Scott Graham is the National Outdoor Book Award-winning author of the National Park Mystery Series, published by Torrey House Press. A special 10th Anniversary Edition of book one in the series, Grand Canyon Sacrifice, featuring a foreword by Anne Hillerman, will be released March 25, 2025. Death Valley Duel, book nine in the series, was released in June 2024. Scott's critically acclaimed mysteries feature archaeologist Chuck Bender and his family as they encounter villainous intrigue in America's iconic western national parks, illuminating environmental and social justice issues specific to the parks along the way. Upon its debut, William Kent Krueger praised Grand Canyon Sacrifice as “engrossing…a topnotch read,” and Nina de Gramont called Death Valley Duel “a taut, smart, and propulsive thriller.” Scott is an avid outdoors person and advocate for public lands who lives with his wife, an emergency physician, in Durango, Colorado. In addition to his mysteries, Scott is the author of five nonfiction books. He has worked as a newspaper reporter, magazine editor, radio disk jockey, city councilor, and coal-shoveling fireman on the steam-powered Durango-Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad.  More: scottfranklingraham.com. Chuck is also the President of Skynet Broadband, a company that provides high-speed data, digital phone, and IT services to the Puget Sound region. He has been an active member of the Entrepreneurs' Organization (EO) for over two decades and serves as its US West Regional Chair.  In this episode: According to a study published in Inc. magazine, 95% of entrepreneurs say freedom is their favorite aspect of business ownership. Yet separating yourself from your business requires self-discipline and process documentation. Even McDonald's has a replicated process for making its signature burgers and fries. How can you relinquish your tasks so your company can operate independently? Before embarking on an entrepreneurial adventure, established executive Chuck Bender says to identify your ideal lifestyle. This allows you to build your organization around that vision. Although many entrepreneurs hesitate to transfer operational control to their team, it's essential to attain complete freedom. Chuck recommends defining your core values and pinpointing decisions that are exclusively yours. This allows you to empower your team to execute the remaining daily decisions. Additionally, process documentation streamlines problem-solving and effective decision-making, reflecting your values and accelerating growth in your absence. In this episode of Systems Simplified, Adi Klevit speaks with Charles (Chuck) Bender, CEO of Attentus Technologies, about documenting procedures for entrepreneurial freedom. Chuck explains how to delegate tasks effectively, the creative process of entrepreneurship, and how he founded multiple companies.

A smart man makes a mistake, learns from it, and never makes that mistake again. But a wise man finds a smart man and learns from him how to avoid the mistake altogether. Roy H. Williams Charles Bender is a, self-described, “smart man” and serial entrepreneur who has spent the last 20 years in the Entrepreneurs' Organization learning to be more wise. Married to Celia, for 27 years, and father of two amazing young men, Calen and Corbin, he has dedicated his adult life to ending generational poverty in his family.  Charles quickly learned that his path to financial and personal independence was to build successful businesses that add value to other human beings. He started his first business, Renaissance for Singles, in 1997 and built it into a national franchise with 35 offices in 8 states with revenues exceeding 20 million annually.  “We had amazing success early and really thought we understood business, little did we know just how lucky we were”, says Charles.  In 2003 regulatory changes to telemarketing created a massive shift in the business model that he was unsuccessful overcoming, resulting in the business being shut down in 2005. In 2003 he moved to the “country” and quickly learned that his new home did not have access to broadband internet services. In 2003 he founded Skynet Broadband (www.skynetbb.com) to address those problems for his community and other communities that lacked access. In that time Skynet Broadband has spun out another business, Biz IT Pros, a managed service provider for IT services, and made the Inc 5000 list in 2013. In 2017 Biz IT Pros merged with another MSP and together they formed Attentus Technologies (www.attentus.tech). Charles runs both entities today. Charles believes that our values drive our choices and the better we can articulate them the more intentional our choices become. A follower of “Stoicism”, Charles believes that many of the stressors' entrepreneurs feel can be directed to not having clearly articulated values to use as a decision-making framework and the errant belief that we can “control” more than our own perceptions and choices.   Charles is a 14-year Rotarian and volunteers extensively in the Entrepreneurs' Organization, currently serving as the incoming Regional Chair for the US West region. #EOWestisBest

Scott Graham's National Park mysteries combine murder, mayhem and mysticism in spectacular landscapes while embracing a keen awareness of environmental and social justice issues - a heady brew that's winning him a growing audience. Hi there I'm your host Jenny Wheeler and in today's Binge Reading podcast Scott talks about why he chose to set his five book series around an archaeologist sleuth Chuck and his Latina wife Janelle. Jenny Wheeler: But now here's Scott. Hello Scott, and welcome to the show. It's great to have you with us. Scott Graham: Hi Jenny, I'm happy to be here. Scott Graham - Author Entertainment-focused environmental mysteries Jenny Wheeler: You made a reputation for yourself as a journalist and a nonfiction writer before you started on the fiction. I'm just interested on what made you switch to fiction and was there something that like a Once Upon A Time moment where you felt that urge to change to writing fiction? Long road to publication Scott Graham:  Well, the truth is, I was a failed a fiction writer for a long time before I was finally a successful, published fiction author.   I've had the dream of being a fictional storyteller pretty much my entire adult life. And I've also enjoyed the writing process my entire life as well. I could make a living as a journalist, as a business writer, and I was able to then publish some nonfiction books. I was always getting up early in the morning and doing some fiction writing just for myself because I loved that idea of being a storyteller so much. It took me, probably like many fiction authors, four or five manuscripts that didn't go anywhere. That came close, came closer and closer before I got what I feel like I'm good enough to find a true publisher and get rolling with my actual published fiction. Canyon Sacrifice #1 Scott Graham National Park series The National Park series Jenny Wheeler: That's fantastic. So you've now got five books in your National Park series and these starring an archeologist called Chuck Bender and his Latina paramedic wife Janelle.  What made you decide on that theme and setting? Scott Graham: I'm from a small town that's named Durango in the far Southwest corner of Colorado in the Southwestern United States, and that area is a hotbed of archeological discovery and old civilizations that are around here. I was raised here in Durango. I'm familiar with all the archeological discoveries that have been made here and throughout the Southwest of the United States. And I'm fascinated by it, to be honest. I thought readers are probably going to be fascinated by that as well. I just built that in as one of the themes or the key aspects of the series; that there is always an archeological discovery.   There is an archeological dig or an archeological survey that is ongoing as part of the plot for each of the books. An archaelogist sleuth Jenny Wheeler: You're a self-proclaimed outdoorsman and your love of the natural environment comes through very strongly. Lots of reviewers comment on it.  Each of the books features one particular national park, doesn't it? It might be Yosemite, Grand Canyon, Yellowstone. . .  the most recent one is set in Utah in Arches National Park and as titled Arches Enemy. What draws you to the landscape? Scott Graham: Again, I'm so fortunate that I've been raised in a family by my
