Hello, music lovers!  Welcome to Why Music Matters, a podcast where we examine the power and influence that music can wield in our lives.  I'm your host, Jeff Miers. Today, I'm beyond thrilled to welcome a longtime musical hero of mine, the guitarist, bandleader and songwriter Dweezil Zappa. Growing up with the late composer and guitarist supreme Frank Zappa as a father meant that Dweezil was exposed to some of the bravest and most adventurous music of the 20th century on a daily basis, from a very young age.  At 12, a random phone call to the Zappa home led to Dweezil meeting his hero, Edward Van Halen, and to the formation of a friendship that would last until the effortlessly brilliant guitarist, keyboardist and composer passed away, in October of 2020. During that time, Edward produced Dweezil's earliest forays into the professional music world, and remained a friend and mentor.  Dweezil is currently in the midst of his RoxPostrophy tour, which finds him celebrating a seminal era in his late father's canon of work - the early 1970s, when Frank Zappa release both the Apostrophe and Roxy & Elsewhere albums. The tour arrives in Buffalo for a performance at Kleinhans Music Hall, on Thursday, April 29. (Tickets and VIP packages are available now, through DweezilZappa.com.)  During our conversation, I asked Dweezil about this particularly rich period in his father's life and work; about just why Van Halen continues to matter to him and so many of us; about his brilliant, authoritative Van Halen podcast, Runnin' With the Dweezil; and about the difficulties of releasing and touring  behind ambitious, complex music in the streaming-centric world of the early 21st century.  Welcome to Why Music Matters, Dweezil Zappa…

His dad, Frank Zappa, is celebrated as one of the most talented and creative guitarists in history, and by age 12, Dweezil was recording music produced by Eddie Van Halen. (Little surprise that he's covering Van Halen's 1981 stunner “Push Comes to Shove” lately.) He's been a bona fide guitar star ever since, releasing seven original solo records, six tribute records, two LPs with his brother Ahmet Zappa, and guesting on recordings across the music universe.Ahead of his gig at Memphis' Minglewood Hall on his 2024 Rox(postroph)y tour, which celebrated the 50th anniversary of Frank Zappa's Apostrophe (') and Roxy & Elsewhere records, Dweezil gave PG's John Bohlinger a boot-to-bonnet look at his current road setup. There's a lot of ground to cover between his and his father's catalogues, and Dweezil loves the challenge, which he meets with a mix of his own gear and some special vintage assists courtesy of his dad. This week, we head back to '82 (when we could throw a pigskin a quarter mile) with special guest Jackson Reed. With his band Jackson Reed and the Silverbirds, the 26-year old Calgary rocker is mixing an irresistible blend of earnest '80s classic rock with modern pop smarts. Following the success of tracks like 2021's "Dangerous Lover" (featuring legendary drummer Kenny Aronoff) and 2023's "In My Head," their latest single is a cover of Prince's iconic 1982 hit "Little Red Corvette", offering up a take on the classic that's both faithful and fresh. It's garnered radio airplay coast-to-coast in both the USA and Canada. Reed also hosts the wonderful podcast Guess That Record, where he has interviewed luminaries such as The Police's Andy Summers, Dweezil Zappa, and Billy Joel drummer Chuck Burgi. And, in tribute to Jackson's pod, we play a brand new O3L game called "Back in 82, I Could Guess That Song!" Like good honorary Canadians, we partake in conversations about hockey, Rush, the Tragically Hip, Degrassi, Corner Gas...plus little red corvettes, Brett's drag club appearance, and Uncle Gregg's oddly specific sensual fantasies. Hey, it was Saturday night, we guess that makes it alright... Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

HAHAHAHA OK, OK...we're just a bunch of professional musicians with pretty diverse backgrounds who decided to take on a pretty big challenge and have some fun in the process.  Now, you might ask, “Oh yeah? Professional musicians, eh? What makes you think you can play Frank's music as well as [insert Zappa family/band member here]?” Well, maybe you haven't heard of us individually, but  "we're pretty good musicians"  and you probably have heard of the folks on our resumes:  BB King, Mick Fleetwood, Vinnie Colaiuta, Googoosh, Dweezil Zappa, LA Philharmonic, Arthur Barrow, Munich Philharmonic, Bryan Beller, Popa Chubby, Yo Yo Ma, Limelight: A Tribute To Rush, Pinetop Perkins, Chicago Lyric Opera, Madison Opera, blah blah blah....you get the idea. As for Frank's music, he was constantly changing things, both for his own creative choices and to adapt to the different musicians he had over the years. He also understood that his live performances were entertainment: it's supposed to be a rock show, not a piano recital. With all that in mind, we don't think playing Song X from Album Y note-for-note while staring at our shoes is the proper way to go about this. The result of that approach (combined with a lot of homework) is a show that pays respect to Zappa's legacy, but is also new and different and dangerous and FUN, with lots of eyebrows. Kinda like Frank.  --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/somethingcame-from-baltim/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/somethingcame-from-baltim/support

Synopsis: Arnold Schwarzenegger is running for his life in the high-tech futuristic action-adventure The Running Man. Co-starring Maria Conchita Alonso, Yaphet Kotto, Dweezil Zappa, Mick Fleetwood, Jim Brown, Jesse “The Body” Ventura and, in a critically acclaimed performance, Family Feud host Richard Dawson. The year is 2019. Television is now ruling people's lives. In the 21st Century, the most popular “audience participation” game show is “The Running Man” - where convicts can win pardons instead of “parting gifts”, by defeating murderous henchmen known as “stalkers”. The stalkers haven't had much of a challenge lately... until Ben Richards came along. Wrongly convicted of slaughtering 1500 innocent people, Richards is the next contestant to fight for his life... and his freedom. When Running Man host Damon Killian says “Come on down!”, be prepared to pay with your life! But Ben Richards isn't going down without a fight. Off Schwarzenegger goes into the burned-out sections of Los Angeles to face four of Killian's ace stalkers: Subzero, wielding his razor-sharp hockey sticks; Buzzsaw, the maniacal motorcycle-riding slasher; Dynamo, practicing his deadly electric shock treatment; and Fireball with his mighty flame-throwing arsenal. Now, the entire country is glued to the tube in a heart-pounding “sudden death” battle! ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: If you'd like to support Chris' WELLSVILLE NIGHTS project (of course you do) click HERE! ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: LISTENER FEEDBACK: Leave us your voicemail feedback at (484) 577-3876. “Supergroup” is a tired, overused term in music. However, when musical aces like guitarist https://www.premierguitar.com/artists/guthrie-govan-the-linguist (Guthrie Govan), bassist Bryan Beller, and drummer Marco Minnemann jam… they are an unrivaled force of nature. Each player has a remarkable resume: Govan has worked with https://www.premierguitar.com/artists/guitarists/porcupine-tree (Steven Wilson), Hans Zimmer, and Asia; Beller with https://www.premierguitar.com/artists/guitarists/joe-satriani (Satriani), https://www.premierguitar.com/artists/guitarists/steve-vai (Vai), https://www.premierguitar.com/artists/brendon-small-sh-t-i-couldnt-do-a-year-ago (Dethklok), and https://www.premierguitar.com/gear/rig-rundown-dweezil-zappa (Dweezil Zappa); and Minnemann with the Mute Gods, Trey Gunn, H-Blockx, and Mike Keneally—among many others. What makes a supergroup novel is generally the collective's previous endeavors and collaborations. The magic with these three cats is that their superpowers combine to become a flashy and fluent highflying act. Formed unceremoniously for a performance at the 2011 Anaheim NAMM Show, this tremendously talented trio has released nine albums (five studio and four live) in 11 years. The attraction for both the audience and the band is the same: variety. In any given performance, you can hear them shift from Return to Forever to https://www.premierguitar.com/gear/rig-rundown-yes-steve-howe-and-chris-squire (Yes) to https://www.premierguitar.com/gear/rig-rundown-king-crimsons-robert-fripp (King Crimson) to https://www.premierguitar.com/videos/the-big-5/steve-vai (Vai) to https://www.premierguitar.com/videos/rig-rundowns/tom-morello (Rage) to Funkadelic to moments of deranged Zappa. “We've been a pretty strange, eclectic band to begin with, as the music we do tips our hats to a lot of different styles,” notes Govan. “All I've ever done over the years I've been playing guitar is to just listen to everything around me and absorb the aspects of it that I liked. I've never felt an urge to specialize. I'm happy to keep combining whatever flavorings I like and rolling them all together.” The result: These three executive chefs put on a spicy clinic that would even please Gordon Ramsay. The Aristocrats' headlining 2022 run landed at Nashville's City Winery on July 27. Before the musical throwdown commenced, PG's Chris Kies hosted conversations that covered Beller's booming setup, including some old favorites and recovered friends (via social-media sleuthing), while Govan focused on detailing the slight-but-crucial changes to his signature Charvel and explaining his live tonal evolution—modernized with an all-encompassing Fractal Audio unit.
