The Station Inn located in Cresson, Pennsylvania was built in 1866, situated just ten miles west of the famous Horseshoe Curve, it was originally built as a hotel for weary travelers heading east or west on the Pennsy Railroad. Over the last hundred and fifty years it's gone through many changes including the early 90's when it was purchased by Tom Davis and turned into the place railfans of all kinds from across the globe would come to stay. Fast forward to present day, after Tom passed away in 2021 it was purchased by Alex Lang and his wife Leah who over the years had built a deep friendship with innkeeper and decided they wanted to keep the tradition and memory of Tom alive. It's been an adventure for the couple who reside an hour and a half away but as you listen to this podcast, you'll quickly realize their passion for the Station Inn is something we can all be truly thankful for. Enjoy!!

Let's head back down to the Station Inn on the Norfolk Southern mainline at Cresson, Pennsylvania for some words of wisdom from “Uncle” Dave and “the Wiz.” In part two of the “Chronicles” Rich Wisneski gives us some detailed background about the grades heading east and west as the tracks cross the summit near Gallitzin, Pennsylvania. We find out more about a seventeen-year-old Dave that's made the same trek every year for the last three decades and how he managed to keep going. Much has changed at the Station Inn over the last couple of years as Alex Lang along with his lovely wife have purchased this historic property, Alex describes some of the challenges they've faced running the Inn while making some major improvements. Several trains pass while conducting interviews on the porch which just adds to the excitement of sitting just a few feet away from a busy mainline. Episode 257: When you live in Nashville and chase the essence of country music, you find it's very much alive at residency shows like New Monday at the Station Inn. That's where master musicians Val Storey, Larry Cordle and Carl Jackson play a range of original and classic songs that connect country to bluegrass. It's magic, especially because of Val Storey's remarkable voice. She's the best country singer most people have never heard of. And after decades of singing for and with others, she has an album of her own, produced by star bluegrass songwriter Larry Cordle. Val and Larry sit down together to reflect on a long friendship and why some voices need an extra push.

Time has passed, a year has gone by, and another visit to the Station Inn in Cresson, Pennsylvania has produced more great interviews with some very interesting characters. Situated beside the Norfolk Southern's main line from Altoona to Johnstown, Pennsylvania fighting over some of the steepest mainline grades east of the Mississippi. It's a busy helper district with high-volume traffic. In part, one of the Cresson Chronicles, we interviewed a delightful fellow known as John Zelehoski with a plethora of unfinished stories. We talked to Doug Watts, a former Conrail employee, lifelong railroader and finally someone that's becoming a fan favorite with his cheerful personality, Ralph Heiss, or we like to refer to him as Ralphie Boy. There's nothing like having the opportunity to meet new people and spend quality railfanning time with friends. The Station Inn - https://stationinnpa.com/ - located along the Norfolk Southern mainline just west of Altoona is probably one of the best railfanning spots in all of North America. First opened in 1993, as the brainchild of Tom Davis a retired school administrator from New Jersey. Not long after it opened, an advertisement was placed in one of the more popular rail magazines of the day and a young “Uncle” Dave along with his brother and a couple of friends spent a weekend at “the Inn.” Dave's been coming back every year since with an ever-growing band of characters, this was the twenty-nineth straight year for Dave and the first for the AML crew. With microphone in hand the “Evel Overlord” decided to find out what's the deal with Dave through the eyes of his friends and brother Ben. It's a great interview that we know you'll enjoy!!!

Editor's note: As part of our When Love Shows Up Throwback Series we are re-posting this blog post which was originally posted on October 7, 2021. The first time I really noticed this effect was while watching live bluegrass at a little bar in Nashville called the Station Inn. It was the Spring of 2001, and this band I'd never heard of stood in a half circle up on a bare little stage - two guitars, fiddle, banjo, mandolin, and bass - ripping through a beautiful song I'd never heard but felt like I'd known forever. As the song progressed, each musician stepped forward to solo. Everyone was a soulful virtuoso, but I was amazed by the discipline of their offerings - no matter how good each performer was, they confined their solo to the melody, then stepped back into the half-circle and disappeared into the sound of the whole...Each piece mattered, by the way. Every instrument. Every voice. They worked together in service of the song and carried it along while the melody carried them. I'm getting too fanciful about this, and I'm sorry about that but music is one of the things that helps me understand what I believe and feel about life. And this idea of these powerful, brilliant, dynamic musicians bringing their talents together to serve something bigger than themselves continues to speak to me after all these years.

Powered by Yazoo Pale Ale, applause, and a sense that this girl I was crazy about might just be more special and more permanent than the whole music industry thing, I turned to Kristen, said those three magic words, and she said ‘I love you too.' Ever wondered what it’s like inside the grueling tryouts and competitions of American Idol? This week on She’s in the City, we get the inside scoop from Season 18 contestant, Lauren Mascitti. This girl is as talented and genuine as they come, and in being raised by her beloved grandparents was indoctrinated into gospel and classic country music from a young age. Much like us she loves Dolly, Patsy, Crystal Gayle, Linda Ronstadt, and Dawn Sears of The Time Jumpers, which she encourages all of us to check out. She gives us inside scoops on Nashville’s hallmark Station Inn and shares what great power she believes sorrowful ballads hold in breaking isolation and healing our heartaches. E.g. her own Ballad of a Broken Heart and Losing My Mind. "I'm an old soul," Lauren admits, "and everything I really love tends to come from a time that's before my own." But how did all this nostalgic sound and songwriting go over on American Idol, you wonder? Well as many of us remember, Lauren’s surge toward success came on the heels of her watershed performance on the show, God Made a Woman, a biblically rooted song inspired by and written much about her grandmother, Nana, who raised her. Lauren admits her hesitance to pursue the American Idol competition, one that tends to lean more toward modern music and artists, but her courage to stick to her style and perform her own song in lieu of mainstreams options the judges encouraged paid off. She made a bold move and took the stage with just her guitar and a song so personal and close to home, and the reaction was overwhelmingly positive!  Not only did God Made a Woman receive a standing ovation from all three American Idol judges, it surged to #18 on iTunes country singles charts and brought the whole album for which this song is the title track to #4 along with it. Even after being cut in the Top 20 round of the show, Lauren’s performance of God Made a Woman now has over seven million views on YouTube, Facebook, all the platforms and her album continues to see great success.  Even though she didn’t end up where she wanted in the American Idol running, she tells us, the Lord used that song and that experience to take her even greater places.  “I went into with the feeling that if He wants me to go further in it, I will. And if He doesn’t, there’s probably something down the road He’s protecting me from. It’s really all about trusting the Lord.” Amen, Lauren! Thank you for your talent, your heart, and your voice. Y lo hicieron gracias canciones como "I’ll Never Get Over You" que cantaba sobre días más largos y barbacoas encendidas. My Favorite Picture of You. Escuchar audio

John Oates & The Good Road Band ‘Live In Nashville’ Set For September 18th Release Four new originals along with covers of Mississippi John Hurt, Jimmy Rogers, Don Gibson highlight second Thirty Tigers album LOS ANGELES, July 31, 2020—Rock & Roll Hall of Famer John Oates has had a home in Nashville for more than a decade, performing with some of the city’s most sought-after musicians. John’s Thirty Tigers debut, Arkansas, performed with The Good Road Band, was released in 2018, proving a critical and commercial success in the Americana and roots community, a combination of originals with classic songs popularized by Mississippi John Hurt, Jimmy Rodgers and Don Gibson. After two-plus solid years of honing their chops through touring, that group – mandolin stalwart Sam Bush, pedal steel maestro Russ Pahl (Dan Auerbach), electric guitar whiz Guthrie Trapp, expert bassist Steve Mackay, cello prodigy Nate Smith (Kacey Musgraves) and drummer/percussionist extraordinaire Josh “Daddy” Day – returns intact for Live In Nashville, set for release on September 18 on all major digital streaming platforms. The set was recorded last January 9 at Station Inn, the legendary intimate listening room in The Gulch section of Nashville where the band first took shape. “This album represents a full-circle moment for me,” said John, in quarantine with his family in his adopted Music City home. “It feels like the culmination of the Arkansas project, being able to bring these guys back, and to be able to make this record after touring and playing so many shows together.” Inspired by Mississippi John Hurt, Live in Nashville features songs like the gospel-blues opener, “Lord Send Me,” the Delta blues of the standard “Stack o Lee” and an electrified take on “Make Me a Pallet on Your Floor,” dubbed “Pallet Soft and Low,” where John manages to show off some of his well-honed rock guitar skills. In yet another “full circle moment,” John pays tribute to his own childhood with a cover of Don Gibson’s “Oh Lonesome Me,” the first song he learned to sing and play on guitar as a six-year-old after hearing it on the radio. Several of the songs come with Oates’ own stories about the songs, connecting the dots as to their connections, including popular hits of the era like the Mississippi Sheiks’ 1930 success, “Sittin’ on Top of the World,” Emmett Miller’s 1924 breakthrough, “Anytime” and Jimmy Rogers’ 1932 classic, “Miss the Mississippi and You.” Watch "Anytime" HERE “I was always fascin

Welcome to Tulsa Talks presented by Tulsa Regional Chamber. I’m your host Tim Landes. Oh boy was I excited to do this interview. My guest on this episode is Chad Rodgers, who co-owns and operates the legendary Cain’s Ballroom. It’s a place I consider a second home. I’ve seen hundreds of concerts at Cain’s over the years, yet I’d never talked to Chad until we sat down for this conversation the second week of March. At the time it was coincidentally one of the quietist months for the venue since the Rodgers family took over ownership in 2003. Of course now there won’t be any shows in for the next month or two as we deal with the COVID-19 pandemic. Before the world suddenly changed, Cain’s Ballroom was rockin’ n rollin’. In late January, LA Times writer Christopher Reynolds published his list of the 12 best places for best live music in America. Cain’s ranked No. 4. The only places ahead of it are New Orleans’ Royal Street, NYC’s Carnegie Hall and Nashville’s Station Inn. Less than a week later, Rolling Stone named Tulsa as one of the eight best cities to see live music and highlighted the relationship Cain’s has with modern music legend Jack White. Of course Chad and I discuss how the White Stripes frontman came to fall in love with Cain’s and what it’s meant for business. We also look back at the early days of the Rodgers family operation, when they inherited the historic ballroom that at the time had no air conditioning, a leaking roof and a mythical wood floor that needed replaced. We also discuss the urban legend that is the spring-loaded floor. It was also suddenly a family business where nobody in the family had any experience in running a concert venue. Chad talks about the bumps and bruises and when things turned around it became the Cain’s Ballroom we all love today. This was a fun conversation diving into why Cain’s is so special to me and many other music fans that stretch well beyond Tulsa. This conversation is an expansion of a story about the ballroom that is featured in our April issue. Our intern, Ethan Veenker, did a great job writing about what makes Cain’s special. With distribution of physical copies extremely limited right now, I’d encourage you to visit TulsaPeople.com and check out the story, plus all the other great stuff in the magazine. If you want to read it like a magazine, we also have the digital issue linked on the homepage.Following my conversation with Chad, Tulsa Voice music writer Kyra Bruce checks in from home to share an excerpt of her interview with Tulsa singer/songwriter Lex followed by the song “Skin Off My Back” to close out the episode. Make sure to also check out her People to Wave To series on Youtube and The Voice’s facebook page. OK, let’s get this going. This is Tulsa Talks with Chad Rodgers of the legendary Cain’s Ballroom.

The Time Jumpers originally started as a small group of studio musicians just looking to get together to practice.  The casual group of friends eventually started playing regular gigs together with their Monday night performances at the Station Inn.  They've since moved to the renovated Third and Lindsley nightclub to accommodate their growing fan base.  The group received two Grammy nominations for their first album and they released a second project this fall.  We had a chance to catch up with a few members on the set of their latest music video "On The Outskirts of Town."

DON RIGSBY is one of the most accomplished bluegrass musicians working in Kentucky. From remote Isonville, KY, to an international following in Bluegrassmusic, Don has remained true to his mountain roots and made his own marks as a powerful tenor and distinctive mandolin player. Don played with JD Crowe and The New South, and was a member of the award-winning Lonesome River Band. The two-time Grammy nominee and two-time SPBGMA Traditional MaleVocalist of the Year and sang on a Grammy-winning album by rocker John Fogerty. SUGAR TREE are three wanderin' women who found their way back to the tippy-toes of the Appalachian foothills in Berea. This string trio are known for their pristine vocal harmonies, traditional and contemporary song choices and cowgirl boots. THE 23 STRING BAND hail from all around Kentucky. The band pays a fun, fuel-injected, original Americana that dangerously weaves across the lanes of modern acoustic music windows down, accelerator to the floor, on a joyride into the unknown with one eye on the vintage sounds in the rearview mirror. It's a bluegrass attack fueled by high-octane rock-n-roll energy and triple-distilled organic roots. The guys won the prestigious band competition at RockyGrass in Lyons, CO in 2011. Their latest album is 'Catch 23.' BAWN IN THE MASH are entering their seventh year of performing their sound founded in the ancient tones of Western Kentucky. Based in Paducah, early fans watched the band go from busking Appalachian street corners to headlining the Bristol Rhythm and Roots Reunion-- from performing on the corner of 4th and Broadway to selling out the world famous Station Inn-- and from playing local barrooms to performing in the Victorian Ballroom aboard the Delta Queen steamboat, as the band continually progresses and impresses listeners worldwide. The band has just released their 4th studio album. BLAKELY BURGER is hails from Lexington and is known around town as the “That Lil Fiddler. This 13 year old comes from a musical family and specialty is bluegrass fiddling, although she also is currently learning mandolin, guitar, and piano.
