Derek Sheen is a masterful comedian, storyteller, cook, musician- is there nothing he can't do?? We crossed paths a few years ago at Altercation Comedy Festival and this year at the Alaska B4UDie Fest. We did a mini episode for the fest and decided we HAD to do a full length because Derek is a lover of all things horror that comes from a rich family history of horror appreciation. For this episode we dove into Talk to Me. We chatted about peer pressure, grief, addiction and good old fashioned ghost stories. Honestly, nothing would be more terrifying than to become a ghost and spend eternity being a party trick for teenagers. Derek is a delight and you'll love this episode! Check out Derek's projects and dates here: https://www.dereksheenrulz.com

Thank you for listening! Derek Sheen is a cuddly mess of insecurities and a stand-up comedian from Seattle. He has released four albums on Stand Up! Records, most recently 2020's Macho Caballero. Reviewer Richard Lanoie of The Serious Comedy Site said that Sheen "more than proves there are still some great, original, and intelligently dark comics out there. Drew Hunt of the Chicago Reader noted that Sheen's comedy can be "highly personal or emotionally transparent" and compared him to Brian Posehn for his "delivery and lucid, streetwise worldview”. Sheen wanted to be a comic from an early age. In third grade, he recited an entire George Carlin album side for show-and-tell. He first performed standup at nine, and at an open mic at 13. He played music professionally for 15 years before returning to standup at age 35. His comedy often touches on personal topics such as his depression and alcoholism. A gifted, one of a kind storyteller, Sheen has become a secret favorite among comedy fans across the globe. He has a gift for mining the dark depths of the human condition and excavating interesting and very personal stories, filled with shocks, laughter and hope. He is also a hopeless and gigantic idiot. Catch Derek performing in my Sideyard on Nov 18th!

The Jerks are joined by local legend, Derek Sheen. What if Hitler was funny? Jacks Granny spoiled him rotten. The boys talk about food memories that trigger positive memories. Derek likes to cook and is maybe putting out a cookbook. Male fragility.Derek takes music seriously and doesn't like to meld art worlds. Derek drops some wisdom on the jerks about not losing your mind doing comedy. When you mix artists and commerce together things go sideways. Being a nice person helps in life. Derek started comedy at 35 and give The Jerks some hope. Seattle needs a bigger comedy club. NYC is a daunting task. Are The Jerks too old to suffer in NYC. Twitter is for chumps. Dustin and Nick are joined by comedian Derek Sheen to discuss System Of A Down's sophomore album Toxicity. Now, in a post-COVID-19 world, you can experience J's comedy in Zoom form and via Youtube videos. Details and links for both are available at jjonescomedy.com.

Derek Sheen is a comedian. From his website: "Derek Sheen is a cuddly mess of insecurities, a gifted, one of a kind, storyteller. He’s quickly becoming a favorite among comedy fans all over the globe! He’s toured with Patton Oswalt, Brian Posehn, Janeane Garofolo and Rory Scovel! His debut album “Holy Drivel” was recorded by iconic metal producer Matt Bayles (Minus the Bear, Mastodon, Isis)" Since then Derek's pumped out his newest album, "Tiny Idiot", and is working on a book. Derek's father was involved in organized crime. He specialized in enforcement, drug trafficking, and between stints in and out of jail served as a Government informant. Derek did not meet his father until his 16th Birthday, where he unknowingly served as his father's accomplice. At home, Derek had an abusive step-dad, and later, due to school not being for him Derek's mother unknowingly sent him to a Scientology boarding school. This was all before a Driver's License! Derek's had quite a life, we unpack some of it. Learn what it would really be like to have a Tony Soprano figure as a father! Also in this episode: Derek and Ron Placone met back in Seattle where Derek was one of the vets on the comedy scene and Ron was just getting started. Ron remembers times in the scene and early days on the road in the Northwest. Krish Mohan rocks a FFON. Angie Dorin checks in with a Monkey Minute.

Kris, Kenny, and Jeremy took a roadtrip down to the Memphis Comedy Festival and had an amazing time. In between sessions of eating their own weight in barbecue, they recorded an episode of the podcast with some great comics. The theme was stories about doing comedy. First up was Chris Sanders (@Chrisrsanders) telling a story about helping a friend film a sketch at the Chicago Trump rally. Next up, Jenn Welch told a story about her first time performing improv for an audience, and it gets more awkward from there. Jenn can be found on twitter at @JennWelchNow and also runs a few shows in NYC. She brought her Standup Showdown show to Memphis, and it was a blast. Then Kevin White told a story about a really awkward situation in Kansas City. Kevin hosts an awesome show and podcast in Chicago called Arguments & Grievances. It's really great comedy debates, and you should check it out. After that, Mike Albanese told a story about being a dumb open micer doing dumb things with other open micers. He's going to be at Arlington Cinema Drafthouse with Nick DiPaulo on Apriul 29 & 30. Lastly, Derek Sheen told a story about comedy at a winery. He has an album called Tiny Idiot coming out on Stand Up! Records releasing May 6th.
Movie Meltdown - Episode 338 This week we talk comedy, road trips and lots and lots of horror with comedian Derek Sheen. And while we figure out just where he took a left turn into a time hole, we also discuss... black and white monster movies, Phantasm, immediate descent into madness, Zacherle, Shock Waves, bag pipes, Scott Mosier, what is the marketability of this movie, Tom Savini, a car is essentially a bathroom without a toilet, Slumber Party Massacre, I just feel like there's something in the film that's going to manifest itself in the room, Zelda Rubinstein, the world was yours, John Carpenter, Maniac, Tales From The Crypt, Don't Look Now, White of the Eye, I've always wanted to be on-stage, you found a bunch of reels of 8mm can and this is what happened, Sleepaway Camp, the biggest horror now is trust, Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things, From Beyond, self-aware horror, Chris Hardwick, Friday the 13th, The Devil's Rain, I shouldn't be playing this in my house... something malevolent is in the film - and I don't like it, Demons, having faith in the filmmaker, When a Stranger Calls, Asylum, Mondo Cane, having perfect pitch, understanding isolation, Black Christmas, The Witch, Matthew Fox, Powerball winners, Let's Scare Jessica to Death, he's a giant baby man, people are trying too hard to create content, The Accused, you're given the gift of doubt, Basket Case, it's all about the eyes, horror and suspense are very different, Leatherface on his downtime, what scares people is the unknown, Bone Tomahawk, this sad gorgeous cadenza, it's like a long-form Ramones video, Beyond the Door, crippling stage fright, there was no other distraction... other then the darkness, if you walk into it as a horror movie - it's going to break your brain, Martha Splatterhead, The Sentinel, compartmentalization, Forensic Files, what scares people is what's beyond the veil, Kill List, horror is dread, full of self-loathing, well I have to go to bed now, making chili out of people, an STD metaphor, the Serbian porn industry, it was just more claustrophobic to be watching movies like that knowing that the entire world was asleep, reconciling grief, Brewster's Millions, they confuse murder with horror, Anthony Jeselnik, you can't have a zombie apocalypse, at least I'm not filled with demons, B.o.B's theory, there isn't any alone time, weirdly titillated, birthing torsos, whistling past the graveyard, the closet door slowly opening, when you leave the theater it makes you look at every single person on the street, the Eyes Wide Shut syndrome, filled with asbestos, blood and gravity, when you remove reason completely... that's where horror comes in. Spoiler Alert: Some end of the movie spoilers for Friday the 13th, Sleepaway Camp, Session 9... oh and Derek completely destroys the myth of a zombie apocalypse. You have been warned! "Give me something that permeates the very fabric of my belief system." For more of Derek's comedy, records and tour dates, go to: http://derektime.com/

Comedy at it's finest with Derek Sheen
Apologies in advance to anyone who believed me when, during the last edition of Succotash - that would be Epi15, that there was going to be a "regular" clip-heavy version this time. As luck, the Fates and some long-ago reserved vacation time would have it, I'm vacationing in Honolulu, Hawaii, as I both record this epi and bang out this blog entry. Since, therefore, I'm about 2400 miles from my beloved Studio P (and my equally beloved executive producer Joe Paulino and his audio magicianship), I'm opting to run an interview as the core of this edition. Jon Manfrellotti It's a great interview with a longtime friend of mine, comedian/actor Jon Manfrellotti. You might recognize him from his recurring roles on TV, either as Gianni on Everybody Loves Raymond or as Manfro, the bookie from Men Of A Certain Age. I talked to Jon about his standup career as well as his acting work, then we also veer into his favorite hobby: playing guitar. There are parallels between getting into a comedy career and starting a podcast, as well as maintaining both, and we hit on that a little bit, too. In addition to the interview, I do manage to get in five podcast clips and a Burst O' Durst, so it's like presents under the tree. I even run 15 minutes over with this episode to give you a little extra Succotash for the holidays! Here's who's up this time around... Affirmation Nation One of my favorite podcasts to come on the scene this year is Seth Morris' character of Bob Ducca and his short daily attempts to make life just a little bit better. Check out Bob's Christmas wish list, then go catch him over on Earwolf.com and on iTunes. Wrong Foot Podcast Podcasting is a great medium for audio sketches and you'll find the folks behind theWrong Foot Podcast stretching the envelope. They can be found at WrongFoot.net and on iTunes. Delicious Mediocrity We've featured Derek Sheen and Douglas Gale before, but that's because they put out a nice, consistent product when it comes to interviews and commentary. With a comedy angle steeped in the Northwest, catch more at DeliciousMediocrity.com and iTunes. The Gentlemen's Club Host Caleb Bacon has cranked out the episodes and features a mixed bag special of guests, ranging from strippers and porn stars to comedians, actors and sports celebrities. The clip we include here features adult film actress Randi Wright talking about her antics on TV. Get yourself a free pass at GentlemensClubPodcast.com or on iTunes. The Dhead Factor In a previous appearance, these guys from Australia's capital were only doing a rambling commercial - here's an actual clip. I was recently interviewed by Jabs, one of the Dheads, and you can catch that show and their others at TheDheadFactor.tumblr.com and iTunes. We finish off the show with our regular feature, the Burst O' Durst, done up by politicomic Will Durst, who spouts off on his own site at WillDurst.com and on Twitter as @WillDurst - follow him! You can also follow us, @SuccotashShow and, if you REALLY want to help a podcast out, jump up our listing in the podcast section of iTunes and rate us and/or click that li'l ol Donate button the right hand side of the page...that one...right there. No, no...THERE. We'd really appreciate it. My New Year's Resolution is to deliver a full-on clip-heavy episode of Succotash first thing in 2012. Until then, however, get busy with Epi16 and please be sure to pass the Succotash. — Marc Hershon
