Been a busy one in the studio this past month, brewing up some new jams. Coming up, I’m kicking off a big summer stretch – starting with Jungle Experience in Koh Phangan at the end of June, then Baccarat in Bangkok, followed by shows in Yeosu and Seoul in July, and wrapping things up with my return to Red Ruby in Bali on August 1st. Today’s episode is a special one with some of my favorite tunes in the first hour, followed by an exclusive session with the Seoul-based selector, Ruta. For now, turn it up!
When certain songs play, you just have to sing along. And this 20 year old song is one of them! You feel your shoulders start to shimmy and your hips start to swivel, and you find yourself asking, " Am I a slut?" and then you answer, "Well, we're all a little slutty when we hear this song!" and then you grind your way to the dance floor, in a shirt that is now a crop top. You may not be respected, but you are at least having fun!Podcast Link: https://sho-dependent.captivate.fm/listenSocials!Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/shodependentpod/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@shodependentpod

Interview Date: March 22nd, 2026Episode Summary:In this episode, Menina Fortunato sits down with choreographer and movement director Mark Samuels for a conversation about persistence, timing, and carving out your own path in the dance industry. Mark shares how he started out as a self-taught dancer in Toronto, learning choreography by recording music videos on VHS tapes and studying them frame by frame long before YouTube or social media existed. He opens up about his early years dancing with Luther Brown's group Do Dat, how that experience launched his professional career, and the bold move that changed everything: cold-calling contacts connected to a music video he loved until one of those calls led him to New York for a Mariah Carey project. Mark also reflects on the importance of saying yes, staying versatile, building relationships, and continuing to train beyond your comfort zone. From assisting Paul Becker for years to choreographing recent major projects like the Juno Awards, Mark's story is a reminder that longevity in this industry comes from talent, initiative, and consistency.Show Notes0:01 — Mark's dance career and major credits intro2:45 — Learning dance from VHS and MuchMusic10:33 — Joining Luther Brown's Do Dat crew13:15 — Early paid gigs and touring Canada17:40 — Assisting Paul Becker for years in film21:05 — Mariah Carey story begins with cold-calling34:36 — “Say yes and figure it out”45:22 — Biggest mistake: not training in more styles57:56 — “Contacts equals contracts” career lesson1:33:31 — Slow growth, patience, and next goals matterIn the early days of his career, Mark danced for countless Canadian artists such as Shawn Desman, Jully Black, Maestro Fresh Wes and Nelly Furtado to name a few. He also danced in Canada's most notable shows such as The Juno Awards, MMVA's and So You Think You Can Dance Canada. After spending years as a dancer in Canada, Mark expanded to the US, wherehe was fortunate enough to work with some of the industry‘s biggest choreographers. His journey led him to dance for multi-platinum recording artists such as Mariah Carey, Mary J Blige, Missy Elliott, Kelis, Mario and many more. Today, Mark is a well-established figure in the dance industry. With over 30 years of experience, he has shifted his passion into choreography and movement direction. He‘s collaborated on a number of successful film and TV shows such as A Series Of Unfortunate Events, Disney's - The Descendants and The Magicians. “I was seriously considering taking a beta blocker before this interview,” Dan Levy told guest hosts Hannah Jackson and Margaux Anbouba on the Run-Through Podcast, “the first time I ever took a beta blocker was like an hour and a half before hosting the Emmys.” Luckily for this anxious trio, the stakes of this episode were much lower than on the stage of a prominent awards ceremony. Levy came onto the show a few weeks before the release of his latest show Big Mistakes, co-created by Rachel Sennott, which comes to Netflix April 9th and is about two siblings who accidentally find themselves entrenched in a world of organized crime. This show, like Schitt's Creek, is a family drama, but this time the stakes are a little higher. “Committing to an idea that you feel excited to tell in a long form format is an intense thing,” Levy told the hosts, “And I have a very irrational fear of being blackmailed into organized crime.” For his sake, one hopes he never ends up in that situation because as he confessed, “I would be instantly murdered.” Reflecting on who might also not do so well in such circumstances, he thought of Sennott, who he first met while working on The Idol. “That's a compliment,” he clarified. The pair went on to write the pilot together and “the rest is history!”His style was also a big topic of conversation. His earliest sartorial days involved shopping at Club Monaco, apparently a brand coveted by Toronto teens, and folding clothes in the Gap Kids to the songs of Nelly Furtado and New Radicals. It was a bit later on that he first discovered and made purchases at JW Anderson and Rick Owens. Now, around a decade later, he's good friends with the likes of Jonathan Anderson and Michael Rider. Also on the episode, Chioma Nnadi and Laura Ingham sat down in the British Vogue studios to discuss the latest goings on from across the pond. This past weekend, the pair attended London's Vogue co-hosted by Alexa Chung and Lila Moss which helped support the UK based charity Give Your Best. They gushed about the latest very beachy cover of Olivia Rodrigo, bare feet and all. The vintage pulls for that shoot complimented Rodrigo's personal style well and were an instant wish list for the rest of us. They closed out their chat with some big news: their dear friend Christopher Kane is stepping into the role of Creative Director at the House of Mulberry—bravo! The Run-Through with Vogue is your go-to podcast where fashion meets culture. Hosted by Chloe Malle, Head of Editorial Content, Vogue U.S.; Chioma Nnadi, Head of British Vogue; and Nicole Phelps, Director of Vogue Runway, each episode features the latest fashion news and exclusive designer and celebrity interviews. On National Guitar Day, Jeremy and Sean Kelly discussed the upcoming release of Sean's book, "Battleaxes: A Hard Rockin' History of Pointy Guitars," which is scheduled for August 26th, which explores the evolution and cultural impact of pointy guitars in rock music. Sean shared his personal guitar journey, inspired by Twisted Sister's "We're Not Gonna Take It," and discussed his experiences playing with various artists including Nelly Furtado and Lee Aaron. They explored the competitive landscape between guitar manufacturers during the 1980s, the influence of branding on guitar choice, and the technical innovations that shaped guitar design. The conversation also touched on the current state of guitar playing among younger musicians and the enduring appeal of 1980s rock recordings, particularly when experienced through vinyl and FM radio.
