Tabitha Brown: The Illness, the Loss & the Vegan Turning Point That Saved Her Life

Before the Target collabs, before the McCormick's deal, before millions of people called her their favorite auntie on the internet,Tabitha Brown was sitting in the dark, convinced she was dying. In one of the most honest conversations Happy With Tammi Mac has ever produced, host Tammi Mac creates a sacred space for Tabitha Brown to go all the way back. Back to 2016 and 2017, when she spent over a year battling a mysterious autoimmune illness that left doctors baffled and left Tabitha terrified. With a headache that lasted one year and seven months, vision loss, chronic pain, and failing strength in her hands, Tabitha's mind went to the place she feared most, her mother. Her mother, who died of ALS at just 51. Her mother, who was told by doctors that it was all in her head for 11 months, before being given six months to two years to live. Tabitha saw the mirror. And she prepared herself for the end. What saved her wasn't another doctor's appointment. It was a documentary. A conversation with her daughter. A decision to go vegan for 30 days. And on Day 10, the headache that had been her constant companion for nearly two years was gone. This episode moves through all three segments of Happy With Tammi Mac: The Dark Journey, Tabitha's health crisis and grief; The Turning Point, the plant-based decision that changed her biology and her destiny; and Finding Happy, what it means to look back at the viral car video that launched everything and choose gratitude over forgetting. Tammi Mac also shares her own story, the pandemic depression that inspired this entire podcast, reminding us that sometimes the most honest thing you can say is "I did this for me." This episode is for anyone who has been dismissed by a doctor. For anyone who has watched someone they love die too young. For anyone who has sat in the silence of a body that won't cooperate and a mind that has started saying goodbye. And for anyone who needs proof that a turning point is still possible. Happiness has been a hard word to come by, but it will exist again.

The nominations are in, the debates are loud, and the nerdiness is dialed all the way up—because this special episode of Friends Talking Nerdy is all about the 2026 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees!Join Professor Aubrey and Tim The Nerd as they break down this year's class with the perfect blend of deep music knowledge, passionate opinions, and just enough playful chaos to keep things interesting. From genre-defining pioneers to long-overdue legends, nothing is off-limits as they react to one of the most diverse induction classes in recent memory. They dive headfirst into the cultural impact and legacy of icons like Celia Cruz and Fela Kuti, celebrating the global influence that continues to shape modern music. Hip-hop gets its due as the duo discusses the groundbreaking careers of Queen Latifah, MC Lyte, and the legendary Wu-Tang Clan—and whether the Hall is finally catching up to the culture.Rock purists, don't worry—they've got you covered. Expect passionate takes (and maybe a few friendly arguments) about the inclusion of Oasis, Iron Maiden, Billy Idol, and the influential legacy of Joy Division / New Order. And yes, they absolutely get into the solo success and enduring popularity of Phil Collins—because you can't talk Hall of Fame without a little drum fill discourse. But it's not just about performers. Professor Aubrey and Tim The Nerd shine a spotlight on the behind-the-scenes legends who helped shape the sound of generations, including Linda Creed, Arif Mardin, Jimmy Miller, and Rick Rubin. Plus, they unpack the legacy of television pioneer Ed Sullivan and his massive influence on bringing rock and pop into living rooms across America.Of course, the conversation wouldn't be complete without honoring unforgettable voices like Luther Vandross and Sade, as well as country-rock trailblazer Gram Parsons, whose influence far outweighs his commercial success. And because this is Friends Talking Nerdy, there's a competitive twist: back in February, both hosts made their own Hall of Fame picks. Now, they revisit those predictions to see who nailed it—and who swung and missed like a drummer losing the beat mid-solo.Packed with hot takes, surprising insights, music history deep dives, and the kind of chemistry that makes every episode feel like you're hanging out with friends, this special is a must-listen for any music fan who's ever argued about what really belongs in the Rock Hall.As always, we wish to thank Christopher Lazarek for his wonderful theme song. Episode 8 Synopsis This episode delivers a vibrant, eclectic mix that bridges classic rock, reggae, hip-hop, electronic/chillout vibes, and Britpop/indie energy, framed by a groovy bass-driven bookend. It opens and closes with Bass Arch Banda funky, bass-heavy ensemble providing a soulful gospel intro to set a rhythmic, uplifting tone, and an outro to bring it full circle with that deep pocket feel. The playlist flows through timeless anthems and remixes: Bob Marley - Jamming (MC Lyte remix): A reggae classic re-energized with MC Lyte's rap verses, blending Bob's laid-back "we're jammin'" spirit with hip-hop flair from the late '90s Chant Down Babylon era remix—pure crossover positivity. Morcheeba - Moog Island: Chill trip-hop from the '90s, with dreamy synths, mellow beats, and Skye Edwards' smooth vocals creating a hazy, island escape vibe. David Bowie - Starman / Space Oddity: Iconic glam/space rock double-header—Starman's hopeful alien contact riff and Space Oddity's haunting astronaut tale, showcasing Bowie's storytelling genius. Chuck Berry - Mean Old World: Raw, pioneering rock 'n' roll blues from the legend, full of twangy guitar and storytelling grit. Rolling Stones - Miss You: Disco-infused late-'70s Stones groove, with that unforgettable bassline and Mick's yearning delivery. Gomez - "Las Vegas Dealer" from Liquid Skin) - Psychedelic Britrock with multi-vocal harmonies, laid-back grooves, and quirky energy. Oasis - Supersonic / Champagne Supernova: Britpop firepower—Supersonic's raw, fast-paced swagger and Champagne Supernova's epic, swirling psychedelic closer. Radiohead - Bones: Intense, angular rock from The Bends, with Thom Yorke's raw vocals and driving guitars capturing existential edge. Faithless - Insomnia: Epic '90s dance anthem—hypnotic house/trance build, Maxi Jazz's spoken-word insomnia confession, and pounding beats. Circa92 - 808 State - Pacific State: A modern rework/cover of the 1989 chillout classic, keeping the iconic soprano sax melody, rolling bass, and tropical exotica feel (Circa92's version adds contemporary house energy). Young MC - Knowhow (Stanton Warriors remix): Late-'80s hip-hop party track ("Know How") flipped into a breakbeat/electronic banger by Stanton Warriors—funky samples meet club-ready drops. The episode wraps with the Bass Arch Band outro, echoing the gospel-tinged bass groove to leave listeners in a reflective, rhythmic close. Overall, it's a nostalgic yet fresh journey through eras and genres perfect for a late-night drive, chill session, or high-energy mix that celebrates basslines, remixes, and timeless hooks.

✦ Creative digital technologies have no doubt expanded the art of animation for filmmakers, yet there's still nothing like the wow-factor of a fully handmade film. Director, writer, and animator Sebastian Soler crafted, placed, and shot every frame of his new Action-Thriller "Spanish Moss," a traditional stop-motion work he emphatically calls a "labor of love." The edge-of-your-seat adventure is filled with danger, romance, humor, thrills, and, of course, Legos. "Spanish Moss" screens followed by a Q&A with the creatives at the Tara Theatre on August 29th, and the filmmaker recently joined City Lights Collective co-host Kim Drobes to explain how 29 thousand handcrafted frames became a feature-length film. ✦ Today on "In Their Own Words," we highlight blues guitarist Buddy Red. This is where they tell us who they are, what they do, what they love, and a few things you might not see coming. What things? Who knows, there's only one way to find out. ✦ The Center for Puppetry Arts is launching a new beta program this fall to bring puppets into Atlanta-area classrooms. WABE arts reporter Summer Evans shares more. ✦ When you think of movie censorship, you might picture blacked-out scenes, controversial ratings, or headlines from the 1980s. But what if I told you that the roots of film censorship in America go back over a century—and that Atlanta played a starring role? We're diving into the world of film censorship- starting in 1897, Maine, and winding to 1960s Atlanta. We'll meet the people who shaped what Atlantans could and couldn't see on screen and uncover the strange, often absurd criteria that determined what was safe for public eyes. City Lights Collective member Victoria Lemos has more on this bit of Atlanta history. ✦ You know as well as I do that there is always a plethora of things to do in Atlanta, and we have earned the title of "The Cultural Capital of the South." Mike Jordan, senior editor at the AJC, and Sammie Purcell, associate editor at Rough Draft Atlanta, know this well, too. They join us weekly to share a few of their picks for your weekend entertainment. Today, their mix includes a gem show, a reminder to see Ain't No Mo, and the Atlanta Alt rock fest. ✦ Hip Hop is a male-dominated genre and industry. For a woman to make a name for herself and carve out a slice of the rap pie is no small feat. From Sha-Rock, The Sequence, Roxanne Shante, MC Lyte, Salt N Pepa, and Queen Latifah up to Megan Thee Stallion and Doechii, it's been quite the climb. Vocalist, M.C., Producer, mother, wife, and Lawyer, Stacy Epps has a name that has echoed through the halls of hip hop for more than two decades. She's shared the stage and booth with legends and has become a legend herself. Ahead of her new album, “FlowHeart,” which will be released tomorrow, August 22nd, she sat down with City Lights Collective Co-Host Jon Goode to discuss music, life, and her winding journey through both.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

“I told my mama, ‘I want to take my dad to school,' and she said, ‘Pick a man you like.' I said, ‘Richard Pryor.' She said, ‘All right, that's your daddy.'” That's how Spanky Hayes kicks off a raw, hilarious, and deeply Detroit story in his Detroit is Different interview. From dodging gang members in LA while wearing a bloody borrowed T-shirt, to his Cuban roots in Havana where “it's like being in 1984,” Spanky brings humor and heart. His reflections on Hollywood hit just as powerfully: “To be a star, you gotta be likable—people gotta want to be around you for 30 days straight on set.” He opens up about the ups and downs of holding deals, the pain of seeing his original crew's idea become Wild 'N Out without the proper credit, and how he helped build it from the ground up. “We didn't get the deal, but Nick did—and he kept his word.” Spanky also breaks down how the internet changed comedy forever: “It's not about talent anymore—it's about who's posting the most.” Despite the challenges, he's still committed to the craft: “I'm the Morpheus for Detroit comedians in LA. I've got the keys to the game.” With stories from backstage with MC Lyte to acting dreams sparked by Juice, Spanky blends street wisdom, comedic hustle, and cultural commentary in a way only a Detroiter can. MC Lyte is a legendary MC who was a star in the 80s. She's now the star of a sitcom called Partners In Rhyme on ALLBLK. It was awesome to talk to her about hiphop back in the day and the show which is loosely based on her life. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
