Our guest this episode is long-time Seattle guitar fixture Danny Newcomb. Danny has primarily been known for playing lead guitar in rock bands since his early teens, playing alongside Mike McCready and the brothers Friel, but for the last 5+ years Danny has been putting out about an album per year of killer, roots/Americana, song-forward guitar music and fronting his own band. In 2020 he released a mostly acoustic album called Mackerel Sky (which I forgot to ask him about the title/song) that shows off his songwriting chops and voice in a more exposed way than ever before. I definitely recommend checking it out, along with his entire back catalog of bands and solo albums. We for sure talked about a LOT more than music, including the farming he does on Vashon Island near Seattle. Thank you so much for listening and for your continued support! We met a handful of years ago and it is always an absolute joy to see her perform and usually we can chat briefly when we cross paths but this was a great conversation for getting to know her story. Studied in jazz and orchestral band, Kathy didn't start playing guitar until she was 21 years old! She is an absolute ripper and can cover so many styles on the guitar AS WELL AS THE KEYS! Seriously, one of my regrets of leaving Seattle is that I left without ever getting to play and perform with Kathy. Go check out The Kathy Moore Super Power Trio! This episode's Couch Riffs guest hardly needs an introduction if you're a person in the guitar building community. Jon Sullivan of Sully Guitars has been around for years making guitars and friends in the guitar world because, well, he's really charming and likable. Oh, and he builds really killer guitars influenced by some of his favorite things: KISS, Randy Rhoads, Sparkles, and making sure something looks as cool as it is functional. This episode of Couch Riffs Podcast features guest Tony Reed, the creator of one of my all-time favorite albums, Mos Generator's "The Late Great Planet Earth". If you've never heard this album, do yourself a favor and give it a spin with a good set of headphones on. I've included the link for you above. You won't regret it. But, Tony is a busy man in the studio and on the road so to minimize his musical output to only this (amazing) album would not paint a complete picture. One of the more prolific artists I've known he has recorded and released dozens of albums by Mos Generator, Stone Axe, 12:30 Dreamtime, Hot Spring Water and recently has been collaborating with Bob Balch of Fu Manchu and Gary Arce of Yawning Man in the project Big Scenic Nowhere. This episode features guitar amp builder Derek Springer of Rola Amps in Tacoma, WA. If you've seen a rock show in Seattle in the last 8 years or so there is a pretty good chance you've seen and heard a Union Jack or Rola Amp delivering the goods. They're owned and played by a literal who's who of Seattle rock musicians and they certainly seem to be finding a wider and wider audience. Be sure to go check out https://www.rolaamps.com to see their amp line-up or Instagram @rolaamps the Pearl Jam video Derek mentioned that his amps appear in (and a Satellite Amp back-lined here!) : https://youtu.be/qQXP6TDtW0w Thanks for listening to the Couch Riffs Podcast!
