Debt tends to get treated as either a financial tool or a financial trap. The reality is more complicated. Borrowing can help someone buy a home, expand a business, or acquire an income-producing asset, but the same leverage can become a burden when the payment strains cash flow. The important distinction is not simply whether debt exists. It is whether the debt improves your financial position without exposing you to more risk than you can reasonably manage. In this episode of A Wiser Retirement® Podcast, Casey Smith and Financial Advisor Michaela Dowdy, CFP®, go over the difference between productive debt and expensive financial mistakes. They examine all variations of debt while asking, What are you actually getting in exchange for taking on the debt?Related Podcast Episodes: Ep 298. “Elect exiles” is not a cute phrase, it's a diagnosis. We open 1 Peter with fresh eyes and realize Peter starts his letter to suffering Christians by telling them something most of us resist: you're scattered on purpose. If you've ever looked at your life and thought, why am I here, why is this hard, and did God forget me, Peter's first two verses give a gritty, hope-filled framework that can actually hold the weight of real pain.We unpack 1 Peter 1:1-2 and see the Trinity right on the surface: the Father's foreknowledge, the Spirit's sanctifying work, and obedience to Jesus Christ under the sprinkling of His blood. Then we chase the Bible's “seed” storyline into the word diaspora, not just “people scattered,” but seed spread across the earth for multiplication. That leads straight into identity: Christians as aliens and foreigners, planted in foreign soil to take root, grow, and bear fruit even in hostile environments. We also challenge modern definitions of grace, peace, and blessing. Peace is not just mental serenity; it's strength for obedience when suffering presses in. The Holy Spirit's filling is not meant to stop at spiritual experiences, but to empower mission, evangelism, and costly faithfulness. If you're tired, disoriented, or tempted to build your life around comfort, this conversation will push you and steady you at the same time.Subscribe for more Bible-driven conversations, share this with a friend who feels scattered, and leave a review with the hardest part of obedience you're facing right now.Send us Fan MailSupport the show
Everybody knows the whale story. Almost nobody wrestles with the real offense of Jonah: God's mercy lands on the people Jonah cannot stand, and it exposes how quickly religious comfort can turn into spiritual blindness. We sit down and talk through why Jonah is “incredibly well known, almost never understood,” and why that matters for Christians who want more than nursery-room faith. We dig into the historicity of Jonah and why Jesus calls his own death and resurrection “the sign of Jonah.” That takes us into the language of Sheol, the three days in the deep, and the bigger gospel-shaped point: Jonah isn't the hero, he's the runner, and the story keeps forcing him to face the God he's trying to avoid. Along the way we look at the irony of pagans who fear God while the prophet sleeps, and how that still shows up in the church when we want grace for ourselves but judgment for our enemies. From there, we push into the practical punch of the book: divine sovereignty and human choice, evangelism that treats people as people, and the call to “invade darkness” the way Christ does in the incarnation. Jonah becomes a mirror that asks whether our Christianity is a safe identity or a mission that moves us, even when it costs us comfort. If this challenged you, subscribe, share it with a friend, and leave a review so more people can find it. What's one place you know you've been running, and what would obedience look like this week?Send us Fan MailSupport the show

Send us a textCharlie Kirk's assassination has become a watershed moment for Christians in America. What does it mean when standing for biblical truth puts a target on your back? In this powerful conversation, Justin sits down with Kaleb, a young Christian brother, to unpack the spiritual dimensions of Kirk's martyrdom and what it means for believers everywhere.Kaleb shares his moving experience visiting the memorial site where Kirk was shot, describing the quiet reverence of strangers gathering at midnight to pay respects. The conversation then turns to Kaleb's own journey of faith-based activism – from his arrest and court battle for wearing a "Jesus Loves You" shirt at a Pride event to his ministry at abortion clinics. His story reveals both the cost and the profound spiritual growth that comes from standing firm in hostile environments. The parallels between modern-day persecution and biblical martyrs like Stephen become unmistakable as they examine how speaking truth has always provoked violent opposition throughout history. "They didn't kill Jesus because he healed people," Justin notes. "They killed him because he told them the truth."This episode delivers a challenging wake-up call to comfortable Christianity. As churches nationwide see attendance surge following Kirk's death, a spiritual awakening may be stirring – but will believers answer the call to greater boldness? Kaleb offers practical guidance for those taking their first steps into cultural engagement, emphasizing community, preparation, and the right heart posture.Whether you're already engaged in the cultural battle or feeling God's nudge toward greater courage, this conversation will equip you to turn righteous anger into purposeful action. The spiritual warfare is real – the only question is whether you'll be stationed on the frontlines or sitting on the sidelines.Ready to step into greater boldness?
