With everything in the news, Pastors Joel and Susan wanted to sit down and discuss how Christians might respond to violence in the Middle East and the world. What are we called to do? Some resources referenced during this podcast include: A poem from Kenneth Bailey in Through Peasant Eyes Psalm 22 and Psalm 46 (mistakenly referred to in our conversation as Psalm 42) Prayers from The Book of Common Worship, including this prayer for a time after an act of violence: God of grace and peace, we pray for the region of Gaza, and the people of Israel, Palestine, and the whole Middle East. Help and heal the wounded, receive the dying into your embrace, and comfort those who mourn. Strengthen rescue and relief workers who protect and provide for others in the midst of crisis and chaos. Give leaders the wisdom and determination to understand the causes of hatred and prevent it from gaining force. Put an end to all violence and war, and restrain the impulse to use injustice to seek justice. Continue to pour out your mercy upon the victims of violence in all the other places we forget or ignore. Surround us all with your grace and bring peace to our weary world. This we pray in Jesus' name. Amen. Finally, here is a statement from the PCUSA Stated Clerk condemning violence and calling all to prayer.

Pastor Courtney describes ways written prayers can help guide us on our journeys, and invites us to read a prayer this week. Whether we are drawn to an ancient prayer from Scripture, the words of the church fathers and mothers like St. Augustine or Julian of Norwich, or a modern-day liturgy about changing diapers or enjoying hot coffee, the words from the community of faith are a wonderful tool for prayer.
