From the spark of curiosity ignited in Detroit to the cultural epicenter of Atlanta, Darralynn Hutson has been scripting stories since “my first article was written in 1990 in the 1900s,” she jokes, weaving words with love and purpose across decades. “I've been writing for over 25 years on Black culture. I love it.” And that passion first bloomed when a young Darralynn immersed herself in magazines like The Source, saying, “How else can you find out about who's the king of New York hip hop?” Her storytelling foundation was deeply personal too—growing up as an only child, “my joy, my passion, my excitement came from outside my house,” and writing became a tool to explore, escape, and express. She fondly recalls imagining “Twilight Zone episodes from a Black perspective,” like one where a family's rat takes over household responsibilities, embodying her early creative genius. That creative fire took her from Cass Tech to Spelman, where “Detroit demanded respect” and the AUC campus became its own cultural ecosystem. “We were developing it,” she says of Atlanta's evolution into a Black cultural mecca, remembering moments like OutKast performing in “hole in the wall concerts” and Spike Lee recruiting students for School Daze. Post-college, it was another Spelman sister, Sheila Brown of Upscale Magazine, who turned Darralynn's passion into profession, teaching her how “to use a mouse, how to interview, how to research,” and most importantly, how to trust her voice. Now an international journalist and TV/film writer, she honors that journey by capturing not only celebrity stories but also deeply personal ones, like writing obituaries for over 27 family members—a responsibility she holds sacred. “Everybody has a role to play,” she says, “I'm the writer of the family.” Whether it's penning features for Essence, profiling unsung icons, or celebrating Detroit's soul, Darralynn's pen remains her passport and purpose. “Writing was always something I did for fun. It was a passion. I didn't know it could be a profession.” Lucky for us, she found a way to turn her passion into pages that speak to our culture, our past, and our power. Spike Lee shoots for the moon with his own college musical (kinda) School Daze! Lawrence Fishburne is one of those college kids whose mind is open to the injustices of the world and wraps himself in that blanket. Giancarlo Esposito is a frat king, lining up his future. You'd think that would be just fine, everyone is doing their thing, but nope. One of us experiences an awakening while watching this. Another one gloms onto the silliness of college. But hey, at least there's another super ugly sexual situation to bring us together, right?!?! Ooof, the 80s, am I right? Tune in, rate, review, whatever ya wanna do.

On the latest episode of A Conversation with Host Floyd Marshall Jr., filmmakers and enthusiasts were treated to an inspiring discussion with Bobby Yan, an eight-time Emmy Award-winning director, writer, and visual effects artist. Yan's career, which began with humble beginnings in the world of music videos, has flourished into a multifaceted one that touches nearly every corner of the entertainment industry. With his unique storytelling approach and undeniable talent, Yan offers invaluable insights for both aspiring and independent filmmakers alike. From Hollis, Queens to Hollywood Raised in Hollis, Queens, New York, Bobby Yan's early experiences were steeped in the rich cultural landscape of hip hop. In the podcast, Yan shares how growing up in this neighborhood during the rise of legendary hip hop group Run DMC significantly influenced his creative voice. He later moved to New Orleans for school, where the city's vibrant music scene and diverse cultures expanded his artistic perspective. Yan's journey highlights the powerful impact of one's environment on creative development, a reminder for filmmakers to draw inspiration from their surroundings and personal experiences. Yan's passion for filmmaking was solidified after watching influential films such as School Daze by Spike Lee and Straight Out of Brooklyn by Matty Rich. These experiences helped Yan realize the potential of storytelling through film, particularly in representing the lives and struggles of marginalized communities. The Power of Storytelling and Representation During the interview, Yan spoke about the importance of diversity and representation both in front of and behind the camera. As an Asian American filmmaker working predominantly on African American content, Yan emphasized the need for filmmakers to authentically represent the stories of all communities. He believes that storytelling serves as a tool for healing and cultural exchange, allowing audiences to connect with narratives they might otherwise not encounter. Yan is especially passionate about using his platform to shine a light on underrepresented voices in the film industry. He encourages filmmakers to focus on creating work that is deeply personal yet universally relatable, and to remain committed to the craft of storytelling, no matter the challenges they may face. The Importance of Mentorship and Community Yan shared how mentorship has played a critical role in his career, particularly his relationship with legendary director Michael Schultz. Learning from industry veterans has shaped his directing approach, especially in how he manages the collaborative atmosphere on set. He advises young filmmakers to not only hone their technical skills but also cultivate leadership qualities that inspire and uplift their cast and crew. For independent filmmakers, Yan stressed the value of community. Whether through internships, collaborations, or simply networking with like-minded creatives, building a strong support system is key to thriving in the competitive world of filmmaking. What's Next for Bobby Yan? As he continues to break new ground, Bobby Yan remains as driven as ever. He is currently working on several high-profile projects, including a feature film biopic on 1970s music icon and AIDS activist Sylvester, as well as a documentary about the legendary NYC concert venue, “Sounds of Brazil,” narrated by Julian Lennon. Final Thoughts Bobby Yan's interview is a must-watch for filmmakers looking to deepen their craft and expand their understanding of storytelling. His journey, filled with lessons on persistence, authenticity, and the power of representation, serves as an inspiration to creatives at every stage of their career. ============= Submit Your Film to Our Film Collective: ifapfilmcollective.com --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/aconversationwithfm/support

Donna Reed and Eric Seemann are both professional real estate agents. Donna lives and works in Tucson Arizona with Keller Williams Southern Arizona while Eric lives and works in San Antonio Texas with Keller Williams Heritage. They are also siblings, and they grew up in a small Northwest Ohio village of Lindsey. Their idyllic small-town childhood laid the foundation for what would become the structure of their lives and careers in real estate. We hope you will join us as we reminisce, reflect, and correlate how our childhood and life in rural Ohio still impacts our dealings with our clients today. As we acknowledge and celebrate Spring Break 2024 in our hometown school district we fondly talk about ALL of the buildings and structures in which we went to school. Now razed, demolished and part of our distant memories along with those of our classmates. No dramatic implossions or farewell parties, just gone as they were deemed to be too old and outdated. What does that say about us? Does the same thing happen in our thriving, growing and vibrant cities where we now reside? Find out now. In this episode, Angel and I discuss our experiences with the public school system. Particularly, truancy, early start times, the impact of sleep deprivation on growing children (especially teens). Our approach is one that puts love at the helm and takes into consideration our children's self-agency. This episode won't be for everyone, but if you are a parent struggling with the structure of the school system, this one might be for you. It's ok to stand for something different. The blanket approach for public schooling does not work for everyone. It's so important to know your parental rights and your child's rights if you're wanting to try something different. Angel Pricer is an alchemical artist and co-creator of Full Color Living, a unique approach to building resilience, emotional expression, and healing. https://www.fullcolorliving.orgThanks for tuning in to All the Things ☺️

Season 3, of @undunnwithashleydunn kicks off with recent Emmy-winning actress, writer and director Jasmine Guy. Jasmine rose to fame in the 80's with her first tv appearance in Fame, from there she appeared in several tv and film projects including School Daze. But we fell in LOVE with Jasmine when she burst onto our screens as southern Belle Whitley Gilbert at the factious Hillman College. Since then Jasmine has gone on to continue to have a successful career spanning over 4 decades. In this episode, Jasmine shares how she currently feeling after her long awaited Emmy win, we go back and talk the early days of fame, and how she auditioned several times before landing the coveted role of “Whitley”. We also discuss a possible reimagining of the 90's hit show and what she's up to next. One things for sure, she's still beautiful, booked and busy. I'm just glad I was able to have some of her time. I hope you enjoy this episode! Give us a follow: IG: @iamashleydunn IG: @undunnwithashleydunn TikTok: @iamashleykdunn

It's become clear to many Americans that our educational system is in complete collapse (thanks to the Left). Dennis asks callers how they deal with it. Callers have stories. Dennis continues the same theme as last hour. What has college and covid/lockdowns done to your kids? Siaka Massaquoi, actor and political activist. He was just arrested for being at the Capitol on Jan 6. Like so many other Jan6ers, his story is appalling. Thanks for listening to the Daily Dennis Prager Podcast. For over three decades, legendary costume designer Ruth E. Carter has created the looks of our most era-defining films. Today, we're celebrating those pieces chronicled in her new book, The Art of Ruth E. Carter: Costuming Black History and the Afrofuture. At the top, we discuss the current labor movement in Hollywood (5:03), Carter's upbringing in Massachusetts (8:50), and a formative Langston Hughes poem (12:56). Then, she reflects on her early years in Los Angeles (19:45), the night she met a lifelong collaborator in director Spike Lee (21:52), and the process of making School Daze (25:49), Do the Right Thing (29:06), and Malcolm X (37:42). On the back-half, Carter describes her innovative work on the Black Panther films (50:40), which earned her two Academy Awards (54:33), the enduring influence of her mother, Mabel Carter (1:03:10), and how she continues to tell the story of the Black experience through costume design (1:04:35).See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The case for sending your kid to a public school is getting weaker and weaker as the schools continue to push their woke nonsense on students. The case for homeschooling, in contrast, is getting stronger and stronger. Callers weigh in. If you can't be mind-directed, then all advice is useless. Yes, you can talk yourself into a happier state of mind. Issues raised include: you never mention humor in your happiness book or hour; why is no one counteracting the pro-choice agenda; the lust in the heart argument from Matthew 5, you lie regarding Pragertopia, that it is commercial free; do you understand the New Testament DOES NOT REQUIRE a Sabbath; you say sports is the only place merit lives; the devolution of the dress code at work. Thanks for listening to the Daily Dennis Prager Podcast.
