In episode 65 of the podcast I speak with the incredibly talented Chilean-American multi intrumentalist and producer - Alain Johannes. Easily one of my favorite musicians, Alain and has had an amazing music career working with artists like Queens Of The Stone Age, Them Crooked Vultures, PJ Harvey, Arctic Monkeys, No Doubt and late greats Chris Cornell and Mark Lanegan. He also had an amazing debut into the 'band scene' along side numerous eventual Red Hot Chili Peppers members called "What Is This" and eventually went on to form and co-lead the amazing band 'Eleven' alongside his very talented wife Natasha Shneider until her unfortunate passing. We talk the Sound City players, Desert Sessions, engineering, production, songwriting, band life and so much more, check it out.For more on Alain, his story and his music, please visit - www.alainjohannes.comFor more on Travis Marc or the Musicians Mentor, please visit - www.musicians-mentor.comFor our partnership with the lovely folks over at Soundbrenner, please visit - https://www.soundbrenner.com/pages/affiliate-travis-marc
The life of Michael Parenti is truly extraordinary, as he witnessed two significant cultural movements that changed the word. Growing up in Malibu, he went to school with the likes of Sean Penn and Charlie Sheen, met a young Madonna before she was an international star, hung out in Bob Dylan's house, and saw live acts like Nirvana and Red Hot Chilli Peppers long before MTV made them famous. As an internet entrepreneur, he became involved with the Bitcoin Foundation and also saw the early days of Ethereum. He attended hundreds of events, spoke with some of the people who are completely unapproachable today, and found himself in the middle of something magical, naive, and revolutionary. In this episode, we talk about the backstage politics that Michael Parenti witnessed and what it was like to believe in the cyhpherpunk dream more than a decade ago. ...A data-heavy slacker-upload episode for you - too much to do, so go do it. We did: wrasslin' animals and eating' bears, recalling Fords and Fords and DEIs and Toyotas and Fords and GMs and pickups and some junk in the trunk, as well as recalling a run from El Paso to Wisco in one of BFGoodrich's fleet of jacked-up Suburbans, and revisiting the Garage Hour rule that if you dig two holes in England (or Europe) there will be a skeleton or a bomb in at least one of them. There's also a Dude Food shout-out to liverwurst, a warning tear for DeWalt (what's trying to pull a Bud Light), and a serious discussion about how artificial reinsertion of apex predators into environments from which they've absconded (ie: Colorado's wolves, which are being eaten by cougars, and Italian bears, which are eating liberals). More goodies: cheap akiya homes in Japan, awesome actors in "Copland" and "Demolition Man", terrible flame throwing pinko battery deaths from scooters and other electric deathtraps worldwide, essential electronics repair and the necessity of having a wiring and circuitry guy in your stable, plus Sinister, Fishbone, Cheap Dates, Alien Faktor, U2 (really), Earthlings?, Desert Sessions, Butthole Surfers, L.S.G., Sausage, The Dead Elvi and Incubus.

Es melden sich zu Wort: Ty Segall, Desert Sessions, Jack White, Red Fang, Voice of the Seven Thunders, Zu, Melvins, All Them Witches, The Midnight Ghost Train und Woven Hand. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

This week on the show, our old friend Derek and our new friend Beth join us to discuss what's next for Team Deth, and it turns out that Team Deth is moving to Kuwait to set up the region's first permanent haunted attraction. The best part is that you can follow along on their journey by supporting them at americanhaunters.com. Then Desmond goes solo on a rundown of the things he's watched lately including The Fall of the House of Usher, 30 Coins, and When Evil Lurks. Songs included: "Monster in the Parasol" by Desert Sessions, "Haunted Forever" by Sumerlands, "Cursed" by Creeping Death, and "Desert Search for Techno Allah" by Mr. Bungle. Scream is one of these iconic bands that we all heard about when we were young, apart from our walking encyclopedia Knut, who probably witnessed many of the DC Hardcore bands back in his 20s and 30s, but for the regular people among us the early DC years and the bands that came from that area and which were on Dischord or later on Jade Tree are legendary. Minor Threat, State of Alert, Scream - the latter even released the first full-length ever on Dischord. Now they're back! With a new full-length! With collaborations galore and with great songs! And … with enough time on Pete Stahl's hands to sit down and talk with us about many, many things! Enjoy another interview with a “living legend”! The latter is a term that Pete doesn't like and he explains why in this interview, but we also talk about the variability of songs, moods and genres on DC Special. He also explains why the record is neither only a reflection of our times nor only a trip down nostalgia lane. He explains his love for Dead Kennedys and even why he - a DC guy - now likes the Dodgers and which kind of music he likes to listen to when going on a hike. Enjoy these more than 50 minutes with a man who has played with the Sunn O))) guys, with most of the Desert Sessions folks and even with someone Pete more or less discovered, a guy called Dave Grohl - might have heard about him, guy might make it big one day.
Pure Spectrum CBD Plays Ball with a Major League Baseball Team as we speak with their CEO Daniel Huerter. It's also a new spot for Royals fans to learn about Dan Huerter's Pure Spectrum CBD. Pure Spectrum will have ambassadors at the site to educate fans for free during all the Royals home games.Plus, we have a great discussion on How Branding Is Much More Than Just Marketing with Andreas (“Dre”) Neumann, Jushi Holdings' Chief Creative Director and GRAMMY® award winner. Dre is the Chief Creative Director of Jushi Holdings and has been at the forefront of advertising, branding, entertainment, and technology for the last three decades. In addition to being a known and respected leader in the creative and technology arenas, Dre is known for his photography and work with artists such as Queens of the Stone Age, Iggy Pop, Foo Fighters, ZZ Top, Lenny Kravitz, and many others. He has also been cited as one of the world's top rock photographers. In 2020, Dre was awarded a GRAMMY® for Best Album Package, recognized for his photographic contribution to Desert Sessions Vols. 11 & 12, which has been described as one of the most mythical, longest-running rock ‘n' roll mixtape odysseys in existence. It's the sixth compilation album by the desert rock supergroup Desert Sessions, an art project of Queens of the Stone Age frontman, Josh Homme.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

If it's snowing igloos and narwhales outside, you might as well do something in (let your home be a canvas for your genius). The Gearhead Consultancy also knows fine homeownerin', so this episode's got three-way switches (fix the travellers, don't be one), municipalities' rules for wiring (no dimmers for you), firewood and gas logs (because chainsaw), making your utility drawer an expansion of capability (no junk so no junk drawer), not trusting the web (buy a book, maybe even the old Reader's Digest bible), and fixing scuffs in hardwood (markers!). Random rock and/or roll: Zach Wilde, Candy Snatchers, Fun Lovin' Criminals, Chainsaws & Children, Metallica, Puny Human, AC/DC, Orgy, Desert Sessions, Hydroponix, Machines of Loving Grace & Blazing Haley!

No, it's not Dude Food, it's good tortillas versus crap fuel, plus corn, cane and calories, as well as the mailman's budget sticking its foot up the bureaucrats' exhaust port. You can't keep down this much gearhead goodness - it's the second of May's Lost Garage Hours. What else wasn't lost? A PO FU to President Hair-sniff McBranden, some fine riffs (and whose are they?), a gearhead goodbye to classic testadura Fred Ward, Pothole Pete still wants to take away your car, and a not terribly massive black hole hiding in your back yard. ...More than candy: Zepplin, Korn, Vultures, Testament, Puny Human, STP, Zombie (s) and the Desert Sessions (off Hostus Maximus Justin Fort's #3 Hillclimb Mix).

These two episodes from May almost took a long walk off a short hard drive, but thanks to doing stuff with our brains, hereyago: Tesla's legacy issues with batteries and taxpayers, electric cars (replacement or runabout?), chicks from Georgia parking on the tracks (and the return of the bodycount conundrum), committing auto theft with a Ford, a big foot and cheap tech, two-step security and the old-school LS400 fob, "I, Robot", plus a drive-by from the Air Force Thunderbirds and one Commander "Slappy". There's more goodness: Desert Sessions and the gang - Kyuss, Fatso Jetson, K.D. Lang, Screaming Trees and "Girl Boy Tom", plus Frankenstein Big Bird.

As part of our Desert summer special, today I have a special guest who is very close to my heart. I met Ted Quinn 11 years ago after I arrived in California from my native France. We were just starting Yard Of Blondes, our band, and we dreamed of playing in the desert. This trip was sparked by one particular place, the Rancho de la Luna. The legendary studio has been the home of numerous amazing artists including Queens of the Stone age, Kyuss, Arctic Monkey, Earthlings, Mark Lanegan, Victoria Williams, and many more. We also all remember QOTSA's Josh Homme's infamous Desert Sessions with guests such as PJ Harvey, Twiggy Ramirez, Dave Catching, Nick Oliveri, Josh Freese, Chris Goss, Alain Johannes, Les Claypool and more. That night, we had no idea we would bump into someone very close to that universe. Ted Quinn was hosting an open mic at Pappy And Harriet's, which would become one of the country's most beloved venues. He was kind enough to sign us up and we ended up having one of the most memorable nights of our lives. In addition to finding a haven for art, we also found an amazing community that revolved around Teddy Quinn. While growing up, he spent time in Hollywood and Laurel Canyon, acting in movies and TV series like Land Of The Giant, but also playing in bands like Telekin and Ministry Of Fools. It was during those formative years that Ted met Fred Drake, a Texas transplant drummer who was to establish the now iconic Rancho De La Luna. They played music together and often traveled to Joshua Tree to escape the noise of Hollywood. Fred founded the Rancho in 1993 after they decided to stay there permanently. Dave Catching, who would become the guitarist for Eagles Of Death Metal, joined him soon after. Unfortunately, Fred was HIV positive and got brain cancer. He passed away twenty years ago on June 20th, 2002. The week prior to his passing, Teddy and Fred looked through his tapes and he personally selected about 60 unreleased songs he loved. To commemorate Fred Drake's 20th passing anniversary, Teddy reached out to his family and Dave Catching (who still runs the studio) and together they decided it was time to release new music from Fred. Here we are today, discussing Teddy's journey, how he became friends with Fred, and how the Rancho was founded. The story is beautiful, at times sad, but it is an important story that must be told. With this 20 year-old album, we can see how Fred Drake touched so many lives and continues to impact the high desert even today. Proceeds from "I give you life" will go to LULAC - the nation's oldest Latino civil rights group - which has created a special fund for the victims' families and survivors. What's in there... Pothole season and the billions spend by taxpayers to mitigate the billions spent by big-city leadership... Avocados are next to godliness (tell us why)... Tomcats don't take no shed but apparently German Shepherds do... ..And let's not beat around the bush: robot dogs are creepy and inhuman, but Big Gov't would love to use them to treat illegals even worse. Yes, there's more: everything from crackin' rock on the Bizarro #1 Mix, to natural remedies to the damage being caused by the nasty ingredients in certain made-in-China viruses and made-in-secret vaccines.

Polly Jean Harvey (born 9 October 1969) is an English singer, songwriter and musician. Primarily known as a vocalist and guitarist, she is also proficient with a wide range of instruments. Over the course of her career, Harvey established herself as one of the most individual and influential songwriters of her era, exploring themes of sex, religion, and political issues with unnerving honesty, dark humor, and a twisted theatricality. This episode is a compilation of the four playlists published by Harvey between August 2019 and August 2021. Jeez - this episode is all over the place. From Led Zeppelin VS Southern Culture on the Skids to Ray's blimp-bomb over Akron, you're not going to be able to find your seat. We couldn't even find the door. Fortunately, there's lots of goodies: a review of pegboard (poseur alert?), the new Garden of the Gods Beer Train, some overenthusiastic geeking around on rollaways and cowboy movies, and some crazy crap about magazine drills. There's also a crapton of good music - QOTSA, Anthrax, Helmet, Rammstein, Corrosion, Slot and the Desert Sessions. Now go organize your toolbox.

What can I say? Drummer Awareness Month is kicking ass even if it isn't a real thing. On this episode we have yet another amazing drummer in Barrett Martin of Screaming Trees, Mad Season, Barrett Martin Group, Tuatara, Walking Papers, Desert Sessions, and tons more. Barrett is a studied musician and educated in orchestral/classical, jazz, and ethnomusicology and is also well known for producing and performing on many albums as a drummer or percussionist. Don't let the fanciness fool you, though. He's a vicious rock drummer! He's published two books in the last handful of years, 2017's The Singing Earth and 2019's The Way of the Zen Cowboy. Going into this episode, we thought desert rock and stoner rock were the same thing. We were wrong. We thought the "desert rock sound" started with the Sabbath influence lowend fuzzed riffs of Kyuss. We were wrong on that as well. There is an important lesson here - makes sure you are open to preconceived notions being challenged because the truth maybe more interesting than the vision in your head. That wasn't only the case for us. We invited on Jason Georgiades, director of Desert Age, a film about the 80s and 90s desert rock scene, who also had to shift his thinking once he started digging into history, talking to the people, and hearing the music of the California desert around Palm Springs. You've heard of Queens of the Stone Age and Kyuss, but what about Across the River and Yawning Man? Or Unsound or Target 13? We talk the bands, the landscape, the (lack of) places to play and the illegal substances that made the desert rock scene of the truly most original in punk, alternative and hard rock. We also get a behind the scenes look at the making of a rock documentary in the twenty first century. Use the promo code "Green Machine" to get 15% off anything in the Desert Age store. Check out our guest playlist by OKRP's director of Groupon spots, Luis Peña, who curated hard-rocking and introspective tracks for adventure and the open road. Black Grease — The Black Angels Oh how I love The Black Angels. I almost made the whole mix with just their songs. This is what west Texas sounds like to me. Hustle And Cuss — Dead Weather The sexy duo of Jack White and Alison Mosshart going at it with tension brimming at the seams. We’re starting to break the speed limit. When The Levee Breaks — Led Zeppelin I love air drumming to this masterpiece. Can’t help myself. Full-on smashing the steering wheel to Bonham’s thunder. T.I.B.W.F.— Budos Band I get lost in this song. It’s like a soundtrack to a 60’s horror film about gogo dancers. I love it. Wish You Were Here — Lee Fields & The Expressions My first car was a Chevy Malibu and it only had an AM radio station. And the only station I listened to was KYOK — Soul. Driving and soul go hand and hand to me. You Don’t Love Me-No No No — Dawn Penn I went through a big reggae phase. Actually, I reckon I’m still in it. Dawn Perry’s vocals and the rhythmic bass line gets my head moving every time. Optimistic — Radiohead Ah, Radiohead. You could save the world with your music. I backpacked all throughout Central America in my mid-twenties listening to OK Computer. This is off Kid A. I love how this song builds and builds tension and then releases. Ball of Confusion — Leon Bridges I heard this song the other day and was struck on how current it is today. Leon Bridges does a masterful cover of it. And that bass line is ridiculous. Commit A Crime — Mr. Airplane Man Mr. Airplane Man is the duo of Margaret Garrett and Tara McManus — drums and guitar. Simple and stripped-down grungy blues. That guitar riff makes me want to do terrible things to a Challenger Hellcat. Miss Ohio — Craig Cardiff Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings are on my desert island record list. But this cover of their song by Craig Cardiff is amazing. Gorgeous jazz piano ramblings. “I wanna do right, but not right now.”

We talk writing, recording, mixing and touring the new album, plus learn more interesting anecdotes from Kellii, like auditioning for Queens of the Stone Age and why he'll never be on a Desert Sessions recording (hint: it's too hot), how the democratic process influences his preferred number of band members, what's the best tank-driving song on THIAM, what a Pledge campaign is really like for bands, how softer is sometimes better when recording drums, why it's good to have an app on your phone to order food in the studio, and much, much more. Grab a beverage and a snack, and plant yourself in a comfortable chair for this two-plus hour in-depth discussion. Songs in this episode: Intro - The Focus19:42 - Hot Traveler36:33 - A.M. In this episode of Dread Media, Desmond Reddick spends the last episode in double digits interviewing JF Gonzalez, author of the post-apocalyptic thriller Primitive before reviewing the book. Then Darryll and Desmond sit down to review a film that angered one and put the other to sleep: Believers. Post-apocalyptic tunes aplenty: "Among his Tribe" by Ween, "Apocalypse Please" by Muse, "Punk Rock Caveman Living in a Prehistoric Age" by Desert Sessions, "True Believers" by Bouncing Souls, and "Endless Apocalypse" by Gwar.
