"House Of Steam" Putting it simply the L.A.-born Nels Cline's resume' is so deep, to quote Mark Eitzel, it "would make the ocean proud." The guitarist and composer is one of the most respected names in the business and though he's perhaps best known these days for being the guitarist of Wilco, let's not single story Mr. Cline, because his body of work is varied and extensive. Aside from his early jazz work with his twin brother Alex, he's played with everyone from the Geraldine Fibbers to Mike Watt to Thurston Moore. But that doesn't even scratch the surface. Cline has played on close to 200 albums in jazz, pop, rock, country, and experimental music. Let me give you a few of those 200 to play with: Yoko Ono, Henry Kaiser, Firehose, Wayne Kramer, Rickie Lee Jones, John Zorn, Ramblin' Jack Elliot, Neil Finn, Lee Ranaldo and Chris Stamey. And belive me when I tell you that's a heavily expurgated list. Over the years Cline has been in bands with his pal Mike Watt Floored By Four, band with his wife Yuka Honda of Cibo Matto and he's had the Nels Cline Singers, the Nels Cline Trio, and the Nels Cline 4. Now comes The Consentrik Quartet, which is Cline along with saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock, bassist Chirs Lightcap and drummer Tom Rainey. Improvisational, experimental and downright wonderful, the band's debut album is a profound blend of rich cycle grooves, unexpected rhythmic excursions, and subtle meter innovations. It's marvelous work. Filled with delicate percussive brushes, virtuoso sax fills, prowling bass lines idiosyncratic sax melodies and Cline's nimble guitar lines moving through each composition with dextrous finesse, it's hard to think of a richer listening experience in recent memory. It's hard to think of a nicer guy as well--Nels is a lovely fellow and now you get to meet him. www.nelscline.com (http://www.nelscline.com) www.bombshellradio.com (http://www.bombshellradio.com) www.stereoembersmagazine.com (http://www.stereoembersmagazine.com) www.alexgreenbooks.com (http://www.alexgreenbooks.com) Stereo Embers The Podcast IG & Bluesky: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com
Today we are joined by Californian composer, bass guitarist, and double bassist Trevor Dunn. He came to prominence in the 1990s with the experimental band Mr. Bungle and has more than likely appeared on 100+ recording since. I say more than likely because I personally own 13 albums he has played on and I have barely scratched the surface. Here to reveal a little more about the man's music and his love for Brian De Palmer's Carrie. Please welcome the dude himself to A Year In Horror.Trevor Dunn / Mr Bungle / Melvins / John Zorn / Tomahawk / King Buzzo

On today's episode, I talk to musician Nels Cline. Nels is best known these days as the lead guitarist in the band Wilco, but his recording and performing career — spanning jazz, rock, punk and experimental — is well into its fourth decade, with over 200 recordings, including at least 30 for which he is leader. Nels has received many accolades including Rolling Stone anointing him as both one of 20 "new guitar gods" and one of the top 100 guitarists of all time. Beyond Wilco, Nels performs in a duo project with guitarist Julian Lage in addition to a quartet, The Nels Cline 4, collaborates with his partner Yuka Honda as the duo CUP, leads The Nels Cline Singers and that is just a brief survey of his many projects. His most recent albums are Wilco's 2019 record Ode to Joy and The Nels Cline Singers' 2020 album Share the Wealth. When your resume includes Mr. Bungle, Electric Masada, Fantômas, Secret Chiefs 3, Melvins, Tomahawk, MadLove, The Nels Cline Singers, Trio-Convulsant, (and more) it's safe to be considered prolific. What a treat it was to get to know legendary bassist Trevor Dunn! This was a dream guest for us and Trevor definitely didn't disappoint! Lots of great stories and fascinating perspectives in this one. Join us as we discuss Trevor's latest project Sperm Church, his new label, growing up in Eureka CA, Teletubbies, religion/philosophy….we promise it's worth your time! It’s 2021 and Aquarium Drunkard’s Transmissions podcast is back. Every Wednesday, your host Jason P. Woodbury sits down with a fascinating guest for a rolling conversation about art, process, and inspiration. To kick off our new season, we’re joined by Nels Cline. Known for his many varied solo projects, work in Wilco, and a long history of collaboration with artists like Yoko Ono, John Zorn, Wadada Leo Smith, Medeski, Martin, and Wood, and many more. His latest work, out now via the legendary Blue Note label, is called Share the Wealth. Backed up by the Nels Cline Singers—punk jazz saxophonist Skerik, keyboardist Brian Marsell, bassist Trevor Dunn, drummer Scott Amendola and Brazilian percussionist Cyro Baptista—it features the heavier side of Cline’s playing, but also his signature fluidity and extended jams. Cline joined us to explore the new record, discuss what being off the road has been like, and talk about his early days: falling in love with collaboration alongside his twin brother Alex, working in record stores, and how his life changed when he joined Wilco.

Our guest on this episode is the incredible Nels Cline. As a longtime fan of Nels, he was listed among the first names on the wishlist I created when this podcast began. Our good friends at Fretboard Journal introduced us and this episode was happening! Over the years I was too intimidated to speak with Nels when I was within arm's length, even. It turns out he's one of the easiest folks you could ever hope to speak with. The Nels Cline Singers have a new album coming out (PREORDER HERE) which I have ordered and highly recommend you do, too. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did. Thank you for listening and for your continued support! Products of the Mind: A Conversation About the Intersection of Business + Creativity
Products of the Mind Episode 15: Wilco Guitarist and Jazz Legend Nels Cline Welcome to Episode 15 of Products of the Mind. On this episode, I speak with Wilco guitarist and jazz legend Nels Cline. “We wanted to be hippies; we wanted to be Rock & Roll wizards.” Not everyone who goes to L.A. makes it big, but some people who are from there can go all the way. Today we speak with Nels Cline, guitarist for indie rock megastars Wilco and longtime solo artist (including with his band The Nels Cline Singers) and collaborator with countless other music legends. Nels talks about growing up in West L.A.; being “one half” of a set of twins; cultural music lessons in public school; and inspiration from Ravi Shankar. From sitar to guitar, Nels unravels his journey to finally making it big with Wilco. Hear what it’s like to survive as an artist: Volvo trips from L.A. to the bay; the struggle to make rent; regular life “getting in the way” of the dream; and opening for Primus. And of course we learn about Nels’ inspirations, including (but certainly not limited to): Humble Pie, Jimi Hendrix, and John Coltrane. You may know him as the shred-tastic lead guitar player for Wilco, but with his trio the Nels Cline Singers, and more recently an upcoming collaboration with jazz guitar virtuoso Julian Lage, Nels Cline has proven to be a major player in the jazz/avante garde world for over 30 years now. We sit down with the man who Rolling Stone listed as “the 82nd greatest guitarist of all time” to discuss his beginnings as a musician and music fan, his ability to effortlessly hop styles/genres, his work with the Nels Cline Singers and their latest record Macroscope, and much, much more. Versatile guitarist Nels Cline (Wilco, The Nels Cline Singers) talks about the influence of Miles on his artistry.
Guitarist Nels Cline may be best known these days for his work with Wilco, but he'd already established himself as an inventive guitarist and composer long before teaming up with the band. On his new CD, Initiate (Cryptogramophone, 2010), the Nels Cline Singers trio explores a variety of rhythmic and harmonic concepts from their very original viewpoint. In this interview, Cline talks about the all-inclusive concept behind his current trio; his concerns years ago about playing in the trio format; and the previous jazz masters whose styles of leadership in the studio and on the bandstand he most tries to emulate.
