Adam Peacock is joined by former England fast bowler Steve Harmison for the second edition of English Willow Talk. Harmison discusses all things Ashes, from his first series in 2002/03 - when he toured Australia and faced some of the game's greats - to his interactions with legends such as David Boon, Rod Marsh, and Steve Waugh. He reflects on the greatest player he ever played against, Ricky Ponting, and shares some of the best sledges he received from Australian crowds. Harmison delves into the greatest Test series of all time - the 2005 Ashes - when England secured a 2-1 victory. He discusses the preparation that went into the series, his deliveries that struck Ponting and Hayden, and taking the final wicket of Michael Kasprowicz in the second Test at Edgbaston. Harmison also shares what it was like to play alongside and against legends such as Andrew Flintoff, Shane Warne, Ricky Ponting, Kevin Pietersen, and many more. Of course, we also asked him about his moment to forget in 2006, when he bowled a wide to second slip in the first Test of the Ashes. Two highly successful captains of village cricket teams, Tom Greaves of Reed, Hertfordshire, and Callum Widdows of Horningsham, Wiltshire, are the latest guests of Peter Oborne and Richard Heller in their latest cricket-themed podcast. They share the problems and triumphs of making cricket thrive in local communities – where it belongs. Both were raised in the villages they now captain, but had little exposure to cricket in primary school. At around 12 years old each was inspired by watching the thrilling Ashes series of 2005 on free-to-air television. It led Callum into long practice sessions in his garden trying to imitate Freddie Flintoff, and then into seeking out the under-13 squad in the nearby town of Warminster. After an initially unpromising reception from the coach, this would give him his first experience of captaincy.Cricket had had little appeal for Tom and his younger brother: they thought it a game for posh people. They were golfing tearaways (literally) carving divots from the lovingly tended Reed cricket pitch when practising their golf shots. One happy day the groundsman marched them into the nets and made them practise with bat and ball instead. They were converted to cricket, and the following summer alternated long net sessions with a dash home to watch the 2005 Ashes. Before long Tom was opening the batting for Reed's under-14s and he has been deeply involved with the club ever since...Read the full description here: https://chiswickcalendar.co.uk/episode-104-from-the-captains-table-cricket-in-two-village-communities/Get in contact by emailing obornehellercricket@outlook.com

TODAY'S GUEST   John-Paul Flintoff is a writer, performer, and illustrator, and the author of books like How to Change the World and A Modest Book About How to Make an Adequate Speech. He worked for 15 years as a writer and associate editor on the Financial Times, The Sunday Times, and other papers in magazines, and has been involved with The School of Life in London as a lecturer and writer.   Today, he runs a subscription service called Adequate Projects, which provides moral support and a bit of financial freedom in return for discounts and exclusive access.   EPISODE SUMMARY   In this conversation we talk about: The importance of creativity and how he learned it as a child. His attraction to poetry and why he became a journalist. His book, How to Change the World, and the burden it placed on him later in life. His involvement with The School of Life. What learning improv taught him about creativity and about life. His work on public speaking and his book on the subject. And how tragedy reshaped his life and led him on a search for more resilient happiness.   We spoke in early June 2022, and I was excited to talk to John-Paul because of his involvement with so many things I care about, from The School of Life, to mindful use of technology, to improv and creativity, to the art of writing.   I left this conversation feeling inspired by John-Paul's honesty, his never-ending search for expression, creativity, and happiness, and the wisdom with which he connects with the people around him. I think most of our listeners will feel the same.   This conversation is one of many weekly conversations we already have lined up for you with thinkers, designers, makers, authors, and entrepreneurs who are working to change our world for the better. In this episode we deep dive into the mother of all conspiracy theories, the Flat Earth where science denial alone is nowhere near enough cognitive dissidence to keep the belief alive. This is a deep state cover up that predates the very actors that are covering it up. It goes back at the very least 2500 years and has been perpetuated and hidden from the world by quite literally billions of people. It is very easy to understand how pre-seafaring civilisations believed the Earth was flat. You could be forgiven for assuming that flat earth theory is ancient and it is round earth theory that is new but you would be wrong. The flat earth movement is only a couple of hundred years old. From early antiquity onwards as sailors moved away from hugging the coastline to open sea the horrible truth of a spherical Earth became hard to deny as previously unseen land masses would begin rising out of the horizon upon approach. We will delve into the history of not only Flat Earth Theory but the great thinkers who first figured out our planet is an oblate spheroid flattened at the poles like, Pythagoras, Parmenides, Plato, Aristotle, Archimedes, Eratosthenes, Posidonius, Cicero, Pliny the Elder, Claudius Ptolemy, Strabo, Seneca, Bishop Isidore of Seville  and The Venerable Bede. We'll also look at the first written accounts of OG Flat Earthers like Lactantius and Cosmas the Monk to Illustrious modern day philosophers like former cricketer Andrew ‘Freddie' Flintoff. But of course it really becomes a movement of outright science denial with the arrival of Patent Medicine seller and self-proclaimed curer of old age, Samuel Rowbotham in the 19th century with his dubious experiments on the Bedford canal in Cambridgeshire, England.Rowbotham would light the way for followers like John Hampden, William Carpenter, David Wardlaw Scott and precursor to the modern televangelists Wilbur Voliva. Then just as the idea was dying out, Dover sign writer Samuel Shentoncreates the International Flat Earth Research Society. Taking a step away from scripture and into full blown conspiracy theory. The tinfoil hat wearing likes of Charles Johnson and Daniel Shenton will then bring this ludicrous movement into the 21st century. Primed and ready for some truly despicable swindlers to infiltrate this seemingly harmless pastime for dummies and turn this ironically circular thinking into one of the most pernicious conspiracy theories going.

What does a theater director and the coordinator of a wall-to-wall PBL program have in common? They are both experts in facilitating several projects at once. Whether that's script writing and set design in preparation for a major performance, or student-designed health apps and meal plans in response to the obesity crisis in their community. In this short interview, Kim Flintoff, coordinator of TIDES (Technology, Innovation, Design, Enterprise, Sustainability), a year 7-10 micro-PBL program, shares with us how to: Use a few simple frameworks to help generate and facilitate multiple student project ideas  Partner with and frame project-based experiences around REAL issues in the community Use a repeatable process to help students self-assess project work and become self-directed learners Build 'future ready skills' and still cover our curriculum Build momentum for learner-centered PBL across the whole school  Connect with Kim: LinkedIn (@kimflintoff), Twitter (@kimbowa), Facebook (@kimfutures)  Kim's Website: http://www.stem4innovation.org/ TIDES Program Overview Kim's Bio: Kim has traversed many roles in forty-odd years since he left school. Studying in a range of disciplines across the arts and sciences, and working in many areas including theatre, circus and media before settling into education where his combined experience seemed to find a home. How can we be more playful in our relationship with digital tools? In this episode host Menka Sanghvi explores creative practices with the prolific writer and artist John-Paul Flintoff. We all get the sense sometimes that we're working on our digital devices in unintentional ways. John-Paul describes this, for him, as a “free floating, disembodied, frenetic quality and a sense of urgency and impatience”. Listening to John-Paul reflecting on his personal journey, it is clear that he has become really self-aware about how he feels when he is using technology. And he's found a whole host of creative responses to that. John-Paul Flintoff is the author of six books that have been translated into 16 languages, including How To Change The World. He previously worked for 15 years as a writer and associate editor on the Financial Times, the Sunday Times, and other papers and magazines. He is also a speaker, performer and artist.
