The gang of three go on to consider how brilliant the cast are in their different-from-usual roles and go on to compete to determine who can cook the best winkles' feet on toast! In which Alex tells us why a Hungarian dancer was instrumental in fixing the distance for the marathon. It's a journey that takes us all the way from Pest to Chicago and from Hammersmith, through the Court of Honour, via some more dodgy colonial model villages and out to Windsor. Theatrical and event impresario Imre Kiralfy created the area we now know as White City*, to host events and exhibitions. Including the Franco-British Exhibition of 1908. What else happened in 1908? Well Rome was due to host the Olympics. Plus Fiona met a Zoomer, Indoor swimming, bad signposting and a family success. *What colour do you think the buildings were painted? Uachtarán na hÉireann, President Michael D. Higgins this presented this year's Presidential Distinguished Service Awards for the Irish Abroad at a ceremony at Áras an Uachtaráin. The MC for the event was Doireann Ní Bhriain. This year's ten recipients are: Séamus Coleman, Republic of Ireland international football captain Patrick Leahy, Former United States Senator Aduke Gomez, Irish-Nigerian scholar Rosalind Scanlon, Artistic Director of Irish Cultural Centre in Hammersmith, London Professor Enrico Terrinoni, translator of Irish literature into Italian Orla Kiely, fashion designer Sr Teresa McKeon, missionary and educator in Sierra Leone (in absentia) Mary O'Neill, legal advocate in Los Angeles Pam O'Mahony, Irish community supporter in Australia Stella O'Leary, Observer to the International Fund for Ireland The Presidential Distinguished Service Awards for the Irish Abroad recognise the service given to this country or to Irish communities abroad by those who live outside Ireland. The Awards were established by the Government following the 2011 Global Irish Economic Forum as a means to recognise the contribution of members of the Irish diaspora and were first awarded in 2012. To date, 120 people have been conferred with the award. Speaking at the ceremony, President Higgins said: “The Presidential Distinguished Service Awards enable us, as a nation, to recognise those members of our global family who have contributed, in their different ways, so significantly to Ireland's reputation on the international stage as a country that understands the migratory experience, its challenges, responsibilities and the part that transience plays in all of our shared lives. This evening's awardees follow in the footsteps of all those others, heralded or unheralded, feted or forgotten, whose quiet determination to make a contribution beyond the self makes us all proud of them and whom we also remember here today. That spirit of generosity, and those qualities of an inward being and an inclusive outward gaze which so exemplify the best of our Irishness, have been practically and magnificently demonstrated by our honoured guests through their lives, their work, and their contribution of distinguished service to Ireland and to Irish communities abroad. Mar Uachtarán na hÉireann, may I thank you deeply for representing Ireland so well, and for your personal efforts, service, sacrifices, and contribution to the achievement of excellence in your various fields. Mo bhuíochas libh uilig.”

Today's True Weird Stuff - Hammersmith Ghost (Airdate 11/15/2024) In 1803, residents of the Hammersmith district of London reported being terrorized by a ghost. The hysteria was so intense that a man named Francis Smith did the unthinkable: he shot and killed a man wearing white clothing, having mistaken the man for the Hammersmith Ghost. Can a man be found guilty of trying to kill a ghost? It's a decision that would take English courts 180 years to figure out.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode — recorded on the somewhat sombre Wednesday after the U.S. elections — we welcome the wonderful Beverley Glick to our Hammersmith lair and ask her about her New Romantic nom de plume Betty Page. Beverley tells us about her early days on Sounds, where she started out as editor Alan Lewis' secretary, and talks us through her seminal 1980 encounters with Spandau Ballet and Steve Strange. Her subsequent early interview with Duran Duran leads us to clips from David Keeps' 1993 audio interview with the Brummie band's frontman Simon Le Bon. After touching briefly on Depeche Mode, whom Beverley also interviewed very early on, our guest revisits the short-lived Noise! — Sounds' very own attempt at "doing" a Smash Hits — and recounts her subsequent path to the editorship of the rather longer-standing Record Mirror. Memories of mad moments with Happy Mondays (for Vox), and Beverley's eventual graduation to national newspapers, take us to her decision to forsake journalism for a career as a life coach specialising in "leadership communication" — and as the author of this year's In Your Own Words. A few glum thoughts on the political distortion of words such as "freedom" segue into our homage to the brilliant and outrageous Quincy Jones. Mark then quotes from newly-added library pieces about the Who (1965) and Ronnie Scott (1979)... and Jasper wraps up the episode with his thoughts on articles about "Brazilian Prince" Ed Motta (2006) and Tricky's magnificent Maxinquaye (2023). Many thanks to special guest Beverley Glick. For more Beverley, including info on her books and coaching, visit beverleyglick.com. Pieces discussed: Spandau Ballet: The New Romantics — a Manifesto for the Eighties, Visage: Stranger In Town, How I Discovered Duran Duran. Or Did They Discover Me?, Duran Duran's Simon Le Bon audio, Quincy Jones Has a Story About That, The Who, Ronnie Scott: King Of Clubs, The World of Ed Motta and Tricky: Maxinquaye (Reincarnated) (UMR/Island)

In this episode, Tim, James, Jon and Martin celebrate the 70th anniversary of Hancock's Half Hour with a look at the first series episode The New Car. The team consider how lucky we are that many of the first series survive because they were made available to overseas radio stations and how good a foil for Hancock Moira Lister was. Lashana Lynch has had a pretty incredible few years: she was the first ever Black female agent with a licence to kill in the James Bond franchise, played a ferocious warrior (and performed her own stunts) in The Woman King, became part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and portrayed Mrs Honey in the movie adaptation of Matilda. Now she's back in a Sky adaptation of The Day of the Jackal, co-starring Eddie Redmayne. It's a long way from her working-class upbringing in Hammersmith, West London - a childhood she credits with teaching her resilience and grit…as well as the importance of dressing well. I loved chatting to Lashana - she's so smart and strong and interesting. We discuss grief, racism, people-pleasing and her failure to stop procrastinating about procrastination. The Day of the Jackal premieres on Sky and NOW on Thursday 7th November 2024. Have something to share of your own? I'd love to hear from you! And, IKEA opens its first stand-alone restaurant in London.Show Notes with links:Former President Donald Trump has won the 2024 election, and his return could lead to major shifts for the auto industry, especially around electric vehicle (EV) policies, trade, and incentives. Here's what might be in limbo for automakers:EV Regulations: Trump may roll back aggressive EV mandates set under Biden, reducing pressure on automakers to hit strict electrification targets.Tax Credits: Biden-era EV tax credits could be at risk, impacting demand and profitability for manufacturers deeply invested in electric tech.California's Emission Standards: Trump might revoke California's right to set its own emissions standards, affecting states that follow its lead.Trade Policies: Trump may tighten restrictions on Chinese vehicle parts, intending to boost domestic production but likely increasing vehicle costs. The Elon factor: Here's how Musk's involvement could shape auto policies and beyond:Trump has proposed forming a government efficiency committee led by Musk, aiming to cut $2 trillion from the federal budget. Musk has already expressed his interest in reducing government spending by 30%.Musk advocates for a unified federal approval process for autonomous vehicles, reducing state-by-state regulatory inconsistencies. He commented, “If there is a department of government efficiency, I'll try to make that happen.”While Trump is generally less favorable toward EV mandates, analysts speculate that Musk's influence may push for selective pro-EV policies that align with Tesla's interests.Musk, a long-time proponent of U.S.-based manufacturing, may support Trump's trade stance on limiting Chinese parts imports, which could impact supply chains and costs for EV makers.Tesla stocks spiked 15% following the election, underscoring investor optimism over Musk's potential influence in the new administration.General Motors has claimed the number two spot in EV sales in the U.S. for Q3 2024, with 32,000 EVs sold across multiple brands. Ford, however, disputes GM's approach to these numbers.GM's EV lineup includes the Chevy Silverado, Blazer, Equinox EVs, GMC Hummer EV, and Cadillac Lyriq, all on the Ultium platform.GM has sold 370,000 EVs in North America since 2016, with 300,000 of those in the U.S. Tesla remains far ahead, with over 5 million units sold globally since 2008.Ford argues it's still the “No. 2 best-selling EV brand,” claiming GM's figures count all brands together, altering the comparison. From Reddit polls to repeat diners, IKEA's food offerings are beloved, with many customers visiting the store just for the food which is why IKEA's first stand-alone restaurant next to its Hammersmith store in London marks a fresh chapter for the brand, leveraging its famous Swedish Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email

This week we hear from the British seascape artist Victoria Obolensky whose work has been sold worldwide to high profile collectors, including Prince Albert II of Monaco, Ralph Lauren and Joely Richardson. Victoria was born in 1972 in Hammersmith, London, the only child of Linda White, an artist and journalist. Her father Gavin Cowper left the family when Victoria was just six months old and she was raised by her mother and stepfather Alex White who owned Gresham Publishing. The family moved to Malta in the Mediterranean when Victoria was two years old returning to London when she was seven. She attended the Sacred Heart School in Malta followed by the Glendower Girls Primary School in South Kensington. When the family moved to Hampshire, Victoria attended the Rookwood School in Andover. An interest in photography attracted her to the Chelsea School of Art and later the Camberwell School of Art in London and she soon made her mark as a talented photographer exhibiting in the Andipa Gallery in London. Her first career was in journalism following in her mother's footsteps by working for glossy magazines such as Homes & Gardens, Elle, Vanity Fair and Tatler. In 2019, her focus moved to painting and during the Covid lockdown period she established herself as an artist. In the past two years Victoria has sold 480 paintings through her website, social media and galleries. Victoria lives in Dartmouth, Devon with her son Max and Persian cat Toby. https://victoriaobolensky.com/Instagram: @victoriaobolensky.art https://www.instagram.com/victoriaobolensky.art Victoria's favorite female artists:Katherine BurnsJudy ChicagoIrina Cumberland Host: Chris StaffordProduced by Hollowell StudiosFollow @theaartpodcast on InstagramAART on FacebookEmail: hollowellstudios@gmail.comBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/wisp--4769409/support.

U&UKTVPlayG2U&Dave&Knuckles Righty dokey matey bloke flap old salty seadog amigo skip-jack jockstrap piano tuners, we're back with another in our occasional series of Dwarf-adjacent commentaries, this time covering Bottom Series 2, Episode 4, Parade. Not only is the series produced and directed by Ed Bye, this particular episode guest stars both Robert Llewellyn and Lee Cornes, which is as good an excuse as any to rabbit on over this episode and tackle your Bottom-shaped waffles. We cover pretty much all the affiliated spin-offs - the live shows, the Fluff video, Guest House Paradiso - as well as discussing what happens when TV schedules are affected by real life events, how Rik and Ade could have fitted in to Red Dwarf and trying to figure out if there's any modern equivalents to this madness.Show notes Our recent Hammersmith bench-based pilgrimage. The opening theme is a cover of BB's Blues (as opposed to BB's Theme) Here's a full rip of Bottom Fluff, just because.
In this episode we strap on the mutton chops like biker Jesus pumped full of amphetamines and look straight up to the heavens with the voice of a demon for a warts ‘n all take on one of the most influential bands of the last fifty years. If you're not familiar with Motörhead, they are best known for the song, Ace of Spades and I have described them in the past as what it would sound like if Chuck Berry was hit by an out of control freight train driven by drunken pirates. While there have been many members over the years, and some were more important than others, there's only really one bloke who matters in the Motörhead story, Lemmy Kilmister.Lemmy wasn't a satanic metal head. But he was certainly anti-religion with songs like, [Don't Need] Religion, Bad Religion and God Was Never on Your Side. This episode also features cameo guest star appearances from Joseph of Nazareth, Ian Kilmister, Santa Claus, Wales, The Beatles, The Cavern Club, Liverpool, Europe, The Kinks, The Rockin Vicars, Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, Sam Gopal, Escalator, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Pink Floyd, The Birds, Hawkwind, Silver Machine, Canada, Bastard, Top of the Pops, BBC, United Artists, On Parole, Phil ‘Philthy Animal' Taylor, ‘Fast' Eddie Clarke, NME, Ted Carroll, Chiswick Records, Mike Tyson, Snaggletooth, the War-Pig, Joe Petagno, Napoleon, Bronze Records, Austin Healy, No Sleep ‘till Hammersmith, Stand By Your Man, Plasmatics, Wendy O. This week's guest is the stand-up comedian, actor, marathon-runner and political activist Suzy Eddie Izzard. Suzy tells Gyles about her new name, and why she's relaxed about what people to choose to call her. She then takes Gyles back into her childhood, spent in Aden, Northern Ireland and South Wales, until the sudden death of her mother changed everything and Suzy and her brother were sent to boarding school. Suzy talks about what made her want to perform, what gives her drive to take on new and greater challenges all the time; she and Gyles talk about street performing, and about Suzy's current, ground-breaking solo production of Hamlet (on at London's Riverside Studios in Hammersmith). In the last twenty-five years, ghost hunting has entered something of a golden age, with all sorts of technology playing its part and filling up an investigators kit bag. Cameras, EMF metres, InfraRed thermometers and spirit boxes all help to carve a science out of a difficult premise, with differing levels of credibility. In the early 1800s, things were a little bit different. It was a simpler time. All you needed back then was a stiff drink, or maybe two, and a loaded revolver, because as we all know, if you want to catch a ghost, you need to shoot it first. All well and good, provided the ghost you shoot isn't just a man in his work overalls. SOURCES Old Bailey Proceedings Online (1804) Trial of FRANCIS SMITH (t18040111-79).
