Members of Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency now have access to technical systems maintained by United States Citizenship and Immigration Services, according to a recent memorandum viewed by FedScoop. The memo, which was sent from and digitally signed by USCIS Chief Information Officer William McElhaney, states that Kyle Shutt, Edward Coristine, Aram Mogahaddassi and Payton Rehling were granted access to USCIS systems and data repositories, and that a Department of Homeland Security review was required to determine whether that access should continue. Coristine, 19, is one of the more polarizing members of DOGE. He previously provided assistance to a cybercrime ring through a company he operated while he was in high school, according to other news outlets. Coristine worked for a short period at Neuralink, Musk's brain implant company, and was previously stationed by DOGE at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. The memo, dated March 28, asks DHS Deputy Secretary Troy Edgar to have his office review and provide direction for the four DOGE men regarding their access to the agency's “data lake” — called USCIS Data Business Intelligence Services — as well as two associated enabling technologies, Databricks and Github. The document says DHS CIO Antoine McCord and Michael Weissman, the agency's chief data officer, asked USCIS to enable Shutt and Coristine's access to the USCIS data lake in mid-March, and Mogahaddassi requested similar access days later. A bipartisan bill to fully establish a National Science Foundation-based resource aimed at providing essential tools for AI research to academics, nonprofits, small businesses and others was reintroduced in the House last week. Under the Creating Resources for Every American To Experiment with Artificial Intelligence (CREATE AI) Act of 2025 (H.R. 2385), a full-scale National AI Research Resource would be codified at NSF. While that resource currently exists in pilot form, legislation authorizing the NAIRR is needed to continue that work. Rep. Jay Obernolte, R-Calif., who sponsors the bill, said in a written statement announcing the reintroduction: “By empowering students, universities, startups, and small businesses to participate in the future of AI, we can drive innovation, strengthen our workforce, and ensure that American leadership in this critical field is broad-based and secure.” The NAIRR pilot, as it stands, is a collection of resources from the public and private sectors — such as computing power, storage, AI models, and data — that are made available to those researching AI to make the process of accessing those types of tools easier. This week on the show, Desmond and Tom celebrate 875 episodes by watching the four Pet Sematary films. Surely, dead is better than the new ones. On the slab: Pet Sematary, Pet Sematary II, Pet Sematary (2019), and Pet Sematary: Bloodlines. There's singing, rage-induced laughter, a long personal story with only the thinnest connection to the topic, and plenty of other nonsense. So, it's an episode of Dread Media. And, as you know, episodes of Dread Media have songs: "Poison Heart" and "Pet Sematary" by The Ramones, "Shitlist" by L7, "Funeral Derangements" by Ice Nine Kills, "Bloodlines" by Dethklok, and "Pet Sematary" by Kyle Shutt. Made up of core members JD Cronise (guitar, vocals), Kyle Shutt (guitar), and Bryan Richie (bass), The Sword is straightforward, hard hitting, stoner rock at its finest. While they started out as a doom metal band, they evolved into a noticeably deeper hard rock band, never once shedding the Sabbath-inspired pentatonic riffs along the way. Not a band for every occasion, but one that kicks a ton of ass.Closing track: “The Wild Sky” from Used Future (2018)Patreonhttps://www.patreon.com/everyalbumeverMerchhttps://pandermonkey.creator-spring.com/Mike's EP:Pander Monkey on Bandcamp, Spotify, Apple,Instagram:Mike @pandermonkeyAlex @everyalbumalexHistory Tom's stuff:Debut album on Bandcamp, Spotify, AppleSubstackWebsiteMike's Picks:Apocryphon (2012) — Best AlbumAge of Winters (2006) — Personal FavoriteHigh Country (2015) — Worst Album, Least FavoriteAlex's Picks:Age of Winters (2006) — Best Album, Personal FavoriteApocryphon (2012) — Worst Album, Least FavoriteAlbums we discussed this episode…Age of Winters (2006)Gods of the Earth (2008)Warp Riders (2010)Apocryphon (2012)High Country (2015)Used Future (2018)
Metal-heads know that Kyle Shutt is a shredder. It's clear in his band, The Sword's music. Even non-metal-heads that played Guitar Hero knows that he can shred, and have likely played along to his guitar licks on "Freya." But Kyle also has ska roots. At age 15, he played trombone in the Hobbs, New Mexico Christian ska band Ten Betty Zane. When he was 17, he took a 24 greyhound bus ride to see Blue Meanies play a free show in Chicago. And in Austin, he was part of the Blue Meanies (And MU330) street team. On Oct 20, 2022, Kyle's two decade-long group, The Sword, broke up. For his first post-Sword interview, he did what all non-ska bands should do; he chatted about ska with us. Listen as we discuss Kyle's ska roots, break down the hundreds of metal subgenres, talk about meeting Anthony Bourdain during the No Reservations Austin episode, and discuss how he turned Pink Floyd's Dark Side of The Moon into DOOM side of the Moon. We talk about how the metal scene differs from the ska and punk scenes, dish about Nickelback, Dead Milkmen, Zebrahead and Lit, he tells us about singing about poop with his daughter on the Dirty Restaurant of Death side project, and Kyle tells us what it was like to invent an entirely new metal subgenre: Shitgrind. Thank you for listening! Kyle Shutt is an American musician widely known for his guitar playing in the seminal stoner metal band, The Sword, since 2003. From the punk and indie clubs of Austin, TX to arenas all over the world on Metallica's World Magnetic Tour, The Sword climbed the Billboard Top 200 charts to number 17 with their fourth album, Apocryphon. Having played well over a thousand shows, The Sword changed the landscape of heavy metal during the early 2000's and their influence can be heard far and wide in music today. The Sword will be supporting Primus on their A Farwell to Kings tour in 2021. Not one to rest on his laurels, in 2017 Shutt produced Doom Side of the Moon, a heavy metal reimagining of Pink Floyd's greatest hits with an accompanying psychedelic live show spectacular. The completely independent endeavor landed at number 82 on the Billboard Top 200 charts the week of its release. A followup album will be coming in 2022. Shutt turned to crowdfunding in 2018 with the undertaking of a solo album in which he wrote every song and played every instrument over a 14 day period. The Kickstarter campaign went over its goal by 25% and the ensuing support tour saw him share the stage with Electric Six and even included a slot on the Exit 111 Festival. More punk than metal, Shutt's solo career set him apart from being just a stoner rock guitarist and set the stage for many of his other endeavors. A followup solo album will also be arriving in 2022. During the coronavirus pandemic, Shutt kicked his creativity into overdrive with a painting career that saw over 150 paraody versions of himself painted onto copies of his solo album LPs and were sold directly to fans. With subjects from Star Wars characters to superheroes, no pop culture icon was safe from his self portraits. Shutt also launched another successful crowdfunding effort during the pandemic to write the first in his series of lighthearted memoirs, “Written in Stoned”. The Kickstarter campaign once again went over its goal by 25% and the accompanying parody images promoting the book on his social media accounts further cemented his signature brand of humor in the eyes of his fans. At the turn of 2021 The High Way with Kyle Shutt was launched, a self produced podcast featuring musicians and entertainers conversing with Shutt about life in the industry. Guests included Neil Fallon (Clutch), Dave Wyndorf (Monster Magnet) and Buzz Osborne (Melvins) and was immediately embraced by fans. Although he launched the podcast in an admittedly over saturated market, the program quickly rose to number 23 on the Apple Podcast Music Interview Charts in the U.S. as well as other charts all over the world. Having built his fan base without anything but hard work and relentless dedication to his craft in the face of ever changing adversity, Shutt is a unique force in an unsure world and isn't going away any time soon.

Once they get to the albums, they look at an artist who heavily influenced the roots of heavy metal, riff on knockoff Mountain Dew, discuss Hulk Hogan being a bass player and the WWF studio albums, talk about how Joe Walsh apparently lived in a studio in Nederland, CO, uniting the disc golf community through Pepper, and how Jay got an album credit on Kyle Shutt's album before creating some Stevie Wonder/Jeff Beck fan fiction. And to round things off? Time capsules and solo journeys. This week's albums are... There's no doubt ZZ Top trademarked Texas boogie. And over 30 years later, the Sword furthered the Lonestar shuffle's legacy by darkening it. The Austin outfit's 2006 debut Age of Winters combined the rhythmic bounce of Tres Hombres with the power and might of Master of Reality. The cross-pollination of Gibbons and Iommi continued in 2008's Gods of the Earth, with heavier right-hand picking and tempos shading towards thrash-y Priest and Thin Lizzy's "Emerald." Traces of proggy psychedelia, like 2112 Rush and late-'70s Genesis, turned 2010's concept album Warped Riders into a swirling voyage of sci-fi conquest and space exploration, with the music matching the otherworldly narrative. And 2012's Apocryphon saw the band settle into themselves, collectively cherry-picking all the things that worked on the previous three albums. Songs like "Cloak of Feathers" and the title track show their musical certainty. High Country, from three years later, showcases a once-singular-sounding band finding a home between Houston and Birmingham that could be best classified as classic mid-'70s hard rock. And 2018's Used Future—as its cover depicts—shows the band comfortably, calmly, confidently pressing the accelerator of their Bombshell Betty 1952 Buick Super Riviera and racing towards their own horizon. This fall 2021 run had the Sword members—J.D. Cronise (guitar/vocals), Kyle Shutt (guitars), Bryan Richie (bass/keyboards), and Santiago "Jimmy" Vela III (drums)—handling double duty, with a headline tour woven around opening shows for Primus. Before their top-of-the-bill show at Nashville's Mercy Lounge, Shutt, Cronise, and Richie showed PG how consolidating gear (and volume) has helped them sharpen their blade. Kyle Shutt (The Sword). Ahead of the release of the new album, Used Future, by The Sword, Kyle chats to Andrew about the album.
What's up guys and welcome to Episode 71 with Mr. Kyle Shutt from The Sword! So stoked to chat with my man Kyle and hear all his stories from how the Sword has come up and touring with Metallica. This is going to be killer so jump in and I will see you all next week! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
"I feel great man," enthused Kyle Shutt, guitarist for Austin, Texas stoner rockers The Sword ahead of their sixth studio album Used Future to be released on March 23. "It's a really fresh sound for us. We've been a band a really long time and I'm really excited to take this album out on the road. We wrote it mainly in the studio and I still don't know how to play it all yet (laughs). I'm really excited to jump into that aspect of things. When you make an album and you get ready to release it it's like you sit in front of the computer and send emails and stuff but my favorite part is when we finally get to leave all that behind and get out on the road and play some shows."While undoubtedly people will try to classify Used Future based on previous records, Shutt says the album and its contents can be summed up pretty easily. "I would call it rock and roll," he shrugged. "I've been listening to a lot of 60's and 70's music and I think that has come through in my guitar playing a little bit more rather than some of the acrobatic stuff I did in the past. It's all about trying to keep it interesting to ourselves too, you know what I mean? We've never been a band to make an album to please any certain people, we just made the albums that we wanted to hear and we really dig this one. It's a pretty uneasy album with dark topics that we deal with day to day. It's pretty fresh in that regard."After the sonic differences on previous album High Country, The Sword have added more structure and depth to their sound again on Used Future, with Shutt admitting the band needs to continue to grow musically for their own sanity as much as the fans."When we made Apocryphon, our fourth album, that was as far as we could have taken that style of heavy metal," he reflected, "and I think if we would have kept playing and writing songs in C all down-tuned I think that we would have probably lost interest in the band. We decided to tune our guitars up to E flat, mostly because... I was into it because I write a lot of the songs in E so us playing them in E flat made a lot more sense and also when we did JD was able to song lower instead of the other way around which you think it would be."To learn more about the album, including where the title came from, as well as reliving a bit of the past of The Sword and the turning point in the band's music that almost brought it all crashing down tune in to the below audio interview.Kris Peters
