Scott Bailey - sports reporter for AAP in Australia - joins Martin Devlin on It's Only Sport following the West Indies' enthralling eight-run victory over the Aussies in their second cricket test at The Gabba, for their first win away to Australia since 1997. Back then, the Windies had the likes of Brian Lara, Curtly Ambrose and Courtney Walsh on their roster. Scott Bailey recaps what he describes as one of the best days ever of test cricket, and talks about how the red-ball format continues to prove its superiority over one-day and Twenty20.

Peter Hayter, Emma John and Rob Smyth join Gary Naylor to discuss how Mike Atherton’s inexperienced England tourists fared against Brian Lara and the West Indies in early 1994. There are tales of Miller’s bar, blotto copy and teenage trauma, along with colourful memories of Curtly Ambrose and 46 all out, an unlikely victory in Barbados and Lara’s world record test score. And will the panel reach any consensus over the enigma that is Graeme Hick? They attempt to weigh his extraordinary talent and considerable achievements against the times when his England performances didn’t meet people’s huge expectations. Story Time! We have a new chat with England opener Jason Roy about missing the IPL, which comes after the customary weekend wander through cricket history. In this episode, the link between ancient spinners Don Blackie and Bert Ironmonger, the record that Sachin couldn’t reach, Jenny Owens turning the ball both ways, Virat Kohli doubling up, the endless quest for 557, Curtly Ambrose cuts sick at the MCG, and one of our favourites in Bobby Peel is drunk in the shower again. How often do you have two people with the same name talking about something they love with their entire being? This is one of the rare occasions when Dean du Plessis and Dean Jones have a chat about current players, and of course Dean Jones’s playing career. Jones is a fabulous story teller, and and leads us into the famous sweat band incident with Curtly Ambrose. He also admits that he was part of one of Australia’s “most gutless, heartless” performances against the West Indies in 1988 which subsequently saw him score 216 against the same opposition in the following test match. Story telling at it’s best. He pulls no punches. Dean Jones at his best.
This week we have each decided to come up with three players we would like to isolate with and why. Some of the content includes:- Sourav Ganguly’s palace- Working on Hashim Amla’s arm- Sharing a coffee with Adam Zampa- Dinner with Dwayne Leverock- Lance Klusener and Curtly Ambrose share a bunkbed Stay safe!
In a golden era for Australian test cricket, Colin Miller was a standout in more ways than one. A stellar Shield career spanning more than a decade finally earned him an international breakthrough at the tender age of 34. But don’t worry, he more than made up for lost time, amassing 69 wickets in just 18 tests at a superb average of 26. Whether you’re a seamer or a spinner, that’s an impressive average right there. This guy was both - at test level no less. That’s quite an achievement in itself. We talk nicknames, blue hair, becoming test player of the year, smashing Curtly Ambrose all around the park and much more in this candid interview with Colin 'Funky' Miller.
Join Alison Mitchell, Jim Maxwell and Charu Sharma as they look back on a rollercoaster of a year of cricket in 2019. They will be with Curtly Ambrose on the dancefloor, who can forget Ben Stokes lighting up the World Cup and we hear how Jemma Barsby copes with playing elite cricket whilst dealing with multiple sclerosis. Suddenly everyone is hitting runs. Warner’s 335* — brilliant individual performance by misunderstood genius, or meaningless caveat-laden knock? More neatly compiled runs for Marnus as safety levels soar to new heights... are we “too” safe now? Meanwhile, Payne’s declaration is up for debate — should he have pulled Warner in on 334* as homage to the Don, or plundered 700 against a third grade Pakistan? Either way, like all things it’s dividing us as a nation. Anyway Yasir Shah hit a ton batting at 8 so clearly none of these runs mean anything and should thus be stricken from the record effective immediately. The pleasure is ours as we interview in-person one of the truly “great men” (earnest use of the term) of grade cricket: Richard Chee Quee. Cheeks takes us through 90s grade cricket and copping bumpers from Mike Whitney as a 14-year-old, to Mercantile Mutual Cup glory, to tonning up against Curtly Ambrose and Courtney Walsh, before performing a special unplugged version of his Aria chart-topping single, Can’t Bowl, Can’t Throw (featuring Dave on guitar). Then Cheeks sticks around to answer your questions on #AskTGC, which include indoor cricket glove etiquette, being alpha’d by glamorous European gentry, and the inevitable homogenisation of the “rare unit” within Australian cricket. As always, nothing possible without the legendary folks at BudgySmuggler. We’re performing live across Australia in 2019.
