chicago Bear, Bryan Cox (28:56). This all-purpose fullback stays on the field to wrap up the episode with The Fish Tank Two-Minute Drill (32:27). Contributors to this episode include Sean “DJ Prec” Todd and Dolphins Productions.
