Good morning, Radiant! Mike Young is teaching today. Continuing "Summer of Wisdom" in Proverbs: wisdom is rooted in fear of the Lord, fueled by a teachable spirit, and avoiding foolishness. Today: the incredible power of our words.Scripture References: Proverbs 18:21, Proverbs (various), Matthew 12:33-37, James 3, Romans 8:9-11, Romans 10:9-10, Proverbs 6:16-19, Proverbs 11:13, Proverbs 16:28, Proverbs 12:18, Proverbs 15:1, Proverbs 28:23, Proverbs 16:24, Proverbs 25:11, Proverbs 15:4, Proverbs 10:19, Proverbs 17:28Key Points:Words: Weapon & Divine Reflection:Proverbs 18:21: "Death and life are in the power of the tongue."Our words, unique to humans, reflect God's image. He spoke creation; we wield similar power.Every word carries spiritual weight: fostering flourishing or destruction. Reckless speech yields bad "fruit"; Spirit-led words bring peace.Words' Source (Matthew 12):Jesus: "Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks." (Matt 12:34). Words perfectly mirror our heart.Bitter hearts speak cutting words; Spirit-filled hearts speak grace.Jesus warns: "Account for every careless word" (Matt 12:36).Jesus' "harsh" words (e.g., "brood of vipers") were perfectly aimed to expose hypocrisy, unlike our own. He perfectly tamed His tongue.Proverbs on Speech: Death-Bringing:Lying (Prov 12:22): Erodes trust.Gossip/Slander (Prov 11:13): Destroys relationships.Hasty (Prov 29:20): Causes irreversible damage.Contentious (Prov 15:1): Escalates conflict.Flattery (Prov 28:23): Insincere praise entraps.Proverbs on Speech: Life-Giving:Truthful (Prov 12:19): Established forever.Gracious (Prov 16:24): "Like honeycomb, sweetness to the soul."Well-timed (Prov 25:11): Precious, beautiful.Comforting/Gentle (Prov 15:4): Bring healing; "a gentle tongue is a tree of life."Restraint (Prov 17:28): "Even a fool who keeps silent is considered wise." Silence can be powerful.Words Shape Eternity:We can't perfectly tame our tongues; only Jesus did. He lives in us!Rom 10:9-10: mouth confession saves. Rom 8:9-11: Spirit in us gives life.God gives us words to proclaim the Gospel, bringing others from death to life. More than avoiding negative speech, actively bringing God's Kingdom. Conclusion:Our words hold incredible power. We're imperfect, but Jesus, the living Word, perfectly tamed His tongue to bring life, even through death. We now partake in His "fruit."Call to Action:At the table, confess foolishness/death-bringing words. Ask God for His ways. Then, stop talking and listen for His voice. Let the Holy Spirit transform your mouth to proclaim good news and bring life. Support the show*Summaries and transcripts are generated using AI. Please notify us if you find any errors.

Polarized Discourse Erodes Democratic Engagement: Addressing the Divisive Rhetoric of Right-Wing Commentators

Tucker Carlson - Audio Biography

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 31, 2024 4:02

In recent years, political discourse in the United States has become increasingly polarized, with both sides of the aisle often engaging in heated debates that can sometimes escalate into outright vitriol. This phenomenon has been particularly magnified by the influence of media personalities who do not shy away from provocative and polarizing commentary. Among these figures, right-wing commentators Tucker Carlson and Glenn Beck stand out for their significant impact on the tone and direction of political conversation across the country. The growing concern over the nature of political discourse is shared by many, including figures like Curran, who laments the aggressive rhetoric employed by personalities such as Carlson and Beck. These commentators have cultivated a style that often emphasizes division, presenting political issues in stark, us-versus-them terms. This approach has resonated with large sections of the American public, earning them substantial followings, but has also contributed to widening the gap between opposing political viewpoints.Britton echoes this sentiment, indicating that the level of vitriol present in today's political conversations is alarming. The issue is not merely the existence of strong opinions or passionate debate; these are long-standing features of democratic discourse. Rather, it's the manner in which these opinions are presented and argued, often devoid of respect for differing viewpoints and sometimes crossing into personal attacks, that raises concern. The impact of such vitriolic political discourse is profound. It has the potential to undermine the very foundations of democratic engagement by discouraging meaningful dialogue and compromise. When political opponents are demonized, it becomes exceedingly difficult to find common ground or work together to address the complex challenges facing society. Instead of debates that could lead to synthesized solutions, the public sphere becomes an arena for conflict, where the goal is to defeat the other side rather than to collaborate for the common good. Moreover, the approach taken by commentators like Carlson and Beck can contribute to the radicalization of political views. Constant exposure to one-sided arguments that paint the other side as not just wrong, but as a threat to the nation, can lead individuals down a path of increasing extremism. This situation is dangerous not only for the fabric of democracy but for the safety and unity of society as a whole. In response to these challenges, there are calls from various quarters for a return to a more respectful and constructive political dialogue. This would involve media personalities, politicians, and the public engaging in discussions that prioritize facts, acknowledge complexity, and respect the humanity and good intentions of those with differing views. Achieving such a shift is no small task, given the entrenched nature of current practices and the economic incentives that drive sensationalist media. However, for the sake of democracy and the well-being of society, it's an endeavor worth pursuing. As the nation grapples with numerous challenges, from economic hardship to social justice issues, the need for a more productive political discourse has never been more apparent. In moving forward, the hope is that influential voices within the media landscape can lead by example, fostering discussions that bridge divides rather than deepen them. In doing so, they would not only contribute to healing the political rifts that have emerged but also help in steering the country towards a more united and constructive future.

‘Erodes the public trust': Elected officials react to TDSB field trip rally with anti-Israel chants

Ontario Premier Doug Ford has blasted the Toronto District School Board for allowing some teachers to “indoctrinate” students with anti-Israel chants during a recent field trip that was ostensibly a learning event about justice for Canada's Indigenous people. :"It's disgusting," Ford told reporters on Monday. Meanwhile, Ford's education minister, Jill Dunlop, also slammed what she called “activist” public school teachers, who she said compromised student safety and breached the trust of the parents who had signed permission forms. The event in question involved 15 public schools, which brought students to the annual Grassy Narrows River Run on Sept. 18. The rally and march spreads awareness about the First Nation community in remote Northwestern Ontario that has spent decades fighting for justice after a local factory poisoned their water system with mercury. But parents have reported that a few teachers with a pro-Palestine agenda used the event to spread their own message about a totally separate issue: the Middle East conflict. In videos posted online, they can be seen using a megaphone to lead their students in chanting anti-Israel slogans; some participants in the event are wearing keffiyehs, and carrying banners calling for "From Wabigoon (the lake near Grassy Narrows) to the Dead Sea, We will all be free." Shelley Laskin is a school board trustee who represents the heavily Jewish Ward 8 (Eglinton-Lawrence and Toronto-St. Paul's). Laskin joins The CJN Daily to explain why she demanded a special public school board meeting be held this Wednesday, Sept. 25, to look into the incident that “erodes the public trust” in Canada's largest school board. In 2021, Haiti's president was assasinated, and since this event, gangs have used this power vaccum to seize power, delegitimize the unelected leader in power, polarize the population, wreck havoc on civil society, and hold a mirror up to the corrupt politics of the country. As foreign governments try to find solutions to the issue, policing has been replaced with mob violence and vigilantism. Have you ever said something to your wife or partner with the intention of making them feel bad, to hurt their feelings? Do you feel like she doesn't respect your opinion or that your feelings are not as important as hers are? In this episode I discuss how we show contempt within our romantic relationships, how that feels, the damaging effect it has on the relationship and how you can stop it.In our coaching, we help men get a powerful new mindset that empowers you to give, love and connect more deeply because you're finally doing that within yourself first. The contemporary white-collar employee is dependent upon a boss for his livelihood, and must therefore be deferential, diplomatic, and often less than forthright about what he thinks. It is not hard to see which sex is better at this sort of behavior. Women are cunning and play their cards close to their chest: an evolutionary adaptation left over from the days when their survival and reproductive success depended on an ability to manipulate males physically stronger than themselves. Today, it makes them naturals at office politics.  Most men find the atmosphere of the modern workplace stifling and tedious, and women themselves are seldom attracted to the sort of docile, gelded drudges that manage to succeed in it. But men cannot find refuge at home either, because the women who might have made homes for them are out competing against them in the activities of the broader society.

According to the May Werthan Shayne Chair of Public Policy and Social Science at Vanderbilt University - Larry Bartels a seeming explosion of support for right-wing populist parties has triggered widespread fears that liberal democracy is facing its worst crisis since the 1930s. In his latest book Democracy Erodes from the Top - Bartels suggest that the real crisis stems not from an increasingly populist public but from political leaders who exploit or mismanage the chronic vulnerabilities of democracy. Europe's most sobering examples of democratic backsliding―in Hungary and Poland―occurred not because voters wanted authoritarianism but because conventional conservative parties, once elected, seized opportunities to entrench themselves in power. Join us when author Larry M Bartels examines the inadequacy of conventional bottom-up interpretations of Europe's political crisis, on this installment of Leonard Lopate at Large.

Gamaldi comments that Biden's comments are, “not helpful.” Saying, Biden's speech is “just inflammatory rhetoric set to get an emotional response from the audience, that is not based in fact.” The Vice President of the largest police union in the United States goes on to explain that, “we know that officers use force to stop a threat, we are not out here purposely trying to use deadly force every single time as [Biden] put it in that speech, and it is extremely harmful to us. It erodes the trust that we're trying to build with our communities when you make comments like that.” Commenting, “and here's another thing that really upsets every single police officer in this country, is that what we're really asking the President to do, is how about you condemn the violence against law enforcement, the historic violence we're seeing, how about you just put out a statement saying it's wrong to shoot a police officer, it's wrong to assault a police officer. It is an extremely low bar to just ask to put out a statement condemning historic violence against law enforcement, and the White House just refuses to do it.”See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

No real indication that China is going to attack Taiwan. Is this "American propaganda?" (Noam Chomsky's argument)- If China doesn't attack Taiwan what does that mean for oil demand?API Monthly Statistical Report and Quarterly Outlook- Rig activity in US is still down more than 1/5 - combo of energy policy, supply issues, labor issues- Private equity companies are leading oil production this year- Without completion crew we are seeing DUCs accrue in various regions- Are we running low on acreage? NOW there are plenty of sweet spot good rocks to drill. Problem is labor and supply chain constraints. Fiscal constraints are mitigated. Capital access is an issue still.- Lack of support for leasing on federal lands, steel tariffs cause problems, no real backing of oil and gas production from administration.- We are sitting with the lowest SPR since 1985 but consumption is 3 or 4 times higher than in 1985. - Problems getting high voltage lines in communities to build charging stations is a huge challenge so charging stations are putting in diesel generators in California.- Sheer enormity of oil and gas consumption is being ignored. Can't put all the resources into something that is only 10% of global energy (renewables). Neglecting what shoulders the bulk of global energy systems is ... going to have consequences.- Only reason we have oil prices that are lower is because we are papering over the shortage in supply by releasing SPR. - Dichotomy between news about "fears of recession" and the economic indicators. - All in holistic view of oil inventories - they are down. US has basically pushed intelf into a recession with the interest rate increases. Europe is now following- China has potentially got large economic growth.- Dollar is at all time high, making imports for American consumers less expensive. US exports are less price competitive abroad. In the past this creates a wider trade deficit. Erodes investment. Petrochemical margins have now turned negative. Not worth it to build another ethane cracker on the gulf coast, for example. Not just about the sheer productively of the rocks. Its about the entire chain. Global economy is close to 3% growth, which means need 1.5 million bpd more oil each year.- Huge uncertainty now, especially with Russia sanctions coming online soon.- Ultimately supply and demand will determine prices, not the speculative momentum.Rate increases and pricing in recession is causing the opposite to happen with the speculators.- The fact that the economy is expected to actually be "historically strong"- Savings rate is not at recessionary levels and delinquencies in American households is not historically high, only edged up a little. Rebound in consumer sentiment.- IEA, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and OPEC have all said that they don't see investment patterns enough to meet oil demand. EIA forecast is 101 million bpd of global oil demand in 2023. Not enough investment to meet this.- Threat to US and global energy security
