The Catholic Herald Podcast: Merely Catholic with Gavin Ashenden
In the seventh podcast of the Merely Catholic series, Dr Gavin Ashenden talks to Ralph Martin about the ‘all-out civil war' that has broken out in the Catholic Church largely between those who wish to accommodate contemporary mores and those who believe the Church must hold fast to the teaching of two millennia. Dr Martin, an esteemed U.S. theologian and author of the 2020 book The Church in Crisis: Pathways Forward, predicts that the time is drawing near when bishops will increasingly conclude that they can no longer stay silent and will begin to take sides in a struggle which goes right to the heart of the Church's mission and purpose.
Recently a very prominent Cardinal, very close to Pope Francis, flat out said he didn't believe the Catholic teaching on homosexuality and that the Catechism should be revised. And at about the same time, the Synodal Assembly of the German Church voted overwhelmingly to advocate for blessing same sex unions. And then Pope Francis at his weekly General Audience seemed to imply that everyone is saved. What's going on? What should we do? Watch on YouTube: https://youtu.be/zkfJ-gSMdUg Today's Catholic culture is marked by a profound and settled religious indifferentism. Among many Catholics, to say what the Church has always taught—that Jesus Christ is the one way to salvation—is considered offensive, or at best, rash. In certain countries, the bishops' conferences have practically made a policy against seeking converts from other religions (or lack thereof). Catholics, ruled by fear of human respect and compromised by their own private sins, are finding more and more reasons not to proclaim Christ's moral teachings as well. Ralph Martin, whose new book A Church in Crisis: Pathways Forward is a comprehensive spiritual diagnosis of our present situation, joins the show to discuss the many factors contributing to religious indifferentism. These include theological doubts about whether anyone really goes to hell (thanks, Balthasar), the therapeutic culture which has lost any sense of sin and justice, the focus on legalistic analysis of culpability rather than the need to change, and fear of human respect. We've been taught by the world to think of religion as a personal choice. All religions are equal. They have no claim on our public life. In this episode, Scott Hahn and his co-author Brandon McGinley debunk this view to show that religion is much more than opinion. In fact, they argue that the very future of our Church and civilization depend on reclaiming the true meaning of religion. Learn More Want to learn more?
