In this episode, we feature an excerpt of an interview with the late Margaret Adams Harris (1916–2014) who worked as a prominent Guilford County attorney. Throughout her career, Harris was dedicated to public service. Most notably, she served on the Duke University board of trustees and worked to implement Title IX of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, and served as chair of the Greensboro City Board of Education during desegregation. In the interview, Harris shares about attending college and law school immediately following the Great Depression, having former Chief Justice Susie Sharp as a contemporary, and balancing life as a mother and attorney. "You're making a big commitment when you determine to be a lawyer and it becomes a major part of your life, but shouldn't be all of your life," said Harris on the podcast. "You still have your family and your community to which you still have a responsibility. I think you need to face this fact and make sacrifices where necessary."This interview was conducted by former Executive Director of the Chief Justice's Commission on Professionalism Mel Wright for the Commission's Historical Video Series. A full version of the interview can be found on the NCcourts Youtube channel.

30 years ago this year, a small independent film, by a first time director, and an unknown cast, hit our screens. That film was Strictly Ballroom. And so, for our final episode of Season 2 of Talking Pointes, I'm speaking with the legendary Paul Mercurio. Paul was born in Swan Hill in regional Victoria and started dancing after he saw his elder sister in a local dance class. With dad off the scene early, the family moved to Perth where Paul continued to train at the John Curtin Senior High School as it was known then, before, at 18, being accepted in the Australian Ballet School in Melbourne. But in a rebel move, he joined Sydney Dance Company before graduating, it was the golden era of Graeme Murphy's directorship. It was a position he held for ten years, as a principal dancer, muse and choreographer. During his later years Sydney Dance Company, Paul received a call from an unknown director called Baz Lurhmann who asked him to help choreograph on a dance film. It was a call that changed his life. In this wonderfully honest interview, Paul talks about his early years in dance, his “angry man” years as he calls them—where he wrote poetry, smoked weed, and rode motorbikes. We also talk about how Strictly Ballroom came to be, the behind the scene, and how the film changed his life. Finally we talk new careers, raising a family, and his plans for making a more inclusive community in his local area.Paul and I recorded remotely, with Paul dialling in from Melbourne on the land of the Kulin people. Paul's episode was produced in Sydney on the land of the Gadigal People of the Eora Nation, to whom we pay our greatest respects. Welcome to episode 31. Today is a very special gathering of fellow iLs instructors to honour the life of Ron Minson, M.D. whose life work impacted so many. iLs systems changed lives from the bottom up. Dr Ron, as we call him, received his medical degree from UCLA School of Medicine and is board-certified in Psychiatry and Neurology. His general medical background includes serving as a family physician and health center Medical Director and clinical psychiatrist. Dr. Minson served as Chief of Psychiatry for Presbyterian Medical Center and Director of Behavioral Sciences at Mercy Hospital in Denver. However, his life took a radical new pathway when he witnessed the successful treatment of his daughter for severe depression and dyslexia from a sound therapy program. He subsequently chose to devote his life to learning about the power of filtred sound in clinical application; developed programs, and taught practitioners so more people could heal from sound and bone conduction therapy. He developed Dynamic Listening Systems (DLS), which he integrated into his psychiatric practice and later, in 2007, iLs was launched to provide a more affordable and multisensory therapy- which is sound combined with visual, vestibular and movement, that could be used in homes and schools as well as therapy clinics.Dr Minson worked closely with his wife, Kate Minson. Some words from Kate... “In the time I have been an eye-witness to Dr. Minson's trajectory in the field of psychoacoustics, the branch of psychology concerned with sound and its physiological effects, I have noted a few common themes that run through his professional life story: a willingness to go boldly into uncharted territory, an unquenchable thirst for knowledge and an equally passionate desire to help people. Please enjoy my conversation with Fellow-iLs trainers, Doreen Hunt; Ann Brownstone; Dillen Hartley and Marianne Judd, all esteemed clinicians, as we honour the memory and work of Dr Minson, sharing his knowledge and the powerful impact of the iLs and Pro system with clients. You will sense the gratitude we all feel to have been a part of the iLs family and the privilege it was to be able to teach the work. Some key points- listen in for the details and more... iLs is a multisensory program incorporating movement with filtered music and bone conduction Dr Ron and Kate- knowledge way before their time Power of breath and voice with breath- impact on the nervous systemSound as healingStudy with Dr TomatisThe entire body as a vesicle for sound. iLs foundation in neuroscience and neurodevelopmentiLs connecting the sensory-motor systeminter-uterine listeningfiltered mothers voicePro System- individualized program with higher filtered music and bone conductionDr Ron's legacy- integrating air and bone conduction in a single program; the ear-to-brain connection; bottom-up integration to build a foundation for integrationLeadership through care- Kate and Dr RonI hope you all enjoyed this conversation. The speaker encourages his listeners to move forward by living their Christian lives victoriously every day. He emphasizes the importance of focusing on the spiritual benefits of a life in service to Christ versus worldly distractions. The speaker then pointed out that each believer will face three notable enemies: sin, Satan, and one's self. Detaching from the program of self is stressed with a reminder that even believers sometimes forget their own fallibility. Paul's teaching in Galatians about living in the self versus living in Christ was cited to underscore the importance of inner transformation. The speaker also emphasizes the virtues of steadfastness, being unmovable, and continuously abounding in the work of the Lord, quoting 1 Corinthians 15. He ends by reiterating that believers can and should live a victorious life, promising to delve deeper into this topic in his next devotion. 00:00 Introduction and Greetings 00:13 The Mansion in Glory 01:08 The Victory in Jesus 02:03 Living the Christian Life in Victory 02:18 The Enemies of Victory: Sin, Satan, and Self 03:37 The Crucifixion of Self 04:01 The Life Lived in Christ 04:41 The Challenge of Living a Victorious Life 05:20 The Power of God's Forgiveness 06:05 Staying Steadfast in Faith 07:31 The Struggle of Living a Victorious Life 08:47 The Power of Believing in God's Word 09:47 Closing Prayer and Farewell --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/gnbc/message

Years ago, we decided to one day try living abroad for at least a year. We always loved traveling and also always felt that we never had enough time to truly experience a place beyond the superficial. I wanted to stay for a while, learn the language, and slowly morph into a new life mode. But now I'm starting to question the wisdom of this decision. Is living abroad a bad idea?
