In the 19th century, an Anglican priest named John Henry Newman proposed a return to the Medieval church to pursue a greater devotion. Eventually, Newman became Roman Catholic and is now considered a Roman Catholic saint. While we might disagree with his conclusions, we can learn a lot from the questions he raised. Join Linus, Leia, and Christian as they learn about Newman and his questions from Dr. Carl Trueman, Professor of Biblical and Religious Studies at Grove City College in Grove City, Pennsylvania.

After a report suggesting a 'quiet revival' of the Christian faith in the UK was withdrawn due to faulty data, people have been debating whether this truly is a Christian country. Some point to statistics showing a steep decline in Christianity. Others say that the institutions and history of the UK have been shaped by the Church of England. To learn more about the influence of the established church, Adam Fleming speaks to Linda Woodhead, Professor of Theology and Religious Studies at Kings College London.

Since early modern times, following the Reformation, Christianity has been a key part of national identity, being passed on largely, though not exclusively, through the worship, teaching and pastoral ministry of the Church of England. This book seeks to reclaim what is unique about the Church of England - a church which claims to be 'part of' the one, holy Catholic Church - and its role in our national life, and how a deeper understanding of Christian faith can still be passed on through it to the English people. As part of this, Angela argues that the Church of England has been taken over by American evangelicalism, and that returning to its roots as a parish church in every community will bring hope back to the people of England in these fractured times. To give you a flavour of Angela's argument, she talks about her sense of sadness of the ‘decline of a Church which has brought comfort and courage to so many' and at the recent policy of ‘top-down managerialism' rather than addressing the roots of these problems in the ‘godless devaluing of human priesthood, community and responsibility.' She writes that the Church of England of our time ‘seems increasingly fragile' and that it has tried to make itself relevant by over-identifying with progressive issues – she believes it needs to be ‘more wary, more considerate and more inclusive when it debates these issues' and that ‘we must live with differences as a gift and not a curse.' Interestingly, she also writes, ‘there is a panicked conviction that unless the Church is doing something different, it will die. It might, of course. But Christianity should be able to cope with that.' She notes that ‘at least some of the disarray and confusion within the Church of England in the 21st century comes from what I have come to see as an evangelical ‘takeover' and, with it, an introduction of some of the sectarian tendencies that can accompany evangelical faith.' While being realistic about the serious issue of abuse within the Church and its role in slavery, oppression and racial injustice – ‘it has often failed to live up to the standards it proclaims' – she concludes, ‘we need the Church of England more than we ever did. It is the church of the nation, the guardian of our historical faith and the moral fabric on which our laws, habits and customs are based.' But, she writes, ‘to be a blessing, we must first get our own house in order', and then prioritise the needs of the poor, linking with other faith communities, caring for our heritage, returning to common liturgical prayer, making sure our leaders are teachers not managers, and making our churches a safe place for all. ‘Place and nation, parish and community are the bedrock. Low key, enduring, faithful.' About the author:Angela worked as a producer within the BBC's Religious Department for many years before training for ordination in the Church of England. She was a parish priest in the Diocese of Ely and worked at Westcott House in Cambridge and as a lecturer with the Cambridge Theological Federation. She was also Canon of Christ Church Cathedral Oxford. Now retired, she is Canon Emeritus of Christ Church Cathedral and a chaplain and honorary canon at Portsmouth Cathedral. She contributes regularly to Radio 4's Thought for the Day, writes a weekly column for the Church Times, and is very active on X.

Following the death of Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022, her son Prince Charles became King at the age of 73. He inherited the many titles that his mother carried throughout her 70-year reign, one of which is the “Defender of the Faith”. That refers to his role as the supreme governor of the Church of England. In 2009, the Church of England stated it had over 26 million baptised members accounting for nearly half of the population of England. It is also the mother church of the international Anglican Communion which is present around the world, particularly in Commonwealth countries like Canada, Australia and South Africa. The British monarch's role as Defender of the Faith is mostly symbolic; in practice he has limited powers. What is the monarch's role as head of the Church of England? Is it more about self-improvement than transformation?  How have practices like fasting and “giving things up” shifted over time, and what might be lost when Lent is detached from justice, community and repentance?Along the way, they also get into questions of forgiveness, accountability and power, asking what genuine repentance really looks like when the performative apology seems to be everywhere.Link to the poem Foolish Men Who Accuse: https://poets.org/poem/you-foolish-menLink to Jonny's lent reflection: https://www.methodist.org.uk/for-churches/resources/videos/lent-2026-bible-studies/Support the showEverything Bread and Rosaries does will be free for everyone forever, but it does cost money to produce so if you wish to support the show on Patreon, we'd love you forever!Music credits at this link

Where are we seeing growth in the Church of England?

The Church Times Podcast

The Bible's Society's report The Quiet Revival, published last year, said that the Church in England and Wales was in a “period of rapid growth, driven by young adults and in particular young men”, and the trend of decline had been reversed (News, 11 April 2025). But is the Church of England experiencing a share of this revival? Some have expressed concern that the Church will “miss out” on the opportunity presented. At the end of January, the Church Times hosted an event at St John's, Waterloo, in London, “Springtime for the Church of England: Where are we seeing growth?”, which brought together speakers representing different traditions to share stories of local growth. The podcast this week features the opening talk by the Revd Dr David Goodhew, Vicar of St Barnabas's, Middlesbrough, Visiting Fellow of St John's College, Durham University, and the former director of the Centre for Church Growth Research. “The reason we have a confused discussion is that people tend to say either it must be growth, or it must be decline,” he says. “Actually, it's both; and, if you look across British Christianity, you are seeing a whole load of things going up, and going down, and it depends where you look as to what you are seeing.” At the start, Madeleine Davies, senior writer at the Church Times, and the Vicar of St John's, Waterloo, Canon Giles Goddard, introduce the event. A video recording of the event can be purchased at: https://www.churchtimes.co.uk/springtime-for-the-church-of-england-where-are-we-seeing-growth Find out about forthcoming Church Times events, including the Festival of Preaching in September, at https://www.churchtimes.co.uk/events Try 10 issues of the Church Times for £10 or get two months access to our website and apps, also for £10. It's Thursday, February 19th, A.D. 2026. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 140 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark British preacher challenges buffer zones around abortion mills A preacher in Britain is challenging the country's abortion buffer zones which effectively censor the Bible. Officials arrested, charged, and convicted Stephen Green for holding a sign with a Bible verse near an abortion mill in 2023. The verse was Psalm 139:13 which says, “For You formed my inward parts; You knitted me together in my mother's womb.” Green stated, “As a Christian, I should be able to preach freely all over the land. Psalm 139 is about how we all belong to God from conception. Buffer zones and this conviction [are] a direct attack on the Bible and free speech.” Elon Musk endorsed new conservative political party in England Billionaire Elon Musk endorsed a new conservative political party in Britain last week. On Friday, Member of Parliament Rupert Lowe launched the Restore Britain Party. Musk shared the launch video on X which has received nearly 40 million views.  The party is devoted to ending mass immigration and the creeping Islamification of Britain. Rupert Lowe also stated the party will openly recognize the country's Christian heritage.  Listen. LOWE: “Restore Britain will openly recognize the Christian heritage that shaped this country's moral and civic foundation. (applause) Duty, restraint, forgiveness and, most importantly, fairness. These values created a high trust society. “Restore Britain will end the creeping Islamification of Britain. (applause)  Unfettered immigration from Islamic countries will end. (applause) Britain is a Christian country, and under Restore Britain government, it will remain a Christian country.” (applause) Church of England votes against blessing homosexual couples Last week, the Church of England  voted against proposals to allow blessing services for homosexual couples. The General Synod did not shut the door on the issue though, voting to investigate it in the future.  The move keeps the church from performing marriage services and blessing services for people living in unnatural relations. However, the Church of England's rules already allow blessing prayers within regular Sunday services for such couples.  Proverbs 25:26 says, “Like a muddied spring or a polluted fountain is a righteous man who gives way before the wicked.” Franklin Graham preached in world's southernmost city Evangelist Franklin Graham  preached in Ushuaia, Argentina. It's known as the southernmost city in the world. Listen. GRAHAM: “What makes Ushuaia so special are the people. We love the people. If you can't remember anything else tonight, remember this: God loves you. God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to take our sins. We deserve death. We're guilty of sin. “Bartimaeus had no hope. There are many of you here tonight. You have no hope. Now, Bartimaeus cried at the right time. Jesus was passing by. The Bible says that ‘God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but he should have everlasting life.' “Will you invite Christ into your heart? Will you trust Him? Come. Come to Jesus.” Hundreds of people turned to Christ through the evangelistic outreach event. Graham wrote on X, “We give God the glory for each one who responded to the invitation to repent of their sins and put their trust in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.” Eighty-two percent of South Americans identify as Roman Catholic, but evangelicalism has been growing in recent decades.    Graham also plans to visit Peru next month. 21 states challenge mail-order abortion kill pills In the United States, 21 states and 60 members of Congress are challenging mail-order abortion drugs. Louisiana initiated the case, challenging a Biden-era rule from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The rule removed the in-person dispensing requirement for the abortion drug mifepristone.  Erik Baptist with Alliance Defending Freedom stated, “The Biden FDA's unlawful authorization of mail-order abortion drugs was meant to be a loophole around states that choose to protect life.” 41-year-old mother Olympic bobsledder wins gold (audio Olympic theme song) American Olympic bobsledder Elana Meyers Taylor  won her first gold medal on Monday. The 41-year-old mother triumphed in the women's monobob event at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy.  She is now the oldest gold medalist in an individual Olympic event. After the victory, she said this on Instagram: “The moment we prayed for. Glory to God.” Norway has won the most gold medals Nearly 2,900 athletes from over 90 countries are competing in the 2026 Winter Olympics.  So far, Norway has won the most gold medals and the most medals overall. In the medal count, Norway is followed by Italy and the U.S. A podium finish can mean big prize money for athletes. A gold medalist from the U.S. can win $38,000. Athletes from Singapore can make the most for winning an individual event at $792,000.   Christian missionaries sharing Christ & Bibles in Olympic crowds And finally, Evangelicals are sharing the Gospel at the Winter Olympic Games this year. Hundreds of Southern Baptists alongside International Mission Board missionaries are joining the crowds to share Christ and distribute Bibles. Karen Herfurth is in Italy with a group from Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Huntsville, Alabama. She said, “This is a chance for Southern Baptists to reach more people and impact more lives! We may never know the difference this makes until we are in Heaven.” Close And that's The Worldview on this Thursday, February 19th, in the year of our Lord 2026. Follow us on X or subscribe for free by Spotify, Amazon Music, or by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com.  Plus, you can get the Generations app through Google Play or The App Store. As protests in Iran continue into their 16th day, Emily Buchanan asks Prof Ali Ansari whether the country is ready to end almost 50 years of clerical rule. Elegy from a Scottish church, as parishioners say goodbye to the Holy Family Parish in Inverclyde, one of more than 300 that have closed in Scotland since 2020.We hear about 'Born in Bethlehem' the BBC documentary that tracked the lives of Palestinian women giving birth in a Catholic-run hospital in the West Bank. Should the C of E foot the bill for lower income couples to encourage marriage? Church wedding costs are under scrutiny after a centre-right think tank, the Centre for Social Justice made the recommendation aimed at promoting marriage to improve outcomes for boys. The Universities of Leeds and Cambridge team up to train UK Muslims how to spot the moon themselves and end the so called 'moon wars' that often mark the end of Ramadan. Send us a textThe beloved hymn Rock Of Ages by Augustus M. Toplady was published in the late 1700s and came out of England.  The hymn itself is still popular and sung worldwide, all these years later.  While the hymns is well-known, some of the backstory and context surrounding Mr. Toplady is not.  Toplady and evangelist John Wesley had a very public feud over something that is still being debated today:  Calvinism vs. Arminianism.  Toplady as a Calvinist had strong disagreements with Wesley's views and how much Wesley was influencing the Church of England.  Today's podcast goes into this rift between these two men and the beautiful song that was written in the midst of it all:  Rock Of Ages.  Rock Of Ages CoverDerek's Hymns Playlist On YouTube

Want to reach out to us? Want to leave a comment or review? Want to give us a suggestion or berate Anthony? Send us a text by clicking this link! The fights are loud; the fixes are quiet. We open with a hard look at how Catholics talk about the Pope—prudence vs. fear, why “seamless garment” rhetoric detonates in trad circles, and what we learned from mistakes under Francis. Then the conversation drops from theory to battle: a sudden wave of despair, the urge to relapse, and the shock of deliverance prayers that cut through the darkness in minutes. No theatrics. Just binding, sealing, and mercy that holds. From there, we trace the slow road back to reverence. A wife resists the Latin Mass, refuses a veil, and breaks into tears mid-liturgia; a father stops arguing and starts praying the rosary with his kids; families watch baptism in the old rite wake up something deep and ancient. We ask why anyone would restrict the one thing setting young hearts on fire—and we name motives without denying the spiritual stakes. Outrage is easy; building is harder. So we get practical: chant where you can, add vespers, catechize at home when programs fail, invite a Novus Ordo friend to High Mass and lunch for four Sundays in a row.Callers sharpen the edges. When does venting become gossip? How do you start a Catholic channel without becoming an apologist clone? What lines do you draw around invalid marriages when little eyes are watching? We offer simple rules that keep charity intact: love widely, scandal never, and let the holiness of your home do the talking. We also face Canada's euthanasia slide and what real honor for aging parents looks like when it hurts.Along the way, we detour through Augustine, Israel, and typology—not as trivia, but as ballast for the soul. If you're tired of online shots and hungry for what actually works—deliverance, confession, Latin Mass, fatherhood that keeps its vows—this is your map back to clarity. If this resonates, share it with a friend, subscribe for more honest conversations, and leave a review to help others find the show. Fourth Circuit upholds WV ban on abortion kill pill, Christian non-profit victorious over ChatGPT, Church of England affirms sexual perversion for clergy … again

It's Thursday, July 17th, A.D. 2025. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 140 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark West Bank Christian communities attacked by Israeli settlers Christian communities in the West Bank are experiencing increasing attacks from Israeli settlers. Last Monday, Jewish extremists targeted the Palestinian Christian town of Taybeh. They attacked houses and started fires near the community's historic church building. The Council of Patriarchs and Heads of Churches of Jerusalem released a statement, saying, “The attacks by the hands of settlers against our community, which is living in peace, must stop, both here in Taybeh and elsewhere throughout the West Bank. This is clearly part of the systematic attacks against Christians that we see unfolding throughout the region.” Church of England affirms sexual perversion for clergy … again The Church of England voted Tuesday to remove a 1991 teaching document on sexuality from its ordination process. The document, entitled Issues in Human Sexuality, said that clergy should not live in homosexual relationships.  However, church leaders said the document now appears “prejudicial and offensive.”  The Church of England has allowed clergy to enter homosexual civil partnerships since 2005. Last year, it approved services of blessing for homosexual couples. Isaiah 5:20 says, “Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; who put darkness for light, and light for darkness.” Christian non-profit victorious in case against ChatGPT In the United States, a Christian non-profit won a religious freedom lawsuit against one of the biggest artificial intelligence organizations around. OpenAI offers a 20% non-profit discount for a ChatGPT subscription unless an organization is religious. A Christian non-profit named Holy Sexuality challenged this policy with the help of Alliance Defending Freedom. In response, OpenAI reversed course and offered the discount. It also removed religious discrimination language from its policy.   Dr. Christopher Yuan, the founder of Holy Sexuality, said, “Some corporations—especially tech companies—emboldened by intersectional ideology and anti-Christian sentiment, choose to unlawfully discriminate based solely on religion. We are grateful for this victory.” Fourth Circuit upholds West Virginia ban on abortion kill pill On Tuesday, the U.S. Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals upheld West Virginia's ban on the Abortion Kill Pill called mifepristone. The challenge to the ban came from GenBioPro, a company that produces the killing drug.  The case marks the first time a federal appeals court has allowed states to restrict access to mifepristone.  West Virginia Republican Governor Patrick Morrisey responded to the ruling, “West Virginia can continue to enforce our pro-life laws and lead the nation in our efforts to protect life. We will always be a pro-life state!” Senate Republicans pass $9 billion budget cut U.S. Senate Republicans advanced a $9 billion rescission bill on Tuesday with the tie-breaking vote of Vice President J.D. Vance. The measure follows President Donald Trump's agenda to cut spending on foreign aid and public broadcasting. Republicans must have the bill ready to be signed by Friday for the rescissions to be enacted.  Listen to comments from Republican Senate Majority Leader John Thune. THUNE: “Later today, the Senate will begin consideration of the Trump administration's rescissions package reining in waste, fraud and abuse in the federal government is a priority shared by President Trump and by Senate Republicans. “I appreciate all the work the administration has done in identifying wasteful spending. And now it's time for the Senate to do its part to cut some of that waste out of the budget. It's a small but important step toward fiscal sanity that we all should be able to agree is long overdue.” Christian and Gospel music seeing a resurgence Christian and Gospel music is seeing a resurgence, according to a report on music streaming trends by Luminate.  The Christian/Gospel genre moved up to seventh place in the top 10 U.S. music genres this year. And Christian music ranked fourth among the highest-growth genres. The report found Christian music listeners are mostly female, and the top generation listening to Christian music is Millennials. Deacon given free truck after protecting church from gunman And finally, WXYZ reports a church deacon in Michigan received a new truck recently after preventing a mass shooting at his church last month.  On Sunday, June 22, a shooter opened fire outside CrossPointe Community Church in Wayne, Michigan. In God's providence, Deacon Richard Pryor was running late. He saw the gunman heading to the church's front door, dressed in camouflage and bearing an AR-15 style rifle as well as  more than a dozen fully-loaded magazines. That's when Pryor ran the shooter over. However, his truck was totaled in the process as the shooter shot up the truck.  Fortunately, Pryor was not injured.  Another person, acting as a volunteer security guard, shot the gunman dead. In response, a local Ford dealership gifted the hero a brand new truck on a two-year free lease. Pryor said he was “thankful for everybody's support. The Lord was definitely involved in the events of that Sunday.” Psalm 121:4 and 7 says, “Behold, He who keeps Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep. … The LORD shall preserve you from all evil; He shall preserve your soul.” Close And that's The Worldview on this Thursday, July 17th, in the year of our Lord 2025. Follow us on X or subscribe for free by Spotify, Amazon Music, or by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com.  Plus, you can get the Generations app through Google Play or The App Store.
