Brian joins Howie and Scully in the King Room to the discuss the beauty of the public bathroom. His book of photography "Occupied" (published by New Heroes and Pioneers Press) captures the unique and unexpectedly compelling images of dive bar toilets including that of BJ's, J&J's, Ms. Mae's and Poor Boy's. In 1983, the Louisiana legislature named crawfish as the official state crustacean. In 2008, they proclaimed the Sazerac as New Orleans' official cocktail. And on June 1, 2024, Billy Nungesser, Lieutenant Governor of Louisiana, proclaimed Blue Plate Mayonnaise to be the official mayo of poor boy sandwiches. On this week's show, we explore some other essential poor boy ingredients. We begin with the story of the first poor boy loaf ever baked from the inventor's grandson and great-grandson, John and Jason Gendusa. The Gendusa family bakery has been inextricably tied to that famous New Orleans sandwich since 1929. Next, Sandy Whann of Leidenheimer Baking Company shares the story of his family's bakery which dates back to 1896. We also speak with his son William Whann, who is carrying on the family business. Finally, we have a taste of Chisesi Brothers and hear the delicious story of their 100-plus year-old family history from fifth generation Nicholas Chisesi and his octogenarian dad, Philip. Gurdip returns this week for a lively discussion about the soundtrack to Elvis' 1968 film "Speedway," which co-starred Nancy Sinatra, who features on two tracks, making her one of the few artists to ever appear on an album with Elvis during his lifetime. The guys dig a bit into the recording sessions (which, minus Sinatra's contributions, were primarily done at MGM's soundstage instead of at RCA Studio B as usual) and how this move affected the production quality of the album, the poor choice of promotional single material, unfortunate timing of the film & soundtrack's release, and ponder how Elvis' final soundtrack LP for a fictional film managed to, like the first movie album from 11 years earlier, end up with nearly half the songs featured not even appearing in the film itself. The guys also catch up on a bunch of listener emails, and then for Song of the Week, Gurdip selects Elvis' unique 1957 interpretation of the spiritual "I Believe," while Justin goes much lighter, picking "Poor Boy," recorded for and featured in his first feature, Love Me Tender. Joe and the Poorboy are rockin' the tunes and throwing in snippets of painful jibber-jabber. First, Joe and the Poorboy harass some poor Pakistani dude during the old bit, "Embassy Football Picks."Later, the boys make sure to warn everyone about icy roads, and for fat people to be extra careful, for some reason. Then, the cringe factor during the attack on fat people is surpassed with Joe and EZ's gross talk about some bikini contest at Hooter's.Finally, EZ badly insults Joe's sweet wife, for an unknown reason. All in a days work for "The Joe and the Poorboy Show!"Our Sponsors:* Check out Factor 75 and use my code zane50 for a great deal: https://www.factor75.com/Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-eric-zane-show-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
Check out the whole show, FREE with a 7-day trial to my Patreon! The show starts with Ben reviewing EZ's 12/28/93 interview with Ted Nugent. For the first time, ever, Ted is out-douched by someone. EZ blurts and chirps numerous guttural giggles that sound horribly un-natural as Ted rambles on about nothing. EZ's over-the-top, puke-yelling, random "go nowhere" questions, compound this insipid, testosterone fueled, pile-of-shit to a new level of radio horror. How EZ continued to work at any radio station with this type of shit performance for all to hear, is proof he made a deal with Lucifer himself.Next, EZ jumped 4.5 years into the future for a Spring 1998 "Joe and the Poorboy" episode. Here, EZ was quick to insult local people in the news who lost their lives tragically. This week we are being seduced by the great game of baseball while we discuss “The Unnatural”! We're talking the shocking amount of cactus hatred, how much Mulder and Scully love destroying FBI property and how they could just go on dates if they wanted to hang instead, the Pythagorean theorem for jocks, Amanda's favorite alien guy she's been waiting for weeks to get to, how they really need to bring back sexy saxophone riffs, and how yet another bee is ruining a beautiful romantic moment. We wonder how on earth you manage to write such a touching gay love story by accident, cheer on Poorboy the street urchin, apologize because we don't really GET baseball, and of course talk about the truly excessive amounts of flirting in this one. It is off the charts. We have to invent new charts, truly.Note: Please submit questions/comments for our Season 6 wrap-up episode by October 15th!Send us an email at scullynationpod@gmail.com or follow us on Twitter and Instagram!

"A Night of Rock and Roll Remembrance: Grateful Dead at MSG, 1990"Larry Mishkin pays tribute to Jimi Hendrix, reflecting on his iconic rock career and tragic passing 53 years ago. He shares anecdotes about Hendrix's influence on rock music and highlights the infamous 27 Club, a group of rock legends who died at the age of 27. The episode also previews upcoming music events, including Fish Fest and Tedeschi Trucks Band's shows with special guests like Warren Haynes and Norah Jones, promising an exciting lineup for music enthusiasts..Produced by PodConx Deadhead Cannabis Show - https://podconx.com/podcasts/deadhead-cannabis-showLarry Mishkin - https://podconx.com/guests/larry-mishkinRob Hunt - https://podconx.com/guests/rob-huntJay Blakesberg - https://podconx.com/guests/jay-blakesbergMeetLoaf Website - https://meetloaftribute.com/performance-schedule/Recorded on Squadcast Grateful Dead, September 18, 1990, MSG, NYCGrateful Dead Live at Madison Square Garden on 1990-09-18 : Free Borrow & Streaming : Internet Archive This show was on the 20th anniversay of Jimi Hendrix's death. Interesting because I see it in headlines re this show, but they really didn't play anything Jimi related as far as I can tell and none of the comments even mention that. Neverthless, it is a noteworthy anniversary (53 years he has been gone, almost double his life span of 27, he's in that club). Dead also did a show on this date in 1970, the day Jimi died but when I checked that show there was no acknowledgement (that I could hear) of Jimi dying but of course, back then with no interenet, they may not even have known on that date anyway. Nevertheless, Jimi is Jimi so I'm openkng the episode with him on the intro and then switching over to the Dead show. INTRO: Foxey Lady Jimi Hendrix Miami Pop Festival, 1968 (great You Tube video , check it out) The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Foxey Lady (Miami Pop 1968) - YouTube Start – 1:30 One of my favorite openings of any rock song out there. Just loud Jimi from the outset, Even if you are not a big Jimi fan, you may also recognize this because of how distinctive it is. Jimi born on Nov. 27, 1942 in Seattle Died in 1970 in London Member of the “27” club along with; Brian Jones (Stones), Alan Wilson (Canned Heat), Jim Morrison (Doors),Janis Joplin,Kurt Cobain (Nirvana),Pig PenAmy WinehouseDave Alexander (Stooges – with Iggy Pop)Peter Ham (Badfinger) Created three of the most famous albums in rock: Are you Experienced Axis: Bold as Love Electric Ladyland Jimi died 53 years ago today. Hendrix aspirated his own vomit and died of asphyxia while intoxicated with barbiturates.Still considered the greatest rock guitarist ever although there are a few who could give him a serious run for the money. Dead Great show, Vince's third show (started on 9.7.90) and Bruce Hornsby's 3d as well. Show known for all of its epic jams which I will primarily be focusing on. SHOW #1: Minglelwood Blues Track #2 3:15 – 4:23 Perenial tune that the Dead played from Day one (and even before) through the end. Check out Bruce's jam on this clip and then band comes crashing back in. Very cool. SHOW #2: To Lay Me Down Track #7 Start – 1:33 I know I have mostly been featuring jams, but Jerry's vocals are so beautiful here, with great crowd reaction, that on this one I had to go with the vocals. A nine minute version of one of Jerry and Hunter's prettiest ballads. When Jerry's voice is on, like here, you can make a strong argument is is their best. SHOW #3: Promised Land Track #8 3:33 – 5:00 Love this song whether it opens the show or closes the set as here. Just a rocker written by Chuck Berry while he was in jail – used the prison library atlas to help him pick out the geographic route taken by the “Poor Boy” on his trip from Norfolk VA to LA via bus, plain and the houstontown people who care a thing about him and won't let him down. But check out this jam at the end of the song. Normally breaks right off after the final lyrics but today they just jam it out – the spirit of Jimi? SHOW #4: Foolish Heart (jam out of – from So Many Roads Boxed Set) Track # 11 6:20 – 7:45 Classic Dead jam that got a lot of attention when it was included in the Dead's original box set, So Many Roads, released a long time ago (Nov. 7, 1999) as a separate track actually titled, “Jam Out Of Foolish Heart”. At their improvisational best here. Strong Other One foreshadowing which plays out as advertised after a strong drums and funky Space. The whole second set just rolls along. A good night to be in MSG seeing the boys. OUTRO: Knockin On Heaven's Door Track # 18 Start – 1:30 Again, the music intro jam is so great that's what I am featuring. Be sure to check out Bruce Hornsby's jumping in on the accordion! Really nice Bob Dylan cover, Jerry played it for years. Was released on his Run For The Roses album.

Jamie Dailey is a ball of energy, both on stage and off. After making some legendary music with Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, he formed the award-winning Dailey & Vincent with Darrin Vincent. For over fifteen years, they have found immense success in bluegrass and beyond. Dailey & Vincent host their own television show and were made members of the Grand Ole Opry in 2017. What does family mean to you? For the folks on this week's show, when it comes to food, family means everything. NOCCA Culinary Arts student and Chopped Junior champion Retiba Hagazzi is a perfect example of that. The bright, ambitious teenager learned how to love people through food from her father, Khalid. They share that love with the world every time their food truck, Sittoo's Kitchen pulls up. They join us in the studio to share their story. Jarred Zeringue of Wayne Jacob's Smokehouse perpetuates generational old food love at the LaPlace landmark. When the Vacherie-born chef acquired the business in 2016, he made sure to keep the Jacob's family recipes authentic, in part because of the vital role they played in his own family's food traditions. We talk with him about the smokehouse and his new book, Southern and Smoked: Cajun Cooking through the Seasons. Finally, we speak with keepers of the Poor Boy flame, John and his son Jason Gendusa. The Gendusa family bakery has been inextricably tied to that famous New Orleans sandwich since 1929. We're celebrating their bakery's centennial by hearing the story of how it all began. Lori and Richard Hurst, owners of Poor Boy's Riverside Inn, join Discover Lafayette to discuss their family business celebrating its 90th year in operation. Richard Hurst is a third-generation family member who has worked in the restaurant since he was four years old when he started peeling potatoes and shrimp. Discover Lafayette is grateful for the support of Eat Lafayette and Lafayette Travel for the opportunity to highlight our local restaurants, starting with Poor Boy's Riverside Inn this month! Pictured are Lori and Richard Hurst, owners of Poor Boy's Riverside Inn Restaurant. Lori says, "I am very passionate about eating local and shopping local. I want everyone who was born here to remember how blessed they are to have been born here. Remember we were voted 'Happiest City?' Of course, we're happy. We're eating Cajun food! We are so lucky to have this flair and everybody here knows how to cook with love! We have fun and our food tastes great and it catches every sense. Everybody should embrace our culture and share meals with their family at local restaurants. Let the restaurant cook, and serve you, and clean up for you. Come make memories!" Lori Hurst is the public spokesperson promoting locally owned restaurants, serving as 2022 Chair of Eat Lafayette. The "water girl" of Poor Boy's Riverside Inn, Lori is passionate about sharing the many reasons we should all celebrate our Cajun culture. Lori Hurst, chair of Eat Lafayette, says, "Restaurant people give so much back to the community. All those fundraisers...those are local restaurants supporting you. It's so important to eat locally. Support our local economy. You're missing out if you're not experiencing our local restaurants. Lafayette has so much to offer! The Hursts are carrying on the rich legacy of Hulo “Poor Boy” Landry, who started Poor Boy's Riverside Inn in 1932. As the Hursts tell it, Hulo used to hang out with his uncle at the Roosevelt Hotel in New Orleans where he learned to cook by working with the guys in the kitchen. During the Depression, everyone brought something to the pot to make a meal to feed a crowd. Lori Hurst says back then you either put something on bread or added water to it to make a gumbo. "Poor Boy sandwiches" were a delicious meal outcome that originated in New Orleans and Hulo took a liking to them. He brought the concept back to Lafayette. Larry Hurst, Richard and Lori Hurst along with their son, Christian, celebrating the 90th Anniversary of Poor Boy's Riverside Inn. After developing an allergy to flour while working for Evangeline Maid bread and having to find employment to take care of his family, Hulo Landry opened a snowball business selling three snowcones for 5 cents during the Depression. A man who liked to eat, he packed a huge 'poor boy sandwich' lunch as he left home each day to sell his wares. His customers soon clamored for these sandwiches that no one in Lafayette had ever seen. Soon loyal customers convinced him to add his unique poor boy sandwiches to the snowball cart menu. And one benefactor, Judge Kaliste Saloom, helped Hulo open his first small restaurant on St. John Street in Lafayette so that people could sit down together and socialize while they ate his delicious food. Hulo Landry pictured in 1932 in his first business enterprise, his snowball stand, which was the genesis of Poor Boy's Riverside Inn which has been in business for 90 years. Success led Hulo to open up a larger restaurant in 1939 on the Vermilion River at Pinhook near the bridge. Originally known as Huff's Riverside Inn when he purchased the property, Hulo renamed it "Poor Boy's Riverside Inn" in recognition of the nickname given to him by his loyal patrons. The restaurant endured flood after flood, even the renowned flood of 1940 which closed it down for three months after the waters rose to the roof of the building. Lori Hurst recounted how Hulo had to abide by a city agreement to have his restaurant work...
