The Voice Of GO(r)D podcast is very happy to bring you a lengthy and educational discussion with Mr Andy Roberts, the long time proprietor of one of Canada's oldest and best truck driving schools - The Mountain Transport Institute, who specialize in teaching you how to navigate the Rocky Mountains while pulling Super B Trains at 140,000 pounds gross weight. Located in Castlegar, BC, and in business since the 1980s, Andy's school stands out as the most effective and high value truck driving school in the industry, where he has long term affiliations with established carriers and even trains drivers from American companies who want to upgrade their skills. Andy and I wander up and down mountains of information together, and he even schools me on one of my most hated topics, automatic transmissions. From his start in trucking, to issues with the bottom feeders who comprise most of his ‘competition', Andy shares with us his professional approach, and we learn along the way why his school has been in business for as long as it has, and much else about what it takes to succeed at trucking. As mentioned on the show, I first read about the Mountain Transport Institute in an old trucking paper which has now merged with the online realm - you can check it out here - https://driverschoice.ca/Andy would be happy to hear from you, and you can send any questions his way, or sign up for a course - andy@drivemti.comI'm working on a book about the fate of the North American Trucker in 2025 - https://autonomoustruckers.substack.com/p/book-project-announcement-and-a-majorQuestions, comments, suggestions, corrections and Hate Mail are both welcomed and strongly encouraged - gordilocks@protonmail.com

Michael Hollingshead, the man who turned Timothy Leary onto LSD, managed to fundamentally influenced modern drug culture whilst remaining virtually anonymous in popular culture at large. In this episode, biographer Andy Roberts talks us through the life of a key character in psychedelic history. Of all the figures associated with the history of LSD there is none more enigmatic than Michael Hollingshead. Appearing as if from nowhere, he turned Timothy Leary on to LSD in 1962, and was influential in Leary's years at Harvard, Millbrook, and beyond. A Zelig-like character, Hollingshead was a key player in London's early LSD scene. In 1965 he went to London to establish a cultural beachhead for Leary's LSD philosophy at the World Psychedelic Centre in Chelsea. Following a spell in prison, where he dosed KGB spy George Blake, he continued to pursue adventures with the Brotherhood of Eternal Love, established a psychedelic commune, created the first electronic I Ching installation, published an underground magazine, and spent time in Nepal, before dying a mysterious death in Bolivia in the 1980s. Psychedelic trickster guru, or conman and charlatan? Exactly who Hollingshead was and what his motives were remain unclear. Some believed he was working for the secret services, others that he was just a Leary wannabe, his aspirations destroyed by his deviant personality and addiction to alcohol and opiates. Divine Rascal is the first reliable biography of one of psychedelia's key figures, without whom the trajectory of LSD in the world would have been radically different. Andy is a Data Platform and AI Architect at Microsoft, where he has worked for over 24 years. A long time ago, his father dropped two books on his desk and said: "Andy, I need you to be an SQL Expert for a meeting tomorrow. Can you handle that?" Recently out of college, he was still accustomed to cramming for an exam, so he showed up the next day, won the project, and began his new life as a “data guy.” Since then, he's “been around the (data) block.” Whether a developer, database analyst, architect, project lead, or more recently a part of a sales organization, the heart of his job has always revolved around data: acquiring it, shaping it, moving it, protecting it, using it to predict future outcomes, processing it efficiently, etc. Topics of Discussion: [4:56] Andy has always grown up with computers around and has his father to thank for a lot of it. [6:39] What is it that causes some developers to say, I want to write code, but I don't want to mess with the database? [14:29] What does Andy's job as an AI architect look like? [16:19] When you have that predictive function with something to host it, that's where AI happens and when intelligence starts happening in your application. [17:16] The importance of pre-trained models in machine learning. [20:00] What is reinforcement learning? [20:58] Why are we calling some things artificial intelligence and other things, not AI? [24:44] Andy gives his advice for those new to writing software and in developing. [29:08] What is a data lake? [31:48] The importance of thinking about the database as part of the application, not a separate thing. In the latest episode of the podcast, we discuss the idea of greatness in cricket. What do we mean when we say a player is 'great', how does one compare across eras, and what are the pitfalls we fall into when discussing greatness. Talking Points: Greatness as a measurement of a player's performance against their peers The habit of putting down one player as one elevates another The need for a transcendent moment for a player to be anointed 'great' The fallacy of the match-winning innings Lillee v Cummins: the complexity of comparing two great bowlers The power of nostalgia in talking about greatness - the Andy Roberts problem Great batsmen in weak teams and great bowlers in strong teams The problem with recency bias when judging greatness Is this South African team better than the teams from the 1990s and 2000s? The high benchmark for subcontinental players in foreign conditions Support 81allout on Ko-fi Participants: Siddhartha Vaidyanathan (@sidvee) Mahesh Sethuraman (@cornerd) Kartikeya Date (@cricketingview) * Buy Cricket Beyond the Bazaar (recently republished by 81allout) India (hardback) | India (paperback, e-copy); Australia (hardback, paperback, e-copy); USA (hardback, paperback, e-copy); UK (hardback, paperback, e-copy); Canada (hardback, paperback, e-copy) Related: The line of greatness - Siddhartha Vaidyanathan - The Cricket Monthly Wisden 100 - Wikipedia Who are the greatest T20 players of all - Kartikeya Date - ESPNcricinfo Who are the best batsmen of each decade - Anantha Narayanan - ESPNcricinfo The Richards standard for ODI batsmen - Kartikeya Date - ESPNcricinfo A new measure for cricketing greatness - Andy Bull - Guardian An all-time world Test XI, according to ICC rankings - Rupin Kale - Wisden

You know how we put so much thought and effort into what we wear for our big races. We make sure we have clothes that will not chafe, that we have our fastest shoes, that we are going to be comfortable in what we are wearing. OK, now imagine scrapping all of that and deciding to go run a marathon with face paint and wrapped head to toe in bandages. And having so much fun, that you go back and do it again, but this time with badminton shoes and rackets. That's what my guest Andy Roberts did. Andy is a runner from England. Last year, he snagged a Guinness World Record by becoming the fastest person to run a marathon dressed as a mummy. That was at the London Marathon. When he got into London again this year, he went for another Guinness World Record and became the fastest person to run a marathon as a badminton player. So Andy is now a two-time Guinness World Record holder and in this episode, the two of us wonder if he can get a Guinness World Record for holding the most Guinness World Records. Andy started running about six years ago and has fallen in love with the sport. Marathons, ultras, he's done it all. He was so much fun to talk to and his world record attempt stories are hilarious. “NASTY GNOMES, EVIL IMPS, AND TERRIFYING TOMMYKNOCKERS” and More True Terrors! #WeirdDarknessIN THIS EPISODE: Did she drown? Did she commit suicide? Despite her death in 1889, we still don't know how Maggie Hourigan died. (The Mystery of Maggie Hourigan) *** In 1958 Gavin Gibbons wrote a children's science-fiction novel By Space Ship to the Moon, which featured a UFO landing on Moel Sych in the Berwyn Mountains of North Wales. Sixteen years later, in a surreal case of life imitating art, those very same mountains would again be the focus for a story involving a downed UFO. But this time, some said, the story was for real. (The UFO Case That Refuses to Die) *** Greer Island, a small patch of land close to where the West Fork of the Trinity River flows into Lake Worth, is heavily shaded by tall oaks, cedar elms and cottonwoods. One of the quietest spots in Fort Worth, the island is home to egrets and owls, perhaps an alligator or two. And maybe, just maybe, the Lake Worth Monster. (The Lake Worth Monster) *** In 2017, Washington State Senator Karen Keiser was quoted as saying, “The incidents continue, they continue, and we have to consider that there is potential cosmic life over the island… it's a very special place, with a cosmic presence.” What exactly happened on Maurey Island in 1947? (The Maurey Island Incident) *** Whether you're a true believer or one of those skeptics, stories of spirits haunting the living from the confines of a Ouija board can chill you to the bone, and make you think twice before communicating with entities from another dimension. (True And Disturbing Ouija Board Stories) *** What if creatures like gnomes and imps aren't just real – but also evil?
