I recently shared a new conversation with the band Regulator Watts, so it now seems fitting to share an older talk I had with their distant cousin, Reggie Watts, the gifted comedian, musician, and actor. Reggie and I first spoke on Wednesday May 9, 2012, at 3 PM ET, ostensibly about his then new special, A Live at Central Park, but we also covered his comedic and musical influences, his interest in Canadian television, opening for Conan O'Brien on his Legally Prohibited From Being Funny on Television Tour 2010, which I saw at Massey Hall, a question from Nick Flanagan, a forthcoming television adaptation of the Comedy Bang! Bang! podcast he was co-starring in, and other things too.To hear this entire conversation, subscribe to Kreative Kontrol on Patreon at the $6 tier or higher (a reminder that an annual subscription includes a discount compared to a monthly one).Related episodes/links:Ep. #966: Regulator WattsEp. #894: “Weird Al” YankovicEp. #818: Jon DoreEp. #498: Lauren Lapkus! One of the true pleasures of a lifetime in music and broadcasting is connecting with artists at the very beginning of their careers. If the connection is a strong friendship, emotionally you get to go along for the ride. On the downside,  you must be prepared to lose those friends along the way through attrition, lifestyle and medical issues. I'm pleased to say Colin James has given all of us a great ride. 8 Junos, 31 Maple Blues Awards, Induction into the Canadian Music Industry Hall of Fame, Order of BC and turning 60 years old with 21 studio albums under his belt. Colin has played his way through an amazing collection of audiences.  Starting with Stevie Ray style  Texas blues, then blues rock, big band swing, roots, Americana and all the way back to blues. What a Ride!! Following a stellar concert at Massey Hall, Colin is on a Canadian tour now and he's heading our way.  With the wonderful Terra Lightfoot! Feb 26 -Grey Eagle   Calgary Feb 27 – N Jubilee Edmonton March 1 – Orpheum Vancouver March 3 – Royal Theatre  Victoria March 4 & 5 – Port Theatre Nanaimo Colin is a master storyteller. This time he has tales of recovering from a road accident on his scooter in the USA. Damage to his foot and fret hand slowed him down considerably. "Run With Me" The Ontario-born Bry Webb formed the underground outfit The Constantines out of the ashes of the emo band Shoulder in 1999. With their jagged guitars, tribal drums, snarling bass lines and Webb's ferocious vocals along with his poetic lyrics, The Guelph-based Constantines were one of those rare bands that seemed to arrive fully formed. From 2004 to 2008, the Juno-award nominated Constantines put out four brilliant albums--their eponymous debut, Shine A Light, Tournament Of Hearts and Kensington Heights. And there's not a false note to be found anywhere--the syncopated rhythms, musical intensity and the sheer muscle and heart that powered every song brought to mind everyone from Fugazi to the Minutemen to The Replacements. This is a partial list of their highlights; they toured with The Tragically Hip and The Weakerthans, were signed to Sub Pop, played Lollapallooza, the Vancouver Olympics and a gig at the legendary Massey Hall. With the band on hiatus, Webb formed a band called The Harborcoats and put out three brilliant solo albums--Free Will, Provider and Run With Me. Redolent with raw intimacy, sensitivity, and poetic grace, Webb's solo work rings with as much conviction as his work with The Constantines. He's been nominated for a Genie Award, he contributed a track to This American Life and he sang back-up on Feist's album Metals. I can't say enough about this guy--he's a towering force and whether he's belting out anthems or staying low in the pocket to deliver some of the most stirring acoustic numbers you've ever heard, Bry Webb is a giant talent who is one of my all-time favorites. His body of work means everything to me and his presence on this show is nothing short of humbling. Hi everybody, Happy New Year! I'm stoked to post this chat with my first guest of 2025: Mediterranean artist extraordinaire PAVLO! Born in Toronto to Greek parents, Pavlo's amazing journey to touring concert halls around the globe is most impressive. Over his 20-year career, he's released 17 albums and 4 PBS TV specials, including his latest which was filmed in Santorini! Two of his albums went GOLD, and he had a Top 10 Billboard hit with “FANTASIA.” In 2002, Pavlo won a lawsuit against R&B mega stars R-Kelly and Jay-Z, who sampled his music for their hit song “Fiesta.” Pavlo has performed for King Charles and worked/toured with artists such as Jose Feliciano, Olivia Newton John and The Tenors. He also recorded/performed a trio album called “Trifecta” with legendary guitarist OSCAR LOPEZ and Hall of Famer RIK EMMETT (Triumph). Their subsequent national tour was sold out, and the album earned Pavlo a Juno nomination!Playing what he calls “Mediterranean music”- a blend of Greek, flamenco, Latin and Balkan flavours, Pavlo chats about his early childhood, how he went GOLD on his debut album and sold out Toronto's Massey Hall. We also talk about his continuous growth in popularity by orchestrating the release of 4 PBS specials, allowing him to tour constantly all over North America. Pavlo has headlined over 3000 concerts so far and, being a born entertainer, will keep performing and performing. This was a fun chat I enjoyed very much! Who else loves David Sedaris? I discovered him in 1997 when an old mentor/editor at Golden Words, my college humor papers, suggested I pick up his book 'Naked' to become a better writer myself. I found the essays sardonic, witty, uncannily observational, and laugh-out-loud funny. I couldn't believe how gently and elegantly he wrote about topics ranging from his obsessive compulsive tics to dropping out of school to (in the namesake essay) visiting a nudist colony. Like millions of people around the world I became obsessed with David Sedaris. I've read all of his books—'Me Talk Pretty One Day' (2000) being close to my heart and 'Calypso' (2018) being a recent fave. I even went to see him speak at Massey Hall in Toronto which is where I learned—first-hand!—that he waits hours and hours after every talk to happily chat and sign books from anybody willing to wait for him. (In my case my phone died about two hours before I had a chance to say hi. Years ago we had a sixty-second conversation about pie and he wrote 'Neil, I am so happy you are alive' in my book.) In this classic chapter of 3 Books—the all-time #1 most popular conversation ever on the podcast—I squeeze into the back of David's limo from the Four Seasons hotel in Toronto en route to the CBC building and then up to his bookstore event at the Indigo at Yorkdale. What was supposed to be a tight 20 minute chat evolved into a beautiful hour and a half conversation covering topics like the secret to getting old, artistic integrity after commercial success, why artists have a hole in their hearts, and, of course, the incredible David Sedaris's 3 most formative books. On this New Year's Eve let's flip the book back to Chapter 18...

Joel Plaskett's eleventh album—One Real Reveal is special for several reasons. Joel sat down with a small Telefunken KM56 microphone and a 4-track recorder and recorded the tracks for One Real Reveal ON CASSETTE TAPE starting with the brilliant High Summer. This album and its music is bare.  Because it is, you're forced to listen to the music and especially the lyrics.  These are words and melodies that will still be the air in a concert hall. IF you can get in. Joel's current tour out west is Sold Out. Fittingly, the tour ends at Massey Hall in Toronto. It too will be Sold Out. Discover the new sounds of Joel Plaskett, just like the old Joel Plaskett only quieter, more reflective. I've been waiting many years to have Joel to myself. Just to exchange ideas and passions. My timing couldn't have been better. One Real Reveal was well worth the wait.   The other welcome guest is our pal Leeroy Stagger.  Host of Dirty Windshields Radio Hour on CKUA Saturdays. But before Leeroy joined us, he was a highly respected singer/songwriter and he continues to write, record and perform his very personal songs. Leeroy has just released his latest album 3 am Revelations. In it, Leeroy reflects the life around him. The road, family, social issues and seeking the answers to all his inner questions. Just a heads up – 3 am Revelations rocks.  Bangers like Watermelon Pink, Count to 10, These Days.  Then finds balance with reflective gems like It's gonna be alright (someday), Alberta Stars, Life's a Drag, etc. It's good to have friends and partners like Leeroy Stagger.  Great album Leeroy!  You nailed it.

Ron Sexsmith says “I'm not really shy, I'm just Canadian”. He's a singer-songwriter who has never had a top 40 hit, is not rich, but is deeply admired by the people he admires most. Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney, Elvis Costello, and Gordon Lightfoot, are all, were all, huge fans. Sexmsith's songs, like “Secret Heart”, have been performed by everyone from Rod Stewart to Feist to Nick Lowe.We spoke to him as he was about to headline at Toronto's storybook Massey Hall. When Ron was a kid and couldn't afford a ticket, he'd hang outside to see his heroes, now he's on the same stage. There's no Taylor Swift action, but if you look carefully, he does move his hips! And Ron is happy. He left the bright lights of Toronto and moved to Stratford where he just recorded his 18th album, “The Vivian Line”. Ron's wife Colleen had to plug in his computer, but you should see him on Twitter/X. The puns are excruciatingly funny, or maybe just excruciating! You can listen to his new album HERE on any one of the many ways to get music these days. You can watch this episode on YouTube. A Transcription of this episode is located on our episode page. THE ARWEN LEWIS SHOW - Featuring Don Stevenson, Moby Grape After years of playing a circuit of R&B clubs and events and speakeasies in the Pacific Northwest, Don Stevenson trekked down to the Bay Area in the summer of '65. He'd recently joined The Frantics. The following summer he co-founded the iconic San Francisco band, Moby Grape. Playing ballrooms, like The Fillmore and Avalon, the Grape instantly became the darlings of the Bay Area, and the object of a massive bidding war. In the early weeks of '67, the fivesome shuffled between San Francisco and LA with record company executives from Columbia, Atlantic, and Elektra elbowing each other out of the way, with contracts and pens in hand. Signing with Columbia, Moby Grape recorded their debut in a handful of sessions in the spring of '67. The album came out a few days after Pepper and a couple of weeks later, the Grape played a killer set at the Monterey Pop Festival.   As a songwriting-singing drummer, Don Stevenson was a trailblazer, opening the door for the likes of Levon Helm and Don Henley. Moby Grape's self-titled LP isn't just one of the best debuts in history, it's one of the best albums ever cut. It's now over half a century after those heady days and today Stevenson is putting out his third solo album, Limited Engagement—Volume 1. Produced by Jamie Collins- SoundSuiteMusic, and featuring such talent as Tim Bovaconti (Burton Cummings Band), Dane Clark (John Mellencamp Band), and Dale Ockerman (Doobie Brothers), the album includes 11 stellar tracks tapping into all the genres Moby Grape explored so many years ago.   With another dozen tracks in the can, Stevenson's next album is right around the corner and he's looking into the past, present, and future all at once. At 82, Don Stevenson has every bit as much energy as those two generations younger and you'll witness this when his band hits the stage at Massey Hall. Having shared the bill with the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Steve Miller, The Byrds, BB King, Buddy Guy, Sly Stone, and a host of others, Don Stevenson is no stranger to event concerts, like Chest Fever. Prepare to be bowled over by a seasoned icon. Don Stevenson - https://mobygrape.us The Arwen Lewis Show Host | Arwen Lewis Executive Producer | Jeremiah D. In this unique episode, I intertwine history with engaging conversation. The Band made their inaugural appearance at Massey Hall in 1970, a highly anticipated hometown performance that critics hailed as nothing short of a "religious experience." Massey Hall holds a revered place in Toronto's cultural heritage, akin to the Ryman Auditorium, situated north of the border, and it has hosted some of the greatest performers in its hallowed halls. On November 18, 2023, Chest Fever, who received the official seal of approval from Robbie Robertson before his passing, will bring their outstanding celebration of The Last Waltz to Massey Hall. Joining them will be an illustrious lineup of guest artists. I sit down with Chest Fever to explore their journey from the intimate confines of Toronto's Horseshoe Tavern to the grandeur of Massey Hall. We delve into their meticulous preparation, the mounting anticipation, and much more!
