Ozzy Osbourne, the self-proclaimed "Prince of Darkness"—a title he certainly lived up to—co-founded Black Sabbath in 1968, a band whose groundbreaking sound shattered expectations entirely. As their frontman, Ozzy's distinctive vocals and mesmerizing stage antics propelled them to superstardom throughout the 1970s. Imagine the landscape of music without anthems like "Paranoid" or "Iron Man"; their creation rests squarely on the shoulders of these sonic pioneers!Ozzy's contributions to Black Sabbath are the stuff of legend. He became the iconic face and unmistakable voice behind their initial eight albums, a discography that defined an entire genre. Beginning with their eponymous debut in 1970 and culminating in "Never Say Die!" in 1978, each record unleashed the band's brooding, monumental sound and Ozzy's, shall we say, characteristically eccentric vocal delivery. "Paranoid" and "Master of Reality" stand as undisputed masterpieces, essential listening for any self-respecting metal aficionado.Regrettably, the perils of the rock 'n' roll lifestyle exacted their price. In 1979, Ozzy's struggles with substance use culminated in his departure from Black Sabbath. However, this setback proved a launchpad, catapulting him toward an immensely successful solo career and reaffirming that the "Prince of Darkness" was far from dethroned!Ozzy Osbourne's 1980s solo endeavor proved extraordinary. With the collaborative genius of Randy Rhoads and Bob Daisley, he unleashed Blizzard of Ozz (1980) and Diary of a Madman (1981) upon the masses. These albums did not simply resonate; they instigated a seismic shift within the hard rock sphere, plotting a trajectory for a decade brimming with unparalleled musical audacity.Naturally, the Ozzy experience was never without its share of uproar. His on and off-stage actions fueled constant public conversation, even sparking disapproval from the Christian right, who claimed promotion of Satanic ideals. Yet, every bit of attention helped, it seemed. Amidst the controversy, Ozzy released thirteen solo studio albums, with the initial seven reaching multi-platinum certification in the United States; an achievement that reflects remarkable sales. The "Back to the Beginning" farewell concert in Birmingham on July 5, 2025, was an emotional tidal wave for Ozzy Osbourne and his fans. He announced his retirement, citing health concerns, and the performance felt like a joyous celebration of his legendary career, rather than a somber farewell. That "Back to the Beginning" aptly encapsulated his swan song resonated deeply, echoing his formative years in Birmingham. The news of his death a mere 17 days later, on July 22, reverberated like a thunderclap. While plans for future recordings existed, fate intervened. It's devastating that such a prodigious talent was cut short so abruptly, yet what a legacy he forged!Ozzy's seismic impact on music is undeniable, and his innovative spirit will perpetually galvanize future musicians. Though his earthly performance has concluded, his music endures. I'm just so grateful I got to witness such genius.Flamekeeper Podcast Network: http://www.youtube.com@flamekeeperpnAll Rights Reserved. We're kicking things off with a brand-new TEASE guitar reveal — and trust us, this one's got everyone talking. Then, big news from the world of effects pedals: Kathy Rhoads, sister of the legendary Randy Rhoads, just dropped a major update via Instagram — the long-awaited Concorde Edition of the MXR Randy Rhoads Distortion+ is dropping September 2nd! “The first version went fast, and so many of you were asking for more,” Kathy shared. “This version has all the same circuitry, but the finish is inspired by Randy's first Concorde Jackson Guitar, which he designed after flying on the actual Concorde Jet during his Ozzy tour. This is NOT a limited-edition – so everyone who wants one should be able to get their hands on it!” We are beyond ready to plug in and crank one of these up!

This week's quiz: On 5 July, I asked you a question about an article written by RFI English journalist Amanda Morrow: “Ocean campaigners hail French move to snuff out cigarette butt pollution”. In her article, we learned that cigarette ends, or butts, are filled with microplastics and that when they break apart, they leach chemicals into soil and water. France has banned smoking on beaches, in public parks, and at bus stops, as well as near schools, libraries, swimming pools, and sports grounds. You were to re-read Amanda's article and send in the answer to this question: How many liters of water can a single cigarette butt contaminate? The answer is, to quote Amanda's article: “According to the French Ministry of Ecological Transition, a single cigarette butt can contaminate up to 500 liters of water.” In addition to the quiz question, there was the bonus question, suggested by long-time RFI Listeners Club member Nasyr Muhammad from Katsina State, Nigeria: “What is your favorite prize you've received from RFI, and why?” Do you have a bonus question idea? Send it to thesoundkitchen@rfi.fr The winners are: RFI Listeners Club member Kanwar Sandhu from British Columbia in Canada, who is also this week's bonus question winner. Send us a textOzzy Osbourne's life was a thunderous symphony of chaos, triumph, and resilience. From co-founding Black Sabbath in 1968 and birthing heavy metal with groundbreaking albums like Paranoid and Master of Reality, to launching a wildly successful solo career marked by anthems like “Crazy Train,” Ozzy constantly redefined rock rebellion. His career was equally infamous—biting off a bat's head on stage, snorting ants, and surviving near-death experiences, including the tragic loss of guitarist Randy Rhoads. With Sharon Osbourne by his side, he reinvented himself again in the '90s through Ozzfest, which ran over two decades, and MTV's The Osbournes, which humanized the “Prince of Darkness” for a new generation. In later years, Ozzy battled Parkinson's disease and multiple health setbacks but still returned for a historic final Black Sabbath reunion show on July 5, 2025, performing seated on a bat-themed throne in Birmingham. Just 17 days later, he passed away at 76, leaving behind a legacy that merged mayhem, genius, and unexpected vulnerability. This episode dives deep into the unforgettable highs and crushing lows—from his wildest interviews and family drama to his cultural legacy and final farewell. On July 22, 2025, we lost Birmingham-born rock vocalist and cultural icon Ozzy Osbourne, rock's "prince of darkness," at the age of 76. His death, from complications due to Parkinson's Disease, ends a career spanning five decades, in which he pioneered an entire subgenre of heavy metal music, as frontman for Black Sabbath, before going on to an even bigger career as a solo artist, where he is credited for introducing the guitarist Randy Rhoads to the wider rock world, and for creating the wildly popular Ozzfest tours. Then, when he'd done it all, he and members of his family, Jack, Kelly, and his manager-wife Sharon, became pioneers of "reality TV" with the hit series, The Osbournes. On this very special episode, we hear two personal stories of how Ozzy's music and persona touched the lives of music industry professionals who were also, first and foremost, fans. Returning to our program, Jenn D'Eugenio (Women In Vinyl), made the journey to Birmingham for Ozzy's bittersweet Back To The Beginning farewell show, . She shares her first-hand descriptions of the event, plus two other fascinating Black Sabbath stories. Also returning is acclaimed music journalist Sylvie Simmons (Sounds, Kerrang!, and more), who took some time away from writing an Ozzy piece for Mojo magazine to share some personal anecdotes with Ozzy dating all the way back to his last days in Sabbath and how Sharon navigated his career back to the top. Ozzy Osbourne, along with his bandmates in Black Sabbath, invented heavy metal, and throughout Ozzy's post-Sabbath solo career he would invent new, self-destructive forms of sabotage. Arrested at an early age for breaking and entering, Ozzy Osbourne refused to conform to societal norms and common decency. He would go on to be arrested numerous times and escape too many near-death experiences to recount, including a plane crashing into his tour bus that would ultimately kill a dear friend and bandmate. The haunting final notes of "Diary of a Madman" still echo through metal history four decades after its release. Ozzy Osbourne's second solo album wasn't just eight tracks of heavy metal – it was a musical testament that would forever be shadowed by tragedy. We dive deep into this 1981 masterpiece that captured lightning in a bottle: the supernatural collaboration between Ozzy and guitar prodigy Randy Rhoads. The album stands as both triumphant achievement and poignant farewell, with Rhoads' death in a plane crash just months after its release leaving fans forever wondering what might have been. His classical-influenced solos on tracks like "Flying High Again" and "Over the Mountain" revolutionized metal guitar playing, setting standards guitarists still aspire to today.Beyond the radio hits lies a treasure trove of overlooked gems. The orchestral complexity of the title track reveals Ozzy's artistic ambitions extending far beyond his shock-rock persona. "Little Dolls" transforms from gritty rocker to something more melodically complex. "Tonight" showcases Randy's versatility with one of his most expansive solos – a bittersweet reminder of a talent taken too soon. The album's creation wasn't without drama – bassist Bob Daisley and drummer Lee Kerslake's contributions were later erased from reissues amid royalty disputes. Meanwhile, Sharon Osbourne was beginning to take control of Ozzy's career, a partnership that would reshape metal's commercial landscape for decades.Whether you're a lifelong metalhead or discovering Ozzy beyond "Crazy Train," join us for an album that balances technical brilliance with raw emotion, inspired by horror films and exploring the nature of madness itself. Share your favorite overlooked track from this classic album in the comments below – we might feature your pick in an upcoming episode!Send us a textSupport the show
Bob Daisley: The Unsung Hero of Rock and Roll For over five decades, bassist and songwriter Bob Daisley has been the powerhouse behind some of rock's most iconic recordings. From thunderous metal anthems to soulful blues and progressive ballads, Daisley's versatility and talent have made him a cornerstone in music history—working alongside legendary artists across the globe. Early Years: From Australia to the World Stage Born in Australia, Daisley moved to London at 21, chasing a future in music. On his 22nd birthday in 1972, he joined Stan Webb's band Chicken Shack. Just a year later, he signed on with Mungo Jerry, recording the hit single “Alright, Alright, Alright” and embarking on extensive international tours. Breaking Through: Widowmaker and Rainbow In 1974, Daisley rejoined Chicken Shack, but his creative ambitions led to co-founding Widowmaker in 1975. The band released two albums: Widowmaker (1976) and Too Late to Cry (1977), earning acclaim in the UK rock scene. Later that year, Daisley was tapped by guitar virtuoso Ritchie Blackmore to join Rainbow, alongside vocalist Ronnie James Dio and drummer Cozy Powell—forming what many consider the band's definitive lineup. Their explosive live shows and the album Long Live Rock ‘n' Roll solidified Rainbow's place in rock history. Blizzard of Ozz: Defining a Genre In 1979, Daisley partnered with Ozzy Osbourne and guitarist Randy Rhoads to form the Blizzard of Ozz. Their self-titled debut soared to #7 on the UK charts and went platinum in the U.S. They followed with Diary of a Madman (1981), which also achieved platinum status and further cemented the band's influence on heavy metal. Beyond the Blizzard: A Storied Career After a brief departure, Daisley returned to work with Osbourne on his third solo album. Tragedy struck in 1982 with Rhoads' untimely death, but the band pressed on, recording Bark at the Moon (1983) with new guitarist Jake E. Lee, earning international success. Daisley also joined Uriah Heep during this period and launched a prolific collaboration with guitar legend Gary Moore. He contributed to Victims of the Future and toured globally, later reuniting with Moore for Wild Frontier (1987) and Still Got the Blues (1990)—Moore's most successful album to date. 1990s & Beyond: Writing Hits, Shaping Legends Daisley returned once again to the Osbourne fold, co-writing and performing on No Rest for the Wicked (1988) and the chart-topping No More Tears (1991). That same decade, he formed Mother's Army with Jeff Watson of Night Ranger, releasing several albums showcasing his songwriting depth. Throughout the 2000s, he remained an in-demand collaborator, contributing to projects with Yngwie Malmsteen, Living Loud—a supergroup with Jimmy Barnes, Steve Morse, Don Airey, and Lee Kerslake—and revisiting classic Blizzard of Ozz material. Author and Legacy Builder In 2013, Daisley released his autobiography For Facts Sake, offering fans a behind-the-scenes look at his life in rock. Though he has stepped back from touring, he remains a respected figure in the music industry, continuing to inspire through studio work and guest appearances. A Legacy Etched in Rock History Bob Daisley's basslines have underscored some of the most memorable moments in rock and metal. Whether writing, performing, or mentoring, his passion for music endures. With a legacy spanning continents and genres, Daisley remains a foundational figure in the world of rock and roll. #BobDaisley #RandyRhoads #OzzyOsbourne #JohnnyBeaneTV #RockLegends #BassGuitarIcon Want to create live streams like this? Sammy Hagar is up first this week. His new song "Encore, Thank You, Goodnight" is out now. Sammy talks about the song, how it came to him in a dream, and why Wolfgang Van Halen didn't play on it. Sammy is really upfront and candid when he talks, which is appreciated. He also shared his thoughts on playing the last Ozzy/Black Sabbath show and the songs he'll be singing. Doug Aldrich from The Dead Daisies is next. Doug fought a cancer battle last year and talked about that. I'm very happy that he's come out of it, and he says he gets stronger every day. The band dropped a new album called Looking For Trouble, where they cover classic blues songs. He told me how the idea came about and spoke about the recording process and location. He also shared stories of rockers, including David Coverdale of Whitesnake, Ronnie James Dio, Reb Beach, and the first time he met Randy Rhoads. I could talk to Doug all day! Finally, singer Nate Peck joins me. This is the first time I've ever had the chance to speak with Nate. The Michigan-born singer talks about being on American Idol, through getting the job with Firehouse. The first gig they played, he didn't even get to rehearse! Nate speaks of his influences, singing these classic songs, and lots more. It was great to connect with Nate!

Tonight's episode of Talking Guitars was all about inspiration—how gear fuels creativity! Every time I get a new piece of gear, it sparks something. A riff, a melody, a full-on song. That's the magic. I shared how, when I first started playing guitar, I was nervous—where would the ideas come from? But as it turns out, the gear brings the music. Every single time. We also dove into some killer news: Billie Joe Armstrong recently played Randy Rhoads' “Crazy Train” solo with one of his side projects—and absolutely crushed it! We had to talk about that legendary crossover moment. Then I plugged in the Fender Acoustasonic through the Joyo Acoustic Amp, cranked it up, and played some of my newest riffs for you all—fresh, raw, and straight from the soul. Oh, and we wished YouTube a big Happy 20th Birthday! If you dig gear talk, guitar riffs, and epic moments like these—smash that subscribe button and join us on the journey. More music, more stories, more YOU.

In which The Curmudgeons travel back to sleazy, sweaty streets of Los Angeles to celebrate the music emanating from the City of Angeles. On one end, you had the burgeoning glam metal scene, a parade of excess and depravity in leather, chains and spandex--and some glorious, decadent riffage. On the other end, you had the DIY punk underground, led by hardcore punk stalwarts Black Flag and their SST label. You also had quirkier bands like The Minutemen and X lurking beneath the surface. John 5’s KISS collection is next level—so much so that he’s opening it up to the public in May for a special museum-style walkthrough in Los Angeles. But don’t expect a little shrine in a basement somewhere. We’re talking full-blown KISS history from 1973 to 1983 when the band was under Bill Aucoin’s management and before they ditched the makeup for Creatures of the Night. “It’s priceless,” John 5 says. “There’s stuff in here that even Gene didn’t know existed because it was made in places like South America, Australia, and Japan.” Oh, and speaking of Gene Simmons—I had to ask: how much would he charge Gene to see his own memorabilia? John laughed. “Oh my God. Gene really enjoys this stuff. There’s so much he’s never seen before.” John 5’s first meeting with Gene Simmons? Not exactly what you’d expect from a die-hard fan. Picture this: a 14-year-old John 5, waiting outside the Pontchartrain Hotel in Detroit, hoping to meet his rock god before a KISS show at Joe Louis Arena. Gene walks past. No autograph. Nothing. “So I jump in the elevator with him,” John says. “I hold out my booklet and marker, hoping for a signature.” The elevator doors open to Gene’s floor. Gene finally looks at him. “You want me to sign that?” And what does young John 5 say? “No, it’s okay.” WHAT?! “I was just so mad that he walked past me,” John laughs. “But yeah, that really happened.” March 19 marks 43 years since we lost Randy Rhoads, and John 5 had nothing but praise for the legendary Ozzy Osbourne guitarist. “Randy was an anomaly. He changed the game. It was like seeing the invention of the microwave or an electric car—something totally different that blew people’s minds.” Randy didn’t just step into Ozzy’s band and carry on the Black Sabbath sound. He redefined it. “That riff in Crazy Train? It’s gonna live forever.” It's always great to get "5" on the show.

In 1982, Randy Rhoads – a founding member of Quiet Riot and guitarist with Ozzy Osbourne, died in a plane crash. While he was only 25 at the time of his death, Rhoads was considered to be one of metal's most innovative musicians, who popularized a variety of techniques, including two-handed tapping and dive bombs. 1962, Bob Dylan‘s self-titled debut album was released in the US by Columbia Records. Produced by the legendary John Hammond – who discovered Billie Holiday, Aretha Franklin, and Bruce Springsteen – it was largely ignored on its release.
