This week we bring you an intimate talk with rising Cuban roots-pop singer-songwriter Daymé Arocena. Known for her honey-voiced records that honor Cuba's joyous folk and jazz traditions, her newest Alkemi' takes a sonic leap into the powerful pop and suave R&B music that she admired as a girl - Sade, Whitney Houston and even Beyoncé - while also paying homage to her grandmother's lifelong practice of Santeria.  Born to a musical family in Havana where she shared a two bedroom house with twenty-one extended family members (her mother and grandmother sang locally and dad owned a night club), she was accepted into a prestigious music conservatory at age ten and has been off to the races since, co-founding and the all-female Cuban-Canadian jazz collective Maqueque in 2014, which toured internationally and earned a GRAMMY nomination and releasing four solo albums. Cubaphonia from 2017 is a favorite of this listener.  Like many artists caught in Cuba's long history of repression and poverty - she was forced to leave the island to protect the safety of her husband, a photojournalist whose coworkers had been imprisoned. Canada was their only option at the time due to travel restrictions, but after three years living there, the pandemic pushed her to look for a new home again.  She was advised to contact Grammy-winning producer Eduardo Cabra, better known as Visitante Calle 13, he invited her to come to Puerto Rico to spend a few days in his house - and a new album and a new home base was found. Sometimes you just need that island energy to make you feel whole again. Listen to the deeply spiritual (yet still catchy as hell) “American Boy” - about her finding her happiness and power even without the love of her life being by her side. For someone who grew up as a dark-skinned girl feeling invisible, what's clear is Daymé wants to be seen and understood more than ever before.

Grammy-winning Cuban-Canadian singer-songwriter Alex Cuba didn't have the tradition of Christmas while growing up back home in Cuba, but it's nonetheless a holiday close to his heart since he and his wife decided to get married on the day back in 1995. 

Popular performer and activist Harry Belafonte died at the age of 96 on Tuesday. We hear about his impact from Yoruba Richen, director of a documentary about Belafonte hosting The Tonight Show for a week in 1968; and Cuban-Canadian musician Alex Cuba.

New music from Mali's Fatoumata Diawara and Oumou Sangare, plus a single from Terakaft to start the show. Featured the wonderful Cuban-Canadian duo Okan at both ends of today's show. They play a Rogue concert this coming Monday. Can hardly wait!! Interesting Nordic / Celtic crossover from Vilsevind, lots of Canadians excelling at story songs and fast fiddles, and a feature on Pharis & Jason Romero. Then a pro-choice section, some more delightful Latina music from Okan and Las Estrellas de Vancouver (all-female mariachi band who open for Okan on Monday), and a blast of Quebecois magic from Le Vent du Nord, before the recently-passed Bill Bourne sings of how circuses - and for me, the way folk festivals - brighten up our lives. We need cheering up!

Gabe is playing Resident Evil VII: Biohazard and has gotten some genuine scares out of it. We of course continue what seems to be a new segment, what games we are playing. This week on TransCanada Music West, we welcome the first two-time Grammy nominated artist to ever appear on the program; the immensely talented Smithers, BC-based artist Alex Cuba. Alex Cuba was born to the musical Puentes family in Artemisa, Cuba in 1974. His father, Valentin Puentes is a celebrated Cuban musician and music teacher. His twin brother Adonis is also a JUNO nominated Cuban-Canadian musician. In 1995, Alex fell in love with Canada while touring the country with his father and brother. Soon after, he met his bride-to-be in Vancouver before making his new home in Smithers, BC, where he’s lived for over a decade. Since becoming a Canadian, Alex has been embraced and celebrated in the Canuck music community. He’s collaborated with the likes of Nelly Furtado, Ron Sexsmith, and Alejandra Ribera, and David Myles, and scored 2 JUNO Awards. Alex will head to the Grammy Awards in LA next week, where his fifth record, Healer, is up for Best Latin Pop Album of the Year. This week on the program, you’ll hear Alex perform songs from that record live at the Arden Theatre in St. Albert, supported by Jake Jenne on drums and backing vocals, Ian Olmstead on Bass and backing vocals, and Jose Sanches on percussion and backing vocals.

This week, Mike has a pair of interviews with two of the country's most revered guitarists and songwriters with very unique styles. Matt Andersen's upcoming release, Honest Man, drops at the end of February. It's the follow-up to 2014's Weightless, which saw him sell out Toronto's iconic Massey Hall alongside many other new career highs. Then, recent Latin Grammy winner and Grammy nominee Alex Cuba joins Mike to talk about his latest, 2015's Healer. In addition to music and songwriting, the Cuban Canadian also speaks about what an improved relationship between the U.S. and his native land could mean for arts and culture.
