This week we are talking about bands that have rock stars in them: Supergroups and Offshoots. Captain Content reminds us that a band consisting of well-known artists from other bands does not always equal great success. We dive into some of the more obscure supergroups and offshoots that didn't break with huge mainstream success or stay around very long. What is it we do here at InObscuria? Every show Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect from his personal collection; an artist, album, or collection of tunes from the broad spectrum of rock, punk, and metal. This week we talk exclusively about Supergroups featuring famous solo artists and band members along with, Offshoots which are bands that contain the bulk of a previous incarnation of a famous band. We hope that we turn you on to something new.Songs this week include:Neurotic Outsiders – “Nasty Ho” from Neurotic Outsiders (1996)Thrasher – “Bad Boys” from Thrasher (1985)Heavy Bones – “4:AM T-M” from Heavy Bones (1991)Ultra Bomb – “Time To Burn” from Time To Burn (2022)Saints Of The Underground - “Tomorrow Never Comes” from Love The Sin, Hate The Sinner (2008)Mad Season – “Lifeless Dead” from Above (1995)Far Corporation – “Stairway To Heaven” from Division One (1985)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://x.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/InObscuria?asc=uIf you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/Check out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/

Minnesota-based singer/songwriter Tony Cuchetti brings us the lone 1995 release by grunge supergroup Mad Season, 'Above'. When Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready and journeyman bass player John Baker Saunders met at rehab, they decided to form a band and brought in Layne Staley of Alice In Chains primarily because they thought he would benefit from being around some clean musicians. With Screaming Trees drummer Barrett Martin rounding out the band, they crafted this dense record of slow-burning jams that is as bleak a document of drug addiction as you're ever likely to hear. Songs featured in this episode: River Of Deceit (Live at the Moore, Seattle 1995) - Mad Season; Lay It On Me, The After - Tony Cuchetti; The Rooster - Alice In Chains; Nearly Lost You - Screaming Trees; Wake Up, X-Ray Mind, River Of Deceit - Mad Season; Better Man - Pearl Jam; I'm Above, Artificial Red, Lifeless Dead - Mad Season; Hunger Strike - Temple Of The Dog; I Don't Know Anything, Long Gone Day - Mad Season; Voodoo - Godsmack; November Hotel - Mad Season; Riders On The Storm - The Doors; All Alone - Mad Season; Stubborn Bones - Tony Cuchetti
This week we're discussing the one and only album by Mad Season—Above. A side project and supergroup made up of Layne Staley on vocals (Alice in Chains), Mike McCready on guitar (Pearl Jam), Barrett Martin on drums (Screaming Trees), John Baker Saunders on bass, with contributions from Mark Lanegan. Mad Season was short-lived but commercially successful. However, Staley's erratic behavior and drug use ended any potential for long-term success that the band had and ultimately led to his death in 2002. Don't Call It Nothing continues its tribute to the Screaming Trees and the late Mark Lanegan by reviewing the years 1990-93. The decade began with Lanegan releasing his solo debut, The Winding Sheet, with help from Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic of Nirvana. Both Conner brothers released records in 1990 through New Alliance Records, a subsidiary of SST that began life as an outlet for D Boon and Mike Watt of the Minutemen. In 1991, the Trees released their major label debut and final album with original drummer Mark Pickerel, Uncle Anesthesia. Barrett Martin then replaced Pickerel in time to record the band's masterpiece, 1992's Sweet Oblivion. We end the episode in 1993 as Mark Lanegan joins The Walkabouts for a soulful walk through the Charlie Rich catalog.Support the show
(THIS EPISODE IS DEDICATED TO THE LOVING MEMORY OF MARK LANEGAN, REST IN PARADISE, KING). Oh man, if I've ever been beside myself on this show, it's this week! We are beyond honored to have Barrett Martin on the show, founding member of the legendary staple of the Pacific Northwest, Screaming Trees. But the thing we have been most moved by was a supergroup that Barrett was a part of in the mid 90's called, “Mad Season”. The one album they put out, “I'm Above”, truly changed and has continued to mold my life. Maximum respect, Barrett, Aloha!

Martin also touches on his time in alternative era bands Screaming Trees, Mad Season, Tuatara and as part of R.E.M. - including his decision to decline taking over for original member Bill Berry. He also reflects on some of the friends he lost and confirms that he and fellow Screaming Trees members Mark Lanegan and the Van Conner brothers all still talk and get along (contrary to most music gossip). In this episode, Col. Brian Rauen and Capt. Barrett Martin join to talk about the increasing importance of the Arctic. Col. Rauen is the commander of 10th Special Forces Group, and Capt. Martin is one of the officers assigned to the group. 10th Group has a particular focus on Europe, which means the unit has a natural organizational interest in the Arctic region. As you’ll hear our guests explain, though, that interest is growing. They discuss why that's the case, and they talk about some of the unique challenges posed by such an extreme environment. The episode features a guest host, Dr. Ryan Burke, who is an MWI fellow and co-director of Project 6633, an MWI project focused on polar security. 10th Group and Project 6633 have also partnered to organize an essay contest, inviting submissions that address the question of how American special operations forces can compete with near-peer adversaries in the polar regions. If you’re interested in entering, more details about the contest can be found here.

Megan Sikora and Barrett Martin are a Broadway Power Couple! Between the two of them, they have performed in 20 Broadway shows! (That's ten each for anyone keeping score at home.) They met performing in Wicked when Megan wasn't in the mood to fall in love. But when Barrett lifted her during a rehearsal, and a bolt of electricity shot through her body, she knew it was unavoidable. And around the same time, Barrett turned to a fellow cast mate in the wings and called it: “I'm going to marry her someday.” Perfect timing or not, true love cannot be stopped. Since then, they have worked together and worked apart. They got married, have a son, and still continue to perform, teach, inspire, and balance incredible careers. So what is their secret to having it all? You only have to speak with Megan and Barrett for a moment to see their incredible teamwork and shared perspective. Becoming parents actually solidified their love for their craft even more. We love the way they love each other, their family, and our industry as a whole. We hope you enjoy this episode as much as we do! This Week's SPOTLIGHT ON LOVE comes from an anonymous listener: I recently moved in with my boyfriend and on a few occasions now he has lost his temper and kicked me out of the apartment because he said I wasn't listening to him. Most recently he told me he wants to work through it. Am I setting myself up for disappointment by staying? What is the best way to stay in my power and stay in the relationship? Barrett has played with REM, the Screaming Trees, has recorded Music from the Shipibo Shamans of Peru, the Gwich'in tribes in Alaska, and produced albums with American blues and jazz legends of the Mississippi Delta. The Screaming Tree's 1992 record coming in at no. 17, guitarist Gary Lee Connor joins Bakko to share insights and stories of this classic album as well as the bands entire career and his relationship with the other members. Screaming Trees were an American rock band formed in Ellensburg, Washington in 1985 by vocalist Mark Lanegan, guitarist Gary Lee Conner, bass player Van Conner and drummer Mark Pickerel. Pickerel had been replaced by Barrett Martin by the time the band reached its most successful period. Although widely associated with grunge, the band's sound incorporated hard rock and psychedelic elements. The band released seven studio albums, five EPs, and three compilations. Screaming Trees is known as one of the pioneers of grunge along with the Melvins, Mudhoney, U-Men, Skin Yard, Soundgarden, Green River, and Malfunkshun.[citation needed] Screaming Trees rose to fame as part of the grunge movement of the early 1990s, along with bands such as Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, and Soundgarden and was one of the most successful underground music acts of the 1990s. The band achieved one top ten single on the Modern Rock Tracks charts. Screaming Trees were plagued by extended inactivity due to their problems with making a follow up to Dust. This led to their official breakup in 2000.
Coming in at number 18 on Rolling Stones Greatest Grunge Albums list is the 1995 album from Seattle Supergroup Mad Season, Above. Joining Bakko for this episode is co-host of the Decibel Geek Podcast Aaron Camaro. The two discuss the making of the album, the songs that made up the record and the tragic legacy it holds. Formed in a drug rehab center when Mike McCready checked himself into a Minnesota rehab center. It was there that McCready met local musician John Baker Saunders, and when he returned back to Seattle, called up Layne Staley, who was also at the time attempting to battle problems with substances. With Barrett Martin rounding out the lineup, an undeniable chemistry between all four musicians was discovered at their very first jam session, resulting in bits of music that would eventually become fully realized songs ("Wake Up" and "River of Deceit"). Mad Season was an American rock supergroup[3] formed in 1994 as a side project of members of other bands in the Seattle grunge scene. The band's principal members included guitarist Mike McCready of Pearl Jam, lead singer Layne Staley of Alice in Chains, drummer Barrett Martin of Screaming Trees and bassist John Baker Saunders. Mad Season released only one album, Above, in March 1995. Its first single, "River of Deceit", was a radio success, and Above was certified a gold album by the RIAA in June. #Grunge

If you've listened to this podcast long enough, you know that we are not always in agreement about what works and doesn't work for us on various albums. One of the earliest disagreements was back in Season One when we checked out the 1993 album Four by Seaweed. Thanks to a recent listener suggested poll on our Patreon site, we're back ten years later to check out the 1995 follow-up Spanaway, the band's only release on the Hollywood Records label. While the band faced the tired "sell-out" label for signing to a major, in reality, the band stayed close to what they did well - a bombastic combo of East Coast post-hardcore and PacWest grunge, with some extra nuance thanks to the skilled fingers of Andy Wallace behind the mixing board, as well as guest visits in the drum throne by Barrett Martin (of Screaming Trees) and Matt Cameron (of Soundgarden). The question remains - has anything changed in our diverging opinions? What can I say? Drummer Awareness Month is kicking ass even if it isn't a real thing. On this episode we have yet another amazing drummer in Barrett Martin of Screaming Trees, Mad Season, Barrett Martin Group, Tuatara, Walking Papers, Desert Sessions, and tons more. Barrett is a studied musician and educated in orchestral/classical, jazz, and ethnomusicology and is also well known for producing and performing on many albums as a drummer or percussionist. Don't let the fanciness fool you, though. He's a vicious rock drummer! He's published two books in the last handful of years, 2017's The Singing Earth and 2019's The Way of the Zen Cowboy. Earlier this year, I had the opportunity to bring together five of the most experienced and storied ensemble actors working on Broadway today before a live audience at BroadwayCon. We talked about the shows they originated and the characters they’ve created, but also the disappointments they’ve felt when a show closed. While actors Tracee Beazer, Afra Hines, Kelvin Moon Loh, Barrett Martin and Bret Shuford have each influenced the legacy of musical theatre, they’ve also been a part of shows that just didn’t gain traction with Broadway audiences. I figured with their experience, they must have some perspective about how to handle the disappointment of being in a Broadway flop. Here’s our conversation… Learn more about your ad choices. Creating a character in a new Broadway musical is a gift for any artist, because you get to infuse the show with your own artistry. But it is the lucky few who get to create characters multiple times in multiple musicals. By originating roles in multiple musicals, they helped in a small but meaningful way to shape the legacy of musical theatre for generations to come. ...at least, that’s easy for me to say from the outside. But does it feel like that to the actors who create these ensemble roles? Do they think about the characters they create once the shows close? I posed this question to five of the most experienced and storied ensemble actors working on Broadway today before a live audience at BroadwayCon 2020. Currently performing in Broadway’s Beetlejuice, Chicago, Frozen, Hadestown and Wicked, they each shared stories about the small but mighty influence they’ve had on some of our favorite musicals. In this episode Mike and Mike continue to dig through the September issue, this time discussing featured artist Barrett Martin, who rose to prominence in the '90s with alternative band Screaming Trees but has since ventured into experimental instrumental music with his own project. In the 80s and 90s, Barrett Martin was a member of seminal Seattle bands Screaming Trees, Mad Season, and Skin Yard; but according to Barrett, talking about his life as a rock drummer isn’t all that interesting. Instead, Barrett and Joe have a conversation about the perception of time, the feminine energy of the universe, Barrett’s studies as a Zen monk, the dangers of capitalism, and the nature of music and consciousness.
