Reduced plant functioning caused by dehydration

It's sitting in your home right now, humming away. If prompted, you might say it's one of the most important appliances you own. But you probably don't give your refrigerator too much thought. The humble fridge has been a staple in American households since it became popular in the 1940s and '50s. Fridges today have more space than ever, and more gadgets to make them "smart." But sometimes, problems arise. Wilting lettuce, a container of strawberries going bad days before you expected. An icemaker on the fritz. And a tub of yogurt hiding behind the condiments that you know you bought... sometime in the past few weeks. We discuss how our refrigerated food system developed, how it affects the food we eat, and how we can use our fridges more effectively.Want to support 1A? On the twentieth episode of ATFT, I talk with director Craig Ienne Pedroza! Craig is a Jacksonville filmmaker who fell in love with cinema at a young age and his passion for film has only grown through the years. Musicals like The Court Jester, Singin' in the Rain, and The Sound of Music were some of the first musicals that have impacted him to this day. His favorite film is Damian Chazelle's La La Land. He earned a Bachelor's degree in Film & Production last year and has won both the Best Micro Short at Infinity Fest and Best Jax 180 at the Apologia Film Festival for his short film "The Candles are Wilting", which you can watch on YouTube by clicking here!: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MXecwF6x0xU. This is Craig's third guest appearance on the wide release of ATFT! He was previously a guest on the episodes #FilmTwitter Trends: Directors edition and the 2024 Oscars Special. Overall, this is his fifth guest appearance on the show. This episode marks the first time I have interviewed a friend on ATFT! Craig and I became friends through our mutual friend, Taylor, who helped recruit him to join our team of making a short film. Craig was incredibly helpful and gave me advice I really needed at the time amidst the stressful environment. We share similar interests in film, especially in regards to Wong Kar- Wai. Two years later, we often talk or text about film and I love learning of his often fascinating, unique takes. When I started this podcast two years ago, it was always my intention to interview my friends but I grew somewhat hesitant since I expected I would know many of the answers to the questions asked. I ended up learning so much about Craig and I couldn't be happier with what became of this episode. This episode was recorded on May 10, 2024. Craig's musical drama short, "We Dream of Eden", has been long anticipated. The film is about dreams and how a stranger can have a strong impact on another. The story is told through a young boy, Noah's (Aisha Christopher Williams jr), eyes and his fractured memories of the turbulent relationship between up- and- coming star July (Lina Smith) and her boyfriend Rowan (Jadon Le). Lina Smith has been a guest on two previously released episodes: Horror films and the 2024 Oscars Special! I was very fortunate to work on this film as a script supervisor but more so capturing behind the scenes footage. Craig's goal for the film is for the audience to leave the theater with a certain, individualized and impactful feeling. Craig led a positive and collaborative set filled with people who share a deep passion for film. "We Dream of Eden" will be submitted to a few film festivals so stay updated on when and where you can watch the short film by following @iennefilm on both Instagram and YouTube as well as his production company KAIBIGANfilm on Instagram. Craig gives a very real, honest interview that spans from his early interest in film thanks to his grandparents and mother to reflecting on his previous work to his boldest project yet, "We Dream of Eden". His story and work ethic is sure to inspire aspiring filmmakers. In this episode, Craig and I also talk about the brilliance of 12 Angry Men, the challenges of filmmaking, and how he opened up and became more social thanks to three factors including film and his girlfriend Lina. All this and more on the latest episode of All the Film Things! Background music created and used with permission by the Copyright Free Music - Background Music for Videos channel on YouTube.
Send us a Text Message. This week we're talking about making use of every bit of produce, from potato peels and mushy bananas, to wilted herbs and dairy on the verge of its best-before date. This episode of Three Kitchens Podcast will help you stretch your dollar by suggesting ways of tossing less out into the compost or trash bin and getting more from the groceries you buy.1. Obviously, composting is a better option than sending things to the landfill. If you don't have time or energy to do anything else with those odds, ends, peels, etc, toss them in a compost bin.2. The easiest way to use up bits and pieces of produce is to make broth. We like to keep a container specifically for this purpose in the freezer.3. We have awesome ideas for using up peels from carrots, potatoes, citrus fruit and garlic. 4. We even have suggestions for using up that milk that is on the verge of going bad, or those sad wilted herbs. Enjoy these ideas for making the most of your groceries! After a great summer with scorching temps on the Port Hills, the plants started to suffer a wee bit – away from home for a week or more makes most gardeners a bit anxious. Plants dried out very quickly. How to Water? Never been a fan of sprinklers. I try to keep my leaves dry as much as possible; wet leaves often give fungal spores the opportunity to settle on the plant, causing leaf-spots, rots, downy mildew, and powdery mildew. Try to water the root zone of a plant, by depositing the water —gently— on the soil. A fierce jet of water can clog the porosity of the soil (not so good either!), so a nice shower-setting of your hose handpiece is perfect. Evening or Morning? It doesn't really matter a lot, I think. The water cools the soil remarkably and, in the morning, (when it's cooler) most of the water will actually penetrate the soil. In the evening (with warmer temperatures) a proportion of the water will evaporate, become a “cloud” of H2O gas and meet its mates, somewhere high up in the sky. In other words, it doesn't do the plants much good. But watering in the middle of the day makes a huge percentage of the water disappear into the stratosphere. In my tunnel house (Tomatoes, Cucumbers, Capsicums) I prefer an evening watering to moisten the soil…. Followed by a liquid fertiliser (seafood Soup / Seaweed Tea) a few hours later when the soil is cooler, and the plants are in the mood for a liquid “meal” Established shrubs and trees? Most Nature Nerds that go walking will see in dry summers how established trees show severe signs of dehydration or wilting. Even without any rain those leaves will often look a lot better in the evening. Wilting is simply a strategy to shut off the leaves' stomata to save the moisture escaping from these openings in the heat of the day. This wilting can go on for weeks, sometimes. A thoroughly good soak (hours and hours of watering) can re-set the water deficit in the soil. This deep watering is far more beneficial to soil and shrubs/trees than daily “piddle-waterings” Over-watering? As mentioned, a few months ago: to get trees and shrubs acclimatised to the drought, don't “Over-Water” them. Let the search for water by getting the roots to grow deeper and further away from the main trunk/stem. Build Resilience!! I reckon that UNDER-WATERING is a great way to train your perennials. Regular droughts? Which plants are suited for water-stressed areas? Think Mediterranean species that often don't get much during the 5 months of summer in Spain and Morocco and Italia. Often plants with blue-ish or white-ish colours or with thick hairs on the leaves (that stop water loss). Euphorbias, Echiums, Watsonias, cacti, succulents, phlomis, Jerusalem sage, rosemary, lambs ear, etc etc. Plants that can NEVER dry out. Ferns have got a different vascular system in their stems and fronds; these bundles are not as strong and lignine-supported as other “Vascular plants”; So when a fern gets too dry, its bundles simply shrivel up and irreversibly collapse. I warned you!! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Tune in to hear the two options, then explore suggestions of how you can make the choice you feel is wisest and most helpful. You'll then hear why I think it's crucial right now to distinguish between 20th c. sustainability viewpoints that are now outmoded and 21st. c. regenerative viewpoints that are deeper, more inclusive, and have the potential to transform life on this planet into tremendous flourishing. Thanks for listening! Hello to you listening in Los Lunas, New Mexico!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Story Prompt Friday and your host, Diane Wyzga. The other day my friend and colleague Dr. Hoda Kilani of Right Career Fit posed this question: “Are you moving forward in a way that motivates you to wake up and run to work?”Her question carried me back decades to one Easter Sunday. My baby brother, Paul, and I were standing in the kitchen of the family home. Maybe preparing a meal. Maybe washing up from a meal. I was yammering on about this or that activity, achievement, project in my professional life. Why? In part because my personal life had wilted. He turned and asked me: So, are you flourishing out there? What stays with me is the word "flourishing." A deliberate choice. One interpretation is "to grow luxuriantly." How often do we use that word? Not surprisingly flourish comes from the Old French meaning “flower.”Story Prompt: How are you waking up each day? Ready to move forward with anticipation? Or something else? What could use some attention so you flourish and bloom like the flower you are? Write that story! Practical Tip: The magic of stories is also in the sharing. If you wish share your story with someone or something. All that matters is you have a story. You're always invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic....., would you subscribe, share a 5-star rating + nice review on your social media or podcast channel of choice, and join us next time!Meanwhile, stop by my Quarter Moon Story Arts website to:✓ Check out Services I offer,✓ Arrange your free Story Start-up Session,✓ Opt In to my monthly NewsAudioLetter for bonus gift, valuable tips & techniques to enhance your story work, and✓ Stay current with Diane and on LinkedIn.Stories From Women Who Walk Production TeamPodcaster: Diane F Wyzga & Quarter Moon Story ArtsMusic: Mer's Waltz from Crossing the Waters by Steve Schuch & Night Heron MusicAll content and image © 2019 to Present Quarter Moon Story Arts. In Turkish society today, women have become more and more invisible under the rule of President Erdoğan's Justice and Development Party, illustrated by the absence of female supporters in Turkish football stadiums. This has not always been the case, however, as a recent article in the Soccer and Society journal highlighted. Sezen Kayhan's study focuses on a group of female supporters, the Purple Violets, who follow Orduspor, a team based in the city of Ordu on the Black Sea. In the 1970s, the Purple Violets grew in numbers to such an extent that the club decided to reserve a special place in the stadium just for them, known as the ‘women's bleacher'. Sezen notes that football was not only very popular but was the ‘pioneer social activity' for women in the city of Ordu in the 1970s and 1980s. Since then, however, the group has lost its enthusiasm and stopped going to games, due chiefly to the commercialization of football, the impact of political polarisation in Turkey on football fandom, and government policies strongly discouraging women's presence in public spaces; the latter has manifested itself in sexist chants and attacks on female supporters. Furthermore, the existence of Orduspor is itself under threat, after the local pro-government municipality formed a new team and forced Orduspor out of its stadium, which has now been demolished. *** If you enjoy the podcast, please follow us on social media at twitter.com/footballsocpod and leave us a five star review - it helps others discover the show!
