This summer marks a year since Labour's landslide victory at the 2024 general election. The party's manifesto contained a number of pledges for reforming the UK's constitution and political institutions. So how have those pledges fared since Labour took office? Which promises have been delivered? What unexpected changes have been introduced? And what further reforms will – or should – be on the government's agenda? The rule of law The Lord Chancellor and the Attorney General have both placed great emphasis on this new government upholding the rule of law. What does this mean in practice? Has the government delivered on this aspiration, and what more is needed to do so? What challenges has it faced? Fulham Reach Boat Club, a fairly new rowing club on the River Thames in London, very close to Hammersmith Bridge have been running the ‘Row the Rhythm' sessions for blind and partially sighted people to give them an introduction to the sport of rowing and the opportunity to get out rowing on the Thames too. RNIB Connect Radio's Toby Davey made his way down to the banks of the River Thames to find out more about the ‘Row the Rhythm' sessions at Fulham Reach Boat Club firstly chatting with Julia Philipson, Chief of Community Development at Fulham Reach for a bit of background to the Club and why they wanted to put on the ‘Row the Rhythm' sessions for blind and partially sighted people. After chatting with Julia Toby caught up with Ollie one of the Coaches at Fulham Reach Boat Club to find out how he found it coaching someone who is visually impaired in rowing for the first time and how his coaching techniques had developed over the sessions with feedback from the visually impaired people taking part in the ‘Row the Rhythm' sessions. Charlotte another of the Coaches at Fulham Reach Boat Club who is also visually impaired explained to Toby about how she got in to rowing, coaching at the club, coping with her own sight loss and how she can still carry on coaching but in a slightly different way. Finally Toby caught up with Ashley and Angel, two of the visually impaired people who have been taking part in the Row the Rhythm sessions, to find out why they decided to come down to Fulham Reach Boat Club and give rowing a go. Ashley and Angel explained to Toby what it is like rowing on the Thames as a visually impaired person, the freedom rowing gives them and what they would say to encourage other blind and partially sighted people to take up the sport of rowing. To find out more about Fulham Reach Boat Club do visit their website - https://www.fulhamreachboatclub.co.uk There is much more about the sport of rowing along with details of where to find a rowing club near you on the British Rowing website - https://www.britishrowing.org (Image shows Toby with mic, headphones and life jacket in the sunshine on the bank of the river Thames with the pontoon, Hammersmith bridge and some of the boats and rowers in the background)

In this episode we welcome the great soul scribe Tony Cummings to Hammersmith to discuss the subject of his classic 1975 book The Sound of Philadelphia. Tony travelled all the way down from his adopted Stoke-on-Trent to answer our questions about his earliest musical passions in his native Plymouth and the launch of his pioneering '60s fanzines Soul, Soul Music and Shout. He goes on to talk about his contributions to (and editorship of) Black Music magazine – and his deep immersion in the "Philly Soul" sound patented by Kenny Gamble, Leon Huff and Thom Bell. We hear about the extraordinary stable of musicians who performed on timeless hits by acts such as the O'Jays, the Three Degrees and Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes. Clips from audio interviews with Kenny Gamble and – from 1976 – the Stylistics' Herb Murrell prompt reflections on the lavish sound and sophistication of R&B classics by everyone from the Delfonics and Jerry Butler to Teddy Pendergrass and McFadden & Whitehead. Many thanks to special guest Tony Cummings. Pieces discussed: Inside the Philly Sound, MFSB, TCB, The Stylistics, Gamble-Huff, Thom Bell and the Philly Groove, Hit Producer Thom Bell: Philly Soul & the R&B Flugelhorn, "Philadelphia was the party with a tormented soul", Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff audio, The Stylistics' Herb Murrell audio, Why are we so hard on our music press? and Linkin Park.
Many tales from different types of touring this week as Eddie takes us through his return to competitive golf, Iain explains why he won't be returning to Frisco and Andrew bemoans crime levels in Hammersmith. In more obviously golf-related matters, the three discuss another near miss for Tommy Fleetwood and wonder how he can start to close out tournaments. They also chat about a third major for Minjee Lee and Iain comes up with possible solutions to a couple of potential problems with the womens' game.Visit: www.petermillar.co.ukEmail: tcf@thechippingforecast.co.ukInstagram: @chippingforecast Hosted on Acast. To kick off the new series of 5 O' Clock Apron Podcast with Good Food Claire cooks with the giant of the airwaves, Amol Rajan. Amol is one of Radio 4's Today program presenters, he also hosts BBC2's legendary TV quiz show University Challenge. Amol Rajan Interviews on BBC iPlayer and BBC Sounds platform Amol interviewing momentous public figures from Bill Gates to Greta Thunberg to Sir Ian McKellen amongst others. Amol is a busy man with x4 children under 9 years of age, he's up early to host the Today program and home late recording University Challenge, to make things easier, Claire and Amol meet at Good Food HQ in Hammersmith to record the episode. Amol arrives on his bike (of course he does!) and apologises to Claire for not arriving as is more customary, suited and booted. If you follow Amol on his social media and on TV, you'll know this man is a snappy dresser! Claire brings along some of her spice collection from home and Amol sets about teaching Claire his recipe for Paneer Curry and, apart from the stove top tripping a couple of times during the recording, the pair chop and chat like no tomorrow. Cricket, Cooking for Kids, Amol's upbringing in south London, previous careers, hereditary diabetes and how to chop onions, speedily! Can Amol cook? Of course he can, he's Amol Rajan! Amol Rajan's Paneer Curry 2 blocks of paneer, approximately 400g total, diced 2cm 4 tbsp ghee 2 onions, peeled and finely diced 3cm piece of ginger, peeled and finely grated 3 garlic cloves, peeled and finely chopped 300g cherry tomatoes, cut in half, or use diced tomatoes 200g frozen peas, defrosted 1 tbsp cumin seeds, toasted and ground, or use ground 1 tbsp coriander seeds, toasted and ground, or use ground ½ tsp ground turmeric ½ - 1tsp chilli powder, to taste Large bunch of coriander, finely chopped ½ lemon Cooked rice, to serve Indian pickles, to serve 1. In a non-stick pan over a moderate – high heat, add ½ the ghee and fry the paneer with a pinch of salt, in batches if needed, until nicely bronzed on all sides, around 3 – 5 minutes. 2. Remove from the pan and put the paneer on a plate and keep to one side. 3. Return the pan to the heat and add the remaining ghee, add the onion and cook over a moderate for around 10 minutes to soften. Add a big pinch of salt, garlic and ginger and cook for 2 minutes more. Add the ground spices and cook for 30 seconds more. 4. Add the tomatoes and a splash of water, around 2 - 3 tbsp should do, you want the contents of the pan juicy, but not soupy! Put a lid on the pan and cook for 10 minutes over a moderate heat for the tomatoes to soften and the flavours to meld. 5. Add the peas, check the seasoning, add more salt if needed and plenty of black pepper. Cook for a couple more minutes to heat the peas through. 6. Add the cooked paneer to the pan and stir to warm through in the pan. Check the seasoning, adding more salt and pepper, as needed. 7. Remove the pan from the heat and stir through with the chopped coriander and the lemon juice. 8. Serve the paneer curry with some steamed rice and Indian pickles to accompany. How young Ned Seagoon journeys by steam packet to the Americas to find the Lost Gold Mine and how, after being foully tricked by several desperadoes, he eventually triumphs. The action takes place aboard the S.S. Filthmuck, in a New Orleans dustbin, near the desert town of San Fairee Ann, and in a dried-up gulch near Hammersmith.Sandwiched between The Whistling Spy Enigma and The Dreaded Batter Pudding Hurler of Bexhill-On-Sea, this episode of The Goon Show is an often overlooked gem from early on in Series 5. It's a cracking yarn, invoking Treasure of the Sierra Madre-type themes as Neddie tries to retrieve the map of a gold mine he lost to Grytpype-Thynne and Moriarty. Much double-crossing and map-tearing abounds, and we even get the opportunity to discuss 1830s pornography!Returning guest Paul Abbott is co-host of The Big Beatles & Sixties Sort Out and the podcast can be found HERE: https://linktr.ee/bigsort
For this episode we're joined in our Hammersmith lair by the highly respected Chris Bohn, known better these days by his alias Biba Kopf (cue a nod to Berlin Alexanderplatz author Alfred Döblin...) The veteran NME contributor and sometime editor-in-chief of The Wire talks about his long career as a Europhile connoisseur of extreme and out-there music. We start by asking our guest about his mother's experience as a teenage refugee fleeing her native Silesia after the advance of the Red Army in 1945 – and her subsequent settling in the English Midlands. We learn about Chris' journalistic training on the Sutton Coldfield News and his subsequent travels around Europe, where he reconnected with relatives in West (and East) Germany. Chris reminisces about his first London job as a press officer for Polydor Records, for whom he chaperoned Siouxsie & the Banshees to tapings of Top of the Pops. He then talks us through his writing career from Melody Maker and NME to decades-long association with The Wire. Among the articles mentioned are his 1979 live review of Joy Division, his groundbreaking 1981 on-the-road piece "Trans-Europe Express", and his interviews with Nina Hagen (1979) and Einstürzende Neubauten (1983). Discussion of The Wire leads us into clips from an audio interview with Wire icon Ornette Coleman … by Wire mainstay David Toop. We conclude the episode by paying heartfelt tribute to two Californian geniuses who left us this week: Family Stone funk pioneer Sly Stone and the Beach Boys' "pocket symphonist" Brian Wilson. We shall not see – or hear – their like again. Many thanks to special guest Chris Bohn a.k.a. Biba Kopf. Visit the Wire's website at thewire.co.uk to subscribe digitally and in print. Pieces discussed: Nina Hagen: West Is Best, Einstürzende Neubauten: Let's Hear It For The Untergang Show, Ornette Coleman (1995), Sly & The Family Stone: Sly Buries Underground And Has Fun!, Not Only Sly, But Sometimes Just Plain Damn Evasive, Sly Stone's Higher Power, Some Producers' Hints From Beach Boy Brian, Brian Wilson, Brian Wilson: Beach Boy, Pop Visionary, Wounded Soul, The Devil and Jerry Lee Lewis and Group Home: Supa Group.

Uachtarán na hÉireann, President Michael D. Higgins this presented this year's Presidential Distinguished Service Awards for the Irish Abroad at a ceremony at Áras an Uachtaráin. The MC for the event was Doireann Ní Bhriain. This year's ten recipients are: Séamus Coleman, Republic of Ireland international football captain Patrick Leahy, Former United States Senator Aduke Gomez, Irish-Nigerian scholar Rosalind Scanlon, Artistic Director of Irish Cultural Centre in Hammersmith, London Professor Enrico Terrinoni, translator of Irish literature into Italian Orla Kiely, fashion designer Sr Teresa McKeon, missionary and educator in Sierra Leone (in absentia) Mary O'Neill, legal advocate in Los Angeles Pam O'Mahony, Irish community supporter in Australia Stella O'Leary, Observer to the International Fund for Ireland The Presidential Distinguished Service Awards for the Irish Abroad recognise the service given to this country or to Irish communities abroad by those who live outside Ireland. The Awards were established by the Government following the 2011 Global Irish Economic Forum as a means to recognise the contribution of members of the Irish diaspora and were first awarded in 2012. To date, 120 people have been conferred with the award. Speaking at the ceremony, President Higgins said: “The Presidential Distinguished Service Awards enable us, as a nation, to recognise those members of our global family who have contributed, in their different ways, so significantly to Ireland's reputation on the international stage as a country that understands the migratory experience, its challenges, responsibilities and the part that transience plays in all of our shared lives. This evening's awardees follow in the footsteps of all those others, heralded or unheralded, feted or forgotten, whose quiet determination to make a contribution beyond the self makes us all proud of them and whom we also remember here today. That spirit of generosity, and those qualities of an inward being and an inclusive outward gaze which so exemplify the best of our Irishness, have been practically and magnificently demonstrated by our honoured guests through their lives, their work, and their contribution of distinguished service to Ireland and to Irish communities abroad. Mar Uachtarán na hÉireann, may I thank you deeply for representing Ireland so well, and for your personal efforts, service, sacrifices, and contribution to the achievement of excellence in your various fields. Mo bhuíochas libh uilig.”

Today's True Weird Stuff - Hammersmith Ghost (Airdate 11/15/2024) In 1803, residents of the Hammersmith district of London reported being terrorized by a ghost. The hysteria was so intense that a man named Francis Smith did the unthinkable: he shot and killed a man wearing white clothing, having mistaken the man for the Hammersmith Ghost. Can a man be found guilty of trying to kill a ghost? It's a decision that would take English courts 180 years to figure out.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode — recorded on the somewhat sombre Wednesday after the U.S. elections — we welcome the wonderful Beverley Glick to our Hammersmith lair and ask her about her New Romantic nom de plume Betty Page. Beverley tells us about her early days on Sounds, where she started out as editor Alan Lewis' secretary, and talks us through her seminal 1980 encounters with Spandau Ballet and Steve Strange. Her subsequent early interview with Duran Duran leads us to clips from David Keeps' 1993 audio interview with the Brummie band's frontman Simon Le Bon. After touching briefly on Depeche Mode, whom Beverley also interviewed very early on, our guest revisits the short-lived Noise! — Sounds' very own attempt at "doing" a Smash Hits — and recounts her subsequent path to the editorship of the rather longer-standing Record Mirror. Memories of mad moments with Happy Mondays (for Vox), and Beverley's eventual graduation to national newspapers, take us to her decision to forsake journalism for a career as a life coach specialising in "leadership communication" — and as the author of this year's In Your Own Words. A few glum thoughts on the political distortion of words such as "freedom" segue into our homage to the brilliant and outrageous Quincy Jones. Mark then quotes from newly-added library pieces about the Who (1965) and Ronnie Scott (1979)... and Jasper wraps up the episode with his thoughts on articles about "Brazilian Prince" Ed Motta (2006) and Tricky's magnificent Maxinquaye (2023). Many thanks to special guest Beverley Glick. For more Beverley, including info on her books and coaching, visit beverleyglick.com. Pieces discussed: Spandau Ballet: The New Romantics — a Manifesto for the Eighties, Visage: Stranger In Town, How I Discovered Duran Duran. Or Did They Discover Me?, Duran Duran's Simon Le Bon audio, Quincy Jones Has a Story About That, The Who, Ronnie Scott: King Of Clubs, The World of Ed Motta and Tricky: Maxinquaye (Reincarnated) (UMR/Island)
Lashana Lynch has had a pretty incredible few years: she was the first ever Black female agent with a licence to kill in the James Bond franchise, played a ferocious warrior (and performed her own stunts) in The Woman King, became part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and portrayed Mrs Honey in the movie adaptation of Matilda. Now she's back in a Sky adaptation of The Day of the Jackal, co-starring Eddie Redmayne. It's a long way from her working-class upbringing in Hammersmith, West London - a childhood she credits with teaching her resilience and grit…as well as the importance of dressing well. I loved chatting to Lashana - she's so smart and strong and interesting. We discuss grief, racism, people-pleasing and her failure to stop procrastinating about procrastination. The Day of the Jackal premieres on Sky and NOW on Thursday 7th November 2024. Have something to share of your own? I'd love to hear from you! Shoot us a Text.Donald Trump's return to the White House could disrupt the auto industry's EV ambitions. Plus, Elon Musk's advisory role with the new administration and his plans for autonomous tech. And, IKEA opens its first stand-alone restaurant in London.Show Notes with links:Former President Donald Trump has won the 2024 election, and his return could lead to major shifts for the auto industry, especially around electric vehicle (EV) policies, trade, and incentives. Here's what might be in limbo for automakers:EV Regulations: Trump may roll back aggressive EV mandates set under Biden, reducing pressure on automakers to hit strict electrification targets.Tax Credits: Biden-era EV tax credits could be at risk, impacting demand and profitability for manufacturers deeply invested in electric tech.California's Emission Standards: Trump might revoke California's right to set its own emissions standards, affecting states that follow its lead.Trade Policies: Trump may tighten restrictions on Chinese vehicle parts, intending to boost domestic production but likely increasing vehicle costs. The Elon factor: Here's how Musk's involvement could shape auto policies and beyond:Trump has proposed forming a government efficiency committee led by Musk, aiming to cut $2 trillion from the federal budget. Musk has already expressed his interest in reducing government spending by 30%.Musk advocates for a unified federal approval process for autonomous vehicles, reducing state-by-state regulatory inconsistencies. He commented, “If there is a department of government efficiency, I'll try to make that happen.”While Trump is generally less favorable toward EV mandates, analysts speculate that Musk's influence may push for selective pro-EV policies that align with Tesla's interests.Musk, a long-time proponent of U.S.-based manufacturing, may support Trump's trade stance on limiting Chinese parts imports, which could impact supply chains and costs for EV makers.Tesla stocks spiked 15% following the election, underscoring investor optimism over Musk's potential influence in the new administration.General Motors has claimed the number two spot in EV sales in the U.S. for Q3 2024, with 32,000 EVs sold across multiple brands. Ford, however, disputes GM's approach to these numbers.GM's EV lineup includes the Chevy Silverado, Blazer, Equinox EVs, GMC Hummer EV, and Cadillac Lyriq, all on the Ultium platform.GM has sold 370,000 EVs in North America since 2016, with 300,000 of those in the U.S. Tesla remains far ahead, with over 5 million units sold globally since 2008.Ford argues it's still the “No. 2 best-selling EV brand,” claiming GM's figures count all brands together, altering the comparison. From Reddit polls to repeat diners, IKEA's food offerings are beloved, with many customers visiting the store just for the food which is why IKEA's first stand-alone restaurant next to its Hammersmith store in London marks a fresh chapter for the brand, leveraging its famous Swedish Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email

Born in Hammersmith, with Jamaican roots, Lashana Lynch showed promise from an early age, becoming the first girl to be cast as Pinocchio in West London. She began her working life as a singer but won a scholarship to drama school, which changed the course of her career. In 2019, she was cast as Maria Rambeau in Captain Marvel and, two years later, she received a much-anticipated call from Barbara Broccoli of James Bond fame. Lashana won a Bafta for Rising Star in 2022 for her role as Nomi in No Time to Die, and subsequently landed her dream role as Rita Marley in Bob Marley: One Love. Her new show, Day of the Jackal, is on Sky from 7 November. Nick mixes an alcohol-free Caleño for Lashana, while Angela prepares a delicious broccoli & anchovy pasta with crispy crumbs. The experts at Waitrose pair this with an Italian white wine, Tre Fiori Greco di Tufo. Lashana loves food and shares her favourite comfort dishes, along with the occasional challenges of being a pescatarian. She pulls back the curtain on the Hollywood production process - and reveals how it feels to audition to be the new OO7 in the presence of Daniel Craig. In the last twenty-five years, ghost hunting has entered something of a golden age, with all sorts of technology playing its part and filling up an investigators kit bag. Cameras, EMF metres, InfraRed thermometers and spirit boxes all help to carve a science out of a difficult premise, with differing levels of credibility. In the early 1800s, things were a little bit different. It was a simpler time. All you needed back then was a stiff drink, or maybe two, and a loaded revolver, because as we all know, if you want to catch a ghost, you need to shoot it first. All well and good, provided the ghost you shoot isn't just a man in his work overalls. SOURCES Old Bailey Proceedings Online (1804) Trial of FRANCIS SMITH (t18040111-79).
