Our first proper episode in a few weeks! Welcome back 2Legs Faithful! For E274 we were honoured to have the esteemed Jeff Slate, a New York City based musician and journalist join us! In this episode we cover a lot of ground! Dylan and Macca's late career albums from 1997 on (Time Out Of Mind & Flaming Pie) being the re-launch for a renaissance for both elder statesmen of rock at the time. "A Complete Unknown", The Beatles solo careers, Wings, Dylan/McCartney's approaches to their archival releases; the standards albums that both have done. Dylan's relationship with George/John and the non-existent one with Macca. We even touch on a little bit of The Who! We dish on how they both sound live currently (double standard ?) and the legacy that both will leave behind. Jeff Slate wrote the liner notes to the 50th Anniversary boxset to Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (2017) as well as the Dylan Bootleg Series Volume 14: More Blood; More Tracks (2018). He has collaborated with Pete Townshend on several projects. He co-wrote a biography on Roy Orbison with Roy's sons. He has also interviewed Bob himself! If this wasn't enough he has his own solo career and he's just recently released his 4th Solo album The Last Day of Summer which features Dave Stewart and Earl Slick. Jeff is known for some controversial "hot takes" and you may hear 1 or 2 in this episode! We love and appreciate honesty here on 2Legs! Baxie talks with 80's Pop/New Wave/MTV sensation Belouis Some! In this interview Belouis (ne: Neville Keighly) talks about his fascinating journey from being a virtually ignored solo artist to recording his first album in 1985 with the likes of Carlos Alomar and Earl Slick (both from David Bowie's band) as well as Bernard Edwards and Tony Thompson from Chic. That first album would yield two international hits (“Imagination” and the title track “Some People). Belouis talks about the release of his controversial music videos and about being handpicked to support Queen on tour the following year. He also talks openly about walking away from music in 1995 and why he made an incredible comeback after 24 years! Belouis Some was to begin touring the US with The Alarm and Jay Ashton's Gene Loved Jezebel later this month! That tour which as to include stops in Northampton and New Haven has been postponed. But the Belouis Some story is so amazing that it needs to be told! Listen on Apple Podcasts, SoundCloud, Spotify, and on the Rock102 website Brought to you by Metro Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram of Chicopee!
Born in Brooklyn and raised in Massapequa, New York, Phantom grew up listening to his parents' jazz records and began playing drums by the age of ten. He took lessons with Mousie Alexander, who played with Benny Goodman, studying jazz and working through books by Jim Chapin and Ted Reed. By the late 1970s, he was playing in bands with his childhood friend, bassist Lee Rocker. They soon joined forces with guitarist Brian Setzer to form Stray Cats.[ When performing with Stray Cats, Phantom did not sit behind a standard drum kit like most drummers, but instead opted to play in a standing position with a minimalist set-up of bass drum, snare drum, hi-hat, and crash cymbal. During downtime from Stray Cats, Phantom played in swing, rockabilly, and jump blues combo The Swing Cats with Rocker and ex-Polecats guitarist Danny B. Harvey,[6] as well as rockabilly and glam rock project Phantom, Rocker & Slick with Rocker and guitarist Earl Slick. In 1985, he appeared with Carl Perkins and a host of other musicians including Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Dave Edmunds and Rosanne Cash for Blue Suede Shoes: A Rockabilly Session in London, England. Phantom also played with Jerry Lee Lewis. He later formed Col. Parker with former Guns N' Roses guitarist Gilby Clarke, releasing the album Rock n Roll Music in 2001.[ Most recently, he has been involved in the eponymous roots-rock band Slim Jim's Phantom Trio; rock-and-roll supergroup Dead Men Walking with Kirk Brandon and Mike Peters, and Captain Sensible;[ and rockabilly supergroup The Head Cat with Danny B. Harvey and the late Motörhead vocalist and bassist Lemmy. He also hosts the Rockabilly Raveup show on Little Steven's Underground Garage. In March 2023, Barnes announced the supergroup The Barnestormers, featuring Barnes, Cheney, Phantom with Jools Holland and Kevin Shirley. A self-titled album was released on 26 May 2023. This is a special non-Petty episode of the podcast. I haven't recorded one in ages, but when former guest Jeff Slate reached out to me to ask if I'd be interested in talking to him about his new single which is out now and the album it's from which will drop in May, it wasn't a hard sell for me as I'm a fan of both his music and his writing. We had a great chat about throwaway lyrics, production differences when you bring in outside voices, and recording an album with people in remote locations during a pandemic lockdown. Jeff's new album features a glittering array of star names, from Dave Stewart to Earl Slick, to Duff McKagan, all the way to OG heartbreaker Ron Blair. Back in 1974, Earl Slick was a 22-year old jobbing session guitarist fast developing a reputation for his supple, searing style and versatility in all idioms. Hired by Bowie to join his Diamond Dogs tour, Slick then had to suddenly pivot from apocalypto-rock to sleek Philly soul at a moment's notice - but acquitted himself so well, he was invited to play on tracks destined for Young Americans before forming the core band, alongside Carlos Alomar, Dennis Davis, George Murray and Roy Bittan to cut the extraordinary Station to Station, in LA, during October 1975. Bringing his charismatic flair to the sessions, Slick rose each time to Bowie's demands for an esoteric sonic palette, turning in one bravura performance after another despite, by his own admission, almost matching Bowie's ridiculous drug consumption levels at the time. Although his boss's directions could be at times gnomic - Bowie instructed him on one occasion to simply play a Chuck Berry riff repeatedly throughout a track - the pair sparked off each other, forging a deep bond. Despite a contretemps between Bowie's management and Slick at the end of the sessions, Earl returned to the Bowie band in 1983 for Serious Moonlight and then again during the early 2000s, when he became again, a key member of the group, up to The Next Day. Today, Station to Station stands out as one of Bowie's finest records, the pivot from Young Americans' funk and soul to the electronic abstractions and experimental textures which would emerge fully with Low. Despite the frenzied sessions, the album's six tracks are each mini-masterpieces. In this episode, the first of two devoted to the album, we take a leisurely stroll down memory lane and begin with Earl's reminiscences of pre-Beatles America, his first audition for Bowie and Visconti, bafflement at the Philly soul era, meeting and forgetting (and then meeting again) John Lennon, and the intense sessions that made up the first side of Station to Station. Thanks to Earl, Oliver and of course the regal Tank for all their time and help in assembling this episode and as ever, please do let me know what you think of our chat and share this podcast far and wide! About Slim Jim Phantom As the legendary drummer for the Stray Cats, Slim Jim Phantom, alongside bandmates Brian Setzer and Lee Rocker, spearheaded the neo-rockabilly movement of the early 80s. With a love for 50's Rock and Roll, the Stray Cats took inspiration from that bygone era and mixed with their youthful energy and aggression to produce the updated hard-edged rockabilly sound that saw them conquer London, Europe and later the U.S., gaining fans among the likes of Keith Richards, Mick Jagger, and Robert Plant along the way. In addition to the Stray Cats, Jim has worked with some of the world's top artists. He has played a part in many successful groups – notably Phantom, Rocker and Slick (featuring long time David Bowie guitarist Earl Slick) which produced two popular albums; and Dead Men Walking, an all-star affair which has boasted original members of The Sex Pistols, The Cult and Big Country among the rotating line-up. Jim also enjoyed a stint playing with the rock-n-roll originator, Jerry Lee Lewis, and even performed in a now-mythological band called The Cheap Dates with acting legend Harry Dean Stanton, one of Jim's longtime pals. Jim has worked on numerous other projects, including his own explosive self-named roots-rock trio, and HeadCat, co-starring Lemmy Kilmister and Danny B. Harvey, and Jim's musical project The Jack Tars, a band co-founded with old friends, and former Dead Men Walking bandmates Captain Sensible and Mike Peters and SJP's long time true rockabilly pal Chris Cheney of Australia's top rockin' band The Living End. He is also deeply committed to charitable works, too: he climbed both Mount Everest and Mount Kilimanjaro for Love Hope Strength Foundation (an organization co-founded by Mike Peters of The Alarm that benefits cancer research). Jim hosts Rockabilly Rave Up on Little Steven's Underground Garage on SiriusXM. He is known as "The Honest Mechanic," where he features new rockabilly acts and the classics. Jim also hosts Slim Jim Phantasy on SiriusXM Fantasy Sports Radio, where he shares his other passion, baseball, and fantasy sports in general.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

After her family moved from the Philippines to California, a teenage June Millington heard a girl playing guitar at school. Soon after, June and her sister Jean were playing acoustic guitars and ukuleles at variety shows. Before long, they were playing in bands, now with electric guitars. After several personnel changes and band names, The Svelts and Wild Honey, they landed a recording contract. They changed the band name to Fanny. People took notice, including David Bowie who referred to Fanny as “extraordinary... as important as anybody else.” Their first time playing a large venue was opening for The Kinks and Procol Harum. Fanny made their mark as a fantastic and much-loved all-female rock group. June Millington has made her mark – she's Artistic Director at Institute for the Musical Arts. IMA runs rock n' roll performance and recording programs for girls and young women. June recently released a new album, Snaphots. Drummer, singer, and songwriter Jerry Gaskill founded the progressive metal band Kings X in 1983. A native of Bridgeton, New Jersey, Gaskill began playing at a young age, forming a band with his father and brother and playing his first gig at the age of seven. After playing in bands throughout high school, he became heavily involved in the Christian faith and enrolled at Evangel University in Springfield, Missouri. Not long after arriving in Springfield, he befriended bassist dUg Pinnick and the two formed a sturdy rhythm section, backing up artists like future Petra singer Greg X. Volz and guitarist Phil Keaggy. After trying out various combos of their own, Gaskill and Pinnick were joined by guitarist Ty Tabor and the trio, then called Sneak Preview, relocated to Houston, Texas. Changing their name to Kings X in 1987, they eventually signed with metal label Megaforce and released their debut, Out of the Silent Planet, a year later. A prog trio with a strong melodic bent and elaborate three-part harmonies, Kings X have enjoyed a successful career with stints on Atlantic, Metal Blade, and InsideOut Music. Gaskill's contributions as drummer, writer, and occasional lead singer are an integral part of Kings X's sound. In 2004, he released his solo debut, Come Somewhere, which was recorded and produced by bandmate Ty Tabor. In addition to his work with Kings X, Gaskill has contributed to side projects by his two bandmates as well as albums by blues guitarist Jay Hooks and New Jersey songwriter Bob Burger. After suffering a heart attack in early 2012, Gaskill's home was destroyed by Hurricane Sandy later that same year. Waylaid by a second heart attack in 2014, he rallied to release his second solo LP, Love & Scars. The album was released in October 2015 and featured guest spots from Billy Sheehan, Phil Keaggy, Earl Slick, and others. In this episode, Jerry talks about: Kings X new album - Three Sides of One Insight to Jerry's time feel Surviving two heart attacks Wedges over in-ear monitors The popularity of Kings X among the musician community Moving away from the Christian music industry in the early days The profound inspiration that John Bonham had on his playing Performing with Bruce Springsteen

On this special interview episode of the Banned Biographies podcast Tom Austin-Morgan talks to Chris Constantinou, who is probably better known to Adam Ant fan as Chris DeNiro - the bassist in Adam's post-Ants solo band. Chris has also played in The Wolfmen with Marco Pirroni, JackieOnAssid, and One Thousand Motels with Rat Scabies of The Damned which cover everything from blues to dance music. In between these he's also played on songs and albums with Annabella Lwin from Bow Wow Wow, Guy Chambers before he started his partnership with Robbie Williams, The Slits, Sinéad O'Connor, Daler Mehndi, Holy Holy, Brant Bjork & Sean Wheeler, Andreas Grega, Nerina Pallot and Earl Slick and Bernard Fowler. He also sometimes plays flute live with The Dandy Warhols. Currently, he is about the release a new mini-album called Femme Power with rapper, Jenna Dickens in a punk rap project called Rude GRL + CC. Femme Power will be available to stream and buy on the 6th of May 2022 and is released through Ingrooves (part of the Universal Music Group). In June, they'll also be releasing a double A-side through Cleopatra Records, the tracks are I'm Good (mixed by Nick Hodgson of the Kaiser Chiefs) and the second track is a version of Adam Ant's Goody Two Shoes. So, keep your eyes peeled for those dropping. On top of all this he also has stories of playing on Top of the Pops, Live Aid, convincing Guy Chambers not to give up on a career in music, and recording in the Palm Desert scene with members of various bands including Masters of Reality, Queens of the Stone Age, etc and all the madness involved in that, supporting King Crimson and Hawkwind as a 13-year-old and so much more As you can see, Chris has lived a hell of a life and I feel like I only just scraped the surface. In 1975, David Bowie moved to Los Angeles and reinvented himself. As rock's greatest chameleon, he had already achieved success as Ziggy Stardust. But this new character would be his darkest yet: the gaunt, theatrical, slick-haired Thin White Duke. And as the Duke, he created the art-rock odyssey Station to Station. It was a record made on no sleep, a dash of black magic, and an avalanche of cocaine. Bowie rarely did press at the time, but he gave a front-row seat to teenage journalist Cameron Crowe, who captured the definitive Bowie interview of the era for Rolling Stone. The latest episode of our Amazon Original podcast Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums unpacks the story of Station to Station. RS Associate Editor Angie Martoccio delves into the making of the album, with Cameron Crowe offering a glimpse at what the Thin White Duke was like in the flesh. Co-producer Harry Maslin, guitarists Earl Slick and Carlos Alomar, and pianist Roy Bittan share memories of the sessions, while Deep Purple bassist Glenn Hughes describes what it was like to have Bowie as a roommate at the time.New episodes of Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums release every Tuesday, only on Amazon Music.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Drummer, singer, and songwriter Jerry Gaskill founded the progressive metal band King's X in 1983. Not long after arriving in Springfield, he befriended bassist Doug Pinnick and the two formed a sturdy rhythm section, backing up artists like future Petra singer Greg X. Volz and guitarist Phil Keaggy. After trying out various combos of their own, Gaskill and Pinnick were joined by guitarist Ty Tabor and the trio, then called Sneak Preview, relocated to Houston, Texas. Changing their name to King's X in 1987, they eventually signed with metal label Megaforce and released their debut, Out of the Silent Planet, a year later. A prog trio with a strong melodic bent and elaborate three-part harmonies, King's X have enjoyed a successful career with stints on Atlantic, Metal Blade, and InsideOut Music. Gaskill's contributions as drummer, writer, and occasional lead singer are an integral part of King's X's sound. In 2004, he released his solo debut, Come Somewhere, which was recorded and produced by bandmate Ty Tabor. In addition to his work with King's X, Gaskill has contributed to side projects by his two bandmates as well as albums by blues guitarist Jay Hooks and New Jersey songwriter Bob Burger. Episode 47 of season 4 aired on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on Thursday 25 Nov. We kicked off 'nicely' as requested by one of the ladies in the office. Nicely lasted about 2 minutes and then we were off and running with Manowar. We went onto the SA music early and took a listen to a track of Albert Frost's new release called Sacred Sound. Johnathan Martin got a chance next with '7 Years Bad Luck'. In between, we had a bit of Queensrÿche and Gary Moore before getting back to South Africa and two of our most iconic SA bands, Dog Detachment and Asylum Kids. The Whatsapp line comments confirmed the wisdom of this selection. We took in a lekker little early '70s twosome with Free's track 'Remember' and Elton John with 'Razor Face' off the fantastic Madman Across the Water album. A highlight for me was the new release from Pirates of Radio called 'Parasite'. I reckon it's their best release so far and you should wake up with it stuck in your head. Things took a turn for the weird with Electric Six's 'Danger, High Voltage' which was fun to hear again. Then it was time for a bit of Metal courtesy of Iron Maiden Judas Priest and Hell Fire. The Jesus and Mary Chain, Falling Mirror, John Mellencamp and Earl Slick with a superb cover of Sam Cooke's ' A Change is Gonna Come' provided a bit of respite before we built all the way back up to Warrior Soul, In Flames and the phenomenal Parkway Drive. All in all, it was pretty, pretty, pretty good. Artists featured: Joe Bonamassa, Manowar, Ace Frehley, Boston, Triumph, Devils Train, Blackberry Smoke, W.A.S.P., Albert Frost, Johnathan Martin, Burning Rain, Gary Moore, Massive Wagons, Queensrÿche, Dog Detachment, Asylum Kids, Def Leppard, Black Sabbath, Free, Elton John, My Chemical Romance, Linkin Park, Pirates of Radio, Electric Six, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Hell Fire, Metallica, The Jesus And Mary Chain, Falling Mirror, John Mellencamp, Springbok Nude Girls, Earl Slick, The Cult, Joan Jett, Warrior Soul, In Flames, Parkway Drive, Bob Dylan.

I kick off this episode with new releases that I dig, which includes Snapped Ankles's Forest Of You Problems, Desperate Journalist's Maximum Sorrow!, Montener the Menace's Anyone Home?, Earl Slick's Fist Full Of Devils, and Possum's Lunar Gardens. My special guests include Mikey, Jack & Detrick of Orange County's alt/hard rock trio Desert of Talking Shadows! They join me on BRANDI IS GOING TO HELL to discuss how they formed, their debut album Foreshadowing released earlier this year, their success & milestones with their 2018 single “Crucify,” and what's to come! I also fire some silly rapid fire questions!
Earl Slick is walking, talking, breathing rock and roll history. Today he talks of vinyl, his times with David Bowie, the John Lennon 'Double Fantasy' sessions, clarifies rumours & shares stories, as well as the tale of his new LP "Fist Full of Devils". Nate Goyer is The Vinyl Guide and discusses all things music and record-related.

Derek and Kieran are joined by Belouis Some. Best known for the classic single ‘Imagination', the accompanying boundary breaking promotional video included full frontal nudity. Over his three albums, Belouis worked with a stellar roll call of musicians including Bowie guitarists Carlos Alomar and Earl Slick, Guy Fletcher of DIRE STRAITS and CHIC's Bernard Edwards and Tony Thompson. After a break of 25 years, Belouis Some has recently returned to the live arena and we spoke about his career, the challenges of getting signed, working with the late iconic PINK FLOYD artist Storm Thorgerson, plus his early links with DURAN DURAN and a fledgling TEARS FOR FEARS and our mandatory Top of the Pops story. Let Christy Take It are proud to present Belouis Some.
Our latest chapter chronicles The Thin White Duke, David Bowie's most infamous and unsettling character. He makes his grand entrance on the title track to Bowie's landmark 1976 album ‘Station to Station.' Today we're visited by Mr. Earl Slick, the man response for much of the album's incendiary guitar work. Earl is a bonafide rock legend, and Bowie is just a part of his remarkable resume. That's him on John Lennon and Yoko Ono's ‘Double Fantasy,' and he's also played with David Coverdale, Robert Smith, Ian Hunter, and so many others. He was just 21 when he got the gig to join Bowie on 1974's Diamond Dogs tour, filling the lead guitar role recently vacated by Mick Ronson. He went on to become one of Bowie's go-to guitarists and most frequent collaborators, playing on ‘Young Americans,' Station to Station,' ‘Heathen' ‘Reality,' and ‘The Next Day.' He also performed with Bowie onstage for an incalculable number of live gigs spanning thirty years. Jordan spoke to Earl about Bowie, the Beatles — and lots and lots of guitars. When most people think about bass players and The Sex Pistols, their minds immediately gravitate to Sid Vicious. Well, they shouldn't. MANY years before and MANY years after Sid had come and gone, Glen Matlock handled the bottom-end for the British punk innovators. He was a founding member of the band and re-joined them for several reunions starting in 1996. The big hits The Sex Pistols are known for? Yeah, those were co-written by Matlock well before Vicious picked up the bass. As a matter of fact, out of the 12 tracks embodying the band's only true album, "Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's The Sex Pistols," 10 of those are credited as co-written by Matlock. After his stint in The Sex Pistols, Matlock moved on to play with many well-known artists that have made a lasting impact on rock history. Some of those include Iggy Pop and The Damned. He also played in supergroups with members of The Clash, Generation X, The Alarm, New York Dolls, and Spandau Ballet. Glen even played in a band WITH Sid Vicious after the demise of The Sex Pistols. Matlock has went on to have a successful and fullfilling solo career and also partners up with different acquaintances as time and pandemics allow. His latest pairing is with guitarist Earl Slick. For those who don't know, Slick is known for performing with big names like David Bowie, John Lennon, Yoko Ono, Robert Smith, John Waite, Tim Curry, and David Coverdale. He also has several of his own solo recordings. The limited-edition 7-inch record Slick and Matlock just released contains 2 tracks and is available in orange and black vinyl through Bandcamp. The songs include an original acoustic version of a tune off Glen's upcoming album entitled "Consequences Coming." The other treat is a cover of K.D. Lang's "Constant Craving." I had the delightful opportunity to sit down with Glen Matlock and talk about how he's spent the pandemic, what he's up to, a VERY tiny bit about The Sex Pistols, hanging out with his neighbor Paul Weller, and his plans for the future. I failed to mention, we also talked about movies, music, and more. Sit down and enjoy this great chat with a true legend of rock and roll history. For more information on Glen, visit his official website at www.glenmatlock.co.uk.

At the start of this episode Lucy Boulter describes herself as:“a perfectly average middle-aged woman who has achieved relative success in a reasonably ordinary life”For the next hour or so she then regales us with a series of fascinating stories (and great musical choices) that clearly show there is nothing average or ordinary about Lucy. From being a child roadie at the age of 7, having her first newspaper front page spread at 16, driving massive change management at BT , starting a new business venture with her partner Emma to interviewing Paul Young , Tony Visconti and Earl Slick in recent years, she has ( to use her own phrase) consistently punched above her weight in a really impressive and interesting way. In addition to all of the above Lucy is a dedicated Bowie devotee and has a series of fascinating and insightful stories about the great man and her life long interest in him and his work. Finally, part of Lucy’s motivation for coming on to Music Talks is that she is celebrating her 50th birthday this year so she’s only just getting started. I for one cannot wait to see the next chapter of this story …….an episode not to be missed During this episode we referenced 43 different songs and artists who are included in this playlist . Welcome to episode 9 of Stayin Alive with Jesse Smith, a podcast about creative people how they weather the storm of a life of the road.Today’s guest is one of the reasons I started this podcast in the first place. A couple of years ago I was given the opportunity to go on a speaking tour as an interviewer which was a brand new discipline for me and it resulted in two tours on the road with one of the world’s greatest guitarists. He is undoubtably one of the best ever rock and roll side men, having played with David Bowie on and off for almost Forty years and also on John Lennon’s last two studio albums. He’s also written and recorded with Glen Matlock, Robert Smith, David Coverdale and Jim Diamond to name a few. We’ve become really good friends over the last few years and I really hope you enjoy our conversation. Today’s guest is the one and only - Earl Slick.Next’s week’s guest is another incredible guitar player and one of my favourite episodes I’ve recorded, she is best known for playing guitar for Kate Nash and Get Cape Wear Cape Fly and also helped create and incredible charity called Girls Rock London and is one of the mot inspirational women I know, so make sure you tune in for my conversation with Linda Buratto. You can also find us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/stayinalivepod/ and you go one step further and head over to Apple Podcasts and give us a 5* review. This was a Jesse Smith Production.Music by Neal X, Mark Garfield and Me.If you or your business is interested in sponsoring the show, or if you’d just like to say ‘hi’ you can get in touch by emailing stayinalivepod@gmail.comSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/stayin-alive-with-jesse-smith. Welcome to Episode 8 of Stayin’ Alive with Jesse Smith, a podcast about creative people and how they navigate through the highways of the creative arts industries. To discuss the issues facing the arts sector I was very grateful to be able to chat with Tom Watson – former deputy leader of the Labour Party and former Shadow Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport. He also had a major role in the News International Phone Hacking scandal by bringing events at the News Of The World Public.Tom retired from Politics in November 2019 and is now the Chair of UK Music. UK Music are an umbrella organisation that represent the music industry by working with The Musician’s Union, Help Musicians, PRS, PPL and many other industry bodies and lobby the government on their behalf with a collective voice.Personally, Tom speaks openly about how he managed to reverse his Type 2 Diabetes condition through diet and exercise and published a book about it called Downsizing that we discuss in the pod.He was a true gent and I really hope you enjoy our conversation. My guest for Episode 8 of Stayin’ Alive is Tom Watson. Thanks again to Tom Watson, I’d also like to give a special mention and thanks to my great friend Tom Wilcox. For more on Tom or to buy his book Downsizing visit https://tom-watson.com/Next week’s guest is one of the greatest sidemen in the history of rock and roll. He was long time guitarist of David Bowie, John Lennon & Yoko Ono and has also collaborated with the likes of Robert Smith, David Coverdale, Glen Matlock and Jim Diamond. So make sure you hit subscribe and look forward to my conversation with Earl Slick. In the Music Real E41, the team have an early morning chat with Sex Pistols, Bassist and Song Writer Mr Glen Matlock. Stuck in lockdown in the UK since March after COVID forced the cancellation of his US tour, Glen had an unexpected house guest – Earl Slick, sideman guitarist for David Bowie and John Lennon – stuck in the UK thanks to lockdown. The two of them have been entertaining fans in their new digital show Me and Him. We had a great chat with Glen about the state of the UK, politics after Brexit and the future for music over there – and let's face it – worldwide. And we had a nice surprise appearance from Slick at the end of our chat! With a new album out later this year, we cannot wait to see Glen and Slick back in Australia in 2021. In the meantime, check out Glen's album Good To Go! https://themusicreal.com.au/2020/06/11/glen-matlock-stuck-in-lockdown-with-earl-slick/

The one where 9-42 meets Earl Slick. Earl is a guitarist best known for his collaborations with David Bowie, John Lennon, Yoko Ono, and Robert Smith. He has also worked with other artists including John Waite, Tim Curry and the New York Dolls. He is currently in The International Swingers with Clem Burke & Glen Matlock... ...and that is how we managed to get an interview with him. As lockdown hit and commitments cancelled, Earl was left a stranded guest, resident in Glen's house in London. We chatted too Earl about playing with David Bowie, then not playing with David Bowie and then playing with David Bowie again. We talked about playing on the biggest stages, guitar straps and painting Glen's living room. The one where 9-42 chewed the fat with a Teenage Sex Pistol. Where do you start when trying to sum up Glen's career. An original member of the Sex Pistols, he co-wrote most of the seminal first album, before leaving to form The Rich Kids with Midge Ure. He has also played with Primal Scream and the Faces, and is currently in The International Swingers with Clem Burke & Earl Slick. So it was a real lockdown privilege to have a natter with Glen Matlock as he talked about the effect it was having on his working life and what it might mean for the future. He also agreed to have a go at our five quick-fire question challenge, though he took it at his own pace. Earl has been a guitarist for David Bowie, John Lennon and Yoko Ono, Robert Smith, and is about to head to the UK with Glen Matlock for a handful of dates. Original Sex Pistols bassist Glen Matlock, whose 45-year career includes a wealth of experience with countless other bands and artists, will release his solo album Good To Go on Mighty Village Records. The project was recorded in London and New York, and features his longtime friends and collaborators Earl Slick, best known for his work with David Bowie, and Slim Jim Phantom of the Stray Cats.Matlock was only 16 when he joined the Pistols, and co-wrote such iconic punk songs of theirs as Pretty Vacant,Anarchy In The UK and ‘God Save The Queen. By the release of their seminal Never Mind The Bollocks, Here’s The Sex Pistols album.Matlock went on to work with an extraordinary array of musicians including Iggy Pop, the Dammed, Primal Scream, Mick Jones, Midge Ure, Gary Kemp, Ronnie Wood and such punkn contemporaries as Rusty Egan, Mike Peters, Tom Robinson and Kirk Brandon. When it comes to music, I like some actual music in the music!” says Matlock of the album. I’m pleased with it, It’s Good To Go. It’s quite personal, but there are some tongue-in-cheek funny bits in it. I didn’t set out to write a Sex Pistols album and fail miserably. In my live show I do a bit of everything to keep everybody including myself happy. On record I’m a long way from that.”

His band with David Bowie sideman Earl Slick, and his current band Jeff Slate & Friends, are both mainstays of the Northeast music scene. I met Jeff in Forrest Hills, NY this past Summer at a Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers show, while I was grabbing my interviews with Greg Looper and Chris Adamson.
