rWotD Episode 3319: Charles Wright (cricketer) Welcome to random Wiki of the Day, your journey through Wikipedia's vast and varied content, one random article at a time. The random article for Friday, 5 June 2026, is Charles Wright (cricketer).Charles William Wright (27 May 1863 – 10 January 1936) was an English cricketer who played first-class cricket for Cambridge University between 1882 and 1885 and for Nottinghamshire between 1882 and 1899. Wright also played many first-class cricket games for the Marylebone Cricket Club. His Test match career was limited to three appearances for England against South Africa in 1895-96. Wright was an opening batsman and wicket-keeper.Wright was educated at Charterhouse and Trinity College, Cambridge. In total Wright went on four overseas tours, all of which were captained by Lord Hawke. These were to the United States and Canada in 1891 and 1894, to India in 1892-93, and then on the South African tour in which Wright played his Tests. He is also notable for two other occurrences:In 1890 he was the first captain to declare an innings closed. In a game against Kent at the Bat and Ball Ground in Gravesend, Wright declared Nottinghamshire's second innings closed on 157 for 5 to set Kent a target of 231 to win. However, the tactic did not come off as the game was drawn with Kent on 98 for 9 and Nottinghamshire requiring one more wicket to win.In 1893 Wright became the fourth[1] batsman to be given out handled the ball after he picked up a ball that had become lodged in his pads and returned it to a fielder.Wright retired from the game after losing his eye in a shooting accident and later became a long-standing member of the Nottinghamshire Cricket Club's committee. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:03 UTC on Friday, 5 June 2026.For the full current version of the article, see Charles Wright (cricketer) on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm generative Matthew.

Why is George so pessimistic about the future of red ball cricket? Is there anything the non-Hundred hosting counties can do to survive? How big a mess is the Blast schedule and what can be done about that? Is 7000 at Lord's for the derby a worrying sign of things to come? Why have England gone in with two openers who bat at three and a number three who hasn't played and who might be injured anyway? Who did Harmy's son face in the nets this week? After hearing Russell Crowe aggressively managing fans in Paris, Ricki and Tim started chatting about celebrity autographs and the famous people they’ve met over the years. Tim revealed a childhood cricket hero once swore at him while he was innocently collecting signatures at the SCG, which honestly still sounds traumatic. Meanwhile Ricki admitted she used to lurk outside Broncos games like a tiny celebrity stalker and even has fans with her signature tattooed on their bodies. Plus there were stories involving John Farnham signing cassettes at nightclubs, Mark Wahlberg autograph ambushes and Tim getting paid cash in yellow envelopes for fake DJing at Crown.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Could Harry Brook be England's secret bowling weapon? What is going on at Surrey? Good old Glamorgan, but have they silenced the doubters, and why? Could Zak Crawley leave Kent and where would he go? Are the non-Hundred clubs getting further and further away from top table and what can they do about it? Why has this podcast been released so late? Despite loving the game of ricket from a very young age Henry didnt think he was great at it or anything else until he realised he was good with people. He now really loves coaching with Surrey and with In Touch Cricket Academy from which he has developed his own philosophy for coaching: 1. Physical: transfer your weight as a batter staying strong and balanced 2. Meta physical: absorb every failure and decide how you will respond 3. Resilience: rid ourselves of false beliefs and re-frame! He enjoys bringing positive energy to each session + keeping things simple. Learn more about your ad choices. Can athletes really turn short sporting careers into lifelong financial security through property investment? In short, yes – here is how to do it. From cricket pitches to property portfolios, professional athletes are increasingly using real estate to secure their financial futures long after their sporting careers end. On The Pure Property Podcast, Phil Tarrant and Paul Glossop speak with former Australian cricketer Stephen O'Keefe about his transition from elite sport into building a property portfolio and investing for the future. O'Keefe shares his journey from a modest cricket contract to developing a diversified portfolio, reflecting on early missteps, the importance of due diligence, and key lessons learned along the way. The conversation also highlights the need for financial planning among athletes with short, uncertain careers, with O'Keefe sharing that by his early 30s, his passion for cricket had faded, and the game had become a job that funded his growing focus on property investment. The trio also digs into whether rising construction costs and tougher lending conditions are changing the game for investors and developers right now. Additionally, the co-hosts underscore the importance of having a trusted team and long-term planning for athletes, with O'Keefe's journey reflecting the need to learn quickly, adapt, and position himself for life beyond the game.

The Rush Hour Melbourne Catch Up - 105.1 Triple M Melbourne - James Brayshaw and Billy Brownless
JB is about to hit the skies, but Billy starts us off with the All Sports Report - as Carlos Alcaraz adds to his tattoo collection. Aussie bodybuilder Kwame Duah struts his massive frame into the studio, and Billy takes to him with a measuring tape. Then JB has his own piece of craft to share. Topics Brayshaw wants to know how men and women are different, and we speak to Greg Rust about the kerfuffle with Formula 1's new cars, plus a potential new Supercars race in Wollongong. Billy has a bit more wrappy, plus an enormous Idiot File. Then Victorian cricketers Campbell Kellaway and Ollie Peake are in studio ahead of the Sheffield Shield Final next week against SA. Finally, Billy outsources his joke one last time to Rush Hour Family member Jackson - who has a gag about a frisky military general. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

There are growing concerns that sports betting companies are targeting young adults and university students through social media ads, and video content disguised as fun and games. Auckland University students' association says students are using their rent money and their student allowance on betting, some of them saying they're enticed by content and ads from betting companies like TAB and its online platform - Betcha NZ. Betting companies are also using influencers and sporting personalities in their content - including a high-profile New Zealand cricketer. Lucy Xia reports.
