Dr. Sherri Garrett, a native of Cedartown, GA, grew up as an Army brat. She is the daughter of the late Sgt. Lloyd Garrett and the late Clara Garrett.After graduation from Clark College in 1976, Sherri began her career as a teacher at Cedartown High School, Polk County, Georgia. During that time, she earned a Masters of Education degree in Curriculum /Supervision from the University of West Georgia. Following her stint at Cedartown High she moved to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and taught English for 7 years at Boyd Anderson High School. In 1986, she was called back to Polk County, GA to serve as the school district's elementary curriculum director and, simultaneously, serve as an interim elementary principal.In 1988, a new journey led her to various administrative positions with McGraw-Hill Publishing and McDougal-Littell Publishing Companies. Her 20 year affiliation with these textbook publishing companies bolstered her love of books and reading.After her retirement from textbook publishing Sherri decided to go back to school to pursue a doctorate at the University of Georgia. While pursuing her degree, she continued to teach as an assistant professor at Brenau University in Gainesville, Ga., and as a literacy coach for the two middle schools in Polk County. In 2015 she was awarded a PhD in Language and Literacy. Also in 2015 Sherri embarked on her final leg of employment as a certified English teacher taking a position at Lithia Springs High School in Douglas County. The Girl Scouts have always held a special place in Elicia Pegues Spearman's life. “My mother was a Girl Scout Brownie when she was growing up,” Pegues Spearman told the CBIA BizCast. “I was a Brownie here in Connecticut, and my daughter was a Girl Scout, and I was a coach, troop leader.” Despite that history, Pegues Spearman never imagined leading Girl Scouts of Connecticut. “I've enjoyed my career as a lawyer,” she said. “I've had a really good career.” Her career included legal counsel and HR roles at the State of Connecticut, the FBI, Aetna, Hubbell Incorporated, General Dynamics Electric Boat, and Quinnipiac University. She reconnected with Girl Scouts in 2022 when she received a Breakfast Badge, an award honoring woman for community contributions. She stayed in touch with the then-CEO and, in 2024, became CEO herself. “The Girl Scouts is a lot of fun,” she said about making the career shift. “I don't like to be bored.” While cookies often come to mind when you think of the Girl Scouts—it's the organization's biggest initiative teaching entrepreneurship, customer service, and money management—the organization's purpose runs deeper. “We are more than cookies, camps and badges,” Pegues Spearman said. “Our whole mission is to build girls of confidence, character, and courage. “To do that, we have many programs and skill building that build leadership development that our girls are involved in.” Pegues Spearman said the Girl Scouts of Connecticut focus on outdoor skills, life skills, business skills, and STEAM education. Pegues Spearman highlighted Camp Sikorsky and Camp CEO as examples of programs that give girls experiential learning opportunities. As the leader of a nonprofit, Pegues Spearman said being successful means navigating challenges. “I think the biggest challenge is obviously resources. We're a nonprofit. We have tight budgets, and we depend on volunteers,” she said. Pegues Spearman credits her team of paid employees and volunteers for the success of the organization. “My staff loves our mission, and we work every day with that mission in mind,” she said. “It's easy when you're supporting youth.” As part of its mission, the Girl Scouts of Connecticut is working to expand access for girls of all abilities and backgrounds, with a special focus on underserved communities. “We want all girls of all abilities to be able to access Girl Scouts,” she said. In addition to her role with the Girl Scouts, Pegues Spearman serves as the North Atlantic Regional Director of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. The sorority is the oldest Greek-letter organization established by African American college-educated women. What are some of the bias and health equity implications for limb amputations?In this series on healthcare and social disparities, Dr. Jill Wener, a board-certified Internal Medicine specialist, anti-racism educator, meditation expert, and tapping practitioner, interviews experts and gives her own insights into multiple fields relating to social justice and anti-racism. In this episode, Jill interviews Dr. Alyson Myers, a professor and endocrinologist. They discuss Dr. Myers' goal to lower the high rate of amputations of Black and Brown persons with diabetes by using multidisciplinary care and limb salvage techniques. They also discuss risk factors, including social determinants of health, for diabetic foot ulcers and amputee and leg amputations.Dr. Alyson Myers is a Full Professor for the Department of Medicine at Montefiore Einstein in the Bronx. She also is an honorary professor at Universidad Central del Caribe in Bayamon, Puerto Rico. Lewis, Esq. was born and raised in Missouri City, Texas.   Double majoring in Political Science and English, Orjanel graduated summa cum laude in 2008 from Tuskegee University in Tuskegee, Alabama.  Entering the historic Tuskegee University in the fall of 2004, Orjanel realized that it would behoove her to take advantage of all that the “pride of the swift growing south” had to offer! She participated in several organizations including Student Government Association where she served as Vice President during her Senior year, Texas Club serving as President for two years, President of the Student Senate, and a member of the Spanish Club. Ms. Lewis received several awards while studying at Tuskegee including the President Benjamin F. Payton Distinguished Student Award, Terrance D. Smith Student Leader Award, and Pi Sigma Alpha and Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Societies.Upon graduation from Tuskegee, Orjanel attended and graduated from Tulane University School of Law with a Juris Doctorate and a Certificate of Maritime Law.  Orjanel served as an Associate Attorney for nearly four years at a small boutique firm located in Houston, Texas practicing in various areas of civil litigation including but not limited to consumer, estate, personal injury and business.  Ms. Lewis was previously promoted to Policy Advisor, after serving as in-house counsel in the litigation department, for a consumer debt buyer company, while simultaneously serving as a member of the adjunct faculty of Houston Community College teaching Civil Litigation I and II, Wills and Probate Administration, Law Office Management and Contracts. Savoy is the Interim Chairperson and Assistant Professor in the Department of Health Sciences. Her scholarship examines the complex interplay between health disparities, behavioral factors, and safety outcomes among underserved populations. Her research develops culturally informed interventions that target social determinants of health across developmental stages, with particular attention to vulnerable groups experiencing systemic inequities. Dr. Savoy's academic endeavors are focused on enhancing health outcomes for both urban and rural communities, particularly for marginalized and underrepresented populations. She is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and has been instrumental in leading health initiatives that promote equitable access to healthcare and foster healthier communities.⁠ Dr. Tenyo Pearl is the Campus Director for the Nonprofit Leadership Alliance. With over 20 years of experience in higher education, Dr. Pearl is passionate about preparing the next generation of nonprofit leaders, change agents, and advocates. Committed to excellence in scholarship, Thompson received her bachelor of arts in political economics from the University of California, Berkeley, and a master of divinity from Howard University School of Divinity in Washington, DC. While at Howard, she received the Nannie Helen Burroughs Award for Academic Excellence and the Henry G. Maynard Award for Excellence in Preaching and Ministry. Believing in the importance of both orthodoxy and orthopraxy, Thompson continued her studies at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California, where she was awarded the doctor of ministry degree in African American church leadership. She is a member of the NAACP and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. Her activism and leadership have been recognized by various chapters honouring her with the Community Excellence Award and as Distinguished Woman of the Year. Among other honours, Thompson has been inducted into the distinguished Morehouse College Martin Luther King Jr. Board of Preachers. Thompson is a gifted preacher, administrator, and published author travelling and ministering extensively nationally and internationally, often in arenas previously unchartered by women. Two-time Emmy and Three-time NAACP Image Award-winning, television Executive Producer Rushion McDonald, interview Andrienne Johnson.  She understands the need for women to have opportunities. She married at 17 because of her pregnancy and was divorced by age 20. Her single motherhood and belief in God taught her perseverance. Adrienne launched Wo Ye Bra in 2017 to keep girls in school who would otherwise stay home because they lack access to sanitary supplies during their periods. To date, she has created over 300 women entrepreneurs in West Africa. Rev. Dr. Johnson is a graduate of the University of Louisville School of Business, credentials include Certificate of Theology from the Interdenominational Theological Center (ITC), Harvard Medical School Coaching in Leadership and Healthcare, and a graduate of the David Satcher Leadership Institute at Morehouse School of Medicine.
